Problems with 2012 Chevrolet Cruze ENGINE

On average, the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 63 463 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. while driving approximately 25 to 35 mph, the check engine light illuminated. while the vehicle was idling at a red light, it shook violently. the dealer diagnosed that the valve cover needed to be replaced. the dealer stated that the vehicle was not included in an unknown recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown.

In dec of 2015 i had to replace the thermostat with only 39000 on it check engine light on fan racing. 6 months later it's happening again check engine light on fan racing now there saying it might be an electrical problem.i have driven chevys for 30 years and never have i had this much trouble this will be my last. from reading the forums it seems like a lot of people have the same problems why isn't there a recall on this car.

Driving my car at about 25mph started to hear a rattle in it. when went to accelerate the car started to smoke and had no power. when idling you could hear the motor "work" and it had a jump in it. only has 50,000 miles and has never been driven hard. of course it's out of warranty now and i have no clue why it wouldn't accelerate and started smoking. the engine light came on and was still on when i left my car sitting on the side of the road.

I was starting to cross a busy intersection when the engine loss power light and stability control light came on. car would not go over 5 miles an hour. just about 90 days ago it was at the chevy dealership for same problem where the throttle body and all sensors were replaced.

Engine starts shaking when air conditioner is on and while in stop sigh.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. while driving 30 mph depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would not accelerate. the vehicle sputtered and stalled, and the service engine light illuminated. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the cam cover needed to be replaced and the fuel trim needed to be reset. the repairs were performed; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was towed again to the dealer. the contact stated that the stabilitrac warning light remained illuminated. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000.

Vehicle has 29,980 approximate miles. vehicle had a leaking torque converter seal. while dealership was removing transmission, a stray bolt fell from the interior of the motor. bolt does not belong to car. it has damaged the bell housing. no other damage has been reported at this moment.

I purchased a new 2012 cruze eco new and currently have 48k miles on it. this weekend the cruze twice had the following problems: 1. dic error - engine power reduced 2. dic error - service stabilitrak 3. check engine light engine power was reduced to peak out at 10 mph. luckily the power steering was unaffected and i was able to get the cruze home without accident. letting the cruze sit for a few minutes in the off position seemed to clear the issue, but it was still scary to have the engine shut down like it did. local dealer confirmed that the throttle body was junk and replaced it but not under any warranty. total cost was $400. dealer confirmed that similar issue is occurring with sierra pickups and the tb is covered under the powertrain warranty. very disappointed that the tb was not covered as an engine component. many cruze owners are having this problem...look on cruzetalk.com. the tb should not be wearing out at 48k...or 100k.

Vehicle cuts out while at a stop light like it wants to shut off, car was running about 10 minutes and in motion at 30 mph for 5 minutes when it started, then drove on the highway for 30 minutes and through town another 10 minutes, when i got home it was still cutting out, i was almost home when i noticed the engine light came on. today i did fill my gas tank. it has done this on other occasions but not as bad as it did today and this was the first time the engine light came on. my car has a little over 70,000 miles on it, i've done regular oil changes, when i looked under the hood i noticed liquid around my motor gaskets and the tray under it, i couldn't tell if it was oil or antifreeze. warranty has ran out.

Around sunrise on a highway with an adult passenger the car lost all power instantly. the steering was heavy and the brakes had very little power. we was able to drift over to a safe area. the way this car performs with little braking effort it can cause some bad accidents in other enviroments such as mountains. the safety of the chevrolet cruze models needs to be improve.

I just purchased my 2012 chevy cruze 3 months ago, it has 36,000 miles. last week when i started off to work i got a reduced engine power message and the car would not accelerate. i read the manuel and followed the instructions, turned off the car, waited and restarted, but it still would not accelerate. i checked online for reported problems with the car and found that many people have had the same issue. i called the dealership and was told i could take the car in but would have to pay for any repairs because there was no recall on this problem. a few days later i started the car and it seemed fine so i tried driving it. it was fine for the first 15 minutes but then the reduced engine power light came on again and the car would not accelerate once again. i had to pull off to the side of the road, turn off the car and wait several minutes to be able to drive a short distance before the problem happened again. thank god i was not on the highway when this happened or i could have been in a terrible accident. i can not believe that with so many owners reporting the same problem there has not been a recall. also it appears the manufacturer was aware of the problem from the beginning because in the owners manuel they tell you what to do if this should happen.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. while driving 40 mph, the cooling fan was activated and the thermostat gauge indicated that the vehicle was running hot. upon further notice, the contact noticed liquid leaking from the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic where it was diagnosed that the water pump, water pump housing, and the thermostat needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

61,000 miles and car is showing repeated p2135 codes for throttle/pedal senor issue and places the car in limited power mode. event has happened during warm-up, at stop signs and lights, local street speeds, and during highway travel/speeds. i have cleared the issue using obd ii tool and phone app.

My engine light is on. i put gas in my vehicle and when i turn the key to start it, it hesitates to start then when pulling off it begins to jerk.... when at lights it sometimes hesitates to take off.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that an abnormal burning odor emitted from the vehicle and it overheated. in addition, when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle hesitated to respond and the brakes made an abnormal noise. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the thermostat and water pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

While driving the car loses power and comes back. this happens at any speed or even taking off from a stop sign. there have been several occisions

We had 6 recalls we never new about turn out the car broke down call dealer and said we receive that day a recall car was not drivable call power train they sent a wreaker recall were fix now their charging 2,200 for a ecotec turbocharger that's crack in a gm web site wheres their is a recall but yet have not receive one this is a single mom of 4 kids we need car fix asap help please my brother has a wrecker service its in fort stockton tx not drivable bad load nose just started in motion this car 3yrs old very upset.

Chevrolet cruze recall my 2012 chevrolet cruze was recalled twice, once of overheating while driving, and once for brake failure when crawling, such a parking. the dealership tried to fix these problems, but the brakes still fail, and now the uses 1 quart every week. the brake failure recently reoccurred when my spouse was parking and she hit a wall and damages the car. the dealer has since told me they do not know why the car is consuming oil, so i have elevated the issue to gm i think that the ntsb has to further monitor this problem to ascertain why the recalled items are still failing.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. after filling the vehicle with fuel, the contact started the vehicle and it made a sputtering noise and began to shake. the contact stated that the engine warning indicator was consistently illuminated. the contact turned the key to the off position; however, the engine did not power off. it took several attempts to power the engine off. the contact released the accelerator pedal and kept the vehicle parked for approximately five minutes until the shaking and sputtering ceased. the failure recurred on several occasions when fueling the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 106,000.

Twice i have walked back to my car & found that the engine has remained on. after parking, i press the engine on/off button, exit the car, lock all doors with the fob and walk away. this time, i parked in a very large, crowded public parking lot. i was at least 6 blocks away from the car for 2 hours. thankfully, this has occurred when the car is outside, not in my garage. in recent light of people succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning due to this very situation occurring with cars in closed garages, i would expect a voluntary or forced recall to remedy this gm admitted design decision.

The acceleration takes a lot to go from 0-30 mph and when it does the car feels as though it will stall. vehicle is serviced regularly. this seems to be worse when the defrost or air is on. the gas pedal needs to be almost to the floor for it to even pick up and when it does accelerate it jumps between the gears and the rpm reeves up and the vehicle is slow to move.the engine fan also runs for 30 secs, shuts off, 1-2 mins later runs for 30 secs and shuts off. have had engine temp checked and no issues with the car overheating but unknown why the fan runs on high all the time and it takes away the power to the car.

I have noticed that the acceleration takes alot to go from 0-30 mph and when it does the car feels as though it will stall. there is a half tank of gas, and no indication it should be doing this. oil is changed regularly. this has happened a few times before this incident of today. the gas pedal needs to be almost to the floor for it to even pick up and when it does accelerate it jumps between the gears and the rpm goes beyond 4-5 to get it to even 20mph. i did have an incident when the car stalled as i was in reverse. that happened at around 30-35k miles. i decided to google the acceleration issue and see i am not the only one. my car itself has had 3 recalls fixed.

Over heating. 3 times in 3 years. i have had to have water pump replaced and thermometer. mechanic has told me he doesn't understand this issue. car doesn't cool down in idle. directed me to dealership. 1 st time occurred i took it to closed shop. dealership said it's not covered cause they didn't do the work. it wasn't like i could get it to them the car was shutting down. next time i got it back to same mechanic as it was still warranty. this time they replaced same items no charge said take it to dealer they don't know what cause is. i know of other people that had a chevy cruz with same issues and they traded it in. this has been a terrible car. these kind of problems occurred in the 80s not the 2000s

I was driving home from work on the highway doing about 60-65 miles per hour. the car was driving fine but it suddenly started to loose speed and power. then the check engine light came on and the car stalled. i was able to make it to the shoulder safely but traffic was flying by me at varying speeds from 50-75 mph. the vehicle stalled within 30 seconds of me noticing the loss of power and the gauges did not show any warning lights of heating or empty gas tank. i allowed the car to cool down for about 10 minutes after popping the hood open and then i attempted to start it. no luck. the starter was cranking but the engine would not turn. the engine tried to turn on as if i kept the key turned in the on position. i allowed the car to cool down for another 40 minutes (with the hood open) as it was a hot day, 87f, i attempted again and the same starting noise came, but the car never turned back on. i had to call a tow truck and spend $130 to take it home. i'm glad that i was alone and that it was during the day. imagine if this happened at night in a winter icy road when i have my family with me!!! wow... this situation scared me and now i'm not sure if i should use the car for anymore for road trips with the family, its dangerous. the interior also smells like antifreeze fluid when i turn on the heat in winter time. that is another issue!!!. i hope to hear form gm. thank you *tr

Smells like burning oil took car to my mechanic and said there is some oil spilling on side of engine.

When the car first started messing up it was minor things i noticed: the in dash lighter not working, trunk latch doesn't work except by key, turn signals would glitch, can't use usb & audio cord at same time without it cutting off both completely. then a couple weeks later i noticed my car had an unusual delay in increasing speed it was as if i had to push it to the floor just to get to 30 mph. now the most recent event occurred on 9/17/15 which is what's prompting me to file this complaint (keep in mind i've only owned the vehicle for 8 months, purchased at 54k miles currently has 70.9k) i drove to my house approx 30 min hwy from where i was i got into my car the next morning it didn't start at all. my bf checked the battery voltage & it was too dead to test, with a jumper box my car took approx10 min to even turn over, during the time of me inside the car attempting to start it my steering column locked up, lights in dash, radio system, headlights everything flashing on and off, key was stuck inside ignition, a foul smell & clicking noise is coming from engine, & couldn't lock doors once i turned car off immediately. this all occurred i'd say within a matter of 30 seconds after the car to turned over. was so freaked out i didn't try to start again for 2-3 min and once i did it started right up. within 72 hrs i have now seen the stabilitrac service alert, theft alert system needs serviced, along w/ air bags, & battery light flickers on & off. the clicking under my hood has continued, the rotten egg smell from engine comes & goes, dash lights go dim then go back to regular. drove to o'reillys, they were able to tell me i now have a bad alternator as well. recall 14801 was issued for reprogram engine control module, getting serviced this week at dealership but could this possibly cause all this?? especially considering i don't want to be responsible for repairs. help

I went to my fathers house and he noticed the smell of antifreeze strongly. he looked under my hood and on the ground and its leaking everywhere. i had bought this car not even 4 months ago and the first week the check engine light was on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that that while at an independent mechanic for routine repairs, the mechanic diagnosed that there was oil leaking from the turbo into the intake hose and the turbo needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. in addition, the contact stated that the vehicle stalled. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to a dealer who diagnosed that the cam cover assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. in addition, while driving at 10 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. the contact had to apply force to the brake pedal in order to get the vehicle to stop, however, the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 13v360000 (service brakes, hydraulic), however, the vin was not included. the failure mileage was 88,000.

Drove my car about 70 miles on the interstate once i got into town and stopped at a red light the car began to sputter, when i accelerated the car was hesitant. major safety concern, i could have been rear ended. also, when making a left hand turn onto a busy state route the car would not accelerate it was very hesitant making the turn to a point i thought the car was going to stall, in front of oncoming traffic. the car is at the dealer today getting the coolant recall completed and it will be computer checked for the engine light. from what i was told by another mechanic, the car is loosing vacuum pressure and the valves or valve cover is leaking. *tr

Reported oil pressure drop alert on my car, strong rubber burning smell and smoke coming from engine. oil was spraying out on engine, reported the issue to chevy, however they state nothing can be done until mid april. was sent home driving car in this condition and was not offered help nor was my car serviced or fixed during the appointment i made at the sunrise chevrolet location. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that the check engine light continued to illuminate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the map sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. the contact mentioned that the vehicle failed to pass inspection. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 66,000. updated 4/30/15*cn the consumer stated the vehicle did not idle properly and the vehicle would stall when he attempted to pull out into traffic. updated 06/23/15*jb

While accelerating from a stop, engine suddenly lost power, warning lights came on, "reduced engine power" message displayed. brought car to a stop, accelerator pedal did nothing, engine would only idle. shut engine off for 20 seconds, restarted, and pedal worked, car would accelerate. returned home, scanned engine control module for codes, found p2135 for throttle position sensor. took to dealer for repairs under warranty, they cleaned throttle body. had car back for 2 days and problem occurred again. found same code, returned car to dealer. chevy dealer was reluctant to replace throttle body, didn't even mention the malfunction and wanted to instead replace a coolant sensor. i was able to convince them to replace throttle body, and the repair order states that they updated the ecm software level. i believe there is a tsb which should be a recall. sudden loss of engine power is extremely dangerous when pulling into traffic, merging, etc. *tr

For the past several months since june 2014, i have been experiencing the vehicle acceleration performance decrease. once at a stop or stop light, it takes the vehicle between 10 to 40 seconds to fully pick up speed upon pressing on the acceleration. today (02/14/2015) the vehicle stopped with engine light on while i was trying to move from a stop sign. this was scary. i imagined this wound have been terrible if i was in the midst of fast moving vehicles. i went online to check if there was a trend in the chevy cruze acceleration and random engine shut down; sadly i came across several complaints from the following link: http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/cruze/2012/engine/engine.shtml this is a serious issue, and i urge the federal government to investigate these complaints and notify gm to take immediate action upon completion of the fed investigation. it is sad that we cannot even rely on home made products. *tr

Very strong smell of burning oil when car comes to a stop. oil sprayed all over the top rear of engine and down back of engine. dealer replaced pcv valve and manifold cover at 44,678 miles due to recurring antifreeze leak and lean fuel / low vacuum condition. going back to dealer again i guess before it bursts into flames. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that the vehicle was leaking and there was an anti freeze odor. the vehicle was taken to the dealer five times, but the failure was unable to be determined. the dealer replaced the thermostat, but the failure recurred. the contact mentioned that the anti freeze odor was strong, which caused headaches. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on a separate occasion where dye was added into the radiator to find a leak, but failed. on another occasion, the vehicle was taken to a dealer where a pressure test was performed but the anti freeze odor became worse. the failure mileage was 32,600.

Driving on the highway at roughly 70mph when car shuddered, and lost power immediately. after this the car would not accelerate. fortunately there were no vehicles directly behind me, so i was able to pull over to the side of the road. the check engine light was illuminated and the dashboard read three errors: "engine power is reduced", "service traction control", "service stabilitrack". after turning the car off, waiting, and turning back on the vehicle worked correctly, but the issue occurred after another 15 minutes on the road. i drove in the right lane the rest of the way home to ensure our safety, and this occurred 4 times in total. this was an extremely dangerous situation during a busy holiday travel weekend. had this occurred at the wrong time, this could have been catastrophic. quick research online has shown this to be an issue with the make and model, as many other people have reported this exact defect. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that while stationary, the engine warning light illuminated. the contact stated that smoke came from under the hood of the vehicle directly after the vehicle was purchased. chevrolet of broadsheadville, pennsylvania was made aware of the series of failures and diagnosed that the engine coolant thermostat was faulty. in addition, the transmission was replaced, under a manufacturers recall, but the failure recurred thereafter. the dealer stated that the contact would have to get used to the new transmission and the way the vehicle operated after the repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty in regards to the mileage. the failure mileage was 78,000. the vin was not available. updated 09/06/17*lj *js

I was at a red light and when the light turned green, i was about to push the gas pedal. the vehicle dash read engine power is reduced and shut off. i tried several times to start the vehicle but it shut down saying the same thing on the dash. i'm afraid because someone could have ran into me from the rear and i have a 7yr old daughter. i think this should be handled immediately. this is not safe at all. *tr

This is a very well known problem with chevy owners. i have done countless hours of research and seen hundreds of forums and articles related exactly to this specific issue. now it has to be brought to the attention of the federal government to issue a recall. i own a 1.4l turbo automatic 2lt chevy cruze 2012. this problem has been happening since the first year i purchased the vehicle however is getting much worse. reduced engine power. the engine light comes on, a "!" shows up on the screen and the cars speed is reduced to 4 or 5 mph with in a matter of seconds. this has happened to myself as well as hundreds of other people from what the internet says. this is very unsafe especially considering some people have families and drive with children such as myself on highway systems. i experienced this while trying to accelerate into an intersection and got an immediate engine speed reduction. this could have killed my daughter and i if the vehicles in the intersection were unable to stop in time. please do what is necessary to get this vehicle part or issue recalled and or recognized immediately! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that vehicle was serviced per a manufacturer voluntary emission recall: 14801 (engine) to reprogram the engine control module. after the vehicle was repaired at john donoghue automotive (363 vinson blvd, whiteville, nc 28472 (910) 642-2400), the brake pedal became difficult to depress. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for diagnostic testing and was serviced per a manufacturer recall: 12213 (brakes) where the brake vacuum micro switch was replaced. however, the brake failure recurred several months later. the vehicle was then taken back to john donoghue automotive, but the failure could not be duplicated. recently, driving 35 mph, the temperature gauge on the instrument panel increased while the air conditioner was turned on. when the air conditioner was turned off, the temperature gauge decreased. the contact also stated that the fan would remain on for several minutes after the vehicle was turned off. the contact stated that the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and advised the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnostic testing. due to the diagnostic fees, the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the dealer was not contacted for the recent failure. the failure mileage was 57,395. ...updated 10/19/17 *bf *js

Strong smell of antifreeze while driving, strong smell of antifreeze under the hood, antifreeze leaking on serpentine belt and sprayed around engine compartment. dealer replaced water pump. *tr

I bought my 2012 chevy cruze in september 2014. since i have had it, when driving any where, when i press the gas pedal to drive, the car sounds like it rears up to loud. i have to take my foot off the gas, then press gently and drive slow, inorder for the car to not make that sound. my car is not a straight drive, it is automatic, therefore it should not be making that sound as if it's in the wrong gear. is this going to be a very bad problem down the road? *tr

Car radio kept cutting on and off multiple times before all of the car lights flashed on the dashboard and steering wheel became stiff. i pulled over on the side of the road, cut the car off and pulled out the key. i put the key back in the ignition and tried to start the car and it wouldn't start. the lights and radio didn't even come on. i couldn't put the key back in the off switch nor could i pull the key out. after about a minute or so my radio came on and i was finally able to start my car. *tr
