We have classified the 433 complaints from 2006 Chevrolet HHR about STEERING into the following categories.
When pulling out of a parking space the "power steering" warning flashed on my dashboard and the steering became very hard. after stopping the car and turning off the engine and checking under the hood i found i was unable to locate the power steering system. upon restarting the car the light went off and the steering was fine. after several days the light came back on and the same problem steering occurred. this happened while on the highway. i researched online how to resolve and this became a recurring issue in forums that people had with the power steering system constantly turning off and needing to be reset. this problem has since sped up in occurrence since then. *tr
Car suddenly loses power steering. shutting off the car allows the power steering to reset and work again but it loses the power steering again at random times. most of the time it only works for 30 seconds, sometimes the entire trip in the car, and other times it cuts off in the middle of a trip. especially dangerous when it shuts off in the middle of a turn. cobalts and pontiac g5 have had similar problems resulting in a recall. same steering components? *tr
The electric steering will shut down and the message center on the dash will show "power steering" and the vehicle becomes very hard to steer. *tr
As i was exiting the freeway i heard a chime and power steering came on the info panel as i made a turn to find out what was wrong i found turning the wheel to be extremely difficult and as the power assist motor is the same as a recalled motor (chevy cobalt) i feel chevy should recall hhr as well. *tr

Key doesn't come out of ignition, blinkers do not turn off on own. have to manually turn off blinkers. key get stuck in ignition, luckily went online to see about the problem and found hundreds of people with same issue. a quick video showed me that the defect happens to a lot of people and you have to go under the steering column and pop off a cover and manually push a little button to pop the key out of the ignition, the car will continue to run,if you don't do this! *tr
Gear shifter pin broke & now won't lock in gear. the key cannot be removed except by removing a cap on the steering column & pressing a release button. defective gear shifter pin. ------------------------------------- i went home & tried to take my key out but it would not release so since the car would not turn completely off the battery died. i found out on the internet that this has happened to thousands of people. i found out how to remove the plug on the steering column to press the release to take out the key. the gear shifter will not lock so it is easy for it to slip into neutral or out of park & roll away. i don't have the $500 they said it will take to fix it so i have to live with it. i always have to make sure to lock my emergency brake & have to hit the release to take my key out. this is dangerous & so wrong of gm not to recall this when so many have had this problem. this is their defect & not the customers. *tr

2006 chevy hhr :: problem :: power steering message on dash and hard to steer, abs light on, transmission making car buck while driving, and speedometer is bouncing. this is the second time it has happened, last time dealer found only "communication codes" and did not fix anything so nothing was covered by the extended warranty. that was 9 months ago at 50140 miles. *kb
Gm has recalled the cobalt and other cars built between 2005 and 2010 with a power steering problem. the power steering in my hhr is built on the same platform with the same parts . but gm did not include the hhr . they did sent a letter to 2006 hhr canadian owners to fix the problem . why not in the us? the power steering stops operating and the steering becomes very hard. you have to stop and turn the car off to reset the steering. then it happens again with no warning. there are a lot of hhr's with this problem . very unsafe. again, they will fix the cars in canada but not in the usa ? they are the exact same cars.
The electric power steering has failed intermittently over the past months since july 4, 2011. the first incident was on july 4, 2011 when the power steering failed on a family trip almost causing an accident at 65 mph. there have been up to a dozen instances since with the latest being on oct 2, 2011 causing my wife to run off the interstate into the median. gm claims there is no recall, however there are recalls for the same exact electric power steering motors for the cobalts from gm. the hhr's need to be a part of this recall as the motor is the same exact one as the cobalt. please recall these also before someone gets hurt or worse. the internet sites are filled with complaints on this issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving, the power steering would go out at any time and the warning light would illuminate on the instrument panel. the dealer was notified, but did not assist with repairs to the failure. the manufacturer was not notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 103,000 and the current mileage was 105,000.
During the cold months of the year, spring i have no problem with the steering. during the hotter months of the year my power steering notification on my dash board comes up and i have no power steering. i have to turn the car off to reset the steering motor. regardless of how fast i drive the indicator comes on and i have to turn the car off numbers of times to reset the steering motor. it's becoming more and more frequent, i bought the car used and would like to get the electric steering motor replaced. i understand that there are recalls pending on this vehicle in canada as well as chevy cobalts in the u.s. have the same problem. the cobalts are getting fixed at no charge to the customer, but the hhr has not been included in the recall for a defective part. i strongly believe this a serious safety issue. *tr

On my way to work i slowed down to change lanes to make a right hand turn to a parking lot. all of a sudden there was a major jolt and my foot was knocked off the gas pedal. the last thing i remember was looking down at my right foot and seeing it under the brake pedal and thinking i need to move my foot. i remember the emergency room for a moment when i asked them not to cut my clothes. my next memory is for a moment in icu and then i woke up in a hospital room a week later. according to the police report, the car crossed the two westbound lanes and hit a sign and fence, jumped the curb, and then hit shrubbery and several headstones at a memorial sales business. police estimated my speed at 50 mph? i think the airbag deployed while i was driving. possibly the ignition shut down causing the jolt and deployment. the car was totaled and i was disabled in this accident. i am unable to return to work. according to gm i am not eligible for a settlement because my airbag deployed. what difference does that make if the ignition caused the accident? *tr
I was driving my wifes car to the gm dealership to have the recall on the ignition switch repaired, as i entered the cloverleaf exiting the interstate the power steering failed, i made it to the dealership, left the car running and showed the servive manager what it did, he felt of the steering and agreed the power steering was bad, he checked and said it was not under a recall. after some research i found that the cobalt has a recall for the same thing. *tr
I was driving and just when i was on a curved street my car let me know that there was a problem with the power steering. i needed to act fast to avoid an accident due to the fact that i was on a curved street. i never had problem with this electric system until that day. after this, i have been driving my car for one week. the car still doing the same every day, but the main problem is that it happens randomly, so you can;t predict when you will start having a power steering problem. once you turn of the car and turn it on again system works well for a while. again, you will never know when it will start having the problem. hopefully i will go to check the system and fixed as soon as possible. i'm not sure if there is any replacement for this part in which i can be confident that it will never happen again. *tr

Something is very wrong here! over the past few years i have had the power steering fail on three instances! the last one, just a couple of weeks ago occurred while pulling out of parallel parking space at about 10 mph. almost hit the car 2 spaces in front of me! why was there a recall back in 2010 for the cobalts with the same ps motor and not the hhr? now the current recall does not include the earlier hhrs? gm has tried to hide these and other issues. i believe nhtsa was ineffective and complacent due to government ownership status and trying to protect their investment. if the real truth were known, head would roll and people imprisoned! *tr
Power steering completely went out while driving with kids in the car. *tr
There is agm recall for the ps on chevy hhr's but only for the 2009-2010 model years. i have a 2006 hhr and am having the same problem with my steering with the steering light coming on all the time. now i have replaced the power steering motor as gm recommended and thje steering light still comes on everyday 3 4 or 5 times and i loose power steering while it is on. this is a safety issue and i feel that the 2006 model year should be part of that recall. *js

While driving on the freeway i hear a ding ding noise and an indication light comes on saying power steering. i am making my way off the freeway and in the middle of the off ramp my power steering goes out making it almost impossible to turn. i pull into a gas station and turn off the car calling aaa for road side assistance. i had stopped suddenly in the middle of the gas station as i was scared, so i had to re park the car. i turned the car back on and the power steering came back on so i cancelled aaa and i started making my way back home when.... ding ding power steering indication again and as im pulling off again power steering goes out making it impossible to get off the free way safely!!! my car is now parked in the driveway until i can afford to fix it and in the mean time have no car. ive been told its the defaulty eps motor made in china and it is going out on all chevy hhrs but still have not been recalled. i have read thousands of complaints about the same issue as mine after this has happened to me. not only has my power steering gone out but also my struts, brakes, roters and ball joints!! the gm warrenty does not cover any of these things so its all coming out of my pocket! i have all the reciepts for everything but have no recall on this 2006 chevy hhr yet?? why, read the reviews and compliants there are several saftey issues with this car. i have owned chevys 15 years and i have never had so many issues. ya also so purchased a chevy aveo dont even go there bought new broke down in the first month. chevy hhr is an un safe vehicle and chevy is going to loose by treating consumers this way. *tr
Chevy hhr sudden loss of electric power steering. gm has a recall in canada? but not in us? *tr
1. i was turning into a parking spot when my 2006 chevy hhr had the power steering come on the console and then the steering became very hard. 2. after shutting car off for a bit, it fixed the problem, but was back 20 miles down the road. 3. i have investigated that while this is a problem for the hhr, it is not included with the gm cars recalls. i guess they don't care about the hhr drivers. please let me know if there is anything i can do.... i don't feel i should have fix this safety issue. *tr
Power steering failed on 2006 chevy hhr lt1. dealer states power steering motor for cobalt has been recalled, so not sure why the hhr has not been recalled. *tr
The power steering in my 2006 chevy hhr randomly stops working. the dash light says "power steering" when this happens. this happens two or three times a week on average. this problem has occurred twice while turning almost causing me to crash into retaining walls on the highway on ramps. this seems to be a common problem with the hhr. a temporary fix for this issue is to turn the car off and then back on. the problem will return at random times. chevrolet recalled cobalt's that had the same problem. i can not understand why chevrolet won't issue a recall on this very serious safety problem. *tr
Chevrolet hhr 2006. power steering warning displays on the info display indicating that the power steering has failed. steering becomes somewhat difficult especially at slower speeds. power steering functionality resumes once ignition is turned off and back on. power steering will eventually fail again at random intervals. *tr
Power steering light comes on and lose power steering ability. normal driving conditions. no excessive turning. turn off car and it will be fine for a few miles and then do it again. unable to steer vehicle very well when this happens. *tr
The vehicle is a 2006 chevy hhr with approximately 46000 miles. the electric power steering goes out as i am driving and it is very difficult to steer. when this happens during a turn it is very dangerous, and i have almost run into other vehicles. after restarting it usually works, but is subject to going out again at any moment without warning. i contacted chevrolet, but they denied knowledge of the problem although the cobalt has the same electric steering and a recall has been issued. having researched on the internet, i have seen numerous other complaints, and i see no reason for chevy to wait until a serious accident occurs to recall these vehicles. *tr
Power steering goes out while driving down the road. if you stop turn off ignition then restart it will work again for a period of time then go out again. i called my dealer about the problem and they said it is common but there are no recalls. they stated that they would have to replace the whole steering column. i would have to pay for it.but keep my receipt to be reimbursed if there is a recall . is anything being done about this problem? i watched a program last night were this is happening not just to the hhr but also the cobalt, and pt cruiser. why is the hhr not included in the recalls? they showed on the show that people are dyeing from this. one mother lost 2 daughters. my dealer says they know there is a problem but wont do anything about it. what can i do? *tr

2006 chevrolet hhr steering motor randomly fails with no warning, causing the power steering to fail while driving. after restart, will work again for brief time. happens frequently. vehicle has less than 30,000 miles. documentation exists online that this motor is the same one recalled on the chevrolet cobalt, and that other are having the same failure. has happened approximately 10-12 times over two weeks and a total mileage of about 40 miles. *tr
While driving the car the power steering light comes on and makes turning almost impossible and dangerous when happening on the highways. it is now happening all of the time and i have only made one payment on the car!!!!!!!!!!! *tr

Driving with cruise control on, weather very nice and road dry around 7-7:30pm on familiar road. car had been pulling to the right for about a week. had son check tires before leaving newark oh and heading home. all of a sudden the vehicle went off road totaled car and i was in hospital for 2 1/2days. had been knocked out, seat belt rubbed neck to almost bleeding, air bag burned hole in sleeve of coat. no broken bones but very shaken up. i want to know if this was caused by the steering problem that has been been on recall. have pictures of the car and the road to show how the tire marks abruptly turn to the right.
