Recently reported STEERING problems on 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

The electric power steering assist motor is malfunctioning, almost causing an accident, the steering wheel is "twitching" the steering will give out unless i restart the car. most of these are on recall but unsure why my car wouldn't be. almost caused a serious accident on highway.

Esc light came on while driving on 01-21. morning of 01-22 was complete loss of power steering while trying to leave driveway. ecs light remains on and power steering never returned even after 20 miles of highway and rural road travel. extremely dangerous. furious that only certain vin #s are part of recall when it clearly affects the vast majority of vins for this model year.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the electronic stability control off and traction control warning indicators kept randomly flashing. also, the steering wheel made an abnormal noise and vibrated during the failure. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v153000 (steering) and 14e044000 (steering). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 140,317.

Vehicle was in drive but stopped in a drive thru. service esc, power steering light came on. power steering went out and wheel would not turn. turned off car. problem went away after restarting.

The power of steering does not work. when driving or when i turn the car on the power of steering stops working. i looked online and notice a lot of people had the same problem. why was their never a recall on this?

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds or while stopped, the steering wheel shook. also, the power steering failed when the vehicle was started. the contact shook the steering wheel a couple of times to get it to operate. the failures recurred several times. the dealer and the manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

Loss of power steering while driving on a curvy backroad (sr 724). i returned the car to my house and switched vehicles. later i took the car to the garage for repair --there was no power steering problem. upon looking up the code, the garage said it was the steering shaft torque sensor. garage (autopro, inc - shillington, pa 19607) replaced the part. issue seems very similar/the same as recall 14v153000 which was for "certain 2008-2009 chevrolet malibu's." based on online research, there are many owners of the same vehicle that have had this issue and were also told that their vin was not covered.

Driving, power steering freezes, cannot change lanes, or turn. it will suddenly turn into old school power steering, and i can muscle it home. this is a known safety issue p, due to median of error. they seem to think all of the other 2009 malibu's do this, but not mine. what a ridiculous notion. i am a single mother, nursing student, hoping i had bought a really nice car. now i fear my death daily.

This car first belonged to my mother and i borrowed it once to go out of town to pittsburgh which introduced me for the first time to the problem with the power steering because of what i thought the cause was extreme cold. now i have transferred over the title and the car is supposed to be my daily reliable source of transportation but the power steering stops working and gives a service warning regardless of outside temperature and happens 3-4 times in a 20 minute drive at it's worse. at first the solution was to just turn the car on and off but that isn't possible when you're on an interstate so it has now become a safety issue. i saw there was a recall but i do not believe my vin # was apart of the recall but it is a serious issue that puts my life in danger in unpredictable and sporadic moments of my daily drives and i would greatly appreciate any help in finding a solution.

Power steering and service esc/traction light comes across the dash as i'm driving randomly. when this happens my steering wheel becomes stiff and hard to turn. i can turn the car off and back on and it'll be fine but it does come back eventually.

My esc light came on randomly while in park and i lost power steering. shut the car off and then back on it was fine, light went away. a few days later driving down the highway esc light comes on, wheel begins shaking and lost power control, tried to pull off and turn the car off, like before, the light will not go off. no power steering at all in my car for about 3 days.

The power steering goes out causing an electrical stability concern which is very dangerous and has nothing to do with my own upkeep. the car is in motion at the time that the stability of the steering wheel gets really stiff. this increases accidents

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 45 mph, the power steering indicator illuminated and the power steering seized. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 155,000.

The power steering message comes on when you start the vehicle and then says esc off. steering wheel won't turn. turn the car off and most times if u turn the steering wheel while starting the car it will go off. other times it takes 2 to 3 times of restarting. tonight driving home the power steering light came on and the steering went out. had to pull over and turn off the car and restart it. the steering wheel is shaking and vibrating all the time now.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the steering wheel suddenly became difficult to turn in either direction. in addition, the check power steering and service esc messages displayed. the vehicle was taken to cambe chevrolet (704 s. heaton st, knox, in), but the cause of the failure could not be determined. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 120,000.

The car has the 2.4 4 cylinder with the unreliable electric power steering unit that shuts off almost everytime the car is driven.it shuts off and the car must be turned off then restarted before steering is restored.it goes off under all driving situations sitting,in motion, turning, going forward or backing up.on city streets or major highways..it happens at all speeds and all weather conditions ...

I have no power steering when it goes out the steering wheel will shake and service esc message will appear in the message box on the dash it happens as soon as i start the car!

A week ago when starting my car and trying to leave the steer wheel locked up and it displayed 'power steering' on the dash and was dinging at me. i put it in park, shut it off, and turned it back on and it was gone. thinking it was just a fluke deal, i didn't bother to check into it. yesterday while driving on the freeway, the same thing happened. i was able to get off the freeway and put it in park at a stop light and shut it of. upon turning it back on the message had gone away and all was normal. about a mile later that same thing happened. it was like that for about two hours while trying to figure out what was wrong with it. i called a chevy dealership after seeing online that there were recalls on this issue and they verified that it was correct and if my car was experiencing that recall it would be fixed. i took it in first thing this morning and they informed me that the recall doesn't apply towards my car and that it was just an extended warranty. i'm confused how this can be a recall on only certain cars and not all. it's not safe for myself or other people on the road for my car to being doing this. i don't feel comfortable driving knowing that at any moment my power steering could quit working on me.

Powersteering starting periodically going out and esc notification would appear. eventually it completely quit. called chevrolet and was told my car is not part of the recall for that issue.

The power steering shut off mid turn and the service esc light came on. the issue went away after turning vehicle off and back on.

Power steering keeps going out makes it hard to drive straight and make tight turns and my low beams on my headlights keeps going out too. but there is no recall on my car at and it is really dangerous to drive with my family in it.

Power steering failed while driving. power steering and service esc warnings flashed on dashboard. vehicle very difficult to steer.

The esc was turned off making it difficult to steer the vehicle. there was a recall for this issue but my vehicle was not included. how is that possible?! i have also had issue with the fuel pump, headlights and arm bars. i bought this as a used vehicle 3 years ago and have had nothing but mechanical issue after issue. poorly manufactured vehicle. including having to change out the entire fuse box.

When driving down the highway power steering will quit working and it becomes extremely hard to steer(very unsafe condition). by turning off the ignition and restarting, steering will be fine until it happens again(which it does, can happen at any time, again very unsafe)

After driving the car one mile from home steering became difficult and a message appeared in the dic power steering. i pulled the steering wheel with two hands to get to the side of the road, turned the car off and when turned on the message was gone but the steering was still awkward and not as smooth as it should be

When diving i lose power steering. this has happened to me 4 times now i have had the car since april of 2018. an everything checked out in good health.

Power steering goes out anytime it wants and i need to let it sit or turn off vehicle.

I was driving out of town on the highway and my traction light came on then my steering esc light started flashing. the power steering went out and my car was difficult to steer off the road.

While driving and making turn steering wheel get stiff

Ecs deactivates and stais iluminated. issue makes steeting hard to manubrate. fuel issue. fuel spilled around gas pump cap.

My cars light will run across ecs and then power steering. the power steering will go out completely. this happened to me while pull in in a driveway and at a stoplight. so when going slower speeds.

The power steering failed and power steering came up on message board while backing out of driveway on 11-11-18.afraid to drive vehicle drove vehicle around block without power steering just as i was pulling into driveway the steering came back.what happened.worried in oregon.

Car began to make a random clunk when turning. took the vehicle to the dealer as soon as they were open. alignment began to pull. front end started to hum. dealer service manager said wheel bearings failing in front end. strut assemblies in front need replacement, knuckles that hold the strut assemblies to the frame were original, made out of aluminum, and are now rotted out and require replacement. intermediate steering column failing. the vehicle hasn't reached 90k miles yet. the cost of repairing the vehicle is nearing half of its retail value. allegedly no open recalls, despite a recall by dorman for the intermediate steering shaft. aluminum knuckles to hold struts to the frame? and that's not a design flaw? the replacement knuckle parts are $1200 not including labor. wheel bearings are about $762, the intermediate steering shaft is $290. strut assemblies are about $600 for both.

Well driving my car got hard to steer, the power steering light come on then i turned the car off, and restarted it then it began to drive back normal then it began to do the same thing again and every time i turned it off and started it back up it would return to normal but in order for the steering to return to normal i have to cut my car off and then turn it back on. it seems to happen as i am driving straight or sitting still

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. when the contact started the vehicle, "power steering" and "esc off" was displayed and the power steering assist malfunctioned. the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the failures were not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified, but the local dealer was not notified. the failure mileage was 153,000.

The car steering will randomly pull back and forth making it difficult to drive or maintain control. this happens both stationary and while in motion on every trip i make. the power steering also has cut out completely on one occasion while in motion making it extremely difficult to steer at low speeds and nearly causing an accident.

While driving the vehicle in motion on the interstate and highway the steering would act as if a car had no power steering for 1-3 sec the steering wheel would tighten up and very easy to loose control because it tightens up this has happen while driving straight and on a curve which i almost lost control called dealership and mention no recalls for this issue (its electric power steering )

While driving , power steering stopped work. steering got real hard and became real hard to turn my vehicle. there also seems to be some play (twitch) in steering column when stopped at a red light or stop sign. after a restart, it went away but same problem came back again the next day. there was message on dash regarding esc sevice and power steering. it all sounds similar to the dorman recall on other gm vehicles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving at unknown speeds, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact called nucar chevrolet (174 n. dupont highway, new castle, de 19720, (302) 327-1171) and was informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 204,000.

I have not had my 2009 malibu for almost a year now. i took it to the dealership to get looked at and they want to charge me 140 dollars for looking at it, just to tell me the transmission is messed up. i knew this. it started when i was driving to work and a light came on and it was really hard to turn the steering wheel. i had to slow way down because i could barely turn the wheel. this was a huge safety issue. i was terrified for my life with my three year old son in the back seat. i pulled off to the side and shut the car off, then started it up again. the steering wheel was fine. then again i got into my car the next day and it did it again! but only this time, it didn't stop. no matter what. then my car stopped shifting. i capped they chevy dealership and they set me up an appointment to bring my car in. i explained it was unsafe to drive it so they scheduled a tow for me. that following week, (carless) i was waiting for the tow to show up and no one came. i called the dealship and she said that something happened and i had to drive my vehicle in, i explained, again, that it was unsafe to drive. she told me that i couldn't get my vehicle looked at then if it wasn't there. i drove 20 miles going ten miles an hour with my hazards on to get it there, just to leave it there for three days then be told that my transmission is messed up and they needed four thousand dollars to fix it. needeless to say, my car has been sitting there for almost a year now. nothing being done to it. if my transmission is messed up... which it is.... it's because of them!! i checked my recalls and i have recalls for all of these things on a website. but not yours? i don't understand. please help.

Ok so this has happned multiple times now i have owned this car for about 3 years i will be driving speed dosent matter as its happned at low speeds of 25 aswell as on the highway going 65. all of a sudden my dash indicates and says traction control failure then service esc then my power steering cuts out. when i pull over and turn the car off then back on everthing goes back to normal as it never happned. please review this because ive herd other people saying they have had the same issues. this can be extremely dangerous as if this issue decides to act up when i navigate a turn

Tl* the contact called on behalf of the driver who owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel seized and the electric power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and able to drive normally. the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering column torque sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 155,207.

I was driving the car and the power steering went out and the esc light , traction light , battery light , air bag light , and all speed went all the way down as i was driving the car down the road. this problem has happened before but it has started again.

On may 13, 2018 at aprox 7:30am, i was traveling on ct-9 highway at 55mph preparing to exit the highway when suddenly car alert chimes came on and warning message about "service power steering"and i lost power steering as i was exiting. i had difficulty making a left turn at the end of the exit and pulled over to investigate. shut car off and inspected under hood/belts, everything ok. restarted car and message went away and car handled normally again.

When driving you lose power steering and cant turn the wheel they have this recal on some of the malibu cars

Power steering when out while trying to make a turn without any warning. turning became extremely hard and this would happen randomly at 1st. within the next couple of weeks it would happen over and over again. i took it to the mechanic and my mechanic said that it was the steering wheel torque sensor. i feel this is an extremely extremely dangerous and matter that should be taken care of. if i didn't have 2 hands on the wheel while i was turning 1st time it happened, it could easly pulled the other way in crashed into a car. thank god my elderly mother in law wasn't driving because she wouldn't of been able to turn the wheels with out the power steering. nhtsa says it does have a recall on this issue with the 09 chevy malibu but it doesn't appear with my vin.
