Problems with 2010 Chevrolet HHR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

About a year and a half ago my right tail light went out, replaced the bulb. about 9 months after that it went out again, replaced it. about 3 months after that it went out again, replaced it again. about a few months later it went out again, replaced it again. 3 weeks later it went out again, replaced it. one week later it went out again.... i have not replaced it yet because the last time my husband said that the light holder is melting. each time we replaced the bulb we bought the recommended bulb. *tr

Car stalls at any speed. sometimes starts right back up and other times will not for a while. my car died as i was getting on the freeway ramp in a construction zone at 45 mph and climbing. suddenly died and i had to star it back up. traffic was heavy and i almost got into a serious accident. died 7 times in less than 15 miles. no warning lights. oil good, fuel good, it just dies without notice.

Ignition stuck, car wont shut off , can't remove key. *tr

I have a 2010 chevy hhr and apparently an electrical issue. it started with my inside lights on my dashboard randomly blinking. then one headlamp went out, the next day after replacing the headlamp, my inside middle dome light went out. today my window would not roll back up. this is all within 3 weeks span. gotta be an electrical issue, right? what is my next step? no recall? *tr

We arrived at home and when to turn the ignition off and it would not turn off. we had to remove the fuel fuse and disconnect the battery in order for it to turn it off. the key is still in the ignition switch. *tr

on june 29, 2013, i put my key into the ignition, the key wouldn't go all the way into the ignition. the recalled ignition had been replaced at gmc buick, hilltop. when i called gmc buick, hilltop richmond ca, on june 29, 2013, and spoke to [xxx] at gmc buick, hilltop richmond ca, she stated it was probably a different problem but to bring the car in to get it checked out. when i arrived at gmc buick, i was then told it would be $ 150.00 up front to just check out the car. i scheduled a service appointment with bay city chevrolet in oakland ca on 7/8/13. it was determined by bay city chevrolet, " cust recall n120045- ignition was removed , no grease was applied during recall; bay city applied correct lock cylinder grease. i was charged $ 45.00. this recalled ignition that was replaced june 6, 2012, by hilltop buick whom failed to put grease in the replaced ignition resulting in possible damage to the replaced recall ignition. i was also charged $ 45.00. hilltop buick gmc was negligent in not putting grease in the replaced ignition. this recalled ignition had been on my chevy hhr from 6/4/12 to 7/8/13, without grease in the lock cylinder of this recalled ignition. i want the recalled ignition replaced and reimbursed my $45 by hilltopbuick or gmc. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Air bag light will come on and say service air bags. it comes and goes and can be reset manually. had it serviced and it had a bad connector. the dealership re pined the connector for $155.00 labor i felt ripped off. safety equipment falls under different category the radio not working. *tr

I was at the shopping center and went to cut the car off and the vehicle wouldn't cut off. the key would not come out of the ignition. the key would only turn forward, but not backward to the cut off position. i took it to a local mechanic because it was about 8 pm, the dealership was closed. they said they couldn't do any, i needed to take it to the dealer. they had seen this happened before with this vehicle. *tr

On sunday, march 31st, 2013, my vehicle was locked in the running position and it was impossible to get my key out of the ignition. the vehicle continued to run until i was able to contact a local car expert who was able to pull the fuel pump fuse to get the engine to stop running. the next day, this same person took the vehicle in to his shop and replaced the "ignition lock cylinder" per a "silent" gm recall. soon after this incident, i began hearing about a gm recall on the "ignition switch". i was then sent a letter from gm to that effect. the letter also stated that i could be reimbursed for work done if i had repairs made on my own. when i applied for a refund for the labor cost that i incurred, i was notified by the team chevy of valparaiso, in dealership and told that i would not be compensated for by expenses because the current recall was for the "ignition switch" and not the "lock cylinder". i tried to explain that the other part was also a part of a previous recall; however, the rep refused to acknowledge the issue with the "lock cylinder". after doing some online research, i have found that many people have also experienced this same "locking in the run position issue". for this reason, and the fact that gm is once again slow to acknowledge a dangerous defect in a vehicle with a history of dangerous defects, i am writing to file an official complaint. at this point, i do not feel safe in my vehicle. i currently have two recalls out on my car and have already replaced by power steering assist motor after it failed on a busy highway in the middle of a left hand turn. there are a series of major flaws with this vehicle and gm needs to take responsibility for the safety of its customers and make this right. i would also hope that the nhtsa can influence gm to expand their recall to cover all ignition related problems. *tr

While going around a bend in the road at approx 35/40mph, the power steering in my 2010 chevy hhr went out. there was a ding and then it was very difficult to turn the wheel. i almost hit a jeep that was turning into a subdivision opposite of us because i could not turn the wheel to get in the passing area. this resulted in me going off of the road. i pulled onto the next side road i saw. checked for any issues and restarted. i regained power steering and was able to be on my way. in approx. another mile or so it went out again. it did so intermittently all the way to the dealer. the dealer was of no help basically saying it was an operator error. there was a steering recall that i had taken care of earlier in the year and my mechanic said that it looks like it was replaced with equally defective parts. my mechanic also said that it's not a "wear part" and nothing that i did could have caused it to do that. it is a short on the motor/computer for the power steering. *tr

After returning home the car could not be turned off, nor could the key be removed from the ignition after disconnecting the battery to stop the engine. *tr

Same issues as others. key will not turn to off position, will not release from ignition. issue is noted all over the internet. they have acknowledged and issued a service bulletin for 2009 model year, but not for any other model years. why not for other years when obviously it is the same issue with the same part, over several of their models? *tr

Arrived home from grocery shopping and i parked my vehicle. i tried to turn the ignition off and the key would not turn. i pulled the power cable off the fuse box under the hood to shut the vehicle off. i live in a townhouse sub-division and did not want to leave the key in the ignition so i removed the ignition cylinder. i called the dealer where i bought the car and they towed it to their shop. the looked at the vehicle and told me it was under oem warranty and they had it towed to a chevrolet dealer to have it fixed. the dealership said they would fix the ignition switch under warranty but the housing would have to be replaced at a cost to me. they replaced the parts and the vehicle would not start. the dealership called the next day and said the ecm (engine control module) would not hold its programming and needed to be replaced at my cost. total repair $1275.00. *tr

Power windows: unable to roll down any window except the driver side using the driver side door panel. this, in conjunction with the door handles breaking off when the car was barely 3 years old, makes it a safety concern should i need to get out of the car through the windows. i am able to roll the windows up when using the driver side door panel button, just unable to roll them down. this started out with the front passenger side window not working, then went to the rear driver side and now the rear passenger side window can only be lowered by locking then unlocking the window and applying pressure to the window switch at an angle. if i needed to get my service dog out of the back seat and was unable to use the door, i would not be able to lower the window without effort. this puts her life or the life of a human who may be present in the back seat at serious risk. this slowly started a couple years ago and has escalated. the local chevy dealer, riverside chevy in rome, georgia, is aware of the problem, but the cost is too much for my disability income to cover.

Returning home from dinner with my husband, he put the car in park, and the ignition switch would not turn off, though he repeatedly tried. with the engine still running, we had no recourse but for him to take it to a chevrolet dealer 30 miles away, where they said they would have to replace the ignition switch, and reprogram the computer and key fobs. this is a known defect with the hhr. why has there not been a recall? they have even manufactured a replacement part for this, so they know there is a problem. it will cost us over 300.00 to get this replaced, and i don't feel it is our fault that this has happened, to us, and the many other hhr owners who are wondering where is the recall?? our car is a 2010 model, so it is not that old. *tr

While driving or parked i see the service air bag light come on. it has been going on and off. i haven't read where anyone else has been having this issue yet. but i have had the ignition stuck in the on position. i had to unplug the battery until the next morning. when i could go to the dealership. they fixed the car it was still under warranty at the time of incident. but now i am getting this service air bag light, when it does come on i can't see the mileage nor the temperature gauge. i want to know can this be fixed? *js

We've had both inside door handles crumble & break in our hands & the car company wanted almost $400.- to fix them (which i cannot afford). now i & my passenger have to roll the electric windows down, in order to get out of the car...danger... and no one cares!!! i read where others are having the same problems... what the heck??? this is not right!!! *tr

On approximately march 26 2012 at night on a trip from phoenix az to reno nv my vehicle low beam headlamps went out, i drove from kingman az to indian springs nv with just my highbeams after stopping in indian springs and trying every knob and switch in the vehicle the front low beams came on. then in the month of april the low beams went out all together and after being in the shop for 2 days it was diagnosed with a relay problem and repair was made and i had low beams again, but now the horn doesn't function and after being pulled over by the police i was advised that my taillights are out. both problems possibly related to a fuse or relay problem but i haven't had it in the shop yet. now when i purchased the veh in september of 2011 i noticed that the vehicle would shutter to a stop when applying the brakes, sometimes violently. had a brake job done in march and was advised that the front rotors were warped. had them repaired and everything was fine until approximately june 1st when the shuttering/vibrating started up again and the sometimes violently at that. i am really concerned when i apply the brakes that something may break lose when i apply the brakes. i've read on the internet many complaints from chevrolet hhr (different year models) owners of the same complaints and that after having the brakes worked on that the vibrating/shuttering comes back within 3 months. thank you. Air bag connector went bad when the car was 2 yrs old. some unknown electrical problem has caused a 5 yr battery to be dead after 2 yrs of normal usage. dealer says air bag connector is not covered under warranty and that the battery is dead. *tr

I returned from the grocery store and my key couldn't switch off the ignition or be withdrawn. the car was running while i did some research and tried out the plunger release that worked for others. i discovered that the plunger to release the lock is working properly, so it must be the ignition lock itself that is defective. i found the fuse block and located the fuel pump fuse and pulled it to stall the engine. the ignition is still on, but since it's 9pm, i'll have to wait until tomorrow before i can get it checked. *tr

I could not turn off the ignition after starting the car. dealer who replaced the switch told me the "ignition had exploded, that happens all the time with this car." he would not show me the unit he had removed, and said "they have to send it the gm." it was not a gm warranty replacement. i had to pay the deductible for the aftermarket service contract. *tr

I was at walmart my key would not turn at all. i called a chevy dealership they said that it was a recall but not on 2010 just 2009. i had the ignition switch replaced at my cost. today january 31 my key will not come out of the ignition switch which i'm for sure is defective parts on gms account this is a problem that many owners of complained on all over google. *tt

My 2010 hhr has experienced an ignition issue as well. i cannot get the key to turn back to the off position. i got home from work at midnight, put the car in park and when i tried to shut the car off it would not turn back. the only option i had was to pull the ecm fuse and disconnect the battery (or let it run out of gas). the gear shifter will allow me to shift between all gears but it won't turn off. all the electrical stay on, i have only owned this car for 3 months. *tr

Key is stuck in the cylinder with the engine running. i can not turn off the engine, on a sunday night. no options, but to leave the car at the dealership with the car running and unlocked. cost was $499.50 to replace, plus loss of work the following monday. today's date is november 30, 2013, happened again with the car off, (about two years later). i found hundreds of reported incidents of this known defect on the internet and is not considered a reason for the manufacture to recall the defect, as it does not meet a safety issue as outlined by nhtsa. *tr

I went to turn of my car after taking my wife to work, and the ignition would not turn off. i had to sit in my car for 5 hrs at the repair shop till they opened. this repair cost me $452.00 was told that the ignition was bad and the housing that the tumlers set in was bad. the traction light comes on and after about 2 min will go off. tire monitor for tire pressure comes on and goes off now it is off for the left rear tire. *kb

The key will not turn to the off position, can not turn off vehicle, have to disconnect fuel pump power and then disconnect the vehicle battery. mfg knows of this problem and will not do anything with out charging large amount of money. i have been a mechanic for many years and have not seen this problem ever. i want to see a recall to correct this very dangerous condition. *tr

Key stuck in ignition in 2010 hhr. could not turn car off or remove key. had to take to dealership to have a new ignition put in. this is a known problem by gmc, but they will not cover repairs or issue recall. the ignition switches they use are defected and should be recalled. should not fail on new vehicles. could be a danger and cause harm. *kb
