The problems that i have had with this vehicle are all too similar to the problems others on here are having especially with the theft security system not letting the car start if the security light starts to blinking after fail attempt to start the vehicle , does someone have to get hurt or killed before you all correct this problem. i have also had to replace the wheel hub assembly on this vehicle more times than normal in a short time frame. i feel that this shouldn't be our problem to pay for if it is gm [xxx] up. i am mad and pissed to say the least. all of these complaints and no reactions. sad not living up to standards . when obama was bailing your [xxx]out he should of let you just stay [xxx]out. i am disgraced by this outrage. ill never buy a heavy chevy again. toyota here i come. at least yall honor recalls. :( late for work ,late taking kids to school ,late for dr appt. ,tickets for obstructing traffic. by the way gm great theft security system fail it seems like the only feature that's getting you a lot of publicity. not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Pertaining to general motors product recall #03043a dated march 2004. this recall addresses a problem that exists in the 2000 chevrolet malibu vehicles, these vehicles have a condition in which solder joints in the hazard warning flasher switch may crack. if cracking occurs, it may cause the audibled flasher indicator, visual flasher indicator in the instrument cluster, turn signals, and the hazard warning flashers to work intermittently of not at all. if the turn signals or hazard warning flashers are not working, others may react more slowly to a turning or stopped vehicle and a crash could occur. in my case the turn signals and warning flasher were working intermittently. but, the vin on my 2000 malibu does not fall into the stated vin range my compliant is: if this condition is important enough to warrant a recall, why does it only apply to 2000 chevrolet malibu?s within a certain vin range? why does it not apply to all 2000 chevrolet malibu?s that have the identical problem? i have had this condition repaired 3 times within the last 4 months. i am on a limited income and i cannot afford a recurring repair that costs hundreds of dollars. to date i have spent over $1,000.00 on this same repair. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *tt

After driving for a few minutes, suddenly without warning, the turn signals stopped working, so i stuck my arm out the window to try to compensate for the lack, i tried to use emergency flashers and they did not work either. every day that i drive, the turn signals work for about 15 minutes then stop (even the emergency flashers stop working). i contacted the chevy recall # 800-630-2438 and spoke to daniel who told me that the recalls are vin specific and that my car was not included in those vin #'s and that i have to pay to have it fixed. *tr

Driving from queens to brooklyn, ny and suddenly without warning, the turn signals stopped working, so i stuck my arm out the window to try to compensate for the lack. every day that i drive, the turn signals work for about 15 minutes then stop (even the emergency flashers stop working). i've taken the car to mechanics who are as stumped as i was (until today) when i saw the nhtsa.dot recall and investigation list which included my car 2000 chevy impala. *tr

Turn signals have not been working upon demand. as of 9/82010 my turn signals have stopped working all together. gm said my vin did not fall in the recall category of the same vehicles with the same problem. *tr

I own a 2000 chevy malibu and the theft deterrent system is not working properly. a lot of the time the car will not start and while you are driving the call will stall and die. it will shut off and random times. you can be driving down the highway at 65 miles an hour and you loose power. this is a very dangerous situation and i know that gm knows about this problem and has failed to come up with a fix for it. it is up to you to force gm to put out a fix for this and protect the consumers of their products. please help keep me and my family safe. thank you. *tr

Turn signals inoperable. flasher inoperable. this makes it impossible to alert other drivers of intent to turn or change lanes causing a dangerous situation. i was told there has already been a recall by the chevrolet representative. the recall was for the turn signals and hazard switch and both have been replaced by a previous owner at 70000 mi. under the previous recall. i am now having the same problem at 172000 mi. and was told it is now not their responsibility. *tr

I have a 2000 chevy malibu. it has something called the passlock system or theft system and it prevents the car from starting. it prevents the car from starting all the time. this isn't the first time you have received this complaint i bet. i have put an extra $2000 into the car after i brought it hoping it would fix it but i still have the problem. i have read on-line and everyone who owns a 96 and up gm car has this problem. everyone says gm doesn't care about this problem and they won't fix it. they say this is the only way to get them to fix it. if we complain on here. please make them fix this problem with their cars because you would save over 1,000,000 people time and frustration. no joke, literally 1,000,000 people have this problem. this is why they went bankrupt. gm sucks. this is why america sucks as a nation. we have to complain on here to fix our problems. no offense to you. i don't have enough money to by another car, as most people with this problem. please do the right thing and make gm fix it. i know it is not the american way to give the people what they want but maybe this time we can make an exception. please help all of us who would love to buy a different car but don't have the money. thank you. *ln

Tl- the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated the ignition switch works intermittingly. the contact was told to turn the key and let it sit for 15 minutes and then try to start the vehicle. this has worked, but the contact feels this is a safety issue. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage and current mileages was 136818

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the engine stalled intermittently. the failure occurred on twelve occasions. the dealer stated that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000. updated 01/28/15*lj air conditioner and heater wouldnot come on. updated 08/28/2017*ct

2000 chevy malibu, periodically doesn't start - was told it was a passlock problem. since february have had various businesses replace fuel pump, pass lock sensor, fuel filter, starter and crankshaft sensor to try and fix this problem. none of these have worked and this problem still exists today. no one knows what else to try. if i can't start the car, i have to turn the key to the off position (not the lock position) and leave it for 10 minutes then the car will start. unbelievable. i am 79 years old and this is no way to live with an otherwise perfectly good automobile. still not fixed and no knowledge of what to do now. car only has 32000 miles and is in excellent condition and it will be very difficult to sell if it won't start. *tr

The car was running fine, then about a week ago the turn signals stopped working. this is also effecting my hazard lights. it happens intermittently. this is occurring daily. *cn

Passlock system 2000 chevrolet malibu will not let car start, and sometimes causes engine to go dead while driving, which leaves driver unable to steer car (power steering). passlock sensor was changed a year ago at chevrolet dealership ($750) now its doing same thing again.*tr

The blinkers of my 2000 chevy malibu turn off randomly and i don't know it until i go to make a turn which can absolutely result in a crash. it also affects my passenger side window and rear passenger brakelights which will not come on though the bulbs are new. i looked into recalls and there was indeed a recall regarding this exact problem stating the hazard light switch overheats and melts and then disrupts the electrical system specifically affecting this part of my car. when i called the manufacturer they told me that i was five days late to have the part fixed. being that i only bought this car in march of this year, 2009, i should have received a recall notice so that this could have been fixed, but received no such information in the mail and am unable to afford to fix this very dangerous problem. also, when i go to start my car, it will randomly turn on the theft system light and not allow the car to start. on investigation apparently, the chevy malibu comes with the passkey system and despite that the company knows that it is faulty they will do nothing to fix it. though it is their fault they just told me to replace the key cylinder which is not definite to work, or to spray graphite powder in it to help with connection but that overall it is my problem. why is it that i have a car that was bought in running condition that will kill itself randomly and that is my problem when it is a manufacturers defect!? i can never know when or when not my car will start and have missed work and other important events. and in case of an emergency there is a possibility that it will not start! or that i could be trapped in a dangerous situation because my car simply decides that the key that is supposed to start it and is linked to it will not work. this is truly unacceptable and not right for chevy to think that we should just deal with a car that is broken though not the consumers fault and all of the options they give for fixing it are not definite. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. while driving 30 mph, the contact drove over a pothole and the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the ignition switch assembly needed to be repaired. the vehicle was repaired. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). the contact believed that the remedy specified in the recall was not effective to properly repair the failure. the failure mileage was 133,327. updated 11/13/14*lj the consumer stated the manufacturer would not provide reimbursement for the repairs. the consumer was advised to return to the dealer for additional repairs under recall. updated 7/28/2015 *js

2000 chevy malibu anti theft would keep car from starting for no reason. i could follow the gm's fix for this by waiting 10 minutes and than the car would start. we have dealt with this problem for a couple of years and the dealer has told us they can find nothing wrong.it has progressed to where you now are able to start the car but it will shut the engine off within a minute. this has happened 4 times in the last 2 days. this happened once to my wife when she was driving on the road the engine just shut off creating the possibility of an accident. *tr

Theft system light comes on and car will not start for ten minutes. happens twice a week. *tr

My 2000 chevy malibu at least once a week or more will not start and the anti-theft system light comes on. after waiting 10 minutes for the light to go off, it will usually start the second time around. this has been going on for a year, but recently the car wouldn't start after numerous 10-minute delays. after paying out $94 for labor i was told it couldn't be fixed and to look for a recall. i have found no recall but many, many people with the same problem. i am a single woman and i have been sitting in far too many parking lots, all times of day and night waiting for my car to realize that it is not being stolen by me, the one with the key. i have no expertise in this matter and cannot afford to pay out labor charges only to be told that there's no way to fix it. i continue to drive it this way never knowing when i'll be stuck for 10 minutes or much longer as happened recently. since i feel i need a car that will start much more than i need an anti-theft system why can't this thing just be completely disabled so i don't live in constant fear? *tr

2000 chevrolet malibu ls was driven to work. shut the car off and went insided the building. came out and car would not restart due to the theft system light flashing. had to wait at least ten minutes for the car to start. the consequences is that the car if leaving people stranded. *tr

Father was in late 80's or early 90's (died at 97 in 2013). chevy malibu with on dash ignition switch was still stopping while on its third ignition switch, the repair covered free by gm. i drove the car to try to figure it out the ignition and hence power steering ( headlights still on) shut off when going over the grand trunk railroad crossing. the problem diagnosed was that the ignition switch would turn slightly to the left (1/8 inch) or even turn fully off depending on the momentum of dad's large key chain hanging from the ignition key. it was a dangerous situation since the power steering quit and the power brakes don't work when the engine shuts off. according to a locksmith, the detents on these switches were very poorly manufactured. solution was to limit the number of keys on the key chain. *tr

The pass lock or theft system on my 2000 chevy malibu. it is been an ongoing problem. every three starts i have to wait 10 minutes to start my car. this is a stupid feature, and gm should discontinue it. i have not yet fixed the problem, but was estimated $500 plus parts to fix. *tr

2000 chevy malibu with passlock lock problems ..what a nightmare someone needs to do something about this.. *tr

My malibu is not listed on the recall list, but i have had problems with the ignition for the past five years. 90 percent of the time when it won't start the indicator lights shows the anti theft light. you can sit there for at least 10 minutes and the car will then start. if you try it in less than 10 minutes it messes up again and you have to start the 10 minutes again. we have taken it to the mechanic numerous times and they have tried numerous things to get this to correct itself. they thought it was in the key and we have gotten new keys from the dealer and that didn't work. in the past 6 months, the car has started just cutting off while driving. luckily it has been while still in the neighborhood and no one has gotten hurt. we then pushed the car to the side of the road, wait the 10 minutes and restart the car. this is the same thing that the gm recall is for other vehicles. please include my car in the recall and fix this problem before someone gets killed. *tr

Theft system/passlock. daily this is triggered preventing me from starting my vehicle for ten minutes. i have a highly special needs child and it's critical that my vehicle gets me to him or takes him where he needs to go. i've always been late for work several times, and most recently today i left work early from being sick and rendered unable to start the car, twice. i don't need the theft system, i can't afford a 'possible' fix and from everyone i've spoken to- nothing has worked to fix their issues. i think this should be recalled to have this fixed, taken out (if there's a way) or give us a trade in! my car is paid for, i can't afford to go get a new one! *tr

The passlock system keeps messing up, my light flashes and the i have to what 10 min. to start it. sometimes the light stays on. this happens about a dozen times a week. i am left stranded in a dark parking lot at 10pm after school. i am a afraid of being out alone at night as it is but now i am stranded out for 10 mins. *tr

I have 2000 chevy malibu with 108,000 miles . purchased it with about 78,000 miles on it. when purchased i started having problems with ignition getting stuck and not turning so i replaced it. ran fine for a little while and then wouldn't start one day. was told that it wasn't getting fuel so i replaced the fuel pump. ran fine for a little while then won't start again. so this time i take to mechanic. he said that my that i may need to replace my starter..so ok i did hoping it would fix this problem. again it happens..i notice the theft system light is on and won't go off. i take back to mechanic and they hookup to computer and get a code that says my passlock system has error and i need to take to dealership so they can take off. i took to dealership and they said i was missing some turntables in my ignition so they added a few more and sent me on my way saying that should fix problem. next day won't start again!!! i have to turn key to acc and leave on for 10 minutes..turn key off when light finally go away and then it will start. having been left stranded over 100 times with a 2 year old i may add in 20 degree weather and also in 90 degree weather..its really scary! unreliable and quite frankly very unsafe!!! *tr

Theft system light blinks can't start car. if i wait 10 15 minutes it will stop blinking and it will start. i have been late for work two time in the last 2 weeks. *tr

I own a 2000 chevy malibu that has a passlock (theft system) that will set off at odd times and not start my car for 10min or longer depending on the day!!! i called a dealership today to find out how much repair would be for this problem and was told it would be between $400-$800. i have owned my car for almost 3 years and have been having this problem with it since i drove it off the lot, but in the last week it has gotten worse. *tr

Every 50 or so attempts at starting my 2000 malibu the car won't start unless i leave the ignition set to "on" for 10 minutes. i have been unable to repair the problem so far. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the anti-theft sensor was illuminating intermittently. in addition, the contact was not able to get the key to turn from an off position to an on position. on some occasions, the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the contact stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 12v224000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 112,000.

Theft deterrent system in my 2000 chevrolet malibu sometimes (too often!) will erroneously prevent me from starting my car. i'm using the original gm keys - not copies!! extremely inconvenient - you have to wait 10 minutes before you can try again - and potentially unsafe. *tr

2000 chevy malibu -- theft alert light is always on. car would not start. wait 10 min to reset -car would then start--gmc solution need a new ignition switch and key-- i get it done-- light is still on--the auto will not start sometimes --10 min reset it will start--- do i get another ignition set 1 yr. later??? i can not trust this auto to start ------------------i have spoken to 4 other 2000 2001 chevy malibu owners and they are going thru the same problems please look into this recurring problem ---- ____--during this problem we all have a build up of corrosion on the positive pole of the battery. please respond [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the turn signals on the vehicle became inoperable. the manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 03v327000 (exterior lighting:hazard flashing warning lights:switch). the contact would have to pay for a diagnostic test to be performed on the vehicle. the failure mileage was 65,000 and current mileage was 75,000.

2000 chevrolet malibu , bought the car in 2005. the anti-theft light comes on and car won't crank, or a few minutes down the road if it does crank it stalls looses all power ,and then won't crank for about 30 minutes later if not i might have to beat with my hand on the dash just under the ignition switch for all power to regain its self. this problem started back in 2008, but my husband got it doing right again after about a month of tapping the computer part of the switch from the inside of the dash with a screw driver handle every time he went to crank it. it did fine up until recently , about somewhere in february of 2011, it started doing it again, dealership can seem to tell me nothing, they have no idea even after running it on a computer over night, all because the computer they said can't find anything, how dumb. i am poor, can't afford another car. i love my malibu apart from what it is doing to me, i have 2 kids, small kids, they are with me 24/7 and the car will just die on me leaving me to use all ,y strength and power to steer and stop the car on to the side of the road. to top it off my air isn't working anymore, and being stuck like that in the heat from this state of alabama, is not fun or healthy for my 2 kids or me. i just want it to work like it is supposed to . i can't afford to pay over 300 dollars for a switch and i don't even know if that is the problem, my car surges, and no one can seem to tell me a straight answer , but what i do know is i am not the only one with this problem. and someone needs to fix it now.before something bad happens, what if it dies on me like that and it will at high speeds ,and someone not paying attention runs me and my 2 kids over. please i am begging you, i don't want a new car, i just want my problem that seems to be very common fixed. *tr
