Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that vehicle has failed to start on numerous occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 177,289.

Pulling out of the dealership located on a busy street and the transmission wouldn't engage. it was just surging and i almost caused a major accident. reading all of the complaints regarding this same problem really disturbs me. my son in law works for gm. i only own chevys but to think that you would allow this obvious problem to go on putting many peoples lives at risk makes me rethink my decision. i demand that this be investigated before someone gets killed. *tr updated 2/10/2016 *js

Follow-up on complaint# 10650094. i have researched this problem, and tried to get assistance from gm with no results other that the run-around. i have explained that the recall of this vehicle and repair that is suggested is not the issue. the ignition is a 2 part switch and the mechanical part of the switch is only part of the problem. the issue in my case is that the electrical part of the switch is what controls the power, brakes, airbag, and all other functions. you need to look at the entire switch assembly. the electrical part is what failed. *tr

Transmission overdrive shaft spline is stripped preventing the overdrive from being used. i bought this car from a neighbor just now, but this transmission problem occurred at least 2 years ago with approximately 110,000 miles on it. i just had the exact transmission issue confirmed now. *tr

When my 2000 chevy impala gets too hot the transmission begins to stick, and the vehicle slows down, and then transmission shift very pulls hard. it occurs mostly as the weather starts to get warm. *tr

2000 chevrolet impala. consumer states problem with transmission and requests reimbursement*tgw the consumer stated as he backed the vehicle in his garage, a loud bang came from the rear of the vehicle. the consumer removed the gear from reverse to drive and then the vehicle began to vibrate. he shifted the gear into park and in an instant the vehicle moved forward. he attempted to shift into neutral, to stop the forward movement, but to no avail. to stop the forward movement, he applied heavy pressure to the brake pedal and eased into drive; the vehicle eased down the driveway. he was able to get the vehicle to stop at the end of the driveway. he tried shifting into reverse, but instantly a loud noise was heard. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop where it was determined the transmission had failed due to torn gears. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. while driving the transmission kept slipping in and out of gear. also the electronic stability control system caused the vehicle to drift to the right or left. also, the lights for the instrument control panel failed. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic and the technician located several diagnostic error codes. the failure mileage was 173,009. updated 1/5/10 *cn the dealer replaced a sash light switch, ut that didn't resolve the problem. updated 01/06/10.*jb

Vehicle was at dealer for left axle seal leak. next day vibration noticed while slight right turn pressure on wheel. returned vehicle to dealer. couldn't find problem on lot. after testing on road for 2 mins. it was determined that transmission had total failure. *tr

Total transmission failure on 2000 chevrole t impala. *ak

Transmission failure. vehicle making gear whining, and transmission slips at highway speed. service shop indicated that there is a "solenoid switch" that is stuck in the torque converter. there is a 50/50 chance that the drum in the torque converter is cracked, therefore shop won't invest the large amount of labor required to replace this stuck switch. the repair will require a complete transmission rebuild. 120,000 miles on vehicle. $1500 of repairs for a stuck, $20 switch. not right.*jb

Dt*: the contact stated the check engine light illuminated intermittently. while accelerating from a stop, the transmission dropped to the lowest gear without warning, and hesitated before engaging to the next gear. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the problem. also, the fuel gauge displayed an incorrect reading. finally, while driving 30 mph, there was a rattling noise in rear wheels. the last two problems were inspected by a dealer.

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling between 15 and 55mph the vehicle will shift hard. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the transmission was flushed out. the problem was with the pressure control solenoid in the transmission. the manufacturer has been alerted.

The vehicle had 37,000 on it and the transmission failed. however, it will start but has no power. the vehicle sounded as if it was in a very low gear. consumer stated that the vehicle would not go into reverse. the consumer took the vehicle into the repair shop. please provide any further information. *jb

Car started making a whining noise while in motion. dealer service department diagnoses was the trans axle needs overhaul. vehicle only has 33000 miles, much too soon for a trans axle failure, contacted gm, was told to let dealer rebuild trans axle, and if defective parts are found, gm may pay some of the cost.*ak

I have had numerous problems from day one with this car. at 60,000 miles, i had a transmission failure. there was a whining noise that came from the engine compartment, usually at highway speeds in 4th gear, or overdrive. i had the car diagnosed at a transmissioin shop, and was told that it was going to need to be completely rebuilt. this failure could have occurred on the highway, if i had not been vigilant in my investigation of the problem. as a result, i had a huge repair bill, was without the car for 1 week, and had to pay for a rental to drive to work. to correct the problem the transmission and torque converter had to be rebuilt, and repalced. specific parts that i know of were, the "torrington bearing", which caused failure of a set of planetary gears, and the 4th gear spline. the repairman said that the bearing and the 4th gear spline are of substandard quality, and that replacement parts have purposely been made stronger, and heat treated, because this is a known problem in these transmissoins.60'000 miles is much too early for a failure of this type to occur. total repair bill was over $2,500.00.*ak

Periodic transmission slip from initial date of purchase - dealer could not duplicate when taken in for service, until out of warranty. reflash e-prom/update done at 75k miles to correct problem. now at 110k dealer says new transmission is needed as car is exhibiting same problems. car headlights go out when using high beams. car has lost all power twice when driving and completely shut off, thus causing a significant steering problem until the car could be stopped. grounding wires added to see if correction could be made. lights & car have not quit yet, but transmission continues to exhibit shifting problems with check engine light coming on. when car is shut off the engine light will go out and not come back on and the car will reset it self and run okay for awhile. the car also exhibits a loud whining noise when the slippage / jerking is about to occur. gm will not allow conversation with anyone but a customer service person. all file numbers given to me by gm personnel when car was under warranty are not loaded into their data base, thus nothing can be done, mileage is too high and these things are expected to happen. *nm

My 2000 chevy impala has transmission problems that may result in me having to purchase another one. this car was shipped out with a 4t65-e tranny, which has more problems than the law should approve. in my current research i have found hundreds of recalls concerning the 4t65-e all in different gm vehicles. my impala's tranny is about to go, the symptoms are hard shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. i don't think it's fair that i was sold a car with a defective transmission. this problem should be corrected.*ak

Transmission failure of my 2000 impala with only 20,000 miles on it. it is the weekend and have not had a chance to call dealer to find out if they will cover damage. will write again later with more info. 3-21-2004. *jb

Transmission failure and power steering pump failure.*ak

While gradually accelerating from 42 to 43 mph the engine surges and then settles back down. dealer states they found codes that indicate a solenoid problem in the transmission. i only have 52,000 miles on the car. dealer also states that the transmission could change to any gear at any time or speed. *jb

While driving, the vehicle started to jerk. *jb

Consumer stated that when putting vehicle in park on a hill the vehicle would pop out of park and start to roll back in reverse, causing damage to the vehicle. dealer notified. *ak

Steering colum in my car has a clunk/vibratoin. the engine cradle was replaced and i was told that this was the problem , but later the noise returned after the 36000 warranty was over. now dealer tells me that my extended warranty that i paid for would not cover the repair.also the car is having tranmission problems, still waiting to see if they can find the problem.... have been told that if no check engine light comes on then there is nothing wrong. i am going to leave with the dealer and have the service mgr drive, but not a lot of hope in this.*ak

Consumer states that while driving at any speed and with no warning transmission will lock up, locking the rear tires, and it will be hard to control the vehicle. consumer will be forced to pull over. *ak

Why, after giving this car all the loving care necessary, every 3000 mi. check ups, and taking it in last week for service, the service writer suggested the transmission should be flushed out. so i said ok,and he said it was ok, now why two days later the tranny goes out to the tune of $3,000. now i have been a chevy owner for over 50 years and owned a fleet of vans for my business, in all that time i never lost a transmission this is very costly and to say the least i am unhappy. this chevy is about to turn into a ford. thank you, please respond.

The vehicle rolled backwards while on a hill. *jb

The shift lever failed and was replaced. *yd

The vehicle was taken to the dealer to have recall c01035-s performed and was told it would take 15 min, the consumer sat in the dealer for 1.75 hours before the work was complete, the consumer was led to believe that the recall repair was being performed, it wasnot until the consumer read the invoice that she realized that it was not done, the consumer contacted the dealer and was told the the necessary part for repair is not available. nlm

Repeat failure: warmed car parked one hour. enter car, start engine, back slowly from parking. put transmission in drive, depressed throttle moderately-balk/hesitated/"lean balk"-more throttle=worse, lasts 7 seconds, then comes to life.near accident pulling into traffic!*ak

When shifting to park indicator shows it was in park, but intermittently vehicle will roll a few inches in either direction. dealer stated there was a problem with park lock pin, has not been repaired at this time. if calling leave name and phone number only, no message!*ak consumer states vehicle rolls on foot in both directions and then rocks back and forth before stops. *yh

The engine imtermittently looses acceleration power on the highway and stalls out when making turns, the vehicle has been taken to the dealer on several occasion but the problem still exist. nlm

The engine stalls while driving and is hard to restart, it has been taken to the dealer twice. nlm

When vehicle encountered slight vibration is common highway roads surfaces, the vehicle will jump, jerk and wander from side to side, favoring the right side. the rear of the vehicle without warning will brake away and try and begin to spin first left and then right.. when road conditions are wet from mist or rain, the vehicle will constantly try to begin a right rear sliding action as if the rear of the vehicle is try to come to come around and get in front of you while in a forward motion. speeds at which this accurs is 45 to 70 miles an hour. loss of forward, directional control will accure, vehicle wanders back and forth. vehicle will fishtail on wet road conditions. very sever corner to corner tire wear. rear tires conpletely bald. constant tire rotation proves worthless. vehicle will pull to right front when brakes applied. front to rear alighnment problems. no specs available from dealership for alighnment. set rear camber, both sides by eye. an uncontroled highway spin resulted in sever vehicle damage. engine stalls at upon acceleration, slow speeds, street lights, stop sighns., etc. vehicle will roll forward while in a reverse action such as; backing out of a parking lot, drive way.,ect. purchase dealership refuses to scknowledge complaints of vehicle failures, facts, conditions. was told by general service manager that the problems and issues surrounding this vehicle and it's accident, " its a legal issue of libality, that we no longer can not and will not have anything further to do with you or this vehicle." was told by service technician that in regards to the facts or conddtions surrounding this vehicles problems causing the sever tire wear conditions that, " i was screwed"...*ak( dot number: 1089ms tire size: p255/60r16 )

While vehicle was parked on a slight incline it came out of park , when gear shift indicator was hit by an accident. there was no key in the ignition when this happened. dealer will be notified about the problem. the vehicle is owned by automotive rentals incorporated c/o bekaert corporation. please provide any further information. *ak

Vehicle rolls backward while on a small incline, and after moving foot off brake pedal. vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on three occasions, and problem still occurring. *ak

On any incline vehicle will roll back when taking foot off brake to throttle. consumer spoke to dealer who said that front wheel drive vehicles do that. consumer contacted manufacturer, and representative checked out the complaint, and stated that it seemed to be a common complaint. *ak *ml

The vehicle will freely roll backwards or forward when foot is removed from brake and the transmission is in a drive gear. even slight inclines will cause the vehicle to roll, but a steep incline can become a serious safety issue, since the car will freely roll, exactly the same way a vehicle with a manual transmission would roll when taken out of gear. unfortunately, drivers who use automatics expect the transmission to hold the vehicle, at least partially, when on an incline. it is typical to use one foot to move from the brake to the throttle, but on steep inclines, the vehicle will roll so quickly that using two feet is often necessary (one for brake, one for throttle) when moving off a stop. obvious safety issues are: vehicle rolling into someone, vehicle rolling into an object or another vehicle, unnecessary airbag deployment, and driver disorientation resulting from the equipment not working as expected, with possible resulting accident. dealer says this condition is considered normal, but i have driven many vehicles with automatic transmissions and have never had one respond in this manner, at least to this degree. this leads me to believe that there is actually a design defect, and at the very least, general motors should inform buyers that these vehicles respond differently than others. one reason why i purchased this vehicle is for its safety test results, but this problem makes me concerned that the vehicle is actually unsafe for my wife to drive under certain circumstances--she has already told me that she will not drive in downtown seattle (steep streets) with the vehicle. she is not a highly skilled driver, and operating the car on inclines without exercising extra caution, or using two feet (which requires additional skill) could easily cause an accident. additional comments for nhtsa: please please please give us a window longer than 70 characters to type in. please also increase the field size on the "summary"whenviewingcomplaintdatabase

Engine/trans partial failure, almost stalling in intersection. instrument cluster had system managment lighting in dash flashing for no reason. replacment of instrument cluster actually worsened uncommanded light flashing. initial repair of engine problems diminished severity of stalling, however did not completely correct the problem. unable to duplicate stalling on a consistant basis. *ak

Transmission line broke and poured fluid all over road, making the car lose power . the engine was revving but the transmission was not engaging.*ak

Dealer advised that when vehicle was built the center support bearing in the transmission was put in backwards causing the transmission to fail. i am very upset that all the dealer seems to want to do is replace the transmission. *ak

When vehicle is on an incline and in gear it will roll when the brakes are released, even without stepping on the accelerator. dealer has been contacted.*ak

After car had been driven several miles, then shut off for 45 to 60 minutes, upon starting and trying to get back on highway the engine would hesitate at about 5 mph car speed, for 2 or 3 seconds, with the accelerator pedal pushed trying to speed up, the engine would finally catch up to the gas pedal setting and spin the tires. this happened 4 times one day. four visits to the dealer didn't help. since one chevy dealer replaced a control on the transmission, the engine has hesitated going around a corner at 20 mph. three other times it hesitated when i tried to leave ny driveway.*ak

Car will drift backwards when auto transmission is in drive. could back into another car causing their air bag to deploy, or hit someone walking behind the car. dealer says that this is normal, i say it is not and it is a defect that should be fixed. *ak
