How To Tint Windows of the Chevrolet Equinox?

Chevrolet Equinox window tinting isn't just a matter of style; it's a practical decision with multiple benefits. Firstly, it helps keep the Equinox cooler on hot days by reducing the heat entering the cabin, providing a more comfortable journey.

Moreover, window tinting shields against sun glare. Every driver knows how challenging it can be to drive with the sun in their eyes. Tinting mitigates this issue by cutting down on the sun's rays, enhancing safety and visibility.

Beyond functionality, high-quality window tinting also elevates the appearance of your Chevrolet Equinox. It also offers privacy, preventing onlookers from peering into your vehicle.

Wash your Chevrolet Equinox’s windows

Before you start the tinting process, it’s crucial to wash the windows of your Chevrolet Equinox. Remove all dirt and debris. Use a window cleaner with a microfiber cloth to get rid of any remaining contaminants on the glass surface. After cleaning, rinse and wipe the windows to ensure they are clear and ready for tinting.

Remove the old tint film

If your Chevrolet Equinox has previously been tinted, you’ll need to remove the old film first. Applying new tint over old can compromise the result, and the new film might not adhere properly.

To remove the old film, you can use one of two main methods:

  • Use a heat gun to warm the film, making it easier to peel off from the edges. Avoid overheating any section to prevent glass damage. Distribute the heat evenly across the glass surface;
  • Alternatively, you can use a blade to peel off the old tint film. Special glass-cleaning tools are available in stores for this purpose. Use the blade to lift the film and scrape it off, but be careful not to scratch the glass.

Regardless of the method, adhesive residue will likely remain on the glass. This can be removed with a metal scraper, though you must be careful to avoid damaging the glass.

An easier and more effective method is to use chemicals like anti-silicone or carburetor cleaner. Apply it to the glass, let it sit for a while, then wipe the window clean. These reagents will dissolve the glue, making it easier to remove.

Important Safety Tip: These products can be smelly and toxic! Make sure you work in a well-ventilated area and follow all safety precautions.

Prepare the tinting film

Handle the tinting film carefully. It has a tinted layer and a protective transparent layer, akin to a sticker.

Identify the side with the protective layer; it should face you during application.

To find this layer, lightly lift an edge of the film with a blade. The film will separate into two parts: the tinted layer and the transparent protective layer, which should be facing you.

Prepare a soapy solution

Make a soapy solution by filling a container with water and adding 5-6 drops of liquid soap or shampoo (increase the soap amount for larger containers).

Stir the mixture thoroughly. Pour the solution into a sprayer for convenient application during the tinting process.

Cut out the necessary shape from the tinting film

Before you begin, remember an important tip: the tinting film is applied to the inside of the glass, but it's fitted to the outside. When cutting the film, remember it will be applied in a mirror-like fashion.

So, let's start tinting your Chevrolet Equinox.

Apply a soapy solution to the outside of the window where you plan to apply the tint

Preparing the surface is key. Begin by applying a soapy solution to the outside of the window where you'll be applying the tint. This helps with adhesion and prevents air bubbles, ensuring a smooth and professional finish.

Place the tinting film on the glass and spread it with a plastic spatula or a card

As mentioned earlier, ensure the transparent layer of the tinting film is facing you. If not, you’ll have to redo the process.

Use a knife to cut the tint to the shape of the glass

Cut the film with a blade, leaving about 1 inch extra on each side (top, bottom, and sides) for adjustments.

Adapt the shape of the film to the shape of your glass

Shift the film to ensure it covers the entire window, including the part covered by the seal. Cut and adjust the edges as needed, leaving about 1/2 inch of extra film on each side of the window. For the bottom edge, extend it below the window to provide a better light seal.

Finally, cut off the excess film in the corners of the window to prevent it from touching the window when closing.

Prepare the inside of the window glass

Clean the inside of the glass thoroughly, leaving no dirt or debris. Apply a generous amount of soapy solution.

Remove the protective (transparent) layer from the tinting film

Carefully separate the transparent layer from the tinted one. The glue under the protective layer is very sticky, so be careful not to contaminate it. Once removed, immediately wet the adhesive part with a soapy solution to prevent dust from sticking.

Place the tinting film on the inner surface of the glass

Attach the film with the adhesive side to the inner surface of the glass. Ensure it's properly aligned and fits snugly without gaps. Remember to leave a small margin at the top to prevent damage during operation.

Flatten the tinting film on the glass and remove excess water

Once the film is properly placed, use a plastic spatula or card to expel excess water from underneath. Ensure no water or air bubbles remain under the film for a flawless finish.

Repeat these steps for all windows

To achieve the best results, repeat these steps with the same attention and precision for all other windows of your Chevrolet Equinox. Proper application will ensure a satisfying final look.
