We have classified the 57 complaints from 2009 Chevrolet Malibu about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
My 09 chevy malibu lt brake lights will illuminate without the brake pedal being pressed.therefore signalling to other drivers that i am slowing, when in fact i am not. also when the brake pedal is deliberately pressed to indicate the vehicle is slowing, the lights go out entirely, signalling to other drivers that i am not slowing down when in fact i am! this is a huge safety issue! i parked my vehicle today january 1, 2020 to test the functionality of my brake lights and the brake lights illuminated while i was outside of the vehicle, indicating i was pressing the brake pedal. once the pedal was compressed, the rear lights went out entirely indicating the brake pedal was not compressed. also the cruise control of the vehicle has never worked properly since purchasing the vehicle. it will not initiate or maintain set speed causing fluctuations in travel speed. so i refuse to use the feature as this too is a real safety concern.
While the vehicle is in motion the dash will display the traction control service light and the screen will read service traction service esc, the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is not pushed and turn off when it is pushed. the cruise control also can not be engaged. the brake switch was replayed however all problems came back 2 weeks later. all these issues have been on going.
I have had problems with this vehicle from day one. i filed a report previously and i am filing another one in reference to my power transmission. i have a 2009 chevy malibu, 4 speed, automatic. i was driving and the vehicle downshifted itself without my doing anything, almost causing an accident because it would not shift into high gear. something popped in the vehicle and the gear shifted for a little bit and worked and then it happened again. i think the shifting cable may have fractured or separated. this was very nerve wracking, because it was in the late evening hours and traffic was extremely heavy. now it is sitting in the driveway.
Warning lights on dash contantly flash: esc, brake lights, tire sensors, tire traction, engine reduce speed. the car turns off while actively driving (in motion) , sometimes will start up in neutral or park right away and sometimes not. on i-95 and city street. dealership stated the timing chain need to be done so it got done and car still doing the same thing. sensors also has been replaced.
When starting my car, i attempt to take it out of park and i need to step on my brakes as if i am slamming them just to move my car out of park. my brake lights are reversed, i noticed this at night when a car almost hit me. i thought it was the brake sensor so i changed it and that didn't fix the issue. since then 3 cars have almost hit me because of this braking issue. while driving my traction light also comes on, it states 'service traction, service esc' and makes my car shake.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the vehicle accelerated without warning. also, when the contact depressed the accelerator pedal, the vehicle did not accelerate. the vehicle was taken to regal lakeland (925 bartow rd, lakeland, fl 33801, 863-904-1170) where it was diagnosed that the cylinder head failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 118,368.
While driving the power locks goes off. they go lock and unlock when driving down the road they unlock and lock when wr are at home and the ignition is off. tge brake ligjts stay on like i am hitting the brake peddle and the cruis control wont work bc the break lights stay on it cuts it off. i have been hearing noises coming from the shifter area a buzzing noise like a wire has crossed.
When driving the vehicle the service traction service esc & esc off lights come off/on seems to be worse when i turn the vehicle will drive rough at times, also the cruise control will fail to work. got a recall on this in 2017 took it into a dealer shop who applied gel to connectors said that fixed the problem, it certainly did not.i do not know if this is safe to drive my vehicle since it is the only one i own i do not have a choice. since this has been going on for more than a year now i can not give an exact date but it does happen daily..i need the repairs made by gm not me
My 09 malibu began acting up 1 yr ago when using cruise control, the security light would come on the car would bog down like it was losing power and the service esc and traction control off light would come on, then about 3 min liter it would all turn off, my mechanic did not know why. recently it has been misfiring and showing lights that say service esc, traction control off and the check engine light blinks as car bugs down like it is losing power. it does this at 30 mph and 50 mph. when i get the light check it says misfire in cylinder 3. i have changed the plug and coil multiple times in last 2 months. upon googling i found many others had the same issue with the same make and model. this started june 2017
My brake lights and fifth light in window come on without braking and go off when brake is pressed
The brake lights do not always come on when the brake pedal is pressed. other times the brake lights, including the center brake light is on without the pedal being pressed. note this occurs both when stationary and moving.
The car loses speed while driving then reduce power shows on dashboard. when stop engine shaking and sometimes does not start.. i took it to the dealer and they couldn't find problem i already spend over 4000 and still happen.
My brake lights stay on when i am driving the car. the cruise control will just stop working and the car of course slows down at this point. yesterday the low traction and eic light came on. this has been going on for several months with the brake lights and cruise control the low traction and eic problem just started yesterday. i have read page after page of complaints on this same thing happening on this model year make of car. i have had to take my car in for several recalls but i have not seen one on this particular issue. my car has 138,000 miles on in it and of course this happens while it is in motion on the highway road street etc. it could not happen if the car was not in motion. this is a scary thing to be driving your vehicle and pray your going to make it to where you are going without a crash.
A few minutes after i start driving the esc off/service traction light will come on and it keeps flashing back and fourth between error messages. my check engine light is not on, but when i go to accelerate my car jumps kind of. and if i let my foot off the gas it feels like i'm shifting gears and my car will start going slow. i'll push back down on the gas and i will seem like it's trying to get speed but takes a min. they are trying to say i don't have a recall but something is wrong clearly. the error lights will go on no matter if i'm driving or parked.
While in motion going to fl on rt 95 my speed control stopped working, what i didn't know until i got to fl. that my break lights were on all the time and when i would hit the breaks they would go off and then come back on. i took the car to a dealer in fl and they could not dublacate the problem. they did replace the third break light and after researching about the problem i told them to change the break peddle switch. i drove back from fl to pa. with no problems. i know there were recalls about the bcm and did receive other letters that if a break light problem like above would happen to take it to a dealer. this is a very dangerous problem. sent reinversment papers tochev. but they sent me s letter telling me they would not pay for repairs.
My rear passenger door lock disengaged from the automatic locks and can only be opened from the inside. (spring 2016) my traction control is periodically saying that it has malfunctioned but does not always. when the light comes on, i feel a pulse as i'm braking and sometimes if it comes on while i'm driving i'll feel a slight jolt through the accelerator pedal. i also hear a click noise like the pedal may disengage. (late summer 2016) i don't know if it's related but since most things seem electrical, my radio sometimes will not turn off and seems to do what it wants during times when other things are seemingly malfunctioning (i.e. in conjunction with the traction control issue). on several occasions, i have taken the key out of the ignition, opened the door but my radio doesn't turn off. (late summer 2016) on several occasions, i have taken the key out of the ignition, but the car seems to still be running, like idling. i've thought it was the cooling system, but i've never had this happen in the last 22 years i've been driving nor heard it from anyone else i ask. (late summer 2016) i have also been driving, on several occasions, with cruise control engaged and then realize that i'm slowing down only to find the cruise is no longer engaged. the first few times i thought it was me. now, i rarely use it because it's not consistently reliable. (late summer 2016) while my fuse and bulbs are fine, both of my taillights are not working. (late november, 2016 when someone brought it to my attention). *tr
The brake lights would turn on while driving and the rpm tach would rev uncontrollably. when the brake is applied, the light turns off and the esc warning appears on the dash. fixed in 2014 as part of the exterior lighting recall (14v252000). as of the last two months, the problem started up again. first, i went and diagnosed it at a repair shop and it told me the brake position sensor needed to be calibrated. after that was fixed, the problems occurred again and replaced the sensor. after the second time, the problem was still not fixed. after going to another dealership and getting the concern fixed, it is still not fixed.
Recall fix failure - the recall fix was applied by the dealership for the 'brake lights may or may not randomly illuminate' issue, nhtsa action 13005, however it is only temporary. after a few months the identical symptoms occur at the same frequency. no new symptoms are present and no previous symptoms are absent. these include; brake lights illuminating with no pressure on the brake pedal, brake lights turning off when pressure is applied to brake pedal (including holding the brakes at a stop), cruise control failing to activate, traction control turning off, esc turning off, and vehicle gearing down (as low as 3rd gear at 60 mph before intervention) to assist by engine braking. most symptoms occur at standstill as well as city and highway speeds. the dealership's stance is that, once a recall is applied, the ticket is closed and is the vehicle owner's responsibility to cover the cost of further fixes.
In december of 2014, a chevrolet dealer performed repairs to address nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (i had not experienced any problems related to this issue at the time). recently i have been experiencing the symptoms related to this recall, including the "service esc" and "service traction" messages, the brake pedal requiring extra pressure to get the vehicle out of park, and the disabling of cruise control. i have not had the opportunity to check if the brake lights also exhibit the problem described in the recall. the problem has triggered while i'm braking, as well as when i was at highway speed with the cruise control engaged, without applying the brakes.
Driving at 65 mph on the interstate and esc light, check engine light, and security light came on. the speedometer needle and the fuel guage needle started jumping sporadically and then i lost power for a moment and could not accelerate. had to coast to the side of the road. very dangerous situation. turned the car off and restarted, and it happened numerous more times. had to end up having it towed. it is in the shop now, and they haven't determined what is wrong yet.

Sudden loss of power steering, nearly caused a wreck in parking lot. impossible to steer car due to resistance in wheel. *tr
On tuesday february 3rd 2015 i was on my way home from work when my 2009 chevy malibu cut off on me. the check engine and traction lights came on and a message of power steering service esc came on. cars had to swerve around me to avoid collision luckily i had not yet made it onto the interstate. i turned the engine off, waited for five minutes and restarted the vehicle. upon restart all of the lights and messages were gone and the car was operable. i researched this issue and found that is a known issue and even on recall. i called gm and i was informed by a rep that while this is a known issue and is a recall for my model my vin number does not meet the recall. i do not understand how a known issue that i am currently experiencing is not covered by gm. this is a extreme hazard to myself, other drivers and my newborn child that i travel with. i am very angry, disappointed and i feel betrayed by gm and chevrolet. i will be contacting my lawyer, sending letters to gm and blogging to warn people of the dangers and hassles of purchasing and driving a chevy. *tr
Service esc light comes on &power steering goes out. happens over and over randomly. dealership told me it was a battery issue since the power steering is electrical, however i replaced the battery and the issue persists. after searching the internet i saw a ton of other chevy malibu owners have the exact same issue. *tr

I was driving down the freeway between 70 & 75 mph. i heard brakes screeching behind me. i then realized that my cruz had also went off. i knew that my brake lights had come on for no reason again as they had in the past. i was sure cars were going to start rear ending each other because they thought i had slammed on my brakes. when this is occurring with my vehicle the brake lights are off when i'm stopped at a light or a stop sign and the brake lights come on when i take my foot off the brakes. the car will jerk like it is trying to stall. the rpm's will surge to 4000 while at the same time the car is slowing down. the cruz will not engage when the brake lights are on. these problems only occurs when the brake lights will not go off. *tr
2009 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to body control module connection system recall reimbursement. *smd the consumer stated in june 2014, the vehicle wasn't running smoothly. it seemed to exhibit a jerk motion and felt as though it was going to stall. the esc light would illuminate and then go out. the dealer made some repairs on june on june 27, 2014. after the repairs were made, the consumer received a recall letter. however, the parts were not available. gm informed the consumer, the repairs were not covered by the recall. according to the invoice, the fuel injector wire was replaced. recall # 14v252000 updated 12/30/15.*jb
After filing two complaints with you, and receiving a recall alert from you, i am being told by gm that my vehicle, a 2009 malibu built between the years specified in your recall notice, is not included in the recall you alerted me about. how is this possible? the referenced recall # 14v252000, as he experienced the same malfunction, as described in the recall. the consumer has invoices, that date bate to 2011, where he had to take the vehicle, back to the dealer several times, for an inoperable cruise control and esc lighting illuminating. updated 07/16/14
Beginning on april 15, 2014 my car flashes esc off, service esc, service traction. this happens often and it turns off the traction control in my car and causes the cruise control to cease function. *tr
When driving the alert will sound alerting that engine power has been reduced. the electronic stability control is then turned off and traction control is lost. when the accelerator is pushed it hesitates before accelerating. *tr
I did not have an accident yet. there was a recall for my car. the information i provided above on march 13, 204 i took the car back to the dealer to have it fixed. but the problems are still happening..i took it back and they said it was just some water leaking on the electrical wiring and would need replaced. i did not have the money at the time but did take it to my local mechanic where he also put it on the computer and advised that there is no water leakage. i have another incident the other day where i lost power and almost got in an accident. my taction got disabled as well. i have an appointment at kenny ross in irwin to take it back so they can look at it again, but i don't trust them. the car was bought with low mileage and i go no where as i work from home, still has low mileage..i should not be having problems. the original recall repairs were never done...can you please advise what i should do in this ase. *tr
For the last year or so i have been having issues with my brake lights ingaging and my cruise control inoperable. i currently have a 2009 malibu. a friend was driving behind me once and mentioned later that i was riding my brakes all the way home. i was not. i notice a few days later this happened again, but it was dusk and i could see from my rear window the reflection of my break light, it was on and my brake was not ingaged. this has happened several other times, to my knowledge. if i tap my brakes the lights will go off, however will come back on within a few seconds. i'm highly concerned about a rear end collision. if i actually do have to stop quickly and the person behind me hitting me because my break lights are not functioning properly. i've taken it in to a mechanic and they can't replicate the issues. it's intermittent. *tr
While driving the car at any speed the vehicle will accelerate on its own and the rpm will increase to 4 or higher as if i am smashing the gas. during this time of the rpm fluctuation you can hear the engine sound louder and feel the acceleration almost like a jolt. at night when driving the car you can see the brake light illuminate without ever touching the brakes. i've taken the car to the dealership several times regarding this matter they claim it has been fixed, however i'm still having the same problem. when it is warm/hot outside, when using the keyless remote to lock/unlock the car all locks will stick. the only way i can get into the vehicle is to use the key to open the doors and if i have groceries in the back seat i will have to crawl from the front to the back to open the doors. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the anti lock brake system and the electronic stability control warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the bcm wiring harness needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic , vehicle speed control). the contact stated that after the repairs, it was discovered that the brake lights failed to illuminate when the brake pedal was depressed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
The brake lights will come on randomly. this also causes the cruise control to kick off. the lights will stay on for varying lengths. *tr
While driving at 70 mph with cruise control engaged, the third brake light in the rear window would randomly come on causing the cruise control to shut off. soon after this happens i get warnings on the dash to service the ecs and traction control system. it has been getting gradually worse and with the brake light activating, could cause drivers behind me to think i am stopping when i am not. this problem was mentioned in an article in usa today a couple of weeks ago, that gm will be issuing a recall for. *tr
The cruise control was malfunctioning and after researching the problem i discovered that the brake lights could also be affected. when applying the brake the light in the rear window would actually go completely off. the repair is described in tsb 08-05-22-009c and was completed. the problem appears to be fixed. however it appears there was a previous recall for this type of problem with earlier general motors models and the problem is still recurring. chevrolet has not send any kind of notice to owners about this potentially dangerous situation. the computer code c0131 is activated when this occurs. *tr
Brake lights come on intermittently while driving. there is no indicator when or how this is happening. it has affected the cruise control option as well as the traction control on the vehicle. this is a safety concern for all motorists - unsure when a care is actually stopping and or accelerating. *tr
2009 malibu brake light stayed on while driving then when i hit my brakes the lights would go off no one knew when i was using my brakes heard this isn't the first time why do the have to wait till someone crashes or dies before they fix it also it kicked off the cruise control . *tr
2009 malibu brake lights stay on while driving then when i press my brakes the lights would go off no one knew when i was using my brakes. this was brought to my attention when i was on a major hwy/speed limit 70 mph when all of a sudden traffic was stopping. the cars behind me were coming at a high speed, but luckily the car directly behind me just short of crashing into my rear missed me. . he got out of his car while the traffic was stopped and approached me to let me know i had no break lights and he also noticed that prior to stopping my break lights were on. in the meantime i had warnings pop up on my car service traction/esc service. well of course, my car was taken to a shop where it showed a break switch needed to be replaced and switch brake needed to be calibrated by the dealership. the car was taken to the dealership and the break switch failed when they performed brake position calibration. the gentlemen said that the switch could be bad even thou it was a new one that was purchased from the dealership. they replaced it again and re-calibrated and afterwards said everything works well. within two weeks the problem with breaks are still there. there is a major problem we have with the 2009 malibu. i?m just lucky i?m still alive. what upsets me the most is the problem is there, but dealerships want to keep replacing parts and charging you $$$$ for something that needs to be recalled before someone gets killed! *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving 75 mph with the cruise control activated, the cruise control disengaged independently and the contact noticed that the brake lights were illuminated. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileage was 80,000.
When driving my 2009 malibu my brake lights will come on. when tapping the brake they go off, but when i need to use the brake no lights show. when this happens my service esc and service traction lights also come on. im getting very aggravated, i have only owned this car since june 2012, and constantly having problems. *tr
This is a recurring problem, beginning nearly 2 years ago. i have had the vehicle in for repairs several times, but the last documentable incident is march 9, 2013. esc service light comes on, cruise control shuts down, brakes lights illuminating when they should not, and not illuminating when they should. there's always been some "thing" they find wrong, from re-calibration of the esc system to this last incident, where they told me it was the brake light switch! i had just had the vehicle in to have a headlight replaced the prior weekend and i never noticed the brake lights not working, and the dealer that replaced the headlight never mentioned it either. i'm thinking they would have if they could charge me to fix something additional on the car. i just paid $250 to replace what i was told was a burned out brake light switch on march 9th, (palmen motors, kenosha, wi), and its already recurring. i heard part of possible recall on wnn abc news and started researching and ended up at your site this morning. i want to report this. there's no telling how many dollars have been paid to mechanics to fix unnecessary repairs because of this! i am furious! i am hoping that if this is a recall, or made one, i can at least get some of my money back! thank you, *tr
The brake lights began to turn on when the brake pedal was not depressed, even when the vehicle was in park. when driving, the brake lights will stay on and the cruise control does not work. these problems may only last a couple of minutes but may also persist for greater than an hour at a time. the problem manifests itself somewhat unpredictably but its frequency and duration have increased over time. *tr
