2006 door handle broke for no reason. is unable to open from inside. its a sefety issue if u have to get out in an emergency. *tt

Drivers door is broken, have to roll window down to get out, also, remote is not working, i have to lock/unlock with the horn honking everytime i park. after doing a search online, i found that a lot of other people have had the same problem, and it seems to stem from the fact, that chevy has decided not to be built like a rock, instead, built with plastic. (can you even recycle it?)

Inside door handle on my 2006 chevrolet hhr broke off when i opened the door. this creates a safety issue for the driver as the door cannot be opened from the inside without lowering the left front window and opening with the outside handle. if the electrical system is damaged then the window will not open. the driver would then need to crawl over the center console to the right door or the front seat to exit the cars rear door. in a collision or fire the driver may be injured, panicked or confused and not be able to exit the vehicle. the plastic handle should be replaced with a more substantial metal one. *tr

I have a 2006 hhr. while trying to exit out the passenger side door the door handle broke in my hand so now anyone sitting there has to open the window an reach out and open the door (or someone has to open for them). the other problem i just encountered is that the "door open" message and dinging noise keeps coming up while i am driving. the door is not open! also, the radio won't shut off when you turn the car off and open the door. when pushing the inside lock/unlock button on the driver's side, all the doors lock except the driver's side. it goes down, but comes back up. my mechanic thinks it is a door latch problem. also the alarm goes off by itself after locking the car with the remote. i was awoken at 3:00 am to the sound of my car going off, this has never happened before! gm needs to do some recalls on these items, as i see a lot of complaints concerning the same items. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated while attempting to open the drivers door the inside door handle detached from the door panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer inspected the vehicle, and stated that the door handle, and the door panel needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 64,000.

The interior door handles on the 2006 chevrolet hhr fell off. the only way to fix it is to replace the entire door panel just for the cheap plastic handle for approximately $500.00. if i was in an accident and the car would not start again, i could not get out of the car through the driver's side because i would not be able to roll down the window to open the door from the outside. or if the car were on fire, i simply would not be able to escape. this needs to be a recall item as this is a huge safety factor. a bigger safety factor that the latch on the pop up middle console on the chevy hhr that was recalled back in 2008 (i think). there are blogs all over the internet of people like me who are experiencing the same problem. i am a single working girl who simply cannot afford a $500 interior door panel replacement for a cheap plastic handle because this is not reasonable. i tried to get chevy to replace it and they simply said they would give me a $40 discount. that is ridiculous!!! i bought the car be cause it was economical and not one thing about this replacement sounds economical. this is a safety hazard and could lead to a death. *tr

2006 chevrolet hhr. consumer states several problems with vehicle *tgw the consumer stated his sons vehicle had a severe shimmy in the steering wheel and became progressively worse when the brake was applied. the pads and rotors were replaced twice and the third time the rotors were machined, but the problem continued. there was also a strange noise coming from the front suspension, but the dealer was unable to pinpoint the problem. at 42,000 miles the air condition made a loud screeching noise for 2 minutes, then stopped working. at 68,000 miles, a metal skid plate had fallen from underneath the vehicle. soon after, the exhaust was very loud. the vehicle was taken to the repair shop and the consumer was informed the catalytic converter had cracked. the vehicle lost power and a cylinder had to be replaced, the check engine light would come on and then go off, the temperature gauge did not work, so the air condition only worked if the check engine light was off. the door locks did not work, the radio worked intermittently, the sun visor would fall down at random times. there were times when the vehicle would not start. the consumer stated even with an alignment, new struts, shocks and good tires, the vehicle continually pulled to the right. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the door panel interior was interfering with the opening of the door. she also mentioned that she would have to wind down the window in order to open it from the outside. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who informed the contact that she needed to replace the interior driver side door panel. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000. updated 3/7/11 *cn the consumer stated he/she was unable to open the door, unless he stuck his hand out the window to open it from the outside. updated 03/14/11

I own a 2006 chevy hhr lt. thanksgiving day i went to move my car out of the driveway and when i tried to get out of the car the interior door handle on the driver door came off in my hand. i have done my research and found this is a common problem with this vehicle. i even walked up to another hhr i saw on a parking lot and it had the same problem. my safely concern is that i cannot open the door without rolling down my window and reaching outside the car to the exterior handle. if i was in an accident and had a electrical failure i could not exit the car because i could not roll down the window. everything i have found in my research is that chevrolet is not recgonizing this as a real problem and from what i have seen/read they have been unwilling to correct the problem when it occurs or help the vehicle owners in any way. i have checked on the repair and found that the door handle itself can not be replaced that you have to buy an entire door panel for over $400 and that is just the part, no labor. how can this be a known problem, and chevrolet not stand behind their product? the inability to exit my vehicle in the aftermath of an accident greatly concerns me and should concern chevrolet especially with the multiple complaints i have read online of this issue occurring. *tr

My key continues to get stuck in the ignition. about 4 months ago this happened and i took my car back to the dealer, they charged me $50.00 to get the key out they say they greased the ignition i guess. i was looking through my car manual and it tells you how to get the key out of the ignition.i don't think the dealer charging me $50.00 was fair. is there some way that can be fixed? i can not afford $50.00 and i'm get tired of putting my finger in the hole under the steering wheel to release the key. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr lt. the contact stated that while opening the driver side door, the interior handle fractured from the door frame. the manufacturer advised that the door handle failure was not recalled and that they will not assist with the repair. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 67,000 and the current mileage 70,648.

2006 chevrolet hhr interior door handle failures. in my instance the plastic handle that is used to open the door on the drivers side broke off. this is a widely complained about issue on the web. if you google "hhr drivers side interior door handle broken" you get 1000's of people discussing this issue. the cost to repair is very high and people are not doing it. chevy does not sell just the plastic part, they require you to purchase an entire assembly, the cost runs nearly $600 with labor for a plastic part. the issue is that dealerships do not stock this part, they need to order it and it takes time, this is a safety issue as the only way to exit the car is to open the door from the outside, so that requires rolling a window down and opening it from the outside. if you needed to exit the vehicle in a hurry, such as after an accident, you would not be able to do so. this is a great concern. besides the fact that this is being reported as a problem and chevy is not trying to rectify the situation, or to even provide the part outside of purchasing the entire assembly. *tr

Inside driver side handle broke off, unable to open door from the inside the electronic window must be opened and door opened from the outside. *tr

Driver side inside door handle bfoke off, need to open window and reach outside to open door.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the driver side interior door handle was inoperable. when attempting to exit the vehicle and engaging the door handle, the door would not open. the vehicle was inspected at an authorized dealer but not repaired. the manufacturer advised the contact that the technician did not locate a manufacturing defect therefore they would not assist with repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 30,600. updated 12/22/10 *bf updated 12/29/10*jb

Chevy hhr 2006 drivers side interior door handle broke off in hand during normal use. made of cheap plastic. auto maker states that the only way to repair is to completely remove the door and pay. all of this for a piece of plastic which should cost pennies to replace? i suffer from neck pain and have trouble rolling the window down to reach out and open the door. they have to fix this at their cost. this is obviously no fault of the owners and only due to faulty (plastic) equipment they are using. *tr

As filed by many other owners of a chevy hhr, something needs to be done about the inside door handles. they are made of cheap plastic and mine broke as well. i can't believe a us company such as gm would make a cheap part that could end up endangering the lives of its customers. if you were to get in an accident or need to exit the car in any emergency situation, this could cost your life. gm needs to recall these cars and do the right thing. replace them with a more durable handle as soon as possible. or will they wait until something happens before they take action? *tr

My hhr driver's interior handle broke off a few weeks ago. i feel that gm needs to recall 2006 hhr cars and replace the door handle. i do not have $400.00 to give the dealership. a month ago i just paid for key ignition switch to be fixed for $400.00. *tr

2006 hhr ls - driver's side door handle broke off with normal opening of the door. could not get out of the car without putting window down and using the outside handle. if this was an emergency - i would have been stuck in the car. *tr power steering failure - power steering quits while driving - was going 55 mph. and the power steering just went off.. pulled to the side with difficulty - shut the car off. restarted car - and the power steering was working again. very dangerous situation.

Interior door handle broken. door must be opened using outside handle. handle is plastic. entire interior door panel must be replaced. part costs $400.00 plus labor - replacement handle is plastic also. car is 2006 chevrolet hhr with 53,000 miles. *tr

The interior door handle of my 2006 chevrolet hhr broke off during normal use. it's made from a cheap plastic. this is a serious safety hazard as a person cannot quickly exit the car if this happens. if my driver's side door just broke, how soon before the other three in the car break off from normal operation. this is a manufacturing defect and should be taken care of from the manufacturer. the dealer wants me to pay $400-$450 to replace a $10 plastic door handle that they poorly designed. this should be a recall from gm to replace these cheap handles before someone does have a serious situation. *tr

2006 chevy hhr . the drivers side door interior door handle snapped off in my hand when i tried to open the door, smacking into my knuckle and almost causing my hand to fly back into my face. the door must now be opened by rolling down the electric window and opening from the outside handle. two dealers so far refuse to fix the issue, telling me they don't have parts. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. while attempting to open the driver side door from the inside the contact noticed that the door handle broke off in her hand. the contact called the manufacturer who stated that the handle needed to be replaced. there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 49000. updated 09/24/10. *lj the consumer stated the handle can not be replaced without the entire inside door panel being replaced. updated 09/24/10

If my battery dies i can not get in the car no matter what. my car is equipped with one lock on the driver side. because the battery is dead the car will not engage the actuator on the lock even with key entry. i have to call a locksmith to get in the car. if i accidentally locked a baby in the car and the battery was not working i cannot get in the car. key, remote whatever. i have to call a locksmith. in my case the actuator stopped working. so regardless if i have a key or remote i cannot get in. if this actuator fails on the driverside i cannot get in, but my baby may been the car. *tr

Ignition key does not come out of the steering column it is stuck in the ignition ,car starts and shuts off but the key cannot be removed. *tr

The power steering doesnt work anymore, both of the front inside door handles broke off, water leaking in passenger front coming from the moter area somewhere i called the dealership but no recalls and i have read on numorus forums of other people having the same problem but gm still hasn't issued a recall. *tt

Key gets stuck / can not turn to off position and remove the key. if you can not remove the key within an hour, your battery will be depleted. there is an actuating rod in the shifter that pushes a micro switch that completes a circuit to pull a solenoid in the steering column to allow the ignition switch to be tuned to the off position (and remove the key) when in park. the plastic part in the shifter assembly breaks and allows the actuating rod to fall out. the fix for this is to replace the shifter assembly. $185 not including labor. the quick fix for this is there is a plastic plug on the under side of the steering column. inside you have to feel for the end of that solenoid and depress it to release the key. gm tsb #06-07-30-004f acknowledges the common occurrence of this failure from 2006 to 2010 hhr, cobalt, and pontiac g5 . although, if you are out of warranty, your dealer may be reluctant to fix this problem without cost. tires, ball joints, brakes, what have you, fail and are, no doubt, a common occurrence. if fact that is to be expected. but the shifter in an automatic? i would think that the shifter in an automatic should last the lifetime of the car. imo, they installed a poorly made part. to me, this is obvious since they are stating in that tsb, 2006 - 2010 shifter are expected to fall apart as mine did. i have a 1965 plymouth belvedere, the oldest car in my possession, that the shifter never needed to be repaired. in fact i've never had an automatic shifter problem with any car. it was stated in a forum that gm should have considered a metal collar or ring around the plastic bit that holds that pin to reinforce it and this problem would have never become a nuisance. also, when that pin falls out, the shift lever is free to move without pressing the shift button on the front of the shift lever, so it could accidentally be moved to another gear while driving, even reverse!! i guess that is not enough of a safety issue for gm to worry about. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated while attempting to exit the vehicle, from the drivers side, the interior door handle fractured. the contact was unable to access the exterior door handle and fifteen minutes later, he was assisted in exiting the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the failure where he was advised that the entire door would need replacing in order to correct the failure. the vehicle was not repaired and the door handle remained fractured. in addition, the keys would sporadically become stuck in the ignition and the contact would have to engage the emergency release button in order to disengage the keys. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where he was advised that the ignition lock cylinder and remote would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 21,000 and the current mileage was 27,920. updated 05/25/11 *bf updated 1/5/12 *cn

The key to my 2006 hhr would not come out of the ignition. as a result the automatic headlights would not go out and the vehicle could not be locked. this happened while i was traveling, which put my personal safety at risk and if i left my vehicle for any reason it could have easily been stolen. i have been online and found that several other owners have experienced this problem. *tr
