Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

My fuel tank is leaking and this is apparently an issue that gm is aware of, as they have discontinued the fuel tank. this is a major safety issue and should be subject to recall. *js

Noted fuel smell under car. found puddle of fuel and corroded fuel lines at a plastic chassis bracket. lines are coming from the pump running forward under the passenger door. witnessed fuel dripping. fuel lines are only inches from exhaust pipe which could be a source of ignition fire. several online discussion boards mention this same issue as a problem with the cobalt. there is a recall on the fuel pump but not on the fuel lines? this defect/poor quality fuel line material should be recalled as its a major fire/safety issue. *tr

Owner of a 2008 chevy cobalt, recently started having a strong smell of gasoline in and around vehicle after driving and even after the car had sat over night. had vehicle diagnosed and was told that fuel was leaking on top of the fuel tank. upon research i found that there have been several recalls and many complaints for this exact problem, but recalls are only in certain states. i'm sorry chevrolet doesn't take the safety of it's customers seriously as i no longer feel safe driving my young children in this car. chevrolet please explain how being in a different state changes the fact that you made a car with yet another defective part yet you will not take responsibility for all the vehicles that you put it in??? *tr

Once my ignition switch was repaired per the recall, i began smelling gas inside and outside of the vehicle. no check engine light has come on but the smell has been getting worse and worse. when the car sits for a long or short period of time it has difficulty starting; also since the ignition switch was replaced an electrical issue began. *tr

Strong smell of gasoline. fuel leaking onto the ground. repair garage stated the problems was cracked port on the fuel pump exactly like existing recall states (gm campaign number 12190). according to gm my vehicle is not part of the recall even though it is the same make, model and year, with the same defect. this recall needs to be expanded to include other vehicles (including my own) that are clearly defective. *tr

I received a letter from chevrolet warning me of the chance of a leak in a part leading to a fuel pump and the chance of a vehicle fire from the leak of gasoline. they did not offer to replace the part. i could not believe this. i think of the senario where one driving on the highway late at night and the leak of gasoline occurs in a desolate area. chevrolet says to take the car to a chevrolet dealer when you smell the gasoline. an ignition spark can cause a fire in your vehicle. the car should immediately be parked and the engine shut off. chevrolet's response is ridiculous. that part should be replaced before that senario occurs. please make chevrolet recall the 2008 cobalt before someone is seriously injured. *tr

Strong odor of fuel coming form the fuel pump / tank area. some of the various models & years were recalled, but not this car. when the car became hard to start, i replaced the fuel pump myself and that solved the problem and the fuel odor went away. we took the car to the chevrolet dealer in december of 2011 to address an unrelated recall. they were made aware of the problem and acknowledged that there was a problem but stated "this car was not covered by a recall". in the last few weeks we didn't park the car inside of the garage because we thought it would catch fire. *tr

The car began smelling strongly of gas and became difficult to start. there is a leak in the fuel system. there are recalls due to fuel leaks in my state for the 2007 and 2009 cobalt, however, for my 2008 model the recall is only in arizona. my vehicle is having the same issues and should be recalled as well. *tr

The cabin of the vehicle had the smell of fuel fumes, especially when filling up the vehicle. saw on tv that the cobalt had a fuel system recall and assumed that was the problem. the problem was the fuel tank was cracked at the fill neck. i had to pay to replace the fuel tank ($690), gm paid for the part being recalled. *tr

Gas fumes were smelled by my daughters passengers as they carpooled to college. when parked, i smelled gas fumes coming from the vehicle for up to 5 hours. my daughter could not use vehicle for fear of fire incident. i reported a severe decline in fuel economy for this vehicle, months ago. prior to bringing the vehicle to my mechanic, i checked with the dealer for a recall on this model year, who reported no recall . on thursday september 27th, 2012 mechanic discovered fuel leak from the fuel/propulsion system. i purchased a new fuel pump and filter and it was replaced. fuel efficiency still severely deficient. *tr

Purchased the car from don carlson hyundai in tulsa, oklahoma on the evening of 19 september 2012 and drove it to our home in edmond, oklahoma, and by the time we got home there was a strong fuel smell. the dealer had just told us that the car had just had the windshield replaced, so we just chalked it up to the curing of the adhesives they used installing the windshield, but it is now the 28th of september 2012, the odor is getting stronger, and the car is becoming more and more difficult to start. you have to let it crank and crank before it will finally start, almost like it is flooded as back in the old days of carbs. this does not seem to be an isolated problem with all the problems being reported on various sites and it seems to be one that i would deem as an extreme safety issue with it relating to gasoline and gasoline fumes. with our car, i have looked under it and have seen no signs of puddling, which concerns me of where it might be collecting. *tr

My vehicle started have a slight gas odor when stopped or parked. within a couple of days the gas smell from fumes are very strong. i have to drive with the windows down to even use the vehicle (living in texas is it hot and makes it hotter with the window down) the car seems to now make a clicking noise when starting, and seems to not have the gas mileage that it use to. i am afraid of something igniting the gas with such strong fumes. i called parkway chevrolet in tomball texas as was told that a recall was coming, but it was not out yet. i was told that i have to pay out of pocket or fear ignition of the fumes from the vehicle. we are in the middle of international adoption and money is tight. can you give any indication of when this would be an actual recall? and when it might be mailed out? it saddens me to see that they know a recall is coming and wont fix a vehicle with apparent dangers. also now my passenger airbag light is coming on saying that it needs attention. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 35 mph, a strong odor of fuel emitted inside of the vehicle. when parked, the contact would also smell an odor of fuel outside of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an authorize dealer who stated the fuel pump would need to be replaced. the vehicle was in the process of being repaired. the manufacturer was notified and they informed the service warranty expired. the approximate failure mileage was 54,000.

Within the past few weeks i have noticed a strong smell of gas outside my car. the smell is very strong right after making a trip, even short trips, and still has strong smell when car hasn't been used. others have noticed the gas smell when approaching my car while it is running and after i stop the car! there is nothing leaking out from under my car or around the motor that i can see. it is beginning to have smell in my car now, and makes me very nervous to drive it cause i don't know what is causing this and if it will catch fire!!! something needs to be done about this serious issue!! *tr

I have a 2008 chevy cobalt that we smelled gas fumes coming from back seat and at rear of vehicle, after inspecting vehicle found gas leak from top of gas tank from where the fuel pump goes into the tank, there is recall notices for 06,07,09 and so forth for texas but not for the 2008 in texas and i think it should be united states wide as this is could cause a major fire and kill innocent people in all states not just the ones with hot weather, as it is the vehicle is at dealer now for recall on power steering defect and checking on gas leak to see if it is coming from top of gas tank. *tr

Upon parking my 2008 cobalt, i could smell raw (unburned) gas. i did not see any drips on the ground but when i inspected underneath the vehicle; the fuel pump area near the gas tank, i could see liquid gas trails coming down and a build up of dirt which had coated the surrounding area due to the gas that had leaked and dried. the cobalt was hesitating, the engine was surging and i also noticed a small drop in fuel mileage. i took my cobalt to a local repair shop and they told me there was a crack in the fuel pump assembly and showed me the fuel pump assembly and i observed a leak at the connection where the fuel lines are attached to the fuel pump. they were unable to repair the leak because it is all plastic so they replaced the fuel pump assembly. it appears that in time this new assembly will fail again due to its design and i will have a recurring problem. *tr

My fuel pump was leaking causing severe fuel loss while driving. i understand that there was a campaign (226b) that corrected this defect. the dealer told me my vehicle had the corrected fuel pump. apparently the corrected fuel pump did not address the issue entirely. i am out $854.16 for something that there is an open campaign against. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while traveling 35 mph, the contact smelled an abnormal gasoline odor. the vehicle was later taken to the dealer where it was confirmed that the fuel pump failed, similar to the failure described in nhtsa campaign id number 09v419000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump). the vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was contacted regarding the failure. the failure mileage was unavailable and the current mileage was 50,000.

My vehicle had a strong gasoline smell which persisted although i could find no trace of leakage. when i took it to my independent repair facility i was informed that the pump had a cracked supply port on the fuel pump which was leaking when the current was applied, being that this is my only vehicle, i was compelled to have the repair done at a cost to me of $961.42 which included the replacement of the fuel filter as my mechanic advised me that not replacing the filter would impede the efficiency of the new pump module. the following day, i inquired of chevrolet as to whether this problem was involved in any ongoing recall and was told at that time that it was not. in november, i was notified by mail that this vehicle was now included in a safety recall (12190) [nhtsa# 12v459] following the instructions included in my correspondence, i took the vehicle into a chevrolet dealer (power chevrolet / mesa, az) at which time the module was inspected and found to be acceptable and approved. i submitted my documentation for, and requested a full reimbursement. in early january of this year i received a check in the amount of $700.00. when i contacted chevy as to why i did not receive full reimbursement, i was told that my independent repair facility had "over charged" me for the fuel pump module and, had i taken it to the dealer initially, it is standard procedure to not replace the fuel filter!! in the correspondence i received from chevrolet informing me of this safety recall it is stated in two places that this situation would be rectified "at no cost" to me. after many ambiguous phone calls i was informed that the $700.00 was a "final decision". what can be done to inform other owners of this vehicle that they cannot expect full reimbursement, other than expressing my dissatisfaction on my social network? ref: chevy case#[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

An heavy smell of fuel caused me to take this car to a mechanic who determined that the fuel pump was leaking when the car was running. he replaced the pump and fuel lines. i understand there is a recall on these cars for model year 2007 and 2008. i called gm and was told the recall is vin specific :( this model year should be included in this recall! *tr

The car had small smell of gas come from the ac vents ,but when i got out of the car the smell got stronger so i looked around the vehicle to see where it came from, yet there was no sign of the leak but later that day i saw a small spot of water near the back of the car at first but it was too far back to be water at first so i checked where this leak came from and that's when i saw it coming from the fuel tank and already its been almost three weeks and became worst and the car may explode. *tr *js

Gasoline is visibly leaking from the fuel pump module above the fuel tank. there is also a strong odor of gasoline from beneath the car. this defect has been recognized by gm and recalled for 2006-07 model years, but 2008 and newer model years that also have the problem are not covered by that recall. *tr

My complaint is in reference to a fuel leak from the top of the fuel tank. after going on line i noticed that there has been a problem with 2006 through the 2008 model year cobalt. i feel this is a safety hazard as the exhaust pipe passes below the fuel tank. this problem should have been fixed with the 2007 recall as i have heard there is one. what is required to have a recall for safety on the 2008 model year. this is a costly repair and the burden should be on the manufacture to correct. again this is a safety hazard and is playing with peoples lives and also allowing fumes to escape into the air. *tr

I noticed my car had a hard time starting on thursday, may 3, 2012. then on friday, may 4, 2012, i began to smell gas heavily in my car. by saturday, my car had a hard time starting. after i turned on the car, i received again a heavy odor of gas inside my car. i did not drive my car the entire week of may 7 - 11, 2012. i have a mechanic check my car and found gas leaking onto my gas tank. i then searched the internet and found that similar descriptions of faultiness had been reported for 2007 models and i came upon this website again with similar complaints about 2008 models. *tr

2008 cobalt now with 70k miles has strong gasoline odor and when at idle leaks excessive amount of fuel. i have a newborn baby and a 1yr old toddler and with a problem that severe i can't even drive this car and feel safe. i also did research online about this problem and there are many chevy cobalts with fuel problems. this is a huge safety issue and would like to see a recall for 2008 not only 2006-2007 cobalts. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that gasoline fuel was leaking. the smell had become overpowering from inside of the vehicle. the contact took the vehicle to have a routine oil change performed but was denied because of the offensively overpowering odor. the contact was told that the vehicle possible exhibited a crack in the fuel pump. the contact was very concerned that the smell would become permanent. the dealer was notified who stated that before the vehicle could be brought to the dealer for a diagnosis, they would have to first perform further research for the failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 57,000.

Late 2011 my car starting having issues with the rpms going up and down while i was driving at a steady pace. by dec 2011 my car smelled like it had a small fuel leak; one that i could only smell while my car was idling. since february 2012 the smell of gasoline has gone from a faint smell while idling to an almost unbearable smell that i can smell even doing 70+ mph on the freeway. with the fuel lines not allowing enough fuel to be pumped into my engine it also does not like to start if it has been sitting for more than a few hours. i have to turn the key let the engine turn over a few times, let it sit, then attempt to start it up again. chevy has had this problem with their cobalt's since they have started making them it seems. they have not fixed the problem with the 2008's they have just chosen to ignore that our cars have this issue as well. when i call the dealership they tell me that the 2008 models do not have the issue that the earlier models had, but they are more than happy to diagnose the problem for me at a cost of $150 and they can fix it at double the price anywhere else because they are a dealership. no thank you! i will not pay chevy to fix a problem that they have caused and refuse to fix. i do know that i will not be buying another chevy once i am able to get rid of this car. *tt

Since september 2011 i have noticed a significant decrease in fuel efficiency. the fuel efficiency has gotten worse since then. i now get about 12 miles to the gallon. tires are checked and i use fuel with no ethanol. i have seen recalls on the 2007 models for the fuel pump and why not for the 2008 model? this has become a financial nightmare. i bought the car in louisiana where i live. *tt

Fuel leaks from fuel tank filler neck. verified that fuel was not coming from fuel pump as was addressed in the current recall for model year 2007. a check of online forums resulted in several owners experiencing the same problem, being referred to the fuel pump recall, and the problem not being addressed. *tr

I bought the vehicle new. i was driving the vehicle and it cut off. i heard a pop. vehicle would not crank back up. i parked, locked vehicle and had to walk to get help. by the time i returned, the vehicle was gone. the vehicle had caught fire after i left to get help and the police called the fire departement and had fire put out and vehicle towed. *tr
