We have classified the 127 complaints from 2000 Chevrolet Malibu about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the turn signals and hazard lamps worked intermittently. in addition, the horn would not sound. he cannot use the turn signals to indicate his intent to turn the vehicle, which could result in a crash. the dealer stated that the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 03v327000 (exterior lighting:hazard flashing warning lights:switch); therefore, he would have to pay $300 to have the component replaced. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 85,000.
Auto theft system light starts blinking and car will not start. car will not start until 10 minutes later. if car does not start after this, it will take another 10 minutes before you can try to start it again. this has been happening since i bought in 2001. will leave me stranded everywhere. *tr
Intake manifold gasket replaced three times under and outside of warranty. hazard switch malfunctioning - almost caused accident turning signal/wiper washer switch malfunctioning premature brake wear until calipers replaced check engine light various emissions and fuel vapor leaks. *jb
The anti-theft ignition lock device malfunctions every day, 3 or more times in most cases, you have to wait 10 minutes to attempt to start the car again and even then it may not start and you have to wait 10 more minutes, now its not a "crash your car through a building and kill people" type of problem but it is a "sit in your car in a terrible neighborhood and pray you dont get raped, murdered, robbed, etc" problem. i recently was working in inner city baltimore and was required to park my car on greenmount avenue, which is the worst of the worst and sometimes it would take me an hour to start my car!!!!!!!!! this is utterly ridiculous and this is the reason nobody wants to buy american made cars anymore!!!!!! take responsibility gm!!!!!!!!!! i shouldnt have to pay $300+ to get this issue fixed. gm should pay for it and also remove this device from all of thier vehicles. it was obviously not a well thought out theft deterrent. and further more there are several other issues on my vehicle that i have been told are "notorious" on these cars. the whole entire brand should fall under the lemon law. i want some satisfaction, they need to do a recall for this. it is the ignition lock cylinder and housing assembly and i currently dont have the money to get it fixed, and i may never have the money seeing as how it constantly makes me late for work and i may lose my job because of it! way to go chevy-thumbs up! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. as the contact approached the vehicle, he noticed that the windows appeared to be black due to smoke inside the passenger compartment. he opened the door and noticed that the dashboard and instrument panel were melted and burned. the failure extended to the drive shaft area. the vehicle has not been repaired. the vin and engine size were unavailable. the current and failure mileages were 50,000.
Passlock anti theft light comes on mainly on humid days and the car will not start for at least a ten minute wait. sometimes we have to wait 2 or 3 times. i believe gm should put out a recall since thousands of other people out there are having the same problem with this car. *jb
I own a 2000 malibu with a passlock problem, just like thousands of other suckers. the theft system light comes on and you have to wait 20 minutes to start the car. great feature! *tr
Anti-theft system keeping car from starting. *tr
In hot and humid or wet weather, my 2000 chevy malibu's passlock system goes into fail safe/standby mode when i attempt to start the vehicle which renders my vehicle unable to start for a minimum of 10 minutes. this has left me innumerable times stranded for 10 minutes in rather dangerous locations such as ill-lighted parking lots after dark. the frequency of these failures recently began to increase, so i researched information about the possibility of disabling the anti-theft system that fails to do little more than cause a headache for my mechanics. to my dismay, i found that chevy's passlock system cannot be overridden by any method short of a do-it-yourself re-wiring project. to have the problem fixed temporarily, i could have the entire ignition system replaced by chevrolet for somewhere in the neighborhood of $450. note that i said temporary because from the stories of those who have had the repair done, it will need to be done again a few years later as the ignition wears down once more. i am also concerned by stories i hear about further problems that drivers have had with the passlock system where the car engine turns itself off while being driven and requires that the driver pull over to restart the vehicle. i hope this never happens to me. given that this has been happening to every model of car that has had this passlock system in place since passlock's inception, i am surprised that there have been no recalls made by chevrolet in almost 10 years. it would seem that chevrolet is more interested in profiting from continually repairing a system that we could just get rid of and not in the safety of its consumers. therefore, i ask that you please mandate a recall on all chevrolet's with the passlock anti-theft system. *tr
I would like to report the problem im having is with my wife's 2000 chevy malibu, and from what i have been reading this will cause a number of deaths and crashes if not already but no one has figured it out yet. the car will not start at the most important time maybe when she may one day may be trying get away from a rapist or a murder. and no i am not the only one there are over thousands of people like someone child or wife that is right at this moment stuck on the side of the road, or maybe the car turn off on i-95 while they were doing 70 on the interstate with a 18 wheeler moving at the same speed that could not stop because of the problems with the anti-theft system and ignition switch. to the point the car will cut off when you are driving it down the road without no warning, and if you make it safe to where you are going the car will not start if you try to. you have to wait 10 min. to try to start it. there many people out there having this problem chevy is not help out any. it will not give a trouble code, so they skip around with uneeded repairs. something needs to be done this is a big problem. and who is to say how many people that many have been hurt or killed because of this that may not known about this. it is a death trap and needs to have a look into. thanks *tr
Turn signals were working intermittently. bought from chevy dealership. repaired at private shop. cost to repair: $125 to replace hazard switch. bandaid solution: bang the dash until the signal worked. *tr
The car began locking up with the theft system" light blinking. the car will not crank until you waited 10 minutes for it to stop blinking. this can happen two or three times in a row, at least once a day. i have been told there is no way to fix it.*ak
I have a 2000 chevy malibu that has had a number of problems with turn signals and general other safety related concerns. now on multiple occurances the car will not start with the oem key and wireless controller. the "theft system" light turns on sporadically leaving me unable to start the car... the car cranks but the theft system disables the car from turning over or fully starting. i have sent the car into the shop several times where they were unable to replicate the problem. now they finally "pinned down" the issue and are requesting over $800 to replace the ingition module. i have read enough about this issue on forums and the auto repair (non-dealership) has admitted to "fixing" this problem on many mailbu's prior to mine. i have been stranded several times, incurred over $375 in towing and auto shop expenses...
4-2007 gas was pooling around engine, replaced intake gasket, next time i drove car , same problem, they had to do over ( their dime) because failed to replace o-ring. 9-06-07 would not start at gas station, 9-13-07 pass lock sys. installed ignition switch lock cylinder. 11-13-09 turn signals, tail lights not working, between 11-13-09 @ 4-07-2010 , i have been back several times, because signals failed off and on while driving. told me, they could not do anything until they could see it fail, which it did on 4-07-2010 while i was close to shop. flasher switch/relay bad, replaced. 6-10-10 harmonic balancer worn and serpentine belt & seal replaced. 2-23-12 water pump leaking, replaced. 6-14-12 replaced sparks plugs, wires, complete injection flush. 9-14-2012 strong fuel smell (fumes) inside car and under hood, performed fuel leak test, no visual signs of fuel leak. checked vent canister, gas cap, no fuel codes. have been fumes several times since but by the time i drove to shop could not smell fumes. 4-22-13 fumes very strong inside car and under hood, drove to shop and they could smell fumes , put it up on rack and checked all underneath, no sign of leak under car or under hood. no one can tell me what the problem is but say process of elimination is only way. why on 6-10-2010 need to replace serpentine belt and seal and again on 2-08-2013 remove and replace serpentine belt and belt tensioner?? when this car reached 62,000 i have had nothing but trouble with it and now i am afraid of a fire, gas is leaking somewhere!!!! i only have 97,461 miles. is not there some way or someone who can find origin of the fuel leak?
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. while driving 70 mph the vehicle decelerated to 50 mph and then shuts off completely. the contact was forced to merge onto the median in order to avoid the busy intersection. the technician stated that the failure could have been caused by the signal light. the contact stated that no other failures occurred since the vehicle left the shop. the current and failure mileage were 50,000.*ak
Upon starting the 2000 chevy malibu, the power windows wouldn't work, the fuel gauge read as empty, the gear indicator didn't light up. this problem continued for up to 2 minutes, then everything would come on. the "service vehicle soon" light would come on intermittently and eventually the "check engine" light came on. we took it to a certified mechanic who determined that a faulty ignition switch was the cause of the problem. *tr
The truth is all i want is my safety and my problem is very serious +the problem is listed under the nhtsa defect investigation# ea02037 and recall# 03v327000 with dates of recall from feb 1st 2000 - may 31 2001 my vehicle was manufactured in oklahoma in april 2000 however calling gm a representative of gm named [xxx] informed me that my gm is not on the recall list after 30 min of trying to figure out why i asked for a supervisor named [xxx] whom was not in the office and is supposed to call back and then i asked for that person supervisor presumably the manager and i was told i could not speak to that person and when i asked for that persons name i was told that the managers it was against company policy to give out the managers name and also against company policy to give out any last names furthermore i was given incorrect information about the manufacturing plant of my vehicle. i believe i should have my car on the recall list if i fit the description accurately and fall in between the correct dates it is a very serious safety hazard and could become fatal if not fixed very soon. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
1. ebcm failure 2. hazard light failure. *nm
2000 chevy malibu passlock anti theft system- continues to activate with original keys will not allow the car to be started for 10 minutes sometimes longer. happens 5-6 times a month. *jb
Car act as if its going to start but cuts off. i have had to sit for 15 to 20 minutes for the car to start. the theft lock system light flashes on and off during this time once it stop the car seems to start after the flashing stops. this causes me to be late to places also to block gas pumps and things . *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the system theft light illuminated on the instrument panel. the light used to blink and the vehicle would have to be shut off for approximately 10 to 30 minutes. currently, the light constantly remained illuminated. the ignition, keys, and alternator were replaced; however, the failure has recurred. the current mileage was 86,000 and failure mileage was 79,000. updated 10-07-08 *bf the ignition lock cylinder was replaced. updated 10/09/08. *jb
Hazard and turn signal works intermittently, i found that a recall on my make of car was issued in 2003, parts no available till 2004, due to losing my home in hurricane ivan my mail was messed up for quite some time, i am having this problem and would like to know if it would be covered. we replaced bulbs and fuses but problem still there, i can tap or hold the hazard button and turn signals will work for a moment. this is a 2000 malibu with appr. 74,000 miles. all warranty work and oil changes has always been kept up, i would like to know if my car falls in the recall. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact took her vehicle to the dealer to have her hazard lights serviced due to a recall notice. after the hazard lights were serviced, they began to remain illuminated and would not shut off. the horn has also stopped working. the contact also stated that the turn signals would work intermittently. the current mileage was 77,894 and failure mileage was 68,000.
(1) car would not start on the first try on several occasions (2) car would not start & battery could not be jump-started - battery acid & corrosion were all over the positive post engine wire (3) had car towed to mechanic who replaced battery & installed separate connectors to the positive post wire(old battery not available). *nm
I have a 2000 chevy malibu. as many malibu owners my car has the same issues. blower fan doesn't work on setting 1 and 2, rear speakers don't work in cold weather, rear tail lights don't always work, weird braking issues in the cold, and air circulation button changes from closed to open automatically. these are just some electrical issues with the car and i think i found the root cause. the windshield rubber seal on my car was unattached from the window outside at the bottom on the passenger side. i found out because after a heavy rain a lot of water was showing on the floor of the passenger side. the water damages has been happening for years. i found water sitting in the plastic molding right under the blower fan. water corroding the electrical cables on the floor. water tracks over the computer board located under the glove box. i've informed chevrolet and ask for them to create a tsb but they denied my request.*jb
On the way to the hospital the car died 21 times. it was acting like it was running out of gas. had a full tank. we would sit for a time (5, 10, 15 or so minutes) and the car would start and run 10 feet or a few miles. on the way home from the hospital it died another 15 times and we called a tow truck. we have replaced the map sensor & fuel relay switch. with the tow and parts and labor we continue to get stranded. the garage tested the car and the computer gave no code. we are afraid to drive it any distance for fear of breaking down again. we just want it fixed. *jb
1. lower intake manifold gaskets leaking coolant. 2. horn is inoperative (2nd time). 3.hvac kicks off and recirc. will not hold its setting. (on-going for the last 2 years). *jb
Gm passlock (anti-theft) feature malfunctions while starting a warm engine. engine almost never fails to start when either the engine is hot or the engine is cold. recently, i have had to abandon a 2000 malibu on two occasions for failure to start after multiple "10 minute waits" and come back the next day to start the car. failure of the engine to start could result in injuries or death depending on the situation and location. consider an elderly person that has to abandon their vehicle on the side of a rural road at night and have to walk a long distance in extremely cold weather. *jb
My turn signal, hazard lights work periodically had them looked at and worked on and still have problems. *tr
On july 7, 2005 i purchased a 2000 chevy malibu ls. the right two brake lights continue to burn out. never at the same time, it's either the one on the outside or the inner one.*jb
I have a 2000 chevy malibu ls in which the anti theft system does not allow me to operate my car properly. i will try to start my car and go somewhere and it wont start for ten to fifteen minutes. i live inwi where it can get very hot and extremely cold. i also have a child under the age of two who is with me in my vehicle on a regular basis. i have called gm and complained about this issue and i am told that they cant do anything because this is not a safety issue. this is a safety issue. if it is below freezing out side and i have my baby in the car with me and have to wait for ten of fifteen mins for it to hopefully start my child or i could get very sick. not to mention sitting in a hot car for that time waiting for the fake light to go off so that i can start it with they key that is supposed to go with the car but yet the car thinks im trying to steal it. and another one if im traveling and stop to get gas at night and i have to pay at the pump and turn the car off, cuz that's what your supposed to do while fueling, then it doesn't want to start again im stranded at an unopened gas station who knows where with my young child and myself at night in the freezing cold or very hot temps. why again is this not a safety issue? this problem needs to be fixed. and we should not have to pay for it to be done either. 400 to 800 to try to fix a problem that gm should recall. and it isn't even guaranteed to not happen again. why is it that gm wont recall this issue that i have seen tons and tons of complaints about? is it because gm doesn't know a solution to this problem? well gm u better figure one out or u will most likely be loosing a lot of customers. i certainly wont buy another gm car if they wont take responsibility for the issues that they are having with these cars now. gm should stand by their product and fix the issues that consumers are having with their cars. this is definitely a safety ...
My car will not start when the theft security light comes on. this is dangerous since i am a single parent and become stranded with my children inside the car with me or have to pick my children up and they have to wait alone outside because i am so late. today, my car has not started for over one hour. it is still sitting in the parking lot unable to start because of the security theft system. i wish this would be recalled, and hope that people don't have to start dying for it to be recalled. looking online about this problem, i have noticed that there are thousands of complaints filed on forums. i believe that if everyone knew the proper channel to complain to, that this problem would no longer exist. my abs light comes on everyday. i have had the sensor leads changed twice and it still comes on. my air conditioning was fine until this summer when i needed it. are these cars now designed to break down and be unreliable just so that the dealers can charge money for diagnostics and mechanical repair? i am so frustrated and hope that you can see how dangerous this can be. i bought this car because i wanted a reliable, dependable vehicle for myself and children, what will it take to recall this problem? will i receive acknowledgement of receipt of this complaint. i thank you in advance for your time and consideration to this very urgent matter. there was a recall on the hazard switch because it didn't always work, it didn't always allow for the turn signals to work either. i doubt that there were any deaths from this problem, and it was recalled. does someone have to die in an accident as a result of a problem with a vehicle before it will be recalled. please send me any additional information you may have about who to file additional complaints with so that i can direct my concerns to other state or federal agencies as well. *jb
Luckily i have not had any accidents with my 2000 chevy malibu. one of the most common problems with this make and model of vehicle is that the ignition lock cylinder and ignition lock switch malfunctions. this causes the car to not want to start, and while driving, the car will stop in the middle of the road. i personally have been stranded in the middle of intersections because of this problem. this is very unsafe, and very expensive to fix. i took my car into the chevy dealer to have it looked at, and it cost me $553.55 to fix this one problem, and now my lights do not want to work. *nm
My anti theft device goes on every time i try to start the car. i have to wait 10 minutes before i can start the car. was doing it once and a while and now it does it every time. *jb
I have already filed complaint in regards to the hazard light recall, which for some reason does not cover my 2000 malibu. i noticed other complaints on the malibu and figured i would throw my two cents in. i to have had to drop over $1000 dollars into the most defective car i have purchased this includes the $200 piece of junks i bought when i was a teenager. my list of problems. 1. coolant system leak cost $700 note: mechanic laughed and said this happens all the time is this type of engine. in reviewing other complaints, the one really stands out. nice i am glad gm owns up to its problems. 2. brakes constantly need to be replaced well below mileage. glad gm saved a few bucks under sizing the rotors. 3. within a year the fans switch (levels 1,2) and lighter stopped working. boy gm is saving lots money now. 4. within the past year i had fuel pump failure, nothing like traveling in rush hour traffic doing 75mph and car totally dieing. boy gm has made one quality car. 5. the last insult, my first and likely last gm product is when i thought boy i finally get something from gm in regards to one small defect, the hazard switch, i find out that my vehicle is not covered by this recall. wow not only i am out at least $1000 bucks on piece of crap product, gm does not even want to give a bone to hungry man. with this type of product it is no wonder gm is losing market share faster than any other automotive company. keep up the good work gm. clearly the are some serious defects with this vehicle and the gms ownership with defects.
why for a second time have i had to have my car into get fixed for the anti theft device turning on when nothing was done to set it. now i have to drive 4 hours round trip to have the dealer look at this problem. the first time it happen we where able to fix it with the manual. second time did not work????????
Intermittent failure for car to start. have to play with key to start. diagnosis was ignition switch. new orleans dealership advised that this is a frequent problem in malibus. *nm
Had trouble starting car. replaced battery, alternator and belt. same thing happened; car would turn over, but not fire. automobile repaired, replaced battery; next day, car would not start again. would start with a jump, but when i stop, it dies. *ak 3 occurences; same problem. i've used aaa 3 times for same item. i only have 1 more service call left!!! also, interior lights don't work all the time. brake noise on right side.
2000 chevrolet malibu: turn signals stop without warning. air condition stops and starts on its on. brakes squeal. engine surges. uses oi, l but no leak. uses alot of coolant no leak found by me. ignition switch locks and wont let go sometimes.*ak
Dt: the consumer states that the 2000 chevrolet malibu's signal and hazard lights malfunctioned. the lights sometimes work and sometimes they do not. this has been happening for about six months. the consumer took the vehicle to dealer once to have it checked. the consumer said that he looked at it himself. the consumer has not contacted general motors. the consumer said that the battery pole had a short life. the consumer replaced the battery pole himself. the consumer indicated that there was a delay in the signals coming on.*ak
The key to my 2000 malibu will not turn. it started "acting up"only when the car had been running for a while. it know has gotten to the point of everytime the car is turned on. the key is also able to be removed while the car is on. i am in the process to try to replace it, however i can not buy just the cylander i was told i need to replace the whole switch. i have two small children and need to have a car start, and can not "play" with the key for 5 to 10 minutes until it will turn. while i was talking to the dealership, he commented that there have been several people complaining about the key not turning.*ak
While parked in the garage to have a water pump installed mechanic tried to start the vehicle and the key would not start it. vehicle was towed to home since the weather was bad. a lock smith came and the entire dashboard and other components had to be replaced.*ak
Consumer stated that the light signals on vehicle did not work. she had a mechanic check the vehicle and determined that the switch in the steering column was defective. consumer claimed that there was a recall on the light signals.*ak
Car cut off while driving and sometime would not start. problem: under the hood fuse box no good.*ak
We unfortunately own a 2000 chevy malibu. we have already replaced the rotors several times for going out of round. we have also replaced the fuel pump at less then 50,000 miles at the cost of $728.00. the air conditioner pops on and off on its own not cooling for the most part. the turn signals are nonfunctional and our vin number is not included in the recall although it should be. then there is the transmission slipping and the coolant leaking and the car overheating we are told this is a manifold intake gasket and will cost around 800.00 to fix. the newest problem is the factory installed radio tuner is burned out and now we have to replace the radio costing yet another $100.00 dollars or so this car has nickel and dimed us too much. after looking over your site i found these to be numerous complaints on the same year and model. i feel this car was a lemon across the board not just ours but, all 2000 malibu's. please look into these cars on a whole they were very badly manufactured and we all deserve some compensation for it. *jb
Horn inoperative, accident nearly occurred. took vehicle to dealer twice dealer denied failure occurred. horn now is inoperative. *ak
1st issue: vehicle horn not working at steering column. replaced fuses under hood and still does not work. horn does work when vehicle's panic alarm is sounded and when remote locks are activated. will attempting to get vehicle fixed but concerned about previous recalls for electrical problems with this vehicle. 2nd issue: this vehicle is equipped with an automatic headlights on/ off sensor. this sensor appears to have failed from the first few months i have owned this vehicle. daytime running lamps never activate. the nighttime headlamps are always on when ignition is on.*ak
Dt: ninety percent of the time the vehicle hazard lights didn't work and made noise. it was later determined that a solder had cracked and shorted out. other vehicle's were recalled (recall# 03v327000) but the consumer's vehicle was not included . *nm
Positive post of ac delco battery in a 2000 chevy malibu failed, resulting in total power loss to vehicle. research has shown that this is a common problem. dealer parts person stated that they see this failure often due to battery having a defective seal on the pos. post. excessive acid leakage resulted from this failure. *nm
Electronic computer module malfunctioning. chevy malibu 2000 is only four years old. this problem should not be happening. when starting the car all of the warning lights come on, fuel gage does not work , speedometer does not work, no heat or air conditioning blows, windows will not roll down, eventually all lights pop off except the check engine light and everything begins to work... windows, temperature, speedometer, fuel gage, etc...
