Problems with 2011 Chevrolet Cruze ENGINE

On average, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 69 674 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

There is an oil leak the is dropping on, possibly the exhaust, and the fumes from burnt oil is coming in through the vents. breathing that in is not safe.

Turbo gate went out at 74k miles, like the flip of a switch. running fine in the morning then went to leave work the afternoon and gave it gas and started making a terrible noise. shop i took it to so it could be looked at said it was the 3rd one he saw this year.

We purchased a 2011 chevy cruz with less than 100k miles. in the 2 years we've had it we've replaced the transmission, oil cooler, and all the hoses. the furthest we've driven it is 400miles in a trip. we haven't taken it up mountains, and we keep up with maintenance

Transmission fail, too much ignition leaking

My car is leaking oil and coolant. i have gotten an oil change and put coolant in my car but within three days, my car was telling me that it was time for another oil change my car was overheating. then my car started smoking but there was no indication that it was overheating. i looked online and saw that there was a recall in 2011/2012 regarding the same problem. i spoke to gm motors customer service and was told that the recall had been closed so unfortunately, if i want it to be fixed, it has to come out of pocket. i did buy my car pre-owned so i am not aware of what took place before i got it but i haven't done anything to the car for this problem to transpire.

It leaks motor oil everytime it gets changed, theres always a huge pile of oil on the ground, i can also move the gear shift without needing to press the brake pedal . overall its been a hassel to deal with it.

Vehicle stalls sometimes at lights and stop signs. only happens after we've been driving for 30+ miles or more. it doesn't matter if it's highway or city. when it stalls, no dash lights come on, it doesn't idle improperly and there is no warning that the vehicle is going to stall. when i take my foot from the brake at idle and apply it to the gas to move through a green light or stop sign after stopping is when it stalls. i have replaced the valve cover and intake (two weeks ago) and the problem is still occurring. idle does get a little worse with air conditioning on. i've put $2000.00 into this car this year for this same problem. i've visited three different mechanics. nobody can figure out why this is happening. it's been happening unpredictably since we purchased the car in 2016.

Been in and out of shops trying to fix a coolant leaks. i'm no mechanic or anything so i don't think much of weird noises or smells but i have become highly accustomed to the smell of burning coolant. a warning will frequently come on noting the ac was turned off due to high engine heat but only a couple times it completely overheated and forced me to stop driving. any fix seems to just slow down the leak for a little bit to where you don't need any major repairs for a while.

I have been battling my cooling system for the last year radiator keep running hot i have gotten my thermostat done and other things also. i have been on the road and it will run hot, more than once

About a week ago i was driving home when my car decided to shift super hard and my rpm was jumping up scary high then my check engine light turned on and now it won't shift right or my rpm goes up really high the code that popped up was p0700

Me and my kids were driving down the highway when my 2011 chevy cruise just lost power and my engine stopped working... it will not start up at all. mechanic cant figure out why. i've got tons of sensors going out everytime i turn around and i am a mother of a disabled son. we were on at parkway going 65 to 60 mph. it could have been very bad. it happened ed in madison ville ky

Car seems to stall while driving (recurrent/ constant problem for 4 months: car has < 65k miles). engine/ loss of stabilitrack lights come on and engine revs high without speed. lights on radio blink and engine/oil/ coolant leaks. despite attempts to fix problems, car continues to stall out, leaving driver stranded in roadway. engine reboots are temporary fix, but the computer seems to be taking out systems 1 by 1. gm specialist had car for 2 weeks in january & could not solve.

Coolant leak from thermostat housing occuring slowly over time. depleted coolant reservoir caused the engine to overheat after driving for about seven minutes. the vehicle was then pulled over on the freeway shoulder and the coolant added. messages such as "ac off due to high engine to high engine temp" "high coolant temp" "engine temp high-idle engine" appeared with no resolution. thermostat housing was not connected and spewing coolant onto overheating engine causing smoke/steam. vehicle was required to be towed from the location.

My car is hard shifting and no gm dealer can figure it out they say nothing but take my money and my car will alert transmission hot idle engine very scary has even up and stopped going 35 miles in my hometown

Engine losses power on the highway. almost stumbling around to get power back. have to add multiple pints of oil between oil changes.

My lighting has been messed up since i bought the car. all my lights randomly dim, my break lights flicker like there is an electrical problem. my turbo has something wrong with it, but no codes. the car doesn't accelerate like it's supposed to. all this occurs when moving. breaks obviously whenever hit the breaks.

It's been one year and my chevy cruze has overheated twice. the first time the thermostat was wrong along with the thermo pipe that needed to be replaced. and now similar issue is happening where my car smells funny, i turn the heat in and the car will start to over heat and never warm the car.

While driving on highway a message saying reduced engine power came on and vehicle would not accelerate. also the service traction control light came on with it and service stabilitrak came on as well.

Engine light comes on and car will slow down and barely take off. engine is responding to gas pedal but no power in low gear so takes off very slow nearly resulting in wreck. two shops, including transmission shop, state its electronic problem including 'lack of communication'. it happens from being stationary or in process of driving when it loses power suddenly. when engine light goes off it runs ok. dangerous to drive as never know when it'll act up. started about six months ago, and is intermittent.

No reimbursement for same issue, same error code. if i'm being told by different body shops that they continually see the same issue with chevy cruze's, being the loss of turbo boost. shouldn't it be a part of the recall for 2013&14 or at least be made a recall itself. mine is a 2011 with the same error code read as the recall with 2013's. my turbo was replaced right before thanksgiving. happy holidays smh!

Direct impact with 1200 pound cow while driving on a state highway, the airbag did not deploy. entire car engulfed in flames as the engine immediately started fire. totalled. why didn't the airbag deploy? serious injury. serious safety issue. i have purchased 2 cruze's because of the safety features. this is so not safe and so unacceptable

The car engine has shut off twice in 2 weeks while making a right turn on an incline. i slowed down to make the turn/curve and then stepped on the gas and the car died. the dash and radio stay on, but no power to engine. no service lights stay lite on the dash. you have to turn the key off, put in park, open door so radio turns off, give a min and restart. the first time i was pulling off a side road onto a busy road, but i didn't do a complete stop because traffic was clear. i was going 10-15mph. the second time i was on a side road going about 25-30 mph. it was just a mildly sharp curve.

While driving the engine totally looses power and the entire car is shut off and comes to a stop. lots of electrical messages show up, and sometimes the key cannot come out of ignition. after an hour, sometimes it will restart. i have had it towed three times to the dealer. at first they thought it was the negative battery cable, but its still has the problem. starting to not be able to trust this car as its a hazard to drive not knowing when it will cut out and just stop with no power to even have windows roll up.

The engine starts shutting down while sitting at stop lights and has a strong oil smell.

We have had an issue with a chemical smell when the defrost is on since we purchased the vehicle in september 2015. when taken back to the dealership, they could not find any reason for the smell. it fogs the windshield with a film, causes headaches and light headedness. it is what i believe to be the smell of coolant burning, but nothing was ever found so we just continued to drive it. on 8/15/2018, the fan kicked on very high, we received the ac was being shut off error due to the temperature and the check engine light came on. the very odd thing about this is that the temperature never showed it was high. the gauge showed 1 line over half towards the hot side. got it home and let it cool down and realized the coolant reservoir was empty. i refilled it and the fan went back to running as it normally would. i decided to check it again today and the reservoir was empty again. i have not had it looked at again yet, but i think maybe the initial coolant issue just became a larger one. i have seen multiple people complain of both of these issues. has there not been any recall for this? i am going to have it looked at again but i feel like for the amount of people with these issues with this year of cruze something should have been done by now to resolve this.

I put $20 in gas in the vehicle on my way to work. when i pulled out into traffic, the car jerked violently, then proceeded to buck and idle funny all the way till i got to work. from that day till now, everytime i stop at a red light or stop sign, it stalls unless i keep gas petal pressed down.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet cruze. when releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle abruptly jerked and shook. when the brake pedal was completely released, the vehicle jerked with force and shook. the contact had to wait a few seconds for the vehicle to stop jerking and shaking in order to engage the accelerator pedal. the failure was experienced everyday and the stability control, traction control, and check engine indicators illuminated during the failure. the failure normally occurred when the vehicle was driven 42 mph or less. however, when driving 55 mph or more, the failure was not experienced. after the jerking and shaking would end, the vehicle took a few minutes to reach 55 mph or more. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

Vehicle was on highway going to lexington ky from louisville ky. car begin to smoke. hose that was supposedly fixed on radiator was rigged and oil spilled from the hose causing it to go into engine. engine overheated while driving on highway. engine died. had to get car towed from one city to the next. got stranded in another town because could not obtain a rental car because they were closed. since 2016 i have spent over $7000 on getting the same issues or related issues fixed. i have spent over $5000 in rental cars and i still owe $9000 on my car which i purchased from bales automall/bachman in jeffersonville indiana in 2014 with on 28,000 miles. i have kept my services up to date on the vehicle and have documentation for that. it seems once i begin to get oil changes at this location my car begin to decline. i would be told that i had one problem, they would fix it, and then something else would happen. in addition, i have a witness who is a family member who is experiencing the same problems with the same year and model car that she owns. i see her going through the same down spiral steps with her car as i did. it is almost like clockwork. i have read consumer reports about these vehicles and none have been positive. in fact, many who have a turbo engine will or have experienced this same issue. the car is a lemon... it needs to be recalled!! it is unfair that i purchased a car that was no good and that only ran good for two years before having to replace the turbo twice and the engine. let me reiterate.. i still owe $9000 on this car. at this point i am clueless and i feel as if i was taken advantage of. when i reported this to the bbb;gmc and other sources they led me on for weeks knowing that they would not assist in the matter. because of this whole fiasco i have anxiety in which i am taking medication. please help dont know what to do

My 2011 chevy cruz the turbo went out on it replace the turbo replace the manifold replaced the line that goes into the oil pan i have a vacuum leak somewhere i can't find a vacuum leak there sounds like something is burning underneath the seats and sometimes it is hard to shift it doesn't shift right.also the lights on the front they flicker and blank the seatbelts don't like to come out when you clicki was driving down the road one day i was trying to get out on the expressway coming off of the ramp trying to get spayed and there was no power and didn't want to go any faster by the time i got home it sounded like it was whistling and no power at all the turbos fix brand new the manifold brand new it's all brand new white next to his car is giving me a problem after problem

My car is only at 91k miles, and my cylinder 3 is not compressing anymore, more than likely due to piston ring failure.

Smells like it's burning, smokes into the inside. it's been numerous times in the shop but it keeps doing the same. electrical problems with the driver seat and lighting also

It's been going off and on every since i first got the car i smell a burning smell and it loses power is stalls and the dealership keep telling me it's just air getting into it but i know it's my turbo because my neighbor has one her turbo went out and i have two other friends that has one and both their turbo went out and now it's making a knocking noise and everyone that i have look at it say it's the turbo it's the wastegate i don't drive my car much and only has 26,000 miles on it because i'm afraid to drive it i've had it fixed more than 10 times it had a oil leak where would catch on fire but the dealership put turbo fans in instead of giving me a new motor so it's still flames up from the oil pan but they say the turbo fans is going to blow the fire out so it's not going to hurt me but i don't drive it far because i'm scared when it gets hot that's going to catch on fire and nobody would give me anything for it that's why i still have the car but i'm willing to just take a big loss and just let them have it back the doors open without touching the car with the electrical system the lights are just go out in the dash just random so i can't drive it at night i hope you can see the oil on the pictures it just shoots all over the place and when i take it to the dealership they say the recall is not on my car they have a recall on the turbo and the vacuum system but they run my vin number and say it's not on my car when i first got this car it was quiet it caught on fire from an oil leak they fixed it now it sounds like a truck you can hear it three blocks away is stalls all the time and they tell me it's the gas i'm using i switch to premium gas and it still does it this car is junk i hope nobody ever buys it chevy should be shut down

The oil filter hausing is liquidating oil every time that i make a oil change

The chevrolet cruze's water coolant outlet has cracked three times now. this is a plastic piece that cracks under heat and leaks radiator fluid.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that the vehicle jerked, lunged, and lost power. also, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to bmw of alexandria (499 s pickett st, alexandria, va 22304, (703) 684-8500) where it was diagnosed that the spark plugs needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel injectors needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired, but the failure recurred. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 13v044000 (electrical system); however, the vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 37,000.

Oil leaking just below dipstick. not from the dipstick itself but from a horizontal crease below it. oil leaked onto heat shield and down onto exhaust. burning smell comes through air vents making it hard to breathe in cab. noticed this after driving on the interstate and minor city traffic.

Got the car from drivetime on 04/25/16 from drivetime in highland indiana. not even 30 days when i was driving to go to work something popped up on my screen saying a/c cutting off due to engine over heating. i pulled over and called aeverex and pepboys and was told to not drive the car. aeveree donex had to have a tow company come and have the car towed which my car was in the shop for 2 to 3 days because they didnt have the part. got my car back on 5/17/16. i have a list of things that had to be done to the car. now the car is doing the same thing again. a/c cutting off due to over heating. looked under the hood and the coolant is leaking and the reservoir is empty. it didnt give off no noticed that something was wrong with this car the car. im taking this car to the shop once again for the same problem. i looked online and come to find out the 2011 chevy cruze has a recall on the cruze due to coolant leaking. i also had taken it to the shop and was told it was the water pump which i already had it replaced once. i also emailed the gm and explained my issue and was told that their was no recall on my car which i find to be untrue. something is wrong with this car. i also have the papers from pep boys on what was done the 1st time. once i get it to the shop tommorow i will update what was done again.

Waterpump was leaking and had to be replaced

After starting the vehicle and driving forward the dash screen started to show different "check" warnings. check stability control, check power steering. the check engine light came on as so did most of the dash indicator lights. the power steering stopped and the engine temporarily quit. the engine responded again and while driving the dash went dark and the car died. i had to turn the ignition off and restart the car. this is the third time this has occurred. the last event was while driving through a parking lot.

I parked my car in a parking lot to go into a store and when i came back immediately after i started it under the hood there was a lot of smoke even after i turned it off there was still smoke everywhere.

Powering down also ac.some times stop runing.the pvc was not made right had to replace it was cauesing a vac. leak with no recall.now there is a posting about the intake exioes manfold broken down may have to replace mother and canylt ventor.a again no recall.

Pcv valve busted and had to have the intake manifold and valve/cam cover replaced. bill was $1078.00 dollars. only had to pay $200.00 dollars because dealer wanted to send parts back to gm after i asked for old parts. gm does not have a fix for why these pcv failures happen.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet cruze. while the contact's granddaughter was driving approximately 60 mph, the voice command warned her to "turn off engine hot". the vehicle was taken to cheaps chevrolet dealer located flemingsburg, ky where it was diagnosed that the o ring needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken back to cheaps chevrolet dealer where the thermostat was replaced; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000. the vin was not available.

Reporting an engine fire on sunday july 23, 2017. the 2011 cruze was totaled by the engine fire. the vehicle was stationary parked in front of my home. to my knowledge no mechanical problems. lindsay chevrolet of woodbridge, va put new front and rear brakes on my car in mid july also an oil change with a 27 point engine check. i do not have pictures on my computer. if you need pictures let me know and i would be happy to mail them to you

In the last 4 months my tracking control, stability traction control, and reduce engine power light stays on. i have had knock censor replaced, value covers but nothing has worked. my car constantly cuts off in in the middle of traffic and three times on the freeway at 65 miles. the car is very unsafe and yet there are no recalls on my car.

Tamara recall transmission, valve cover, brake sensor, throttle sensor , this car has gave me problems after problems , every month it's literallg something new i have about 20 pages of receipts

While i was driving on the highway, a warning came on saying that my a/c was turned off because my engine was overheating and my check engine light came on. my temperature gauge was on cold. when i first took my car to the dealership, they could not figure out what was wrong. they cleared the codes and told me to come back if the warning came back on. three weeks later, the warning came on again when driving on the highway. the first time the warning came on, i had been driving for about 6 hours. after the codes were cleared, the warning came back on when i had been driving for about 2.5 hours. in the two weeks between the warning coming back on and when i took it back to the dealership, sometimes the warning would come on right away when i turned on the car. other times, it would take 10 mins of driving before it would come on. when i drove, the temperature gauge would fluctuate between cold and halfway between cold and hot. after fluctuating for a few minutes, it would go to cold and the warning would come on. i took it back and the dealership told me that my coolant thermostat sensor and housing needed replacing. the car had error codes p0118 and p0117. as this problem could cause my engine to overheat and it seems like it is a common problem with the chevy cruze, i do not understand why there has not been a recall yet. the warning occurred with a little less than 55,000 miles on the car.

Coolant leaking under pressure from water outlet & water pump. causes check engine light to malfunction as well as engine coolant temperature sensor & radiator control temperature sensor.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to courtesy chevrolet (1233 e camelback rd, phoenix, az 85014, (602) 457-3232) for diagnostic testing where the contact was informed that the intake manifolds and pcv valve needed to be replaced. the contact mentioned that the vehicle had to be repaired twice for this failure within a 45,000 to 50,000 mile range. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 124,000.

Bought this car used with 51k miles a month ago. drove great the first week, after that loses powerupon acceleration and is slow to get up to speed. while driving just now, the car was losing power so i decided to hit the gas harder and instead of going faster the the stability track light came on. i am starting to wonder if i made a bad decision purchasing this car. it had trouble going up hill on the highway last wk. this car is too compact to have speed issues.
