My 2005 chevy equinox want start sometimes after short trips. it will turn over but want crank (it almost acts like it is flooded). then after about 10 or 20 minutes it will crank like nothing was wrong with it. this is starting to happen all the time now. it is very annoying when this happens. *tr

At approx 130k miles the engine was overheating. upon further investigation it was discovered that the head gasket was cracked. $1,800 to repair. *tr

2005 chevy equinox, replaced head gasket 2 times, blown again. the exhaust and fumes that come out because of this are horrible. the car is not safe to drive and should be recalled, gm is very aware of this problem and refuses to do anything. *tr

The chevy equinox is over-all a piece of garbage. ever since i bought it in 2004 it has given nothing but problems. i bought the vehicle brand new, but i doesn't perform like a brand new vehicle. since i've had this vehicle it has over heated on me, the ac system had to be repaired, the gage lights keep coming on as if something is wrong with the vehicle, when i drive on the express way and hit 60 mph the steering wheel start shaking when as i'm braking, the one belt that the equinox has snapped while i was driving, and three weeks after i got the belt fixed as i was driving and i turned on the ac the vehicle started smoking. keep in mind that my warranty expired earlier this year so majority of these expenses are coming out of my pocket, and guess what, yesterday on 9nov2008 the equinox died on me. i can't even get it to start. when i turn the key all the vehicle is doing is making a clicking noise but it's not turning over. i don't know if it's the battery because the horn works, the gage lights come on, the radio works, but it's just not turning over. it's back in the shop again, and there's no telling how much this is going to set me back. this vehicle has given me and my wife so much heart ache, and what i just listed were some of the high lights of problems that this vehicle has given us. times are tough right now and this equinox is not making things any easier. the gm company should be ashamed of themselves for making such a crappy product such as this vehicle. never again will i ever buy another chevy or any other gm product. i regret ever buying this vehicle. *tr

I have a 2005 equinox. it started overheating and losing coolant, though there was no leak underneath. brought it to my mechanic who told me i had a blown head gasket. i emailed chevy but because its not at a dealership refuse to help any with the problem. i don't understand how something so major can break on a 3 year old vehicle. *tr

Bought 2005 chevy equinox brand new. chemical smell in cab at about 1200 miles and at 19,000 a/c leak detected and compressor and parts replaced. *tr

At approx 125k miles the thermostat failed. *tr

Our 2005 chevrolet equinox began to blow warmer air than usual when in the coldest air conditioning setting. we took it to the dealership and were told the problem was an internal valve in the compressor for the air conditioning unit. $1,050.00 to replace. our vehicle is 9 months and 4,000 miles out of warranty. we took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and he said without having to look anything up. it's a systemic problem with the 2005 model year equinox and the part is back ordered for 2 months because so many people have the same problem. *tr

I bought a 2005 equinox 4 months ago, paid $4000.00 down on this car and then 2 month later i had to put out $ 956.00 on the cooling system. the air compressor had went out. now 2 months later the car had started getting a little over heated. i put engine coolant in it and it seemed to be doing better. 2 weeks after putting the engine coolant in it runs hot again worse than before and i am being told that it has a blown head gasket. i took it to a place that i trust with my vehicle repairs first because i was afraid to drive it to the dealership where i bought due to being afraid it would mess it up even more. they called and told me what the problem is and that's when i called the dealership. they say they are going to come and tow the vehicle to their shop and check it out and see what can be done. or either see about giving me another car. i'm not going to keep putting money out to get this car fixed and nothing is under warranty any more. there are a few other problems with this vehicle. a couple of times it's acted like it didn't want to start, and i can get out of it and lock it and before i walk away it will unlock by it self. also i have gotten out of it and the bell will keep dinging like the key is still in it. i've noticed that when i'm making a sharp turn that there seems to be noise with the front tire or something on the passenger side. i can't afford to be fixing this car every couple of months. it's crazy... *tr

Beginning in 2007, the car would stall a little when i tried to start it. it would catch and start, but the noise was of some concern. early this year, the car would fail to start at all when i went to crank it. i've had it in the service shops at two different dealerships, and they've both told me they can't find anything wrong. i was stranded again today, but the car finally started after i waited for the tow truck for more than an hour. both times the car was in the shop, the folks working on it ran every test they new of and tried to repeat the problem but couldn't. *tr

77k miles on vehicle, less than 3 years old, head gasket is leaking and needs to be replaced, also ignition cylinder failure, dexcool coolant supposedly is degrading the nylon material in coolant lines, the entire head gasket unit has to be replaced ($1500), i have all service records for vehicle and have not missed a schedule preventable maintenance/oil change/etc...for vehicle and i bought vehicle brand new off of lot with 83 miles. *tr

I purchased this 2005 chevy equinox in may 2006 with 26k miles on it. in may of 2008 with less than 60k miles on it the head gaskets blew! gm refused to repair or do anything to assist financially in the repair. i took it to another mechanic (i cannot afford gm labor rates) who did in fact repair the head gaskets and the vehicle ran again. in november 2009 the head gaskets blew again. i again called gm with an answer of no, i filed a complaint but heard nothing about it. i again took the vehicle to another non gm dealer and had it repaired. yesterday 1/4/2011 with 130,000 miles and a motor that has been overhauled twice, the head gasket blew again. i am quite sure the nhtsa is not going to do anything to assist in this; however, one quick search of "2005 equinox and head gasket" and you will find that this problem is happening over and over and over again, and gm quite simply refuses to take responsibility. i have spoken to a person at gm in the past and was told they were aware of the problem but not enough had been reported to warrant a recall. *tr

Replaced two front brake sensors - same side; computer board for antilock brake system went out - cannot afford to replace it; emissions system light is on - checked twice to find out what is wrong; leak in a/c hose when first purchased...car is a lemon,,bought it new...when troubles started it had less than 55,000 miles.... *tr

I have a leaking head gasket, i bought this equinox 6 months ago and its 1,200.00 to fix it at the dealer ship. i just paid 306.00 to replace the motor in the driver's side window. front end makes lots of noises. *tr

I just bought the vehicle a 205 chevy equinox and the 2nd day i took my wife for a drive & we both noticed a bad odor coming from the ventilation. it caused her to get sick. i told the dealer and they did an ionizer cleaning thing, but that didn't work, because after 2 days, for the last two weeks i've been sick with upset stomach, nausea, headache, sinus problems, earache. had to take off work because i was feeling bad. i've read some other reports on this type vehicle and noticed people complained about same thing. *tr

In january, 2008, i started to notice an antifreeze odor whenever the weather warmed a little. on february 2, i stopped to get the care washed and while i was drying it off noticed steam coming from the front of the car, with a strong antifreeze odor. i drove the car directly to the nearest mechanic, one that i use exclusively for after-warranty repairs in my town. i was told the vehicle had what seemed to be a blown head gasket on initial examination, but they would let me know for sure after they were able to check it further. indeed it was what they thought, and it cost me $970 to repair. i asked them what could have caused such a thing in a 2005 chevy equinox that wasn't even 4 years old. i was told that chevrolet uses dex-cool orange coolant in this vehicle and it has been known to cause this type of problem. it has only been now, months later, that i have learned gm agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit tied to the engine coolant in vehicles beginning in 1995. i have obtained a copy of the paperwork for the class-action suit and am aware that the years involved are 1995 to 2003 for the group a vehicles with 3.1 liter or 3.4 liter v6 engines manufactured before 4/10/2003. i was not fortunate to belong within this group of cars who could be compensated, and missed the filing deadline of october 27, 2008. however, i am extremely upset that gm continued to use this coolant in a brand new model in 2005 knowing there had been serious problems for the same type engine for years of using it. i would really like to know if there is any way i can recoup the cost ot repairing my car during a time when i still owed almost 1 1/2 years payments before it was paid off. the local dealership salesman told me if i had owned a 2007 model it would still have been under warranty. that was a heartwarming thing to hear. *tr

While driving my 2005 chevy equinox check engine light comes on fill up with gas to reset as book stated no luck took to dealer for repairs stated the 02 sensor needed repairing picked up after the repair check engine light came on after driving less than 10 miles took car back to dealer. *tr

Auto was at rest at a stop light just after exiting expressway. auto seemed to lose power when the engine light came on and the temp gauge was reading hot. i slowly drove about a mile home. at this time i turn off the auto and opened the hood. i let it sit turned off for about an hour, at that time i tried to start the auto and it wouldn't turn over. i let it sit overnight and tried to start next morning, it turned over hard and started. i turned it off, checked the coolant it was very low. i added coolant, let it run about 10min, lots of steam come from tail pipe and no heat from vents. i then checked engine oil, it seemed watered down. a friend who knows cars told me head gasket. my 3year old chevy now needs at least $1500 to $2000 worth of repairs that may not be under warranty. *tr

I was traveling on a major highway (rte 495 s). i suddenly heard a loud noise and felt a jolt. i thought that i had gotten a flat tire, so i proceeded to pull into the break down lane. the car was idling fine but made a horrible scraping noise when moving. my mechanic informed me the bolts supporting my engine block had snapped and the only thing holding the engine was my axle ' hence the awful scraping noise. my car is less than 3 years old and has approximately 30k miles - i would think a part as important as the bolts supporting my engine block should last longer. i have all parts that were replaced. *tr

currently my vehicle is in the shop for a head gasket repair. i have previously had to take the vehicle in for a tsb on the cooling system to have the system flushed and new hoses and coolant replaced. a foul odor was being released from the vehicle and a sludge and discoloration was building up in the reserve tank. i recently started to notice that the vehicle was running hot (near red line at stop lights). upon checking my coolant level it was very low. it is a closed cooling system and this should not be. i immediately took it into the dealership. upon a service writer opening the hood the vehicle was sizzling and boiling. he quickly pointed out the sludge and discoloration again in my reserve tank and he told me this was indicative of a serious problem with the cooling system. i have been informed that i have a blown head gasket. i have researched on line and seen that this has occurred with numerous other 2005 equinox owners resulting in major engine problems and failures. everything from gaskets and heads to water pumps and entire engines having to be rebuilt or replaced is on record. is there any recourse available to the consumer in the event that problems should continue after this major repair? my vehicle is no longer under warranty and i still owe a very substantial balance. i cannot afford continuing major repair costs in addition to my monthly payments when it appears this was a manufacturing defect/problem. i look forward to your response. donna huff-bolek shady side, maryland *tr

Since i've owned the vehicle in 2005, i've had numerous occasions where there's been trouble with the engine cranking excessively. after too many times of this happening over the past couple of years, i finally took it into the dealer when it started getting worse. this was on 8/31/07. my response from the dealer was that this is "normal" due to service bulletin #03-06-03-001c. i've continued to have the problem, and it gets worse and worse. this is not a "normal" problem. chevrolet needs to correct this problem once and for all for all of its customers out there that have this issue. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. since purchasing the vehicle at 24,000 miles, the steering wheel and brakes have not worked and the service engine soon light illuminates intermittently. the purchase date, vin, powertrain, and engine size were unknown. the current mileage was 30,000 and failure mileage was 24,000. updated 12/07/07

We have a 2005 chevy equinox, as my mechanic would say, is a problem child. we have experienced what most have with the odor coming from the cooling system. our biggest complaint in with the suspension, and now the abs system. it took several visits to figure out why our vehicle was making loud noises in the front end. it all started while i was driving it around a sharp corner. from that day on, which was about six months ago, till present time the car has been load. we have an excellent mechanic. the noise in the front turned out to be the strut plates. this cost us $300 per side. we thought we had solved the issues except for about a week ago a louder noise stared. it felt and sounded like the car was going to break in two. we brought it back to our mechanic. this time it was the suspension system again. i do not know what it is called. there is a rod that is from the top of the strut that goes down to the wheel. these both needs to be replaced. the vehicle is at the shop now. thank fully theses rods only cost $30 a piece. the vehicle only has 46000 on it. then we can talk about the abs system. not every time but quite frequently we would back the car up and they abs would engage. only way to fix this was through replacing the sensors on the wheels. in not knowing which sensor is bad we would have to replace all of them which would amout to at least $1200. the good news or not such good news, however you want to look at it, the abs system is engaging going forward now, on dry pavement while braking. at least the mechanics should be able to find the falty sensor now that it is happening all of the time. shame on us for not doing our research before we bought the vehicle. *tr

I bought the eqinox in the end of february 2005. i noticed a sour smell, and had the dealer clean interior because of the rotten smell. the smell persisted, and the dealer had the coolant system flushed and said that would cure the problem. then , when the weather warmed up and i turned on the vent light steam would come out of the vents and moisture on the window inside. i had the car in the shop again for 5 days, and they said they could not find anything wrong. they had flushed the system again and the smell was still there. two weeks later the engine light came on. i took it back to the originals dealer, and they determined the heater core was gone and they replaced it and seemed to run fine , except it seemed to run hot and would leave a large puddle. i complained, but the dealer told me that it was normal, and that all was okay. last month in may 2007 every time i stopped the temperature gauge would climb so the dealer replaced the thermostat. 3 weeks later the gauge would hit red every time i would stop at a light. i brought it back again this time they said the head gaskets were shot. i contacted chevrolet, and they were supposed to gave me the parts, but it still cost $918.00 since now i was out of warranty. i have spoken to several mechanics, and they claimed the engine heads warped due to the heater core problems in the beginning, and that if i had a private repairman repair the gaskets the job would have coasted $1000, and chevrolet did not give me any real break.*ak

I have had numerous problems with my 2005 awd chevy equinox, including the head gaskets blowing, losing acceleration on the 270/highway, ongoing acceleration problems, and other problems which still continue. i have begged for chevy to help get the car fully repaired and the customer service representatives just keep telling me to bring it into the dealer. i've tried two dealers and returned to the purchasing dealer who will only make repairs if they can pull a code - they report i am having problems with my spark plug wires - first they reattached it, and then replaced one but car still doesn't drive as it did before head gaskets blew. please, please help me - i've had my car in the shop 8 times in 4 months and the dealer and chevy will not provide me with an extended warranty - car warranty ends in 6 months or help repair properly. i am scared to drive this car and don't know what to do as they don't take my concerns seriously as the only way they diagnose is by pulling codes. *tr

At intermittent times, for no reason, the vehicle won't start. it turns over like it wants to but then doesn't. it doesn't do this all the time and there's no explanation as to why it chooses to do this whenever. i usually have to give it gas in order for the engine to fire up. *tr

Bought the car used with 20,000 and it was having problems a week later. passenger window would not roll up,grinding and clicking at slow turns. they replaced rotors ,clutch and suspension and the problem was solved. then came the air condition not blowing cold air and the ignition sticking on start up. the final straw was the transmission slipping and dropping into lower gears, the car will be in the shop in the morning. last chevy i will ever buy back to nissan. *jb

Tensioner, pulley& fan belts failures...driver side window-defect..windows freezes will not go up,when up will not go down.. *tr

Cd player broke, water soaking floor boards twice causing mold & mildew. complete loss of radiator fluid, loss of engine power while driving twice. unusual wear of tires. rubbing in steering column when turning, knocking sound when turning slowly to the right, a/c not cooling efficiently. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated there were numerous problems with the vehicle. first, the engine would intermittently not crank. the dealer replaced the battery however, this did not correct the problem. second, while depressing the brake pedal the vehicle intermittently did not slow down. the brake pedal was pumped several times to get the brakes to activate correctly. third, the transmission revved high and intermittently did not change gears correctly while driving. fourth, the abs lamp illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the abs lamp was reset. lastly, the front passenger window was rolled down and would not rise back up. the dealer replaced the window regulator and the window was repaired. the vehicle was repeatedly taken to the dealer and addressed the problems that could be duplicated and made appropriate repairs. hard start/hesitation and almost stalling. also, determined speed sensor was causing reduced power. *ak

Tl*- the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. while driving at 55 mph on an incline the engine lost power. the contact was able to restart the vehicle immediately. the check engine occasionally illuminated before the engine stalled. the dealer informed the contact that this problem was due to a cracked spark plug which was caused by rain entering the vehicle through the windshield and coming into contact with the spark plugs. the spark plugs were replaced, and a shield was sealed to prevent water from coming into contact with spark plugs. the contact stated approximately 3 months later she experienced the same problem. the dealer removed and replaced the spark plug, the wire and the coil. a month later the vehicle experienced the same problem. the dealer informed the contact that a cracked spark plug was the reason for this occurrence. the vehicle currently had 33,000 miles. *ak

I purchased my 2005 chevy equinox on aug. 22, 2005 and instantly fell in love. soon after it began to smell as if my vehicle was going to over heat. i took the vehicle to the dealer to have it check out and nothing was found. although they did add more antifreeze. things were going fine until it got cold outside. when starting my brand new 2005 chevy equinox a popping noise was heard from the rear. i took it to the dealer and they stated that it was the exhaust. they replaced the exhausted and nothing was heard, at least for two weeks. needless the say the noise has come back and no one seems to know what's wrong. to top it off a foul smell comes from the vents went the heat is on. i now have to ride with the window slightly open because the smell is now cause headaches for me and my passengers. i am deeply concerned about the condition of my vehicle because i have a small child that i am concerned about while traveling in this car. *nm

Bought brand new 2005 chevy equinox. bad odor coming from vents. dex cool is corroding cooling system, and engine. 17,000 miles have had it in 3 times for entire coolant system flush... still is un bearable. be aware this is not an isolated case. consequence- after extended drive (greater than 30 minutes) results in light-headedness, headache, or watery burning eyes. it leaves a film of antifreeze vapor on the windshield, on the inside. gm does not consider this vehicle inoperable. go figure. gm has done little to satisfy our needs, they pay for new hoses and flush- which obviously doesn't work. 900 dollars a pop, for the same result. parts repaired: 5 hoses (all of them) 3x, dex-cool 3x. safety is something they strive for at gm, what happened? *nm

2005 chevy equinox awd, 3 starters, 3 coolant tanks, all coolant hoses changed, heater changed twice, a pillar panels leaked air, radiator replaced, battery bolt replaced, rear shelf broke, constant coolant smell in car, made wife sick, had car 5 months approx, spend around 90 + days in shop, dealer did all they could, but g.m. refused to work on car under warranty anymore, g.m. " forced " to buy back under lemon law, bought toyota, period. have all receipts and paper work for anybody interested. *jb

Took in for oil change and lube tech at dealer suggested take in for service due to discoloration of antifreeze, told by service advisor this was okay and not to worry. second oil change same issues, finally have appointment to hopefully correct, poor gas mileage, erratic shifting, gas cap that will not stay on,check engine light once or twice a week, and only 8300 hundred miles on vehicle. will have hard time buying another chevorlet again. *jb

I have a 2005 chevy equinox the muffler system is very loud and needs replaced. i have taken it to the dealer where i bought it and they say there is no way to fix the problem. even the garage manager agrees that it is to loud.

There have been several problems that have been fixed, however one remains. there is a popping noise, coming from the back end, resulting in many pops in a series, and then it won't do it again. this usually happens after a cold start and driving it for a couple minutes then coming to a stop. however it has happened immediately at start up and during the course of driving for the first couple minutes.*jb

When starting vehicle, engine would continually roll over until starting. i took the vehicle to the dealership under warranty many times for this problem and they tried to tell me that i was holding the key too long in the start position. i have owned many vehicles and have been licensed for over 15 years, never happened with any other car. now 5 years later, with only 65k miles, it still rolls over but doesn't start. i have to try again and pump the gas a few times to get it to start. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle restarted and was placed in drive, however it did not move. the vehicle was towed to a dealership who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. also, the vehicle shook while driving over 60 mph and when the brakes were applied. the dealership replaced the tires twice, rotated, and balanced the tires in an effort to correct the problem. the dealership also replaced the rims, wheels, and hubs, however the problem persisted. in addition, the air conditioner unit fell off the bracket which caused the engine to shut down. the vehicle was towed to the dealership. updated10/04/06. *jb

There is a bad smell coming from the air vents. found out that there was mold in the cooling system. there are many many other things that have been wrong with my car. they have had 3 attempts to fix the problem and have not. i have a dr. statement that the car is not safe for me to drive because of my asthma and other medical problems. the car has been back to the dealership 8 times since i bought it in april for many things. but 3 times for the smell and 3 times for the brakes and nether have been fixed. *jb

Took delivery o '05 equinox in june of '04. within the first year i began having an odor of coolant in the passenger compartment. had coolant system flushed and tank cleaned out in april of '05. this was apparently before a tsb was issued for the problem. in march of '06 i had it back to the dealer for the same problem and this time they had a tsb for it and changed the hoses and coolant under warranty. again in july of '06 dealer replaced the tank and coolant due to coolant gelling in tank. in august of '06 with 35,557 miles on the car (just under the 36,000 mile warranty there was again the smell accompanied by overheating. dealer found leaks in the front and rear head gasket. just barely got this job in under warranty! within weeks i was back at the dealer for a heater core replacement. they told me that this sometimes happens with the problem of the head gasket. (why didn't they check this when they were doing the head gasket if that was the case?) anyway i was back to the dealer by december due to the sound of air in the system after the heater core replacement. they found a leak between the tranny and the back of the block. they replaced the metal heater o-ring that was leaking. i never asked for any of the old parts from the dealer. i recently had the car to my mechanic (not the dealer) because of the smell of coolant in the cabin and the sound of water rushing/air in the system. he told me there is a tsb for hth problem and i would have to flush the system and change all the hoses. that was the end of march and i was saving $ for the job. this week my car overheated all the way to the red and when i checked the reservoir it was empty. i can't afford to replace or flush the coolant system every few months or year, especially when it is supposed to last much longer. if you have any advice on a remedy for the situation i would greatly appreciate it. i have had numerous other problems with this vehicle which i have ...

Coolant was turning brown and starting to smell. defective hoses were the problem. hoses had to be replaced, engine flushed, new coolant, etc. chevy knows of the problem, but has not informed any owners.

Foul odor in cabin coming from heater, also smell is noticable outside the car. checked the coolant and it is dark brown and has a strong foul odor. the vehicle does not get anywhere near the mileage per gallon that gm states it should get of 19 and 25. lucky if it get 13mpg city and 15 highway.*ak

I own a 2005 chevrolet equinox with 8500 miles, the antifreeze is dark brown in color and there is a film of brown stuff on the recovery bottle. it also smells like rotten meat.

The radiator is leaking coolant, increasing the chance of the vehicle to overheat. taken to dealer twice for repairs, but the problem recurred.*ak

Cooling system problems, foul smell, fluid is a dark color when it should be light pink. problem was first pointed out at 2nd oil change appointment. they advised that the cooling system was malefunctioning and that i should contact the dealership to have this fixed. they also mentioned that they have seen 3 other equinox's all with the same problem. upon contacting the dealership they advised that it was not a malefunction, they did not seem concerned about this problem. appointment is scheduled in a couple days. upon reading more about this cooling system problem i am even more concerned due to the fact that there is yet to be a recall and all of the vehicles are having the same problem.*ak

Since i've owned the vehicle, there has been a strong odor in the cabin of the car. i noticed the coolant has changed from pink to black with sludge floating in it. i am also getting far less average gas mileage than was listed. i am averaging less than 17 mph on the highway. not close to the 25 that is advertised. was informed by the service manager that that the smell and other coolant issues is normal for this vehicle (05 chevrolet equinox). with the heat on and windows up, the car is almost undrivable due to the smell. *ak

I recently purchased a 2005 chevrolet equinox. after only 500 miles the engine coolant has turned brown and has a very bad odor (stinks). when the heater is turned on, the odor comes into the passenger compartment and is almost intolerable.*ak

This is a correction to the complaint i submitted yesterday. the complaint number is 10100295. on that complaint please delete the part of the complaint that says the abnormal odor from the engine coolant is entering the passenger compartment of the vehicle. i found that the coolant reservoir cap was loose, allowing the strong odor of the coolant to escape and be drawn into the passenger compartment. when i tightened the cap the odor stopped entering the passenger compartment. i am still very concerned about the abnormal odor and color of the coolant. this could be adversely affecting components of the cooling system and engine. *jb

My 2005 chevrolet equinox has reoccruing problems with 1) the engine coolant turning from the normal dex cool pink color to a dark brown / black color. 2) horrible smell entering the passenger cabin when the engine is running the heat is on.the vehicle was picked up from the service department on november 18th and according to the dealer, gm's technical line is instructing all service departments to take no repair actions as they are still trying to determine the cause. the first time i took the vehicle in they performed a coolant system flush which took care of the problem for a couple of hundred miles, only to return. *ak this problem is happening all across north america so it cannot be blamed on weather or type of fuel used. i have many concerns with the long term reliability of this vehicle.
