When driving the steering wheel will lock up and i can not turn.power steering warning message appear in the dash panel. this occurs when driving on the highway or anywhere i'm driving
When driving my power steering shuts off and the light pops on however when i turn car off and back on it works again for a few minutes. i was driving on a city street and turned and it shut off and i almost hit a pole because of this thank god my 3 year old was not with me this time
While driving the power steering shut down and dangerously went into manual mode. upon stopping and starting the p.s. worked for 5 minutes then it went out again. only 151k miles.
I was heading out to my car and tried to remote start my car and it did t work and i tried it twice and then got in my car and notice my check engine light and power steering came on after i put the car in gear and began moving and i stopped and when i went to turn it was hard to turn and had to use to hands and i did research and this a know problem and the remotes and this power steering issue should be recalled or it may hurt or kill someone
Electric power steering malfunctioning causing power steering to shut off while operating vehicle at highway speeds. should be a recall for this. all models but hhr were recalled for this issue
The power steering fails while driving anywhere, when you shut the car off, it resets itself. this has happened a few times and now my mechanic read the codes and it said to replace the steering column
Power testing motor can fail randomly and at any time causing the car to revert to manual steering control and increasing chances of a crash. defective is the power steering motor controller and or the torque angle sensor! wife was mid-turn when power steering failed and she almost ran into a tree. 16 year old daughter was driving and veered into oncoming traffic when power steering motor failed while she wasn't in a turn.
Power steering goes out while driving if i pull over and turn car off then back on power steering will come back on but only for a couple minuted
Driving down the road and warning sound comes on and power steering goes across the digital dash saying power steering then power steering goes out. some one is going to be killed unless it's recalled. have read several complaints if the same thing. i just purchased this car 3 weeks ago. i carry 3 kids with me
Power steering warning light comes on while driving and difficult to steer. resets when ignition turned off and back on, however repeatedly happens every few blocks while driving. this is dangerous and there is a recall for later 2009-2010...why not for all years?
My 2006 hhr lost power steering. the light came on and it took all i had to steer it. everytime i cut it all off and crank it back up the light will go off and i can drive it for about a minute to 5 minutes usually in the light saying power steering will come on and the steering issue will occur again. i love my hhr and this is my first chevrolet product but i really think there should be a recall due to the fact that after much much research i have found that the hhr as well as other chevrolet vehicles have hundreds to thousands of people with the same exact complaint. the power steering light would come on and they would lose all power steering. this should not be a cost that us who have purchased and put our trust of safety into chevrolet to have to bare. this can be extremely dangerous and can actually lead to vehicle fatalities due to the power steering going out. chevrolet should be responsible for the repairs of the power steering due to it being a known fact based on very much research and complaints from so many owners. this fact shows and proves that it is the fault of the way the car was designed or built or faulty parts used by chevrolet/gm. please consider the danger that this fault can cause to owners and do a recall to have these issues repaired so that it doesn't end up causing more damage or taking a life because someone loses control of there chevrolet due to faulty parts. thank you, [xxx] from halifax virginia information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Every couple weeks while driving my car, there will be a ding sound with a message indicating power steering failure. i have to pull over and keep turning it on and off. eventually it seems to reset itself and work again. i cannot steer it at all when it fails and is at times hard to get off the road in time before it locks up. it is very dangerous since i have to drive on a highway to get to work.
I have had a terrible time with the power steering on my 2006 chevy hhr. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. there is no apparent cause. these changes from working to not working and back can happen at any time at any speed. fortunately i am strong enough to wrestle with it and steer it manually so far. i received a notice from gm about it but the dealer refused to honor it. they replaced the power steering motor and charged me over $300, but that didn't do any good. also twice a message appeared about reduced engine power and the engine had almost no power to get up hills. i was creeping along at about 10 mph on a super highway. i shut off the engine, turned it on again after a few minutes and the engine had normal power again. also the door lock light comes on for no apparent reason when i'm driving. the dealer claims that the problems can't be diagnosed unless they see it acting up. of course it doesn't do these things when it is in the shop. i am really disgusted.
A chip had to be replaced for the power steering to work.also the driver visor keeps falling down and blocking my view when driving.
While driving in town or on freeway the power steering alert will come on the display readout and there is an automatic loss of the power steering. power steering comes back after the car has been turned off, but only for a few seconds then repeats the loss. it has been doing that every day since 12/05/2017.
Electric steering motor stops working after 3 -5 minutes of driving, and remains inoperable for duration of the drive. will restart after ignition is cycled, then will repeat this scenario, there is no warning when this will occur and is very hard to turn, making for some very dangerous situations
The power steering keeps "clicking off" seems like an electrical issue but there are no fuses blown. if i turn the car off the power steering will reset but as soon as i turn it back on the power steering will turn off again. it quit for awhile but now its back in full force. i basically have no power steering now.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. while driving 35 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. there were no recalls on the vehicle. the vin was not provided. the failure mileage was 90,000.
Power steering goes out randomly when driving, instrument cluster also mentions something about the power steering as well. this has happened several times while driving and can be dangerous for elderly folks. you have to stop and restart your car to get your power steering working again so it has to be an electrical issue
Power steering constantly goes while driving. there will be a ding and it will just cut out... why doesn't this have an recall on it????? its seriously dangerous. took it to dealer it will cost over 500 to fix. i can barely driving it a block without the power steering going out. it starts 4 mins after driving car... please help and fix!!! this is dangerous.
Vehicle losses power steering shortly after starting to drive. car is in motion when this happens. much harder to control causing a serious hazard to operation.
When driving a click can be heard in the footwell of the drivers seat. a chime and dic alert occurs. the dic displays power steering. the vehicles power steering system stops working. this makes the car very hard to drive at any speed. after restarting the engine the power steering system works as normal for a period of time before it fails again. this issue was recalled on later model year vehicles of this type but the 2006 model was excluded. further investigation details that the 2006 model and newer cars share the same potentially defective or dangerous electronic power steering motor.
My power steering light keeps coming on. i shut car off and cars power steering works fine. i drive it for a bit and the light come back making it difficult and dangerous to drive.
After start up the electronic steering motor intermittently goes out and can make steering very difficult.
Power steering failed causing dangerous driving condition. sudden change in ability to control vehicle. start vehicle and has power steering for a few minutes then goes out while driving.
The power steering goes out when you are driving it,and you have to pull over and switch the car off,and wait a few minutes and restart the car.
The electric power steering will go out while driving for no apparent reason. the light will light up on the dash stating power steering failure. sometimes when i am in a curve the power steering will go out making it difficult to control the car in a curve because it's not expected. i can be driving down the interstate and it will just go out. i will have to stop the car and shut the car off and restart it and it will be fine for a little while and then it will go out again, and will have to repeat the cycle of stopping and shutting the car off or continue to drive without a power steering unit, which i have to do most of the time since i drive a lot on the interstate. i have read that a lot of people with this same car has experienced the same issues and i don't understand why general motors have not recalled these cars and replaced these defective power steering units.
Power steering went out. message indicated power steering on dash. i paid dealer$1000 to replace steering column.
Power steering loss.happen about 6 different times.this car is driven by a senior 76.and car only has 23400 miles.doesn"t seem right that that should be happening was backing out of a drive way last time and couldnt get it to steer was very hard.happened last time on oct.21,2016
Power steering problem shutting off and on.
My air bag service light comes on and my power steering dont work while this air bag service light is on. my heat dont work either while my air bag service light is on. i can drive it for awhile and when my air bag light goes off my power steering starts to work and my heat does too.

Takata recall. power steering goes out on my 2006 hhr while driving down the highway. can pull over and kill the engine and restart the car and it will work fine again for a few miles then the power steering message will comes across message board and ding then it goes out again. it has been doing this for about a month now and it first started when the heat index started to get really high. it started off only occasionally doing it, but now it's more frequent. have scheduled an appointment with dealer to have service tech look at it.

I was driving home from work, and was taking a left turn to enter the highway, when all of a sudden i heard a ding ding ding from the car. my dash lit up a warning that said power steering and the steering wheel locked up. it became nearly impossible to steer, and i ended up on the side of the road, in a field. thank goodness i didnt get into a major accident. and thank goodnes my 1 and a half year old daughter wasn't with me at the time, and was already safe at home!!

While driving the steering get hard and i am unable to make normal turns. this happens at slow speeds and highway speeds.
Power steering fails suddenly, making the car impossible to steer. this has happened in heavy traffic and on the freeway at higher speed. other hhr's have been recalled for this problem but not the 2006 models. i've read other 2006 owners complaining of this same problem. i've checked the fuses and cannot find any reason for this problem. if i turn the ignition off, then restart the car the steering works fine for about 5 minutes before the steering goes out again. this problem started about 5 months ago, about may 2016. at first it occurred randomly, but now happens every time i drive it. speed has no bearing on the problem as i can be driving 20 mph or 70 mph. i currently have 149,580 miles on this car. i've had the recalled ignition replaced twice and i'm wondering if this problem is related as the power steering is electric. i've had several close calls and feel the car is too dangerous to drive.
Vehicle has 111,000 miles and twice in the past two days the power steering error in the dic came on during low speed cornering. both times the power steering was working normally until the turn and was very difficult to turn under manual mode. a reset of the car restored power steering albit temporarily.
I took my 2006 hhr to the dealership for repairs on a tail light and fuses. when i picked it up it was sitting in the parking lot. i started the car. went to drive away and i had no power steering. i went in side and had to leave my car again. it took 2 weeks for them to work on my car. the whole steering column had to be replaced to fix the steering module.
It started a couple months ago, you would hear a beeping sound then a message on the dash, it will say "power steering" then the power steering would not be working, it started once a week then once a day now it happens every single time you drive the car.
We keep hearing a ding, ding, ding, and the instrument cluster reads out power steering as we lose our power steering and it becomes very difficult to turn the wheels. this keeps happening every so many days and i have changed the 60 amp fuse. but it seems that if i pull over and shut off the car and restart it the power steering works once again. it is very frustrating and dangerous in traffic. i called our mechanic and he said he will not work on electronic steering systems. that doesn't give me much comfort as it appears i would have to go to the dealer and guess it might be a big deal and very expensive. but other than that, we have been very happy with our car these last 10 years.
Twice the power steering stopped and the car was extremely hard/impossible to steer. first time was when parking and after having the engine off for and hour i started it up and everything was fine, so did not work thought it was just a fluke. second time was going around a curve on an onramp to an interstate highway and the steering acted almost like it locked, no control hit a light pole and car is damaged extensively.
While driving this vehicle, the power steering light flashes on dash board and i lose all the function of the power steering. it has now happened 4 separate times in two weeks, the last when i was turning a corner and nearly hit a car on the side of the road because i could not steer the vehicle. i have a safety recall letter from general motors stating that i had to pay out of pocket to fix and then they would determine if it fell under there recall. when the letter states to bring it to the dealership should the power steering light ever comes on the dash panel, which it has done know 4 times when the power steering failed. i could been killed if i had been going faster or killed some one. this is an issue with the gm faulty mechanics. first it was the ignition having to give my vehicle up for nearly 6 weeks to have it fixed. this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed by general motors and paid for by general motors, not the consumer. what is it going to take, another death because of the mistakes. even after they notified me that is a safety issue via letter, but i first pay out of pocket and then determine if they will reimburse me for it. the first time i was in downtown la going to work and once again when i turned left while driving, the second on the 405 in rush hour traffic, just as i was accelerating and changing lanes, the light flashed on the dash board (power steering) and i lost all power steering capability. the third was the week of february 15, 2016. turning left again and the fourth time just yesterday again when i turned left.
Power steering comes up in messsge center over 10 mph. steering is very hard. when you turn the motor off and restart it resets. over 10 mph power steering comes up again. brought it to local dealership and diagnostic test done but test comes up with no problems. gm recalled only the 2010 hhr for this problem, not the other year models. i purchased my 2006 hhr new in december 2005.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. while driving 35 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn intermittently before failing completely. the contact also stated that the low beam headlights failed. the contact stated that the bulbs were replaced, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where it could not be diagnosed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 151,000.
Gm says drivers will instantly know if the electric power steering system fails because a chime and dashboard message will appear. the car can be steered without power assist, but it can require a lot more muscle to turn the wheel, especially at low speeds. because of the difficulty, the car could be more susceptible to a crash. our vehicle was in motion on a city street when suddenly, we lost all power steering. other makes and models with the same equipment has been recalled already. when shutting off the vehicle and restarting, the power steering is restored briefly and will fail again while driving.
The steering wants to lock up and don't return to the straight position when turning on to a street as if it is sticking clicking and popping noise also in the steering column. also both fuel lines over the left rear wheel rusted out and leaked gas all over the garage floor. costing two hundred and fifty dollars.
