We have classified the 404 complaints from 2007 Chevrolet HHR about STEERING into the following categories.
I noticed my steering wheel started pulling to the right and difficult to make a left turn. i got new tires and took it in for an alignment and was told they could not perform the alignment because the rack and pinion might be bad. the problem was they could not get the tires to stay straight. while the car was on the lift, they started the car and the steering wheel (and wheels) spun really fast all the way to the right. the shop wanted $1000 to replace the rack and pinion but i believe it is steering column assembly. got a second opinion and they agreed with me. i am not experiencing an noises or shaking. will try changing out the power steering motor this weekend. *tr
Power steering intermittently stops working. this has happened 4 times in the last month. power steering failure is indicated on dash when it happens. after shutting the vehicle off and restarting, the steering is fine. this happens without warning at any speed. *tr
While driving my car, the power steering light comes on, causing me to manually pull my car over. turn the car off, and then the car is fine. this has happened 3x to this point. *tr
While driving the power steering message comes on the dash and the steering is very hard, i turn off the car and back on,then it is fine, now it happens all the time, dealer sent me to chevy dealer which said no recall or extended warranty to cover repair, asked for corp number and got bogus number which is not corp number, i called back and asked again and that number there is never any answer. have already done the email and spoke to rep with chevy before on this and she stated they had not heard of this issue before and would let me know but to bring to dealer and have fixed but to keep receipt for pay back if recall happens, is recalled in friends cobalt (same part #) but not in hhr, i have now filed complaint with bbb. i am woman and carry my small grandkids in this car each day but i am getting stronger in my arms having to steer this way. why is this hhr not on the lemon list yet? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated while driving various speeds, the power steering would stop working sporadically. while driving 65 mph, the clutch caught on fire and disintegrated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for the clutch failure. the technician diagnosed that the clutch assembly needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was unknown.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated while driving various speeds a chime sounded inside of the vehicle with an immediate loss of power steering. the warning indicator illuminated during the same time of the malfunction. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. upon restarting, the vehicle it operated normally. the failure recurred sporadic and over a period of time became a constant occurrence. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
Power steering stops working while driving and creates a dangerous situation, especially if you are in a curve.i can turn the engine off and restart it and steering will work for a short time. these cars have been recalled in canada, why not in the usa. maybe it's political. i have been to three chevy dealers and gotten a different story from each one. gm is replacing these motors in cobalt models, and also on some saturn models. this is an electric power steering assist motor. the first dealer i went to said i probably needed power steering fluid. i told him it was an electric power steering motor and did not use power steering fluid. he was the service mgr! i was told he would check with the factory and call me the next day. after two weeks i went back to the dealer and saw the same service. mgr. he acted like he did not remember me but said they had a lot of these hhr in with power steering problems. so go figure. another dealer told me $1800.00 to repair. the power steering motor cost is $107.00 at most chevy dealers, plus installation. you get nothing but b/s from dealers. this is a safety hazard, a women or old person could not steer these cars when power steering stops working.!!!!!!! *tr
I was returning home from work and was rounding a curve entering my addition when the power steering quit working. i barely missed running up and over the boulevard between the two sides of the street (cuba blvd) in the river oaks subdivision in monroe, la. i took the vehicle to my dealer (ryan chevrolet in monroe, la ) on 03/28/2013 to be examined. they stated that there was a recall on the 2006 models for this problem but not on the 2007 models. they provided an estimate of 1400.00 to replace the electric steering motor and the steering column to correct the problem. they charged me 133.10 for this inspection. i did not have the fix made as i cannot afford it due to my low income. the power steering continues to fail several times per week as of this writing. i am writing because i just noticed in the news that nhtsa has issued a recall for this same problem on the 2009 and 2010 models but not on the 2007 model that i own .seems strange that 2006. 2009 and 2010 models are recalled but not the 2007 ( 2008). when i took it in to the dealership the service representative told me that they have had several reports of this problem but could not fix the 2007 because it had not been recalled. i could get the name of that person if it would be helpful. thanks for reading and pray for my safety and others too. note: i purchased this vehicle new in january 2007 from bunker chevrolet in marion, in where i lived previously. *tr
When car is being driven power steering goes completely out and makes car hard to turn and steer. *tr
While driving , coming onto a busy intersection my car lost power and steering, i was in the far right lane, so traffic was able to go around us, this happen after i picked my kids up from school, it was a nightmare, we were under a hill and was almost rear ended several times. i called the local chevrolet dealer service department, told them what happen, they told me to get the car to them so soon as possible. we had the car tolled to them at our own expend, they said it was a power steering problem, they charged us to fix it, but sometime we still have some power problems and problems turning key and, key getting jammed in ignition switch, when i reported the problem to them in april or may 2013, they wanted to charge me again to have my car checked, i couldn't afford it. i'm still waiting for my appt. for the recall. i asked to be refunded the $287.52 for repair, plus$40.00 toll fee, the service department told me to contact gm for the refund. i hope you are gm, if not forward this info.to them or send me the address i need to send this to. thank you *tr
I was going into a left hand curve and all of a sudden the power steering went out and the dash started dinging the power steering warning light. *tr
I was driving the automobile at about 65 miles an hour when a dashboard light came on saying power steering. at this time it became hard to steer. i pulled over in the breakdown lane, switched the ignition off and switched it back on. this corrected the problem for a short time, now it's a daily random problem. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated while driving at various speed, the power steering assist failed followed by an unknown warning message and chime. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the power steering motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 75,000.
While driving power steering began cutting out and then would come back on after restarting, but eventually failed completely. the car is now very difficult to steer at slow speeds or hard turns. apparently this model has a history with this problem but gm will not cover it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the power steering assist malfunction and the power steering warning lamp illuminated. the contact mentioned that once she turned the vehicle off and restarted, the vehicle resumed normal function. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 64,000. *tr
The power steering is not functioning. it just stopped working, noticed it while pulling out of the garage. gm has done recalls an similar if not the same problem just in different models coblat and g5 or g6. *tr
Driving down the highway at approx 60mph when the steering indicator light came on and i lost power steering. incident was on 6 lane freeway in morning traffic, not the best time to loose steering. after doing extensive research, this is an ongoing unacknowledged problem. gm does not recognize this as a malfunction, although the dealers i have spoken to, since this happened this morning, are well aware of the problem. *tr
At intermittent times and speeds, the power steering would just fail and the steering wheel lock up. there were times on the highway when my husband was driving where he narrowly avoided a crash. there were times when i was driving on a busy city street, where it was all i could do to avoid a crash by using all my strength to turn into a parking lot and restart the car, hoping it wouldn't happen again. this is a safety issue because the failure could happen at any time and any speed, causing a crash. we paid for this to be repaired and haven't had a problem since. this should be done on all of the cars that might have this issue. it seems that quite a lot of people have had this happen in the hhr. *tr
Driving on freeway the power steering went out on me almost crashed, also the exhaust just started making loud noise as well. *tr
Dash lights up on message board power steering, it quits work , but will turn manually but hard. cut the car off and start again and it works???? some said it the square fuse gone and to replace it???? *tr
Power steering failure light came on dash and was extremly hard to steer, this has happened numerous times, progressively getting worse, checked with dealer no recall on hhr however there is a recall on the cobalt with same problem. *tr
Electric power steering quit working during a slow turn, it quit several times during the course of the day, also got a "power steering" message on the dash. *tr
While traveling on highway in washington dc and going around a curve, the power steering failed, causing my car to veer into the next lane before i could force it back. i was lucky it was very early so there was no car in the other lane. after doing research online, i have found many people complaining about the same issue with the hhr. it also sounds like the same issue as the cobalt, g5 and saturn, which have had recalls/special extended coverage. this was very frightening and this could easily cause a major accident. i was very lucky. *tr
While driving 65mph the power steering light came on and i had no power steering other chevy vehicles with the same part have been recalled but not the hhr this is a safety issue i would like to know when it will be recalled or does someone have to be killed before the issue is fixed. *tr
When i started the car in the morning the read out on the dash said "power steering problem". the wheel would not turn at all. i restarted the car and the steering worked. i took it to castle chevrolet, villa park, il. for repair. they changed the power steering column assembly costing me $811.45. i found out that the chevy cobalt 2007 is subject to recall #10v073000, march 3, 2010 for the same part. i feel this part should be recalled and i should get a full refund. did i mention how dangerous this is? loss of steering at 60 mph? what is chevy waiting for, fatality? *tr
While driving in a store parking lot toward the exit my 2007 chevy hhr became difficult to steer. the dash warning system lite indicating the power steering had failed. car is in my driveway waiting repair. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that he attempted to open the front driver's side door from the interior of the vehicle when the door handle fractured. the contact opened the front driver side window and opened the door from the exterior of the vehicle. additionally, while driving approximately 40 mph the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing of the steering failure. the technician advised that the power steering motor would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
I had to replace left and right control arms on this vehicle, brakes constantly can't unlock doors from inside, have to roll down window to unlock, now having engine problems and one of the control arms going bad again.plus something is causing rain to get in my car somewhere, because when it rains at smells mildewy. *tr
Powers steering went out at highway speed in a turn. has went out intermittently since first occurrence. if injury or death occurs, can we all file a class action suit? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to control. the power sttering warning warning light illuminated as a warning chime sounded. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer diagnosed the failure as the power steering motor. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 49,500. the vin was not available.
At any speed and at random times my power steering will go out. i have had to pull over and shut the car off 10 times in 30 miles to reset the power steering motor to get home safely. there is a recall for chevrolet cobalt and malibu for the same issue. upon research on the internet there are multiple people that are having the same issue. when gm was contacted i found out that my power steering motor that cuts out is the same part number as the one in the cars under recall for the same issue. this has made me almost lose control going around turns and i feel that it is a hazard to anyone that drives the hhr's with the same power steering motor. thank you for your time. *tr
Losing power steering assist at random times. occurring 3-4 times daily, at high and low speeds. when car is turned off and back on, power steering resets and works again. fuse is damaged each time power steering is lost, and fuse is replaced after each occurrence. *tr
Started the car and the power steering was out. my husband noticed the 60 amp square fuse was blown. looked it up on line and found the hundreds of hhr owners had the exact same problem. *tr
Well just before inspection time, which should be now. the power steering light has come off and on. more on than off. steering becomes manual steering and hard to handle. this should be a recall on the part. for someone that's not as strong this may cause serious injury or wreck, during handling of the vehicle. especially during turning and changing lanes. if this has not been recalled yet i bet i know why. chevy and gm motors are afraid of losing money on repairs and parts. humans that drive the vehicle type should be put on priority. my wife was very afraid when it went out on her while driving on a major freeway. she had to pull over and get her wits back in order to drive back home. im not paying no 450.00 us dollars for repair, i know how to fix it and can get a cheaper part. but if my wife would have had a wreck because of the power steering motor going out, there would of been a definite law suit. please recall the part. human beings safety comes first and foremost. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated while driving various speeds or at a traffic light, the steering wheel locked. the contact had to stop the vehicle and allow it to cool down before restarting it. the dealer advised him that they were familiar with the failure and informed him of the repair cost. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileage was approximately 25,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, a chime sounded and suddenly there was a complete loss of power steering. the vehicle was able to restart and function as normal. the failure occurred sporadically. in addition, the contact was involved in a crash on two separate occasions where the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed and there were no injuries reported. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unavailable. the vin was unavailable.
I was driving in heavy traffic on a major city street in fort myers florida trying to make a right hand turn when all at once my power steering went out on my car. it was so hard to steer the car but i was able to get my car semi off the street. the power steering light lite up on my dash panel. i turn the car off and went for help. a gentleman was kind enough to stop look at my car and could not find where the power steering was. he then got in my car and restarted my car and it was working just fine. he advised me to take my car to auto zone and have it checked out as they would hook it up to their equipment and fined the problem. once at auto zone they told me it was a recall problem and to take it to a chevy dealer to get it fixed. it cost me $278.00 and was told by the service department that it was not on a recall notice but that it was a problem with the hhr's. they advised me to contact gm and see if they would take care of the cost. guess what i was told it was not under warranty or a recall problem and it was on me. after reading about all the problems reports on this with the power steering it scares me to think it could go out again as i have read that some have had it to happen more than one time to them. *tr
Driving home from work on evening i heard a "bing" and a warning message came on in my dash reading "power steering" and i immediately lost the power steering assist on my car entirely making it very difficult to maneuver. i was barely able to get off the road i was on and safely into a parking lot. if i had been traveling at higher speeds or in the middle of a turn when this failure occurred it would have almost certainly ended in a crash. the power steering motor (the same part recalled on 2007 chevy cobalts, which share a power train and chassis with the hhr) failed and had to be replaced at only just over 40,000 on a well maintained vehicle. i would suggest further inquiry into whether the recall on this part has been comprehensive enough and should perhaps include other makes and models such as the hhr. i have been in contact with gm regarding this safety issue and have received little to no help. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the contact also mentioned that the headlights and instrumental panel lights intermittently failed and the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was not able to diagnose the failures. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
I was driving on highway about to turn when the power steering just shut down. the vehicle became hard to steer and almost caused an accident. after going to dealer they replaced the power steering motor but this issue has not been recalled by chevy. very dangerous. many complaints made about the same issue. *tr
Power steering fails while driving. *tr
We purchased this vehicle used in late 2009 with approximately 30000 miles. a couple years into ownership the car engine began shutting off while driving unexpectedly, 4 times during left hand turns where we were turning into parking lots or driving over a dip in the road. once over a pothole. it's very scary , left hand turns are dangerous maneuvers anyways , let alone having your car stall while doing it. these incidents occurred before we ever heard of recall. we received the notices in the mail , but parts were not available and the dealer is clearly overwhelmed and annoyed. our first contact was incredibly rude and put my husband on hold for twenty minutes and then basically said don't call us we will call you and hung up on him.. in may the power steering issue happened while i was driving on the freeway traveling 65mph on a freeway curve during heavy winds . the chime sound was followed by the error message and i became very afraid and the car was very hard to steer. i finally got to shoulder after completely panicking because i did not understand what happened. the car will resume normal operation after turning off for a period and restarting, but it's just a matter of time till it happens again. the recall on the steering is not being covered because my model year is not included in recall even though gm is covering it in other 2007???? makes no sense. i'm told that they are extending lifetime warranty to original owner but most of these model years are already in resale market so we are excluded, so i guess this will fall on our pockets. . i am very annoyed and i refuse to drive my kids around in this death trap anymore. i asked for loaner finally. i'm done with this thing. *js
My son was driving the car, the "power steering" info light flashed in the info area, and then the power steering went out, making the car difficult to steer. after turning the car off, and then later restarting the car, the power steering acted fine at first, then later it did the same thing with the power steering, the same evening. i am aware that there is a recall on this same power steering unit, on the chevy cobalt. *tr
The hhr has electric power steering. the steering assist fails and makes the car almost impossible to steer. this is an interment problem. shutting the car off and restarting will reset the fault and allow the steering to have power assist again. it seems gm has recalled all cars with that steering system except the hhr. this is so dangerous because you never know when you are going to loose assist. i can happen in a turn and you will not be able to steer through the turn. someone is going to die due to this issue it is very dangerous. called my local gm dealer and was told i'm on the hook for the expense to repair this issue. canada did recall this make and model for this issue. how is it a safety problem in canada but not in the us? *tr
While driving the power steering sign come on and unable to steer safely, and its becoming for frequently.. *tr
Lost power in the steering as i went to make a turn. had difficulty turning steering wheel. next morning steering was back to normal.today (09-090-2013) i am having the same steering problem. *tr
The electric power steering motor on my hhr failed close to this date while being driven down our street at around 25 mph and i had to have it replaced. i didn't think much about the failure at the time but now i see electric power steering motor failures are the reason for a current recall. my hhr wasn't part of the recall but i wonder if it's motor also has a problem. my mechanic used a 19257876 motor kit for the repair. a google search for this part shows the following applications. chevrolet cobalt 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 chevrolet hhr 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 chevrolet hhr 5 door high roof h/b 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 chevrolet hhr 5 door uplevel high roof h/b 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 pontiac g5 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 pontiac pursuit 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 saturn ion ...
I was driving my car and suddenly my power steering failed. at first i thought it was a wiring issue because the fuse was blown. i replaced the fuse 3 times before taking the car to my mechanic who told me its very common for the power steering motor to fail in hhrs. i had to replace it out of pocket. i have not had problems since then. it seems like 2007 hhr should be in the power steering recall list too. *tr
I was operating my vehicle at highway speed when my power steering failed. i heard an indicator sound and then 'power steering' appeared in my driver information center/odometer area. at this time, the vehicle became extremely difficult to steer because the power steering had failed. i slowed to a complete stop, turned the vehicle off, and restarted it. the power steering began to function again. approximately 5-10 minutes, the power steering failed again while i was at highway speed right before a large curve. i was unable to stop and turn the vehicle off and had to steer with great difficulty to a location where i could turn the vehicle off. this has occurred 3 times in the past 2 weeks. i am no longer operating the vehicle and have it schedule for maintenance. i believe, if the vehicle were to be operated at higher speeds and this occurred it could be dangerous because the vehicle is extremely difficult to operate and their is no warning that a malfunction is about to occur. *tr
Power steering failure started in early 2012 and increased in frequency and duration until repair on 7/26/2012. initially coad chevrolet dealer of cape girardeau, mo, said it would be covered by recall, and on the their invoice #547639 it is printed "customer requests a factory recall be performed, or viss print shows this unit to be open for a particular campaign. special policy #10413 pwr steering in dic. no power steering at times." along with "perform recall as per bulletin; inspect/replace as needed", but then they added "replace power steering motor as per estimate" and charged $281.59. their explanation was that vin really was not covered, but gm might cover and reimburse for the repair if we contacted them directly. gm customer service was contacted many times starting on 8/17/12 or earlier and on 9/19/12 stated they would not cover repair. in canada this failure was identified and covered for this model year and others. i want gm to reimburse me for the obvious and dangerous defect that they are aware of and are selectively covering. i have the invoice containing the above information. *tr
