At first, when starting vehicle, dic would display service esc and power steering. turning vehicle off and back on would usually clear the problem, however, while driving in a straight line, the steering wheel would randomly start moving an inch or so to the left and right. after a couple of days, while traveling at highway speeds, the service esc and power steering messages would display again, and power steering was lost. this started happening more frequently to the point where i can't complete a trip without the power steering dropping out. research shows gm is aware of the problem, and my vehicle will be fixed under gm special coverage 15356, since i am under 150,000 miles. however, i feel this is happening to enough to warrant a general recall.

Hello i have a big problem with my steering wheel today when i drive my car the steering stopped and i lost the control and the car written (power steering /esc off) it was very hard now my steering doesn't move and i still have the problem. that happened on (westbrook st , south portland, me) how can i fix it? chevrolet malibu 2010 thanks

Hello i have a big problem in my car today when im drive my car i lost the control on my steering and the car written (power steering /esc off) and the steering didn't move left or right and still like that that's on westbrook st south portland me i don't know what i should do it was hard.. thanks.

I was driving on the freeway and all of a sudden i lose power of steering. the power steering light came on and the esc light. totally freaked me out. i pulled over to the side of the freeway and turn the car off. when i restarted the car everything went back to normal until later that day. this has been happen for the last three day. soon as i start the car up and drive for a 3 miles then the power steering goes and if i stop and turn the car off and restart, it goes away for a moment and then comes bac. i don't think this is normal. this is happening at all different rate of speed.

I started the car then began to pull away from park. the driver's info display had a message pop up - something about steering, or esc, or something like that. i think it went off or maybe it went off when i stopped the car and shut the engine off to try and reset the system. while the engine was still running when i was starting to pull away from park, the steering wheel was extremely hard to turn. i shut the car off and restarted it and it seemed fine. now, there is a grumbling sound coming from the steering column and wheel shakes a little. the service engine light is on but i have not had it read yet to see what codes come up.

When i come to a complete stop while driving in the city, i felt a small jerking to the left in the steering wheel. this started on friday february 3, 2017 between driving from one work place to the other. there were no issues when driving it home. no issues noticed on saturday february 4th while running errands in the am hours. i did not notice any jerking in the steering wheel at all. later on that saturday night the power steering went out while backing out of a parking space at a restaurant. we traveled on the city streets home because it was almost a straight drive home from the restaurant. it was very hard for my husband to steer the car on the way home. there was no power assist at all. there has been several complaints on other malibu's with the same issue. not sure if i really want to drive my vehicle tomorrow for work with this issue. i do travel on the freeway in the mornings.

I went out to my car to go somewhere and the esc is the power steering the steering wheel will not move was in the back of my house

Service esc and power steering. cars power steering will turn off and display service esc. power steering will turn off automatically while car is being driven. car then needs to be turned off then on again in order to get the power steering back.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving 65 mph approaching an exit ramp, a chime rang and a power steering indicator illuminated. in addition, the power steering assist failed and almost causing a crash. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering motor circuit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering) and was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 152,068.

I was travelling about 25-30mph started to skid (yes it was icy) lightly tapped the brakes then all of a sudden the steering locked up and the brakes also. all i could do was let go and hope for the best. ending up hitting a fed ex van and pge truck with a snow plow. there is a police report and the car ended up getting totalled. i had only made one payment on it. insurance claim# 003379048000000016001 usaa , airbag did not deploy.

After i start the car, the vehicle will chime as the dic displays "power steering" (usually accompanied by "service esc" and "svc tire monitor"). the electronic power steering will then completely give out making it very strenuous to use steering wheel to turn both in motion and stationary. this problem requires the car to be restarted multiple times in order for power steering to run and work smoothly again. power steering occasionally gives out during many trips (regardless of speed and distance), while successfully completing very few trips uninterrupted. i drive a 2010 chevy malibu with 140k miles on it - this has been pretty much my only problem thus far, but has now occurred everyday for about 4-5 days in a row.

Ecslight come on and then you lose power steering and get a error saying power steering if you turn car off and make on it again light goes off and the power steering comes back car was on highway this as happened multiple time in the last two sats

Esc light is coming on and the steering wheel locks up and won't turn while driving and also while parked. shutting off car then turning back on sometimes resets it but the steering column is also vibrating and almost feels as the steering wheel is going to fall off. steering wheel is also twitching even while at a stop. my vehicle has been very well taken care of, all oil changes done on time snd regular maintaince.

Symptoms started occasionally mainly while going straight, at any speed, would stay off until i restarted the car, now it increased to all the timen within a few months. when electric power steering is on the steering wheel will shake in park...and would jerk the steering wheel while driving. power steering goes out.. says to service power steering and service esc. makes it very difficult to steer especially and the lower speeds, i feel like i am driving as if i am drivint a semi, forces me to take wider turns. did contact gm, they didn't seem to care that my car has same symptoms as other previously recalled vehicles. the car was out of the special warranty gm issued due to mileage, i however bought the car used with 170,000 it had already surpassed the warranty.

While driving the vehicle my power steering stopped working at low speeds. this was as i was turning, so it caused quite a bit of panic. i thought this was a one-time issue, however 2 months later, i am driving to school and taking a turn when it happens again, once again this issue caused me to be in a unsafe situation, loss of power steering at low speeds. i am a female therefore cannot generate the effort needed to turn the wheel when the power steering goes out. i researched and found that the 2009 model year has a tsb on it, however my vehicle which has exactly the same symptoms does not. *tr

On dec 9 2016 i was driving on hwy 169 in mn and my 2010 malibu displayed service esc than flashed power steering then esc off then i lost power steering and it has not regained even after all the restarts been couple weeks now still there searched the internet seems i am not the only one car has 180,000 miles but serviced regularly so yes i think this should be a recall. steering is pretty important when driving . any info pertaining to the malibu steering. *tr

The vehicle's electric power steer failed with no warning while my daughter was driving along a normal suburban road. this created a dangerously unsafe driving condition as she could barely turn the steering wheel. fortunately there was no tragedy that resulted, but the car is not safe to drive and we towed it to our home then to a gm store. this is a safety issue that should be recalled as it is well known problem within gm and public forums across. i was informed that gm has created a special policy #15356 to address this issue when i was at the gm store, extending the warranty, they said it was only to 150k miles & our vehicle has 159k miles so we weren't covered. i asked if there was any maintenance that we could have done to prevent this, there wasn't any procedure. further research has shown that there is no set mileage that this can occur due to the fact that is a faulty design & not normal wear and tear ! this really needs to be a recall due to the safety ramifications when the failure occurs and the steering becomes very difficult to operate creating a dangerous situation and is sure to the cause of accidents/ injury/etc. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering malfunctioned on the highway. the check power steering warning indicator illuminated when the failure occurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000.

While driving approx 35 mph, lost power steering. power steering warning message appeared, car very hard to maneuver. turned engine off and back on, power steering returned. power steering continues to shut off randomly at various speeds without warning. approx 98,800 miles.

While driving about 30 mph on city street, chime rang and power steering cut out. car was still steerable without power assist, but became much more difficult at low speeds. sudden maneuver at slower speed would be nearly impossible. power steering came back on next time i started the car, but cut out again after a short time. i am aware that there are recalls for the exact same problem with the previous four model years of the same series of chevrolet malibus. the mileage on the car is about 48,000. clearly, the 2010 malibu needs to be recalled as well. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 70 mph, the steering column failed. the contact heard a loud noise coming from the steering wheel and a service warning indicator illuminated. however, the contact was unable to identify the nature of the service indicator illumination. after the vehicle was turned off and restarted, it operated normally except the service indicator was still illuminated. the failure occurred several times. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 65,000.

I was notified by my oldest daughter that the steering wheel in her car would not turn and that she was stuck in the middle of the street, she was in motion at the time of the incident, she and several other people were able to push the car to the side of the road. i instructed her to turn the car off and that i would have it towed to the service station that it was purchased from. what she explained to me is exactly what is being described in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 dated march 31, 2014.

I was on my way to work and i had to stop to get gas. everything was fine. i pulled away form the pump and proceeded to the end of the driveway. when i left the parking lot to pull into traffic, the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn. i was driving less than 5 mph. the traction control light was on, esc message, and service power steering system were activated. i drove back home and went to work in my other vehicle. 162,409 miles. i purchased the car brand new in february 2010. all oil changes and tire rotations have been completed at a chevy dealership. i've only purchased tires, two batteries, and windshield wipers for my car until last week. that was the engine coolant sensor. until now i always bragged and said that my malibu was the best car ever because i never had any issues with it.

Car had been parked for apx 2hrs. got into car and what appeared to be water dripped from under the dash onto the floor just under the emergency break peddle. it had rained within the last hour. thought of it as odd but not a real issue. within one minute of driving the steering wheel shuttered. steering light on dash eliminated. steering became difficult. light went out. parked car. restarted car and let idle s few minutes. steering light went on again. searched online. looked under dash. clear fluid on emergency break peddle. a few drops of moister in same area. parked car.

I got the car in 2015 and from that i have had problem with the steering light coming on and shutting off the power steering which my wife was driving and she lost control of the car and almost ran into a pole. this has happened more than one time and when she turn off the car, it works again but then happens again. i have more problems with the headlights going out over and over and the socket being burned out and have to replace them as well now my radio has power but doesn't come on, after it was just working. i can't hear any door chimes or turn signal signs. it like a problem after a problem with the electrical components in this car. i am buy this car but we don't even feel safe to drive it. it has only 79000 miles but the problems started happening around 50,000 miles and when i got the car it had 43,000 miles i believe.

While driving on an interstate i lost all power steering. the powering steering light came on and i had to try to move over to the shoulder which was very difficult. very hard to turn the steering wheel without power steering. i'm just glad i was driving and not my wife. this happened more than once. after shutting off the car it went back to normal but would happen more often over time. i always knew the car had steering issues but always thought it was just the tires . finally when the wheel would just shake while in park i did some research and found out this is a major recall in many general motors cars which include every model year malibu except the 2010. for some reason the 2010 model there is only a special coverage warranty, not a recall. gm admits there is a major defect with the power steering recall on all these cars but for some reason didn't recall the 2010 model. they only did the special coverage bulletin. if you are over 150,000 miles or 10 years your out of luck. you put your life on the line driving it. since they put the special coverage on it they are admitting it has the faulty parts in the cars. unexceptable . all cars that they know have these problem parts need to be taken off the road .

Tl* the contact owned a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 60 mph, the power steering seized and the vehicle crashed into a jersey barrier. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the air bags did not deploy and there were no injuries. a police report was filed. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14e044000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was destroyed and towed. the failure mileage was unknown.....updated 07/05/16 *bf *cn

Right now i have the service esc and service traction light on again for the 3rd time. i took each time to chevy classic in grapevine tx and they told me no codes the 1st time, took it to clay cooley in irving--light came on then no codes they showed. today 4-15=16 light came on again and i took it to classic chevy and they found 3 codes this time. they say i will have to pay for this! i should not since there was an open recall on 5/14/2014 for 2010 malibu's. my car is doing this now !@!!@ it needs to be fixed at no charge to me!! i feel like this is the most dangerous car on the road for me and my daughter. i don't want to be a statistic if we have a car crash and it was all because chevy kept making excuses to not fix my crap car for me. the other recall was the brake system not illuminating i got that letter a little too late . someone rear ended me in oct 2012 while i was stopped at a red light. maybe those stupid back brake lights were not working then!!!!!! someone at classic or clay cooolye chevy needs to fix this esc light on my car and fix all the recalls for free. i also have an eps recall letter that was sent to me but someone at chevy told me the light has to come on for them to fix it. this is ridiculous. my car needs to be fixed for all these problems it has no matter if the light is on or not. but the light is on for service esc and traction right now!@ gm or chevy needs to pay for it and fix this car. the consumer stated the dealer did not completely fix the problem. they only lubricated and she continued to experience problems with the brakes, service light and esc light. also, the front axle was leaking.

At idle and acceleration, the steering wheel will move back and forth.

The power steering in the vehicle will randomly stop working making it very difficult to steer. once the car is shut off for a few minutes and turned back on the power steering will work as it should until it randomly goes out again. this is dangerous and should be recalled! the recall only covered up to 2009 and should of included 2010.

Car only has about 3,0070 miles on it and power steering has gone out. i get the messages when i start the car that "power steering" and "service esc." and when i drive there is no power steering.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the steering seized and all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact had to restart the vehicle for it to operate normally. east pat o'brien chevrolet (2810 bishop rd, willoughby hills, oh 44092, (440) 348-0553) was informed of the failure, but did not diagnose or repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 85,000.

While driving the car at normal traveling speed the electronic stability control shuts off and the car goes into manual steering which makes the car very difficult to control and has almost caused two accidents and has made me ark the car because i feel it is far too dangerous to drive. this started occurring february15th and continued until i parked the car on feb2st.

Letter from senator brown on behalf of constituent re 2010 chevy malibu. *smd the consumer received a recall letter regarding the power steering. when she took the vehicle to the dealer, she was informed they could diagnose the issue using their electronic equipment. on november 1, 2015, the power steering went out again as she was driving. the consumer went to another repair facility and had the problem diagnosed. however, the repair facility was not a gm dealership. *jb

Steering column popping, clunking, and binds up during driving or stationary. more often when turning right but happens when turning left. sometime the car needs more force to return straight after veering right on highway.. could not turn into right lane because the steering wheel would not turn that sharp until it popped. dealer said the steering box separated and needs replaced; its a $1,095. repair for me

I received a letter from general motors dated september 2015 which identified that there is a potential steering problem with my car which may occur suddenly without prior warning. the car may lose power steering assist and be hard to steer according to the letter. the letter offers an extended warranty. i have checked for recalls related to gm vehicles. there is a recall identified for the problems identified in the letter which are identical to those described in the letter. the recall reference details are identified below nhtsa campaign id number: 15v064000 nhtsa action number: ea11014 my question is why isn't this car being recalled to fix this problem? the letter states that if i believe i have this problem i "may want" to contact my chevrolet dealer. if i incur this problem i can foresee a potential for an accident that could result in property damage, bodily injury or perhaps death. i don't want to wait until that happens. i can provide a scanned .pdf file of the letter; unfortunately i don't see a way to do that on this form.

We had just gotten off of the highway and were in the drive through waiting on our food when all of a sudden the wheel locked up. we had to pull into a parking spot and tried to figure out what was going on. we waited about 1 1/2 and tried to turn the wheel again and it was working. the next morning we rented a car and took the vehicle into the dealer ship to get repaired. they called us back later in the day to tell us that the sensor went out on the power steering and it would have to be repaired. we looked online and saw that there had been recalls related to this issue for the 2010. the dealer told us that we were not covered due to the mileage on the car. in looking online there are hundred's of other people the are having this same issue with the 2010 models. why is this not covered under a recall if they are aware that this is a problem. we paid $671 our of pocket for this repair.

Takata report car lose's steering out of no where lights on dash flash.shows recall for other years but not 2010. even thou sticker on door of car says was built in 2009.type in vin. says no recalls at this time is confusing when have seen that there was one. campaign # 14v252000 figure just another way gm covering up their tracks. at our lives expense. would enjoy some help from someone!
