Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2000 Chevrolet Impala

The vehicle accelerated by itself as i was turning into a parking space, the engine revving so loudly a person stopped and observed the collision as the impala crashed into a parked vehicle directly in front of it on the other side. nothing would stop the acceleration except manually forcing the car into park. *tr

I have a 2000 impala that has the rear strut towers beginning to rust out badly. there has been no incident yet as i caught this on one of my vehicles inspections. if this were to rust completely out the rear tires could come off of the car while in motion. i have tried to contact general motors, but got no response. this defect renders to car pretty much useless. thanks for you time. *tr

As i was driving home from work i accidentally went through a red light and t-boned the other car. although no one was hurt, there was extensive damage to both cars. my concern is the airbags never went off. i have always thought this was strange. now that i'm hearing about the impala recall due to faulty airbags it raises more concerns, because now this is my sons car. my understanding is the 2000 impala's are not part of the recall but maybe they should be. there is absolutely no reason those airbags should not have deployed. now i'm am concerned if my son is ever in an accident he will not have the airbags as a safety net. should the 2000 impala's be part of the recall also? *tr

Our 2000 chevrolet impala was left in an apartment behind my children's' apartment in omaha, nebraska. when they returned from christmas break, the battery was down and it was cold outside. they tried to jump start the car using jumper cables from another vehicle next to it. my daughter was in front of the car to remove the jumper cables after it started. when my son tried to crank the engine, it exploded all over the parking lot, showering my daughter with bits and pieces of the plastic top of the engine. my daughter was shaken up but not hospitalized and her confidence in starting gm autos is "gone." gm claims that they are not responsible because there is 120,000 miles on the vehicle at the time of the explosion and will not provide any safety advice on starting the vehicle in the future. they also contend that the children were responsible for blowing up the car by starting it with jumper cables, although the dealer acknowledges that it was started in accordance with the owners manual. there seem to be unresolved safety issues here that gm does not want to acknowledge or admit to. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated there was a knocking noise while driving at speeds of 5 to 8 mph with initial acceleration or attempting turns. the vehicle was seen by an independent repair shop. the mechanic determined the frame was cracked and needed to be repaired. updated 05/04/06. *jb

Dealership on 08/13/2001 replaced the cradle. vehicle was under warranty in november 2001, and dealer replaced shaft. cradle failed 2 years later, and needed to be replaced again, also, had a steering problem.*ak

I was driving down the street and my engine fell out of my 2000 chevy impala. my engine cradle mounts were not in good enough due to gm negligence. they wont back it up even though their pamphlets say different. safety issue and they don't care. a lot of other complaints about the same thing. this vehicle should have been recalled along time ago. *la

Steering colum in my car has a clunk/vibratoin. the engine cradle was replaced and i was told that this was the problem , but later the noise returned after the 36000 warranty was over. now dealer tells me that my extended warranty that i paid for would not cover the repair.also the car is having tranmission problems, still waiting to see if they can find the problem.... have been told that if no check engine light comes on then there is nothing wrong. i am going to leave with the dealer and have the service mgr drive, but not a lot of hope in this.*ak

A/c emits foul odors (mold/mildew). brakes pulsate, warning & abs lights come on. check engine lights come on, stalled once, uncontrolled acceleration from start up twice. steering: intermediate shaft replaced at 42,618 miles; rack & pinion leaking at 65,307 popping & muffled explosion sound in cold weather start ups, paint peeled off front & bumper of car. weather stripping adhesive liquifies on door posts in hot weather. airbag warning light comes on

When making turns there is a cracking and popping sound coming from under the hood. dealer determined engine cradle needs to be replaced a second time. however, chevrolet stated there was nothing that could be done at this time, they were working on a solution.*ak

Vehicle would make a clicking noise whenever a turn was made. vehicle was taken to dealer, and informed consumer that the subframe was broken. repairs made by dealer. feel free to provide any further details on this matter.*ak

The problem that happened after this subframe assembly was bent is the safety issue i am concerned with. when this assembly gets bent it smashes the power steering lines in the frame which in turn causes the power steering hoses to reach a high enough pressure to explode and you loose your power steering. what i am concerned with is someone traveling down a highway at say 70 mph and hitting a pot hole and this sub frame failing and at this time losing your power steering.*ak

Engine cradle is out of position, causing tires to become misaligned. dealer has been contacted, but refuses to repair under warranty. please provide further details.*ak

Front of vehicle was rattling when making turns at slow speed. dealer replaced engine cradle. in august of 2001 rattling returned. dealer replaced steering upper shaft.*ak

Engine cradle/undercarriage defective/ this adversly affects power steering. engine has shut off on 4 different occasions over two months span. dealer can't replicate stall and therefore cant fix. i am too afraid to drive this car. i will not drive until problem is fixed. each stall has occurred in hot weather and on highway and in heavy traffic. extremely dangerous.*ak

A fuel smell coming from underneath hood at start up and shut down of vehicle. please provide any additional information. *ak

Clicking noise in front end at 3000 miles ended up replacing the frame on new car. *ak

Front brakes rotor problem, replaced sever times, rotors are warped or have excessive run out, can not find the cause. resulting in vehicle vibration when the brakes are applied. replaced front disc rotors several times.

Trunk unlocks but fails to automatically lift up! does not even open up a fraction of an inch!. *ak

The intermediate steering shaft assembly appears to be defective on a number of 2000 model year impalas. no tsb or recall from gm as of yet. aluminum engine cradle still a big safety concern in these vehicles.*ak

I have got the third steering column, third set of tires and a new cradle. the problem started at 4437 miles and has continued yet @ 37204 miles. have been to many dealers, contacted gm and now have a better business bureau complaint filed. the dealers told me it was the tires and the tire dealers told me it was the car. in 4000 miles my tires went from 9/32" to 3/32" wear. the "klunk" in the front end is still there. the vehicle likes to "wander" down the road with vibrations felt in the steering wheel. the service manager took it on many test drives and contacted the regional manager=who said "not another dime in this car". i was escorted to the sales department and introduced to a salesman for purposes of trading the vehicle in. the offer was less than nada trade value. i have contacted gm's assistance line many times and just got the "run around" with operators documenting conversation and no one would let me talk to a "real" supervisor. all i wanted to do was ask for a fair solution to the problems that the dealers and gm know that they have. my vehicle is now out of warranty with the same problems since i bought it. why = if gm states in their literature = they are committed to "customer satisfaction" = not responsive in a fair manner and i had to take this issue to all of these extremes????????????? also at issue = is the fact that gm penalizes dealers (with bad customer surveys) due to the manufacturers engineering problems. what happened to telling the "truth" and "customer satisfaction" in business????????? (tiresize: p225/60r16)

The front end missed a weld on the frame which came from the factory that way. *slc

No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak

Engine cradle mounts were wearing out, replaced twice already, currently need replacement again. *ak

No summary listed for abov evehicle. *ak

The aluminum subframe has two brackets that need to be welded according to chevrolet. the aluminum subframe "flexes" causing a clicking sound when the steering wheel is turned to the left and the right. chevrolet advised the dealer to weld the two brackets and that should quiet the noise. chevrolet said that there are no safety bulletins on this issue. *ak

The car makes a popping (in the structure) sound upon stopping, starting and turning corners very load, annoying, and frequent. *ak

Design of rear spoiler obscures view out of rear window. nlm
