Recently reported STEERING problems on 2007 Chevrolet HHR

My power steering motor keeps going on and off...it works for a bit when starting car but then the power steering message come up on the dash board and it becomes hard to steer. apparently this is a major issue with the hhr and this needs to be corrected before someone becomes seriously hurt. gm appears not to care and have not done a recall on this. i am sure i'm not the only one who has reached out to you for help but please do just that..help!!!! *tr

My wife nearly lost control of the vehicle while driving the hhr on the sawmill parkway during a rain event. the power steering stopped working. the curvy nature of the road and the posted speed made it extremely difficult for her to control the vehicle. the hhr is built on the same platform as the chevy cobalt and has the same steering system. it is my understanding that the cobalt has a recall for the same issue. it does not make any sense that the same issue being identified by countless hhr users on the internet would not be included. the results could have easily been tragic. *tr

While on a highway entrance ramp my wife lost power steering almost hit the guard rail. after restarting the car the power steering returned, but a few days later it happened again. over the last three months it has reached the point it's happening multiple times a day, this will become a major problem in the winter. contacted a dealer and was told this the same power steering system that was recalled on the 2007 cobalt's ,but not the hhr. the cost to fix this problem that g.m. knows about is more then i can afford right but why should owners of this vehicle have to pay to fix a defect in a manufacturers product. please have them fix this before someone is hurt or killed ! *tr

On-going despite several repair and/or replacement attempts. the rotors have been replaced four times. i just did the rotors and brakes 3 weeks ago. when it is cold the suspension seems like the car is going to fall apart. the power steering comes and goes. the first time it happen i was trying to make a u-turn and was almost rammed from the passenger side door. these cars are a death trap. all my issues has been going on for about nine months.

While idling, the power steering light came on and when i moved forward there was no power steering, i reached a destination and cut the car off. the power steering came back on when i restarted the car some time later. it worked okay for a day or so then began to go off and on while driving. now it is more off than on. the chevy hhr has the same power train as the chevy cobalt which is under recall. i contacted a dealer this morning who said there is not a recall at this time for the hhr. *tr

While i was driving in rush hour traffic during a turn onto a 4 lane divided highway a power steering message came on and the alarm sounded and discovered my power steering was gone. i had to pull extremely hard to the left to complete the turn. i then pulled over to check it out and turned off the car and sat there for a minute and restarted the car and it was okay. this has happened over the last 6 days several times but always in the afternoon, not the morning. i went into the place i get my car worked on for routine service and they hooked to the computer and said it had something to do with a faulty electronic switch and would have to be taken to the dealer. this is an extreme safety issue. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while traveling 5 mph, she attempted to make a turn when the power steering warning light illuminated and the vehicle became very difficult to steer. the vehicle was able to be driven to a private mechanic where it was confirmed that the power steering had failed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was unavailable.

Power steering motor goes out and generates an error in high temperatures. restarting the car causes it to function again, but it will continue to go out randomly in high heat. this exact same component has been recalled in other chevrolet cars and is recalled on the hhr in canada. *tr

The power steering on my 2007 chevy hhr keeps cutting in and out. it has happened numerous times at all speeds. this is very dangerous as i had lost control of the car on the highway when this occurred. why is there no recall on this> same motor as the chevy cobalt and they recalled that!! same motor as the canadian hhr ( and same plant) canada recalled!! yet nothing for hte us consumer--and we bailed them out with our tax money. this is pathetic will never buy another chevy. now im stuck with a dangerous car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. while driving approximately 40 mph, there was a complete loss of power steering and a chime sounded inside of the vehicle with an illumination of the power steering warning indicator. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and the engine was turned off. the contact resumed normally after the engine was restarted. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 41,000.

May 10th 2012 was the first sign: chimes and then displays: power steering failure, turned off engine and restarted the car and it was fine, then after a few days it started again with chimes and notice of power steering failure, this got more frequent over time to the point of never having power steering. i looked this up on website and found many sighting of the same failure with chevy hhr's, i did some research and found the same part number for (eps) electric power steering motor was used in 5 different models and years 2003-2011 vehicle with recalls on only some model/years but not mine, which brings us to 2014 and nhtsa and gm announcement recall n140115 note gm bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model years 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 chevrolet hhr (non-turbo) and model year 2003 saturn ion to provide eps motor replacement for the life of the vehicle., on gm's webpage as will as reuters.com stating the same: 309,160 chevy hhr 2006-2008 and several hundred 2009 and 96,324 saturn ion from 2003 model years not subject to the recalls will be given lifetime warranties for replacement of the electronic power steering motor. but the dealerships will not honor this unless it's tied to a vin number, i called gm and the tell me my vin does not warrant the coverage. is there something wrong with the english language that i am missing? i even recall the gm ceo announcing this on tv. can someone please tell a disabled american how to convince this huge corporation to do something as simple as put the bulletin 14119 linked to the model vin numbers/year that they themselves say are not subject to the recall but are still covered under warranty so i don't spend another four hours a day trying to convince the dealerships and gm customer service that is what they meant by what they wrote. as to this date 06/11/2014 they still won"t honor their own words. *tr

When driving down highway at 55 m.p.h going around a curve, all of a sudden the electric power steering went out on my 2007 chevrolet hhr, after research on the internet, i have found that this seems to be a pretty widespread issue. it will now only work intermittently and cuts out especially in warm weather. *tr

I had just left work and had just entered the freeway driving 55 mph when i heard a chime followed by a warning message on my dashboard that read power steering. it wasn't until i began to turn through an overpass when i realized that the power steering had completly failed. i had to turn to the right and hold the turn using a strong pull of the steering wheel. this was the first time that it went out. i called the dealer to see if there was a recall. they said no. i checked the internet and found that the chevy cobalt which was built on the same platform uses the same part and that vehicle was recalled for the power steering motor. my wife refuses to drive this car. she can barely turn the wheel at a dead stop. in an emergency situation, it will be almost impossible to turn the wheel left then right to avoid an accident. *tr

My 2007 chevy hhr has developed a sudden issue with the "power steering" showing on the driver's display after a couple of ding sounds. when this occurs, the car immediately loses all power steering. there is no warning whatsoever, it is incredibly terrifying, especially if you are driving at highway speeds as i was. on the first occurrence on may 3, the light came on, i pulled off the highway into a gas station and allowed the car to rest for nearly half an hour. i then restarted the car, and the issue did not occur again. then today, the incident happened again, and again at highway speeds. i pulled onto the side of the road, turned the car off for a couple of minutes, then back on. the car had the warning light and lose of power steering happen 5 times tonight. *tr

Hhr 2007 121,000 mi warning light power steering assit failure. lamp indicator lite vehicle became difficult to steer, was able to get to destination. immediately checked internet chev 2007 hhr power steering found 72 complaints. i read if you restart car it resets and works for awhile. so is it broke or is it the computer? reset it seems to work so how is it broke? or is it breaking slowly? i seen where people are replacing motor 300 dollars... cobalt same thing ... is there class action suit being filed? this faulty equipment then our fault and we pay? chevolet i hope your taking note of your clients concerns. *tr

Power steering went out. after several miles i stopped and restarted the car and power steering came back and this occurred several time in the next few hours and days. took car in for service ... needed a new power steering motor installed for $350.00. chevy cobalt recalled and 1.5 million other cars recalled and the hhr was not ... same power steering motor ... recalled hhr in canada ... not usa. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the power steering assist failed without warning. the power steering warning light was illuminated whenever the failure recurred. the contact would turn the vehicle off and once restarted, the power steering assist would reset independently. the failure would recur within minutes. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the electronic power assist needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 87,000. ..updated 04/16/12 *bf updated 04/25/12

The power steering in my 2007 hhr stops working at random times. the steering wheel is hard to turn and once i turn it off and back on it works again. the power steering light comes on at the same time it randomly happens! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the steering wheel would become difficult to turn and the key would become lodged in the ignition. the dealer repaired the failure by replacing the ignition switch and the power steering pump. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 138,000.

The power steering failed while driving. the power steering warning message showed. this has happened several times. when you turn the car off and on it resets. the reset may last for minutes or days. i researched online and there are unlimited stories with the same issue. the chevy cobalts power steering motor has been recalled. the hhr uses the same part as the cobalt. *tr

While backing out of a parking space, the warning bell sounded and the display read power steering. while it could still be driven, it was very difficult to steer, especially from a complete stop. after the first leg of the trip, the power steering worked, upon restarting the car, for about 10 miles, when the bell rang and the power steering stopped working, again. it appears to happen after having been driven on roads with a number of turns, whereas it doesn't fail during highway driving. from the number of complaints about assorted models of this very same vehicle, it looks like gm is aware of the problem but is unwilling to do the right thing. there is no excuse for this not to have been included with other recalls. *tr

My complaint is my chevy hhr. 2007.on friday 1/27/2012 my wife was driving my hhr from work and she realize that she couldn't turn the car due to the power steering had went out.my wife had made it home safely thank god.she stated to me it scared her when she couldn't turn the car.when she got out of the car i check out the problem an found out it was the power sterring. today while on line i found that chevy had a recall on cobalt and not hhr's.that is sad you have a recall on a car that have the same problems.this problem need to be address before someone get seriously hurt.im currently unemployed and don't have the money at this time to fix my car. some one needs to look at this soon. *tt

While driving the power steering stops working this makes the truck hard to steer for a small women this is a problem and dangerous and even more she has our small child in the truck with her. *tt

While going up a curved entrance ramp at 20 mph the electric power steering motor shut down. if i had been going any faster i feel i would have not been able to control the vehicle. the power steering motor has shut down two more times since the first incident. the power steering resumes working after the engine is shut off for approximately 10 minutes and then restarting the car. the failure has happened all three times on a long curve. *tr

I continue to have a dummy light come on my message center on my dash saying power steering. i just moved to ct from lousiana. i thought because the weather was getting cold. i checked the fluid and it was not frozen or empty. i just had taken it to the dealer for a oil change and vehicle check and all fluids were where they should be. no leaks. i did a search on the net and found 1000's of complaints of this same issue. any new thoughts on what to do? *tr

While coming to a stop to make either a right hand or left hand turn, i had the power steering stop working, and a power steering message illuminate on my dashboard message center. this happened 4 separate times within a 3 hour period, while using my vehicle to make deliveries for a local company. in each instance, i was able to put vehicle in park, shut off the engine, wait a couple of seconds, restart the engine, and the power steering would work for a short time. gm has reduced price on the defective part in the us, but, still no recall on the problem in the us. *kb

Two days ago, while driving 25 mph in my parents' residential development, i received a "power steering" alert on my information bar and immediately lost control of my steering. i was in the process of making a left turn and luckily there was no one else on the street at the time or i surely would have hit them rather than just driving onto the curb before coming to a stop. it was extremely hard to turn the steering wheel in any either direction. i was able to regain control only after turning the ignition off and restarting. after the visit with my parents, the power steering went out three times in a twelve mile drive home. in two days this has now happened six times without rhyme or reason at varying speeds and at different lengths of drive time. i first discovered the problem on friday night and immediately began to research the problem on the internet. i discovered that the chevy cobalt and chevy hhr from years 2006-2010 share the same steering motor (not a pump with fluid) and they are a known problem. apparently there has been a recall for the cobalt but not the hhr? there was talk of a recall in canada for the hhr but not in the usa? i don't understand why when this is a very serious safety concern. i contacted my dealership early on saturday morning. i told him what was happening and he said that "the serial number on my particular vehicle was not eligible for part replacement coverage". how are some covered and not others? i cannot drive the car without fear of again losing control in the middle of a turn, but this time causing a serious accident. this needs to be investigated immediately. *tr

My clutch went out and the car stopped working gas i was driving along the highway. it was not during a shift, just acceleration. the clutch did the exact same thing on december 23, 2013 (mileage about 115,000). i have driven manual transmissions previously and have gone well over 100k miles without replacing the clutch and i am now on my 3rd clutch. i know there is a tsb on a possible bad flywheel (which was not replaced either time), but a clutch to go out twice on a car that has seen for the last 55k almost all highway miles indicates there is a problem with the car. *tr

This vehicle has been having power steering issues for months. my wife has been driving the car and just recently mad me aware of it. i contacted a local chevy dealer and was informed that there was no known problems with the power steering on these cars but requested i supply a vin # and he would check further. a local repair shop looked at the power steering but had no idea how to begin to fix it. i see by check online that there has been several reported problems with power steering motors on the hhr. would like to know how or if this is being addressed by g.m.? is the ntsb involved in this at all? *tr

This happened when i first bought the car, we could not get the key out of ignition and it would not stay park. so i called dealer and got nowhere, i even made a complaint on here i believe stating someone is going to get hurt. still to this day i can put the car in and out of gear without having to apply the brake!!! gm has known about this for a long time and there should be a recall. my car didn't have a warranty when i purchased it so they are no help. so i was able to take the shifter console apart and see what was happening, i got my key out and put it together and it did it again and again and again. we have just learned how to manipulate the car so we can drive it. *tr

My 2007 hhr has had multiple incidents in the last 3 weeks with the power steering light illuminating and then loss of power steering instantly. almost missed making a turn off the road because steering is non responsive. once you turn off the engine and restart the car, power steering is restored; unfortunately, this issue is occuring more frequently. internet research show numerous complaints with this exact issue, chevrolet has recalled other vehicles that use the same part and the 2007 hhr has been recalled in canada. why hasn't that happened here? is it going to take a death and subsequent lawsuit for them to step up and fix this known problem? i am calling my extended warranty service today and see if this is covered. repairs unfortunately can't wait for chevrolet to do the right thing! *tr

The power steering indicator came on and then the power steering went out. i took the car to an auto parts store, a worker there said that chevy had a recall on the cobalt for the same issue, but there is no recall for the chevy hhr. there are other people with this same issue. *tr

While driving approximately 45 mph, the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel and the wheel became very difficult to turn and i almost crashed going around a corner. i stopped at a safe location and turned off the engine. the power steering returned once i restarted however this happened again the following day and twice yesterday and twice again today. i did an on-line search and see that many other hhr drivers are having the same problem. something needs to be done with correcting this defect before someone is killed. *tr

I was driving the car at approx. 15mph when the power steering light came on and steering was hard and non responsive. i could not steer the car. i stopped the car, in the middle of the lane, turned the ignition off and then on and restarted the car and the problem went away. this is the first instance of this problem with this car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact was driving 70 mph when the vehicle failed to drive straight and swayed into another lane. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer, but the manufacturer was contacted and made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 152,000.

The power steering light cam on, and the vehicle became hard to steer. turn the engine off, and the problem went away. it is now coming on every time the vehicle is started, and does not correct itself. i know there was a recall on the cobalt, which shares the same parts with the hhr. i feel that gm should recall the hhr as well. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. while driving approximately 30 mph, the contact was unable to turn the steering wheel. the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact shut the engine off and regained power steering after restarting. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel would sporadically become stiff and difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was shut off and when restarted, the failure was corrected. the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor repaired. the failure and current mileages were approximately 75,000. the vin was unavailable.

The steering assist failed. "power steering" message showed up in the dash. steering might fail while going straight, then will not work until vehicle is turned off then restarted. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. while driving approximately 45 mph the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel and the steering wheel became stiff and difficult to maneuver. the failure occurred approximately four times intermittently at different speeds. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
