We have classified the 273 complaints from 2009 Chevrolet Malibu about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Takata recall i was at a stop sign at a very busy intersection. when i pulled out my power steering went out. i had no way in turning the vehicle. i had to reverse the vehicle and put it in park then turn off the vehicle. when turning back on vehicle was fine. drove a mile to local bank and it did it again in the drive thru. as i was trying to make it to work it went out as i was pulling into parking lot. the first time power steering went out two lanes of oncoming traffic had to stop to keep from hitting my vehicle. i was completely exposed. this is a family vehicle and in 9 years this should not be a concern for my family. the car said "power steering" & "esc" when it locked down. there is a recall # 14772 for 2004-2007 malibu's that state the same issue i am having.
Power steering becomes stiff after idling for a few moments. shut the engine off and restart and problem goes away. brake lights work intermittently. power door locks work intermittently when lock button is pushed several times. unlocking doesn't work at all unless car is put in reverse then back into park.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle shut off. the vehicle was able to be restarted and was driven to the contact's residence. the contact drove the vehicle to merel chevrolet (800 w henderson ave, porterville, ca 93257), but a failure code could not be produced and the dealer could not assist. the manufacturer was aware of the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired and continued to shut off without warning. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 137,000.
Key fob quit working. bought new key fob from chevrolet and chevrolet mechanic could not get it to program. lock switches on door stop working. car will lock itself. had to pay for lock smith because it locked me out.
Every time it rains or is very humid my all of the door locks will randomly lock and unlock ' whether i'm driving or the car is off and i am not inside. its creepy. the door panel on the driver side initially stopped working and was replaced in january 2018 but by feb the panel had stopped working again. the passenger side door only locks manually and never responded to driver side door panel controls when they were functioning. now that my warranty has expired, manual locking it is.
I am not sure where to start. door locks intermittently don't work, bluetooth just stopped working, have had to change headlight bulbs 3 times in 2 years, power steering went out (had that repaired by dealer at not cost), ac/heater/defroster used to shut off intermittently, now it just stopped working, driver's side seat heater stopped working, instrument panel randomly throws up error code (example: service airbag, service engine) oh and the paint is fading on hood roof and trunk. car has 75,000 miles and i used to love it. no i won't drive it out of town.
Driving the malibu down the country road and some code flashed on the dash and then said power reduction and now its making a weird noise and car only drives slow, if this happens on a highway their will be a crash as when the power reduction kicked on it turned off traction control and power steering making it hard to move the steering wheel thank goodness i was in the country with little traffic.
Car will not start and it gives message of service traction, service esc. i see that other 2009 maliibu have been recalled for the same reasons. why not mine? i have been researching and i think it may be the wiring. the recall #14v252000 covers this.
Passenger low beam keeps going out. i've replaced the bulb 3 times in one year, and even changed the housing. this seems to be an issue with several model years of the malibu.
The car loses speed while driving then reduce power shows on dashboard. when stop engine shaking and sometimes does not start.. i took it to the dealer and they couldn't find problem i already spend over 4000 and still happen.
The car's power steering went out while i was in motion, turning in a parking garage. an error message displayed saying "power steering failure - service esc". the first time this came up was about three months ago, and i took it to the chevy dealership and they fixed it under warranty. this same problem just came up again and i am beginning to think that this is a known problem, given the amount of recall information i've seen about this issue.
The brake lights on my malibu are not working. the brake lights illuminate without the brake pedal applied and turn off when the pedal is applied. also, my electronic stability control and cruise control do not work. i have had this fixed four times already, two which i paid for out of pocket, and then two from a subsequent recall. i brought my car in today to get it repaired for this problem the fifth time. is there something systemically wrong beyond what the recall addresses?
The door locks go up and down by there self.. which resorts to battery going dead... they never stop.. even when car is off they still flick up and down..
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that there was a progressing failure in which the door failed to unlock with the fob for the rear passenger side door lock. the other three doors had been able to lock and unlock with the fob. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle also received an inspection from an independent mechanic but the results were not available. the approximate failure mileage was 20,835. updated 08/24/17*lj *cn
Car turned off while sitting in the drive thru line. car turned off driving down the road at various speeds. sometimes will start back, sometimes will not start back and has to be towed. after waiting a few days the car will drive as normal and then the next time the car will turn off again. the car will turn over, but not crank. if you wait a few minutes, hours or days, the car may start and drive as normal for a few weeks and then have the problem again.
The vehicle continuously locks itself and the power lock buttons do not work to open the doors, you have to physically turn the car on and put it in gear then back in park to get the locks to disengage. there are times that the brake/head lights do not work or they turn on by themselves when the car is not running. earlier today 04-09-17 the vehicle would not start at first, after a few tries the engine turned over but while driving it in town it completely died. the vehicle restarted but could have caused an accident.
My power steering goes out and at the same time my traction control light comes on as well as the esc light my car vin is not on the recall but it is having the same problems as the recalled cars
For the last few months i been having trouble with my car. first it started with my lock buttons. whenever i would push the buttons nothing would happen but when i closed my doors it would start locking on and off all by themselves. my esc always giving me trouble one day the light is on and the next it's off. whenever the light was on i took it to get checked but no code came up. till this day i have trouble with my esc! at time it's would say it had cut off!!! the air bag sensor goes on and off also. some days it's on some days it's not!! well today march 29, 2017 i was driving to work and my car just starts to slow down. it wasn't taking no gas at so i pulled over and put the car in park. when i pressed down on the gas it gave it some gas. i took the car out of park and drove off
The electrical power steering on the chevy malibu 2009 disengages itself while car is in motion causing loss of power steering assist, that occur any time while driving and sometime locks itself in. when power steering is lost, greater driver effort s required to steer the vehicle, increasing risk of crashing. this happened to me while on a highway, and has completely lost power steering.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 15 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the battery needed to be replaced. the battery was replaced, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 64,000.
Both rear door locks do not operate with the remote. safety hazard!
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving various speeds, the windshield started to frost. the contact attempted to use the defroster, but the hvac defroster failed to function. as a result, the interior windshield became foggy. the contact also stated that the control head module failed to function and failed to clear the windshield. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that she needed the proper documentation to service the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000.
Vehicle has electronic stability control lights and the traction control service lights lit on dash. also rear brake lights will come on and or off intermittently. car has been repaired with a new brake light switch and a engine harness in the past year at the dealer. car is well taken care of and should be on the recall list but for some reason it is not.
I went to the pharmacy to pick up my prescriptions having no issues with my 2009 chevy malibu. when i started to leave the pharmacy, the steering locked for know known reason making the car unable to be driven. *tr
While in motion going to fl on rt 95 my speed control stopped working, what i didn't know until i got to fl. that my break lights were on all the time and when i would hit the breaks they would go off and then come back on. i took the car to a dealer in fl and they could not dublacate the problem. they did replace the third break light and after researching about the problem i told them to change the break peddle switch. i drove back from fl to pa. with no problems. i know there were recalls about the bcm and did receive other letters that if a break light problem like above would happen to take it to a dealer. this is a very dangerous problem. sent reinversment papers tochev. but they sent me s letter telling me they would not pay for repairs.
My 2009 malibu, which i purchased new in 2009: about 1&1/2 years ago it started running irregular, service esc-service traction messages came on car skidding emblem came on. i have had it to dealership where i bought it 3 times-each time they could find nothing wrong-took it to independent mechanic-he told me same thing. about a week ago i called general motors-first person i talked to said to call nhtsa that they couldn't do anything until a recall. called nhtsa told me to call gm again and start a case: i called and talked to [xxx], who was very helpful and contacted another dealership about fixing my car. i took it to them; they replaced the brake lam switch thinking that would fix it-did not. called gm again and wads told to take it back to dealership that there was nothing they could do as far as cost for fixing it was concerned. my car is just sitting idle because i am afraid to drive it more than a few miles-afraid it will stall out in traffic. i have looked this up on the internet hoping to get some information as to what is wrong. there are numerous people who are having this same problem with their malibus. none of the dealerships seem to know what is wrong and owners are stuck with paying to have numerous things replaced that do not fix the problem. it is timer someone took responsibility for this flaw and issue a recall. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
My electronic power steering failed to operate while driving suddenly and without warning. along with this happening, an esc inoperative light is illuminated along with a service power steering message on the instrument display. vehicle steering very hard to operate. have to turn car off and on multiple times to clear message and for some reason the power steering resumes to work. this now is a constant occurrence, to the point that i am unable to rely on this vehicle for safe travels.
The power door locks engage and disengage at random. when using the unlock button on the key fob or using the button inside the car, the passenger and rear door looks will partially disengage making it hard/impossible to open the door with out manually pulling the lock tab on the door. the electric stability control and traction control will random engage/disengage or display a service message on the cluster screen. the third break light illuminates at random, not always the break is applied. the radio will display random characters while on or go completely blank.
Brake lights, radio, trunk opener on drivers door , left turn signal, doors randomly lock , 3rd brake light dim, sometimes driver door won't open from inside or outside with door unlocked , sometimes drivers door won't shut, 105k miles on this car. this is the most expensive vehicle i've owned and it's the worst vehicle i've ever owned. the drivers door is stuck shut currently.
My rear passenger door lock disengaged from the automatic locks and can only be opened from the inside. (spring 2016) my traction control is periodically saying that it has malfunctioned but does not always. when the light comes on, i feel a pulse as i'm braking and sometimes if it comes on while i'm driving i'll feel a slight jolt through the accelerator pedal. i also hear a click noise like the pedal may disengage. (late summer 2016) i don't know if it's related but since most things seem electrical, my radio sometimes will not turn off and seems to do what it wants during times when other things are seemingly malfunctioning (i.e. in conjunction with the traction control issue). on several occasions, i have taken the key out of the ignition, opened the door but my radio doesn't turn off. (late summer 2016) on several occasions, i have taken the key out of the ignition, but the car seems to still be running, like idling. i've thought it was the cooling system, but i've never had this happen in the last 22 years i've been driving nor heard it from anyone else i ask. (late summer 2016) i have also been driving, on several occasions, with cruise control engaged and then realize that i'm slowing down only to find the cruise is no longer engaged. the first few times i thought it was me. now, i rarely use it because it's not consistently reliable. (late summer 2016) while my fuse and bulbs are fine, both of my taillights are not working. (late november, 2016 when someone brought it to my attention). *tr
Vehicle shut off while i was driving on city street to pick up my daughter from school, and has not started since. no traction, service esc and power loss messages appeared on the dash display. the dealer was unable to communicate with the onboard computers.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 35 mph, the contact noticed other vehicles flashing their headlights and blowing their horns. the contact realized that the driver side low beam headlight was out. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and repaired. two weeks after the repair, the failure recurred. the vehicle was repaired again, but the failure recurred three weeks later. an independent mechanic stated that the wiring to the driver side low beam head lamp was faulty. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 179,500.
All 4 door locking latches are not functioning correctly, right front door was locked in the lock position and would not open from inside or the outside, even after manually unlocking the lock or pulling the lock lever in the unlock position. i feel this is a safety issue and there should be a safety recall investigation performed on this mater. there is a possibility that the doors will not unlock manually or automatically in the event of a vehicle emergency leaving the drivers and passengers trapped inside the vehicle. the vehicle was in part at the time of the occurrence.
Not sure why my car wasn't on the gm safety recall 13036. the problems that are listed on this recall are the same problems i am having now. brake lights staying on while driving, cruise control not working, traction control and esc service lights coming on, brake pedal not working properly, etc. i am afraid someone will end up hitting me. i don't have the $ to fix it. and in this recall, which i'm not on,gm would service/perform at no charge. my car is in the guidelines (yr: 2004-2012 chev malibu) of this safety issue.
Service traction, service electronic stability control, electronic stability control off occurs while sitting and driving. car jerks skips and shakes. hard to pick up speed or go to the next gear, door lock on driver side stop working.
The brake lights would turn on while driving and the rpm tach would rev uncontrollably. when the brake is applied, the light turns off and the esc warning appears on the dash. fixed in 2014 as part of the exterior lighting recall (14v252000). as of the last two months, the problem started up again. first, i went and diagnosed it at a repair shop and it told me the brake position sensor needed to be calibrated. after that was fixed, the problems occurred again and replaced the sensor. after the second time, the problem was still not fixed. after going to another dealership and getting the concern fixed, it is still not fixed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while operating the vehicle, the traction control, brake, and esc sensor lights illuminated. also, the brake lights would illuminate even though the brake pedal was not depressed. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, service brakes). the contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. the failure mileage was 179,000. updated 10/04/16*lj *tr
Door lock actuators on this vehicle have failed within 30,000 miles of manufacture. this is a widespread problem with door lock actuators on 2008-2009 models documented all over the internet. i am unable to lock or unlock my doors electronically due to this chronically faulty part. it is unsafe for me to drive the car with my kids in the backseat because i would be unable to get them out of the locked car in an emergency (i currently have to roll down the window and manually unlock the door because the lock button is at the rear of the door). from what i can tell, gm has replaced this part with newer versions that resolved the issues, but they never contacted the public to offer to replace the faulty part. many gm customers are having to spend over $1,000 in parts and labor to fix this safety issue. while gm will argue that power locks are a convenience issue and not a safety issue, i would invite nhtsa to look at my car and see how it is physically impossible to unlock the back doors from the front seat and the process involved in rolling down the window to unlock and open the door. in an emergency, seconds count and i would not be able to get my kids out. they need to recall these actuators and replace them with the redesigned part number.
Car will intermittently not start. while camping in arizona my car wouldn't start. i took it to a repair shop where they replaced the starter and fuel pump. it started fine for a little while and then decided to randomly stop starting again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 45 mph, the contact was alerted by another motorist that the brake light was constantly illuminated, as if she were applying the brakes. the brake light dimmed when the brake pedal was depressed. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per a manufacturer recall in april of 2015 for the same failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 135,000.
The rear door electric door locks don't function all the time to lock or unlock the doors. operation is intermittent. i'm very concerned when children are in the car. the problem has existed for several months.
2009 chevy malibu - we've been having issue with the power window controllers/buttons to operate for several years but haven't had a change to get them checked. we have been avoiding to open and close the windows because there were times that they will open and close back up but yesterday, i open the window from the driver side and tried multiple times to close it and don't have any sucess.
Theft system light is on and i'm not able to start my car. the radio still works and all the lights and heater and a/c. i try to start the car a few times and sometimes it take several trys to get the car to start. this has been happening quite a bit
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that there was a progressing failure in which the key was turned over and the vehicle would not start. the contact experienced the failure numerous times without warning and had to wait an extended period of time for the vehicle to randomly restart. the contact had not received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). the vehicle was taken to a repair shop where it was diagnosed that the starter needed to be replaced. a mechanic replaced the starter and the key still would not turn over to start the vehicle. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 180,830. parts distribution disconnect.
Tl* the contact owned a 2009 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the vehicle also started decelerating while the accelerator pedal was being depressed. as a result, the contact was involved in a crash but the details were not available. the contact was able to get the vehicle pulled to the side of the road and shut it down. the vehicle became difficult to restart. the vehicle was driven a little further and the failure recurred. the vehicle was shut off and would not restart. the vehicle was towed. the vehicle was side swiped by another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. there was no police report filed. there were no injuries sustained. the vehicle was not destroyed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 171,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle jerked when the brake pedal was depressed and stalled as the traction control, electronic stability control, and check engine warning lights illuminated. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuse box was missing some fuses and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the contact stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, service brakes). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000.
Consistent problems with headlamps failing frequently. alternator fine. cause is due to corrosion of the wiring and wiring harness. manufacturer defect prevents replacement of headlamps, wires or wiring harnesses without removing front bumper, wheel and wheel well, making maintenance virtually impossible. headlamps failed in october 2014 and again in march of this year. general motors unwilling to help with problem. when operating the vehicles in low light conditions or at night, insufficient lighting makes it difficult to spot other vehicles, pedestrians, animals and other road hazards.
2009 chevrolet malibu ls 2.4l gas all door locks intermittently locking or unlocking by using either the key fob or the door panel buttons. the failure to lock and unlock occurs almost always when it's hot outside and the car sits in the sun, then the doors need to be locked and unlocked manually.locks are controlled by the (bcm) body control module which already has a recall #13036 for a faulty connector that causes brake lamp malfunctions. extreme safty issue that needs to be addressed asap!!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet malibu. while driving at any speed, the brake light remained illuminated, the traction control light illuminated, and the cruise control failed to function. in addition, the interior lighting would go from bright to dim and the daytime running lamps also failed to illuminate. the failure recurred everyday. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
My power locks want to unlock & lock while i am operating the vehicle. i am concerned because because with grandchildren if the doors malfunction as they have been they can open the doors while i am driving. this is a problem with these particular years. on carcomplaints.com 29 complaints not a lot however it is a safety hazard that needs fixing.
