Problems with 2013 Chevrolet Equinox ENGINE

On average, the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 93 933 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

I have 2013 chevrolet equinox...i received a letter from gm with a new warranty for excessive oil consumption. i have been having this issue for a year now. so upon receiving the new special coverage adjustment that has stipulations 7 years 6 months or 120,000... i received letter in january 2020 took my vehicle to gm dealer and was turned away because of mileage. i am not understanding why gm would put stipulations on engine parts that will damage my engine. now my issue is that this issue was not just created gm know they are responsible for these vehicles piston wearing out at a certain point but will not cover vehicles that is over 7 years 6 months or 120,000.

Driving on a road at 50mph the engine lost power slowed down and both the check engine light and stabiltrack light came message saidstabiltrac needs service. i had engine work done just two weeks ago

Engine is burning oil at an alarming rate. every 1,000 miles there will be no oil on the dip stick. no warning light has came on stating my oil is low. i could have blown my engine multiple times if i didn't check my oil regularly. this is not safe. i bought this car from a dealership 5 months ago and have already had to get 3 oil changes bc of the excessive amount of oil loss plus have had to add oil in between.

Twice in 3 yrs this car has been in the shop for a major engine issue with water getting in the valves this was detected when the check engine light came and the car is the shop for over a week each time.

My car went through all 5 quarts of oil after one month. i put 2 quarts in to tide over h til i drove directly to the oil change place to have a top off. the engine burned up 2 quarts in a 15 minute (20 mile) drive. when they checked my dip stick was empty. i am having no external leaks and my car keeps dying while driving.

I was driving on the interstate at 75 mph with cruse control. all of a sudden with no notice i heard a loud pop and the car started jerking and vibrating real bad. when i pulled over to the side of the road the inside was full of smoke and smelt like burnt oil. after looking under the car there was alot of oil dripping out and behind me. i was able to get to a gas station that was about a mile away but going about 15 mph and sounded like a riding lawnmower and jerked the whole time.

Excessive oil consumption and loose timing chain. had timing chain replaced at 93,500 miles. engine burns oil; is not leaking anywhere. this is a very common problem with this year's engine - 2.4l ecotech. chevy needs to recall these! thankfully, caught issues before anything serious happened. also had crack on boot for one spark plug causing oil to leak into there. had all spark plugs replaced while replacing timing chain.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal grinding sound coming from the engine. the vehicle was parked and the inspected. the contact stated that there was a pool of oil underneath the vehicle. the contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle the next day, the check engine and service engine warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the lower seal rear seal had melted which caused the oil. the contact was informed that the rear main seal needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was towed to friendly chevrolet located at (7501 hwy 65 ne, fridley, mn 55432, (612) 276-2955) to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 126,000. *bf*jb

Fell victim to the pcv valve freezing this weekend and blew out the rear main seal on my equinox. was leaving the highway when vehicle stuttered and almost stalled into oncoming traffic at bottom of exit. luckly it gained power back to avoid and accident. got home and looked the car over to find oil sprayed all over the bottom of the car. no oil lights or indicators came on to let me know the oil was gone from the car. the dipstick was dry and now i'm stuck with a $1600 bill to replace a $30 seal. car is in the shop to see if the rest of the motor survived or if it needs a rebuild and a new timing chain from the damages caused. i didn't even know there was a service bulletin for this issue but i was told my car vin wasn't involved in the issue. yet it has the same problem as those that were. car is already using about 2 quarts of oil every 1000 miles due to faulty gm piston rings that aren't in a recall hopefully the class action lawsuit helps equinox owners with unnecessary expenses. with a known issue like this gm should just replace the motors with a new improved one and save their customer base while they can. will be calling gm in the morning to get the runaround like everyone else i'm sure.

I was driving my 2013 chevy equinox and it started making a loud diesel truck type of noise on a highway going about 60 mph after around 15 minutes of driving in 1 weather. i made it to my destination and turned it off. it sat for about 4 hours in a parking lot before trying to restart it and it started for less than a minute before dying. i added 3 quarts of oil to it and it sounded slightly better. then i moved to a different spot to make sure it wasnt leaking oil which it was not before letting it sit for another 4 hours. later in the day i turned it on to get it home to sit as the dealership couldn't get it in for a week, and when i put it in reverse to check for more oil under it there was about a quart worth of oil that had sprayed all over the ground and under my car. it leaked oil the entire way back to my home about 25 minutes away and left a trail of oil up my driveway. chevy has recalled the part that is broken on my vehicle and model year but will not repair it due to it not being associated with my vin.

Vehicle constantly smells like gas. also is not telling me when it is low on oil and over consumption of motor oil. i have oil changes done regularly and have almost run completely out of oil 2 times in last 5 months!

Our equinox has had a check engine light come on stating the oil level is low. since we checked tsb's and had the dealer scan it and found excess consumption of oil was do to, camshaft position and timing system. this caused are vehicle to stall out in stationary locations. we asked chevy to fix the issue but no recalls have been volunteered. we've had these issues since purchasing the vehicle march 2019.

I took my car into my local chevy dealership due to a check engine light, and it was determined that my exhaust manifold is cracked. after doing research online, this has been a long-term, ongoing issue with this model. as exhaust fumes can leak into the passenger compartment through the vent system (as i was informed by the service technician who told me of the problem), and it has apparently been an ongoing problem for years, i believe this is a safety issue that should merit a recall. my father, who has been an automotive mechanic for most of his life, has told me that this should not happen in a car that is only 6 years old. there would seem to be either a material, or design, flaw that is causing this to happen.

Blown engine. large oil consumption

The truck would cut off at red lights and stop signs and it has started was oil.

While driving engine completely shutoff with no warning on a busy highway blocking traffic lights did not dim or anything. something needs to be done about this engine . timing. was the issue due to burning so much oil.

Irregular oil consumption and engine problems leading to further repair and continuous diagnosis. vehicle currently has a mileage of 127,871 and original owner of vehicle. since february 2019, engine diagnosis is required between oil changes do to low idle and check engine light. vehicle has stalled while stopped at traffic lights, but stalling has not yet occurred at slow speeds. dealership has found oil engine level low, causing the timing chains to stretch and creating noise. performed engine performance restoration service to clean piston rings and changed oil and filter; reset oil life and cleared codes. dealership recommended to return in 1,000 miles to re-evaluate oil level and perform internal engine repairs. past repairs included cam, timing belt, and catalytic converter,

The car is having oil consumption problems and makes very loud noises when starting up and idling. i took it to my dealer and was told it probably had piston ring wear and will probably need a new engine due to oil blockage. the car only had 61000 miles and had always been serviced by the dealer for all maintenance on time. i am very disappointed with action from chevy on the problem because the car had been very well taken of and we like the car overall. i just can't afford to replace engines due to poor manufacturing. my dealer had been no help and just acts like it's normal to replace a engine due to oil consumption problems,. i have research a few forums and have found alot of equinox owners are experiencing the same problems. i always loved chevy but if i have a choice i will never buy again. thanks

Get away with motor oil bad. this isn't the only equinox doing this. don't know where it is coming from or going.

My engine light came on while driving my equinox 2013, car started stalling and running rough, the car starts up, however cut off at the traffic stop, i had my car diagnosed.odometer 166,388; which needed timing chain set, timing solenoid and cam shaft, and variable valve. cam sensor, in addition in between oil changes by the dealership, i also, have to add oil my car uses excessive amount, i thought i had a great suv, i even recommended and spoke highly of my equinox, please look into this issue and resolve these problems.

The engine burns oil in between oil changes, the car shakes and stalls. the timing chain is broken, my husband replaced the exhaust manifold due to cracking. this car nickle and dimes you. i'm very shocked that this has not been a recall or anything. now i am putting my self more in debt because i cannot afford to fix this issue. the car will need a new engine due to all the issues that have been happening. it stalled on me at a traffic light thank god my husband had followed me home from my job. i have read that this is not the first time this has happened. you would think gm would fix this issue. and the warranty that was given with my vehicle was up over a year ago. i tried trading the vehicle in and no dealership that i went to wanted it and they said chevrolet equinox's have this issue all the time. i wish i would have done more research before i got the car. i really loved the vehicle until all the stuff that has been happening to it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet equinox. while driving various speeds, the vehicle unintentionally shut off and the tire traction and engine warning indicators illuminated. the failure occurred consistently. the vehicle was turned off and restarted. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for an oil change and the contact was informed that metal shavings were found inside the oil. the vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the camshaft position sensor, fuel pump intake exhaust, and camshaft all needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 132,000.

I purchased a 2013 chevy equinox at tom wood subaru on 5/27/2019 it was free of recalls stated by the car fax. since i have had the vehicle i have been loosing oil and there is a slight knocking sound. i checked the oil and to my surprise there was no oil nor did i receive a light on my vehicle stating low oil. i immediately went and had someone take me to get oil and had to put 3 liters in my car. i went and had an oil change at hare chevrolet and 2 weeks after i noticed the sound again and checked my oil and again it showed no oil on the dipstick and no low oil light came on. i contacted hare chevrolet and they advised me that there was a car brought in last week with the same issues i am calling about and it cost between $1400-3000 to fix. i just paid $60 for an oil change and had to purchase more oil to put in my suv. i called chevy customer service and told them about the issue and was advised they couldn't help me and i would need to pay out of pocket to get this fixed. i am frustrated because there are 100,000 complaints regarding this same issue and nothing is being done. obviously with this many cars having the same issue a recall should of been made and still hasn't.

I was on the highway and my engine started running rough. then at the stop light it completely cut off and did not start. when i towed it to the mechanic he said there was no oil in my car. i am very good at my oil changes.the engine light did not give me warnings. i had to replace the gasket rings and other parts. $1900. now the intake sensor has to be replaced for the second time. the check engine light will not go off. the mechanic says it is the same code and these engines are problematic. my car still cuts off very frequently at stop signs and lights. i i would like to also note that i had to replace the manifold. it cracked

I have contacted my local dealership and been denied replacement of my pistons. i bought my vehicle april 2019 before it was even due for its first oil change it was extremely low. i started the oil change testing with the local dealership which i thought caused my car to disable itself because it's burning over a quart every thousand miles. because my vin number has yet to reach the dealership they refused to help me. has put me in severe danger. i know they're waiting for a special coverage action for the 2013 liter motor mine was manufactured february 2013. the new motors without this problem were built in may 2013. i would greatly appreciate any help that you could offer me i have a vehicle that i just pop by that february 2013. the new motors without this problem were built in may 2013. i would greatly appreciate any help that you could offer me i have a vehicle that i just fault and it's unsafe to drive. the dealership refuses to help me.

The engine oil consumption is 5 to 6 quarts of oil in 3000 miles. this often results in violent vehicle jerking, as well as stability and power reduction, resulting in the engine power to be reduced causing potential collisions in traffic. this can occur and has occurred both when stopping and while in motion.

The vehicle has had a random bucking motion (as if you ran something over) since i purchased. the garage says they can't find anything. it has manifested to a check engine light, the vehicle randomly shutting down, oil consumption beyond (2.5 qts) in two weeks. all i am told is that this is known problem with the equinox and it is probably the pistons, the cam sensor and likely $3-4,000 to repair. how is it, that this is a known problem and we as consumers have to pay twice to own their product? shutting down while driving, without any warning lights, oil low without warning lights... not a safety issue??? gm, what's wrong with you? no integrity, that's for sure. from the volume of the same complaints, why is this not a recall. gm clearly messed up on this one. done venting as this won't pay for a new car. don't buy an equinox!

I purchase this vehicle in 2015, from rick hendrick chevrolet in norfolk, va. less than one year, i brought my vehicle in for service because the oil was burning at a high rate. i had to put oil in my car every 700 miles. the dealership told me that the car was ok and just keep putting oil in the vehicle. i continue to take my vehicle in for normal maintenance oil changes etc. in may 2019, would not start and i had the car towed to the dealership and was told that the engine cylinder piston rings were bad and that i needed a new engine at a cost fo $5700.00. in january 2020, i received a letter from gmc regarding a class action settlement and claim form. in the letter it stated that gmc was extending warranty however. i called gmc and was told my car didn't meet the parameters. the dealership or gmc will not honor their agreement based on some loop hole. see the documentations.

I backed out of a parking space and the motor stopped. check engine shut off. check engine light came on. had it checked, intake cam accutator solonid valve curcit failed. it happened several tims before i could get home.

Original owner of vehicle. burns through full oil constantly while driving. have to carry oil in car and check often. there is currently class action lawsuit over this issue as it is happening way to many cars for it to be a coincidence. our other 2013 chevy malibu also is having this problem and ruined the engine before car loan was even paid off. this issue could cause the engine to stall while driving.

85k miles and using 3 quarts of oil within 2000 miles. vehicle stalls while driving. there have been similar issues with 2011 and 2012 where service bulletins and extended coverage have been added. driving vehichle and the engine stalls. had to stop and restart. garage determined it was 3 quarts low on oil since my oil change 2,000 miles ago

I have a 2013 chevy equinox, 2.4l with a huge oil consumption problem. my engine light is on, and the vehicle stall intermittently if i'm sitting at a stop light, and i often have challenges starting it back up. i purchased this car about 6 months ago, and being a single father of two, i don't have the financial resources for repairs.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet equinox. ever since the vehicle was purchased, the contact noticed that the oil consumption was very high (approximately one quart per week). the contact drove the vehicle to hennessy gmc/chevrolet (7261 jonesboro rd, morrow, ga 30260) where it was diagnosed that the oil pressure sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 167,522.

Vehicle is using excessive amounts of oil between oil changes. the vehicle has always been very well maintained and only has 85,000 miles on it. the vehicle now dies or stalls and is inoperable. i have noted hundreds of complaints about this issue and a prior recall for earlier model years. a service bulletin was published but vehicle owners were never informed of the well known issue. i now have a vehicle that is worthless after buying it new in 2013.

Burns excessive oil which causes catalytic converter to clog and exhaust manifold to crack and fumes develop in cabin

2013 2lt equinox 2.4l fwd 67000 miles issues: oil consumption issues, uses 2 qts + between oil changes, started at 50k miles, quoted over $2000 to replace pistons, rings, and timing chain (known issue on 2.4l eco-tec motors, oil and filter always changed on or before time due with dexos 1 valvoline oil and ac delco filter). possibility of breakdown, engine failure. recommended replacement of clogged catalytic converter due to oil consumption issue: $800 faulty exhaust manifold starting at 55k miles, cracked, leaking fumes into passenger area, quoted $600 to replace plus recommend replacing engine mounts to prevent future failure: $1000 (known issue on 2.4l eco-tec motors). frequent headaches all winter from breathing in exhaust. faulty transmission shifting starting at 50k miles, clunky shifting at low speeds, quoted over $600 for flush, inspection, sensors and seal replacement. faulty front axle seal repaired at 55k miles for $300. getting no where near the advertised and promised 32mpg (average of 22 mpg on hwy trips with eco mode on, 14 mpg in town). lemon lemon lemon lemon lemon lemon lemon lemon lemon!!!!!!!!!

Vehicle has rattling noise when accelorating. creating the car to accelorate slowly.

I have a 2013 chevrolet equinox that has 58000 miles now with the 2.4l engine. i took it to the local chevrolet dealer and they told me it was low on oil. they wanted to preform an oil consumption test on the vehicle and stated it was a known issue and gm is covering the repairs if it fails the test. we drove the vehicle 1500 miles as requested and when we took it back it did in fact fail the oil consumption test as it burned more than a quart of oil in the 1500 miles. we were told the engine has worn pistons and piston rings. a 6 year old car that had 56000 on it prior to the oil consumption test has worn pistons and worn rings? we were told we needed a new engine and that gm would put a new engine in it. a little while later we were called back and told our vin was not included in the extended warranty for the oil consumption. we have spoken with a senior advisor at chevrolet who stated to us that the car is 6 years old and would not last forever. we then asked to speak to that person's supervisor who told us that gm cannot put vehicle vin numbers in for recalls and that they work with the nhtsa to do that. i'm not sure if that is true of if gm is trying to pull one over on me. i asked to speak with that persons supervisor and was flat out told no. i understand that many other chevrolet equinox's with the 2.4l engine have this same issue and gm also refuses to acknowledge them either. since i was told the nhtsa was involved with this i have now notified you. i now have a vehicle that failed gm's own test to determine if a vehicle has a oil consumption problem. once it failed they said the vin is not included and they refuse to take care of it and dropped it in nthsa's lap saying you puts vin numbers in for recalls. any assistance would be appreciated. thank you.

Takata recall. driving car to work, started making a clinking sound about 3 miles down the road i arrived at work. parked the car and oil started pouring out of the rear main seal. got the car towed home. called gm they stated this is a common problem and have fixed over 7 this year.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet equinox. while driving 35 mph, the oil consumption levels would lower without warning. the contact had to add oil in the vehicle four times, which resulted in the oil levels staying the same. the vehicle was taken to bill hood chevrolet (69020 hwy 190 service rd, covington, la 70433, (985)-590-4102) where it was diagnosed that there was abnormal oil consumption levels and the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in any recalls. the failure mileage was 136,000.

Driving on x-way at posted speed (70 mph) faint blue smoke from rear of car (rearview mirror) otherwise driving ok (no check engine light); few miles later on 4-lane at 50mph clattering sound from engine; vehicle stalled at stop lights and was difficult to start; nursed it to chevrolet dealership; as driven into service department vehicle was trailing a steady stream of engine oil; technician diagnosis: the pcv (positive crankcase ventilation valve)was frozen shut thus allowing crankcase pressure to build up ultimately blowing out engine rear main seal; lack of engine lubrication caused timing chain failure and metallic debris was found throughout engine indicating total failure and re-manufactured engine installation required ($7651.87 charged). background data: car parked outside in below freezing temperatures with wind toward grille of car; soaked for about 20hrs before startup and driveaway which went ok; odo miles arriving at dealership 81,986; vehicle serviced regularly at chevy dealerships; vehicle was driven by my wife and did not have any harsh driving circumstances. this was a safety risk for my wife with the engine stalling intermittently and difficult to restart; fortunately complete failure did not occur at 70 mph on expressway. there was a gm service bulletin (14882) covering this same failure scenario (pcv frozen leading to severe engine damage) but gm says my vin # is not covered, no exceptions! this is a pcv system design problem not properly validated in pre-production testing; i am a retired gm engine calibration engineer and can discuss in more detail if needed; the engine replacement cost almost as much as the trade-in value for this vehicle (with an operating engine) https://gm.oemdtc.com/recall/sb-10057977-8108.pdf

Certified pre-owned 2013 chevy equinox purchased in 2015, michigan.winter, 2018. while driving, my vehicle began to lurch while accelerating from a stop. at the next stop, the rpms bean to act erratic, teetering above and below 1000. the vehicle then completely stalled. this occurred several times on my way to my destination. each time, as i accelerated, it lurched and i feared it would stall out. took it into the dealer, they gave me a diagnostic that said spark plugs. car drove ok for a month. then a deep freeze came. same issue occurred. i checked my oil (because these vehicles have a problem with oil consumption) pressurized air blew out of the dipstick, it was also 2 quarts low--i had just gotten my oil changed 4 weeks prior. put some oil in and drove. same issue. stalled at busy intersection stop. got to my destination to discover a trail of oil behind my vehicle. got it towed to dealership. diagnosed as a blown rear main seal due to a frozen pcv valve. this is a well-known issue with equinoxes, enough that there is a service bulletin (14882). my experience/symptoms match the condition description of the bulletin to a t, however, for some reason, my vin does not fall under coverage for this engineering flaw. chevy knows this is a safety issue, yet they still refuse to recall the vehicles. in the meantime, i'm stuck paying an $1800 bill to get the rear main seal fixed--without any regard for the pcv valve, crankcase, or oil consumption issue that contribute to the problem. shame on gm.

The pcv valve is causing an issue with the engine. due to the design it is trapping condensation and throwing it into the air intake and oil. other customers have had damage to their engines due to this flaw. i've had the vehicle stall and die on me while driving. when checking the air intake their is fluid in the manifold which shouldn't happen in a closed system. i've filed a complaint with gm, though many other customers have contacted them with the same issue and have been ignored.

On 2.25.19 while stopped at a red light my car stalled twice when i gave it gas to go, than while trying to back into a parking space it stalled twice. on my way back to work the engine light came on, after a day or two it went out. today 3.5.19 on my way to work i was driving and the lights dimmed and the radio turned off for about a min. or so and when it came back on it was like i had just started the car. after getting gas i started my car and before i put it in gear it stalled out, restarted it and it kept stalling about 6-8 times than finally i turned it on and it didn't hesitate or the dash light dim so i put in gear and it drove ok but i was worried that it might stall when i was making a turn or in the middle of an intersection. this is a very dangerous condition if you are driving and your car just stops in the middle of the road. there was a recall on the 2011 equinox for this same problem and if so many people are having the same problems on other years 2010-2016 noted then there should be a recall on all these years and get this problem fixed. i notice that unless there a number of deaths involved these dealers/manufactors don't do anything about fixing these problems. we spend lots of money on these cars and we should't have to worry if we're going to have an accident in them with our families. the times this has happened it has been in gear or while i am putting it in gear. the 2011 recall 11195a.

Vehicle running very rough and experiencing high oil consumption. engine was clicking when accelerating and jerking back and fourth when slowing to a stop. dealer stated it was clogged pcv. a recall 14882 states this exact issue concerning 2010-2014 chevy equinox with the ecotec 2.4l engine. the dealership and chevy customer care both stated my vin was not under the recall even though it was the same exact problem with the same exact engine and model so i had to pay out of pocket. total cost was approximately $900. this is a known issue and chevy needs to cover this and reimburse for the cost. i have all documentation and a case number with gm on the matter.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the vehicle was leaking engine oil while driving. there were no warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to and independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. a local dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 106,000. consumer received a letter stating that vehicle is covered under a special coverage adjustment for excessive oil consumption due to piston ring wear issues. *dl

Excessively rapid oil consumption defect resulted in engine shutdown and major engine damage. oil pressure warning system did not function (e.g., no oil pressure light indicator). engine began knocking, then vehicle lurching and stalling when transporting to mechanic just before engine failure. repair requires engine replacement (>$5000). dealer refusing to compensate over 10% of repair costs. problem identical to those cited in class action lawsuit for euinox 2010-2017: https://www.classaction.org/chevy-equinox-lawsuit

The vehicle had a recall for the windshield wiper for the rear window. nevertheless, the engine started stalling and when i had diagnostic test done the mechanic explained their were metal shavings going into my oil from a defective engine. the vehicle began to hiccup on the street and stopped in front of my home. i had the vehicle towed to joseph cheverolet in cincinnati were service member told i must be mistaken and that gm had no recalls. i explained he must be mistaken and they could keep their faulty product.

Yet another person with the 2013 chevy equinox 2.4l engine with the excessive oil consumption issue. my wife (who drives this vehicle) called me in tears today, stating that the equinox started making all kinds of noise, and driving horribly, so she went to a nearby garage, and they discovered that the vehicle had almost no oil - and that this was the 2nd or 3rd equinox that they had seen in the last 2-3 weeks that came in with almost no oil. this vehicle has 69,075 miles on it, and we are the original owners. all service (other than today's) have been handled at the dealership that we purchased the vehicle from. very disappointed in gm, after researching this issue, and finding that so many others were having this exact same issue. gm needs to step up and fix this!!
