Problems with 2010 Chevrolet Malibu SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 77 742 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

I currently have 2 open recalls and was never sent out notices for either, i am currently 15 weeks pregnant so that's a safety concern with me because they can both result in a crash.

The brake lights come on at any given time even when you aren't pressing on the brake pedal. when you press on the brake pedal sometimes the brake lights do not come on at all. i have replaced wheel hub/bearing combos, along with adding electrical grease to the connector for the light controls, nothing fixes this issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated while his son was driving at approximately 35 mph when his brakes light were illuminated with the stability light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer (ron norris buick gmc1350 s washington ave, titusville, fl 32780) for a diagnosis and repairs. the diagnosis was a replacement stability control module. however the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of this failure. the contact's dad was referencing this failure to nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electrical system, exterior lighting, vehicle speed control, and electronic stability control). the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Brake lights flicker while driving when not pressing on the brakes. ecs and check engine lights keep coming on and the car is jerking while driving.

Esc , traction control lights come on. then rear brake lights work opposite of standard brake light design. the rear brake lights come on while driving. when brake pedal is depressed, the brake lights turn off. this has been going on for two years now. the dealership just patches the repair. the repair only lasts a few weeks.

Even after brake light recall from 2014, i continue to have problems with the brake lights illuminating when i'm not pressing the brake pedal, and turning off when i press the brake pedal. i've had this problem 'fixed' several times now, and it keeps happening. most recently, in january 2019, and now 6 months later, it is happening again. while i'm driving (and not always while i'm braking), the service traction, service esc, esc off warnings come on my info display, as well as the traction control image. from that moment on, while i'm driving and not pressing the brake pedal, my brake lights are all illuminated. when i lightly press on the brake, the lights go off, unless i continue to press harder on the pedal, and then they'll come on again. this is such a hazard while i'm driving that i don't even want to go anywhere. why does this keep happening? if this was supposedly fixed with the recall, it absolutely wasn't. i've seen other people report the same issue on the online forums, so i know i'm not alone with this problem. it is a major safety issue and needs to be fixed now! i will be going back to the dealer who did the repair in january to get this fixed again, but i don't understand why i should need to. it shouldn't continue to happen if it is really being fixed. something else is wrong with this vehicle.

I purchased my malibu from a friend who bought the car brand new. he told me they had the recall fixed. the problem came back last year, march of 2018, i called gm they said there wasn't a recall and that the recall had been fixed. i said maybe so but the problem is back. i was told the only thing i could do was to take it to a chevy dealer and have them run diagnostics on it, which costs about $150 that i had to pay for. why when we know what the problem is?! i took it to a shop, june 2018, where they changed the brake pedal switch, i still had the problem. i took it back to the shop where the poor guy worked on it for 3 hours, trying to figure it out. he finally just cleaned and re-greased the plug and it has been fine up until yesterday, may 10,2019, and my problem is back. also, my third brake light works whenever it feels like it.

The esc light comes on and tells me it needs serviced. when this happens the brake lights stay on even if my foot is not on the brake. it also has a problem with the gear shift when trying to pull it out of park. this also disables my cruise control. this issue happens sometimes as soon as i start the car or after driving for a bit. i've taken the car in to get the problem fixed. they replaced the brake sensor and that worked for a week then the esc light came back on and the brake lights stayed on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle unintentionally accelerated and then slowed down. the esc and traction control warning indicators were illuminated. the vehicle was taken to kramer tire (6628 providence rd, virginia beach, va 23464, (757) 346-5739) where the front brakes and rotors were replaced, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic where the passenger side cv joint was replaced, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 108,000.

On the highway going 65 mph, the engine shut off without warning but the battery/electronics were still on. i safely stopped the car on the side of the road. the check engine + abs + traction control lights came on simultaneously. the car would not start. i finally had to call a tow company. no mechanic knows how to fix it. upon further research, many owners of the same make model and model year range suffered similar situations. the car still won't start till now.

Brake lamp recall for these models do not work. i noticed the issue recently while driving home from work at around 55 mph at night. my brake lights are on, while my foot is off of the brake pedal. when i place my foot on the brakes, the brake lights go off. this is a serious driving hazard. i've taken the car to get the recall handled, but noticed this morning, that my brake lights are still illuminating when my foot is off the brake pedal.

Traction control light continues to come on. when this happens the brakes malfunction illuminates when i'm not pressing the brakes and goes out when i do. disables cruise control. replaced body control module 6 months ago to correct these issues still having the same problem very unsafe.

While driving down the road, the cluster panel starts showing warning lights for the steering, service esc, and the mil light was on, the car lost power, lost power steering and had no power, no matter what i did, the car would not respond. this putting my family and me in danger, we were driving on the idl in tulsa oklahoma at rush hour, very, very busy road at that time of day. i have researched the problem, this is a very serious issue that will end up getting someone killed. the car is completely unstable, erratic and very hard to drive, you lose power (no acceleration) and power steering. the car has 142,000 miles on it, that seems to be when it happening to other vehicles also.

I bought my malibu in 2014. from ron marhofer chevrolet. not knowing there were recalls on my car when i bought it. in 2016, with 75k miles i was having troubles, brake lights were coming on when i accelerated the gas. got the recall fixed. now, at 102k miles and 2 years later, the brake lights are coming back on. my dealership told me since my warranty was up, i would have to pay a $99 diagnostic on top of labor. i wrote chevrolet last week and they denied this has anything to do with the recall because no one else has been complaining.. it's frustrating and such a scandal. i have an appt with my dealership next week to take a look. i feel this is going to be a costly matter, for something gm is trying go cover up. shame on you gm!

Headlight connection overheats making headlight go out. abs control locks brakes durring normal driving. rear brake lights engage while driving without pressing on brake.

On 12. 06. 2018 the power steering code c0454. last year nov. 2018, it was the timing chain, then the esc, which is still unresolved , then i had to put in a new transmission.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving 50 mph, the brake indicator illuminated independently. in addition, the service traction control warning indicator illuminated and the cruise control became inoperable. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired on february 19, 2015 per nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electrical system, exterior lighting, vehicle speed control, electronic stability control); however, the failure recurred twice. jeff wyler springfield chevrolet (located at 2237 w 1st st, springfield, oh 45504, (937) 525-4646) was notified. the manufacturer was also notified of the failure and provided case number: [xxx]. the approximate failure mileage was 163,000. *parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *an

Vehicle can shift from park to drive without brake being applied

The brakes lights stay on while driving and go off when the brake pedal is depressed. the traction control service alert comes on the dash also. concerned that numerous identical complaints found on the car complaints web site noting the dealers have no clue how to fix the issue. meanwhile, occupants are at risk of rear collision due to brake lights not coming on during braking.

The brake light comes on when the brakes are not being depressed and goes off when it is being depressed. this disengages the cruise control and also the service esc light comes on when it happens. the 2014 recall was done by the dealer and yet the problem keeps occurring. there was an update to the recall and this was also done but has not fixed the problem. this issue seems to happen intermittently and randomly.

The stop lamps come on all by themself, if the lamps are illuminated they will turn off when the brake pedal is pressed. this also affects the traction controls and stability control, the warning light illuminates on the instrument panel. also cruise control becomes inoperative. gm has acknowledged this and has an extended warranty for this problem. however they've capped it at 150,000 miles which puts me out of warranty. when i spoke to gm they admitted this and said because i wasn't the original owner i wouldn't be notified. they don't want to help!

High mounted brake light failure (3rd brake light) - i found that there is a recall on this vehicle. i took the car in for recall repair this authorized chevy dealer: haley chevrolet located in: haley automotive group address: 12400 tennessee plaza, midlothian, va 23112 hours: open ⋅ closes 8pm phone: (804) 818-7660 ** when i picked up the vehicle i was not told that whatever work they did did not work. in fact, they pulled the car up to the pickup area, said nothing about their failure to repair the vehicle, did not tell me that the brale light was stillm not working, thereby leaving me with a car still broken and me at safety risk to drive a car with brake light not working, and in fact i got a warning ticket by the police for the 3rd brake light still beung out

My brake lights are illuminated when i do not push on the brake when i do push on the brake they disappear i can't put my cruise control on when this happens this happens while i'm driving it started happening about a month ago at a hundred and ninety-eight thousand miles but it would go away i was able to turn the car off and back on and it would be fine now it is like that at all times

My tail lights come on without pressing the pedal and they do not come on, when the pedal is pressed. very, very close to being rear ended. all roads and at all speeds. cruise control is also affected. esc light has come on. very dangerous situation. nhtsa says there is a recall, chevrolet says there is not.

Takata recall my seat-belt light stays on when i have my seat-belt on, my esc light keeps blinking as well as my traction control light. my brake lights stay on while i am driving and go off when i brake.

The brake lights illuminate without pressing on the brakes. i remember there being a recall before and i took my car in and it got fixed however it is doing it again. and my air bag light goes on and off all the time.

I have been noticing and been told my brake lights were on while driving down road and at times my cruise control would not function and it happens during day when i can't tell and at night which obviously is more apparent but not any less dangerous ...putting two together my brake lights would be coming on and when i press the pedal to slow down they go off...i bought this car used and after googling to find a fix i see there are many recalls and complaints regarding this issue with this year make and model...as it does not list my vin to be involved with any recalls it's concerning that the safety of my kids and i could be at risk. i cannot find any positive fix to the problem yet and see many people spent hundreds to thousands at dealerships only to find the problem not fixed...if there's any assistance information or go to's you can provide i would be greatly appreciated

I've had electrical problems with my car since i bought it. the dealer has never been able to fix it because my car never showed any "codes". my car has acceleration problems, the right head light socket harness keeps burning out and i'm also starting to have problems with my brake lights. my brake lights don't go on when i press on my brake and when i do they sometimes stay on after i take my foot off the brake. the acceleration problem happens on a full stop and on the highway. i usually give my self extra space to accelerate because my car fails at times. in the highway my car sometimes struggles to catch up to speed with the other cars. this problem has almost cause and accident several times.

Service esc, service traction, picture of car skidding, tires need air and picture of tire that looks flat keeps coming up on my panel. this never happened prior to having new tires and brakes put on my car at hendrix chevrolet in durham, nc. i only have 40+ thousand miles on my car. at 20,000 my right front rotar and brakes had to be replace because it was roaring and i literally had to have it towed to my home. i bought the car new when my son worked at hendrix (thought it was a good idea). he wasn't working there when this happened but he fixed it and then hendrix said they could not reimburse me because he wasn't a current employee. i love my car but have had nothing but problems with it! please let me know what to do to get the first issues i mentioned corrected! i'm getting different answers from everyone i talk too. i see many people on the internet are complaining of the same problem with their malibu as well!

The brake lights are on all the time while driving. when the brakes are applied the brake lights go off.

Brake lights stay all the time. service traction light on. service cvs light on.

The brake lights come on while driving with out pressing the break pedal. when the brake pedal it pressed the lights go off. the cruise control is not fuctioning and the esc indicator light comes on.

Brake lights come on while driving and go off when the brake pedal is depressed. service esc light and traction control light on as well. unsure if related.

In 2014 there was a recall involving the esc system. my vehicle would have issues shifting from park to drive, brake lights would not work when the peddle was pushed and the brake lights would be on when you would take your foot off the brake. my vehicle was "fixed" and was working properly for a period of time. my car now, once again, has the service esc and traction control off warnings coming on in my vehicle and the brake lights are not working properly. when the brake pedal is pushed down the brake lights do not work. when the pedal is released my brake lights come on. currently there is no recall for this. this would happen when i was simply braking for a light. my brakes work just not the lights to warn other drivers that i am applying my brakes.

Im having electric problems with car. the brake light come on when driving and not using the brakes. it will go off and on. the dash lights would come on and off . there is some kind of electric problem going on. i had people and police following me let me know about the braking light comming on going down the road

While in motion, my 2010 chevy malibu ltz has been intermittently giving me a "service traction" "esc off" notice and the cruise control is also working intermittently.

The brake lights illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty engaging and disengaging the cruise control; disablement of crash the traction control, electronic stability control.

Esc,traction, abs lights come on while car is moving, and when first starting, a trouble code c0131 has been recorded. the problem started in june of 2010. a week after we got the car, the dealer changed brake lite switch, the car has been back to shop 15-20 times it is now 8-9-2017 no one can fix problem, made calls to gm costomer service many times over the 7 years, still no fix, gm wants us to pay for repair and diagnostic as too the car is out of warranty ,we feel gm should repair the car free of charge as to this is dangerous and has never been fixed ,

Was recently made aware (numerous times in the last few weeks) that when driving down the road my brake lights are not working properly. at times when not applying the brakes the brake lights are on acting as if i was breaking and when i brake the brake lights turn off (so in other words it is reversed). around the same time that this began to have likely started occurring the following warning lights began to appear; "esc" and service traction" (i do not know if there is any relation between the brake lights and noted warning lights). i do not feel safe driving the vehicle especially with my family in it as the brake lights are not giving other drivers around me the appropriate indication of what my vehicles intentions are. the brake light problem has been occurring, when in motion, stationary, highway and city street. potentially parts that may require replacement or repair; body control module (bcm), bas, and harness connector.

The esc and traction warning lights came on. esc not working so i was very very cautious driving. i took to dealer. $1200 + to replace 2 computer modules for brakes, steering, traction. this brings number of modules needing replacement to 4 on this vehicle. eight days later, all the same lights came on again plus brake fluid light. called dealer and told to bring car in for diagnostic. i asked about safety and was told to check brake fluid. i said i don't know how. so, i went to car and brake was harder but working. drove to dealer. when i arrived, there is no brake fluid left. lucky i made it to the dealer. was told either part not installed properly or defective part. this was a very dangerous situation that could have cost my life or someone else's life. in researching later, i see a number of complaints about these warning lights and modules. i am lucky there was no incident.

Takata recall the traction service light keeps coming on and says service esc , then brake lights come on and stay on while driving. when i press on the brake pedal the light so off.

Brake lights on when brake not applied. brake lights are off when brakes are applied. ref. recall 14v252000. to date 4 returns to dealer to fix but issue still present. problem is intermittent and last occurrence resulted in near end collision from vehicle behind.

Takata recall the breaks are coming on when the break is not engaged and when the break light is engaged it doesn't come on. i have been to get a break light switched out twice and still having the same problem. over and over and the service traction light also seems to keep coming on and they cannot figure out why. i am wasting money because no one can seem to figure i they problem. this is a very serious dangerous problem and needs to be under recall.

Brake lights illuminating while driving without touching the brakes. when touching the brakes the lights go off and have zero brake lights. the traction control and brake lights on dash will pop up on and off.

Had camshaft sensor installed less than a year ago and engine came on with same sensor code. the electrical system is going out constantly and headlight bulb was repaired 4 times less than a year. cost me over 600 total one service was done for free because it was repaired and blew the next day. so much work and barely drive to car to and from work only 2 miles. i plan to make a complaint to the attorney general for explanations if not solved or reimbursed. the vehicle stays in the shop more than use. traction control sensor replaces and came back 2 weeks later. the vehicle also stalled with my children on a busy street where a vehicle almost struck the back side missing my daughter by inches. unsafe vehicle and too many malfuctions.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while operating the vehicle, the esc and traction control sensors illuminated and the cruise control failed to operate. in addition, the rear brake lights illuminated while driving and turned off when depressing the brake pedal. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that an electrical connector was faulty. the connector was replaced and the failure was remedied. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was informed that the faulty connector was a different connector associated with nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (service brakes, electrical system, exterior lighting). the failure mileage was 84,325.

On march 1, 2017 at 28981 miles, the airbag light came on, (not the first time). the next day, the stability control and the abs lights both also came on. in both occasions the car was moving at about 40 mph on a city street. i took it to the dealer, they charged me $153 to get a diagnosis.they wanted another $850 to have it fixed. i took it to another shop that did it for $190. these were 2 separate problems, one was the airbag light (a connection under the front passenger seat), and the other was a sensor in the left front wheel (the stability/abs light).

The electronic stability control and traction control feature malfunctions and shuts off every time i drive the car. also, the brake lights do not turn on when i apply the brakes with normal pressure. the brake lights do turn on only if a very great abnormal amount of pressure is applied to the brake pedal. also, occasionally the brake lights turn on when i do not push the brake pedal at all.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the traction control and brake light indicators illuminated. when the brake pedal was depressed, the brake light would not illuminate. however, when the brake pedal was not depressed, the brake light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the pedal sensor assembly was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 52,000. ...updated 05/22/17 *bf *cn

Car was serviced for a 2014 recall because of the brake lights operating in reverse (on when foot is off the brake and off when brake is pressed), problem has returned and i was told that the "fix" that was applied during the recall was just a "band-aid" and that the bcm would have to be replaced. very unsafe car to drive since the brake lights are telling the drivers behind you that you are not stopping when, in fact, you are stopping. with more and more distracted drivers on the road, who rely on seeing brake lights in their peripheral vision in order to avoid a collision, the danger is increased exponentially. i have contacted gm and was asked "what do you want us to do?", which basically told me that they were unwilling to help me. this needs to fixed before someone is killed or gravely injured.
