We have classified the 248 complaints from 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
The vehicle has a built in anti theft system . this system is controlled by a computer . as well as an etching in the key that is recognized by the ignition . this has been an on going problem for us where the anti theft system will engage while you are driving . when this happens you lose your instrumentation, power steering , your transmission slips and your engine sputters . this has happened to us at high speed in the freeway , slow speed on city streets and everything in between . the real issue is that it is so sporadic that our local gm dealer is unable to assess the issue . *tr
I placed my car in park last night, but for some reason my key got stuck in the ignition. the ignition would not turn back to the lock position for the key to be released. i checked my car's wheels to make sure they were straight and every other thing that i could think of to try and make the key go to the lock position. after reading the manual, i was able to find that there was a cap on the panel under the steering column, that once removed, contained an emergency release button that when pushing it allowed for the ignition to be turned to the lock position and they key to be released. i have started my car several other times and encountered the same problem. i did a fair amount of research and read a number of reviews on the internet, and i came to realize this is a rather common problem in the chevy cobalt. it now seems that i will have to pay several hundred dollars to have this common problem diagnosed and remedied, so that i won't have to push a special button for my car to turn completely off and have my key released from the ignition every time i drive. *tr
The ignition switch wouldn't turn when i inserted the key, the key got stuck. i had to play with it for it to finally turn. i took it to a car locksmith and had another key made for the car which cost me $100.00. yesterday, october 8, 2013 i begin to encounter the same problem all over again. the key gets stuck in the ignition switch and the ignition switch does not turn. i have to jiggle and play with it for the key to finally turn and the car turn on. i have read that numerous people have posted very similar complaints with the chevrolet cobalts. it appears that this may clearly qualify as a recall issue. i should not have to go through this time and time again. *tr
On march 4, 2011 i had my 2007 cobalt's electrical power steering fixed due to the recall i received in the mail. this was as emich chevorlet in colorado. recently i have been having issues making turns at slower speeds and sometime unable to turn at all. i contacted my personal shop and was told the dealer needed to do the work and the recall should have fixed this defunct part. i contacted the dealer today who straight away told me it was not their problem. if you scour the internet numerous people are still posting that even after the recall these parts (steering) are still failing and causing accidents. i should not have top pay for a part that cannot last a year and 3 days. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the driver crashed into another vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy with the force of the impact. the contact suffered from injuries to the head, back and neck area. a police report was filed of the incident. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to a salvage facility. the contact experienced the failure consequence as mentioned in the recall under nhtsa campaign id number 14v047000 (air bags , electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 38,000. the vin was unavailable.
Car will not turn off, key goes to acc then wont turn any farther. i have to push the shifter button before it will release the key. *tr
I was notified early march that my car was part of a recall for the ignition switch, safety recall 13454. it indicated parts would be available beinging in april 2014. i am seriously disturbed that it is still not fixed as i am a senior citizen and have missed numerous doctor's and physical therapy appointments for fear of taking the car out. i have followed all the directions to the letter, taking all items from my key ring. as noted it is a serious risk to me and my health and my state of mind. i want to know when my car will be repaired as i have called findlay chevrolet and they keep giving me the same old story, "parts are not in yet!!" it is not acceptable to have to wait for such a long time to be able to have peace and comfort back in my life. *tt
Have not had an accident yet even though my automobile is the subject of a safety recall. the ignition switch has to be replaced and i have been advised the dealer will make the necessary repair at no cost to me. my problem is that even though i have contacted the dealer and have provided the requested information, it seems that parts are not available, at least to my dealer. i called them again today and the dealer says they have hundreds of repair requests but have only received eleven (11) switches. my chevrolet dealer is herrin gear chevrolet, 1685 high street, jackson, ms. are all chevrolet dealers experiencing the same delay in receiving the necessary parts? the safety recall is 13454. if i have contacted the incorrect department will you please advise so that i can route my concerns to the appropriate people? thanks *tr
My husband bought his car nov.6, 2008 and since that we didn't have a problem anything but that one window on the right of the back seat won't move. anyway, on oct.22, 2011, my husband was coming home from work when the power steering went off, thank god he made it safe to our home. on monday, he made the appointment to the dealer place for the recall we kept on putting off. so the following morning, tuesday, the dealer replaced the electric power steering. the car was working fine that whole day. the next morning, the car won't do anything at all. the un/lock button won't work as if there's no power and the car won't start. *tt
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle would not start upon turning the key in the ignition more than once. the contact had to wait and within a few minutes the vehicle would restart after more than one attempt. the vehicle had also stalled without warning. the air bag sensor light illuminated and continued to illuminate at random. the vehicle was not taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the drivers seat had deteriorated to the point that the frame was loose and the padding was exposed. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that the fronts drivers seat needed to be replaced. the front drivers seat was replaced. the air bag sensor, vehicle stalling and failure with the key not turning in the ignition continued to recur. the contact was included in nhtsa campaign id number:14v047000 (air bags and electrical system) and the authorized dealer stated that the part would not be available until mid april. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30000. updated 06/17/14*lj
Purchased vehicle brand new in 2007 and no problems till now. 22 year old daughter driving vehicle, she is a college student. she drives in major city daily and driving home from school gauge cluster went crazy and power steering went out. scaring her, she parked the car in a church lot and i sent the car to a dealer the next day. i had found on the internet that there was a recall on the power steering assist motor and informed the dealership of such when the work was to be done. they replaced the motor under the recall but also charged me $780.00 to replace the steering column which they said was bad. i have found 1000 + complaints on the internet of people saying their steering columns were supposedly bad as well with 1 person having theirs replaced 3 times now. she picked the car up and 2 weeks later the same thing occurs again. the dealership looks at it for 4 days and claim they can't find anything wrong so do nothing but investigate. they claim the codes were erased on the computer because we drove it after the fault but the car was parked and immediately hauled to the dealer on a flatbed truck. as i said before there are well over 1,000 complaints on the internet that i have found myself so i am sure there are a lot more. as soon as i can afford it this car will be put in town square with a big lemon sign on it and she will be driving something other than gm. *tr
I received a recall on the power steering. i called them and told them that my power steering had gone out twice on the car while i was driving it. they told me to bring it in immediately since i was experiencing problems. i brought it in and they fixed it promptly but ever since i have been having other electrical problems with the blinkers not clicking off, the dashboard lights coming on and off. i also had a problem with my gas tank leaking. i had someone to fix it because it was pouring gas out and i didn't have the money to pay what a dealer would charge. several months after i had it fixed i got recall in the mail for the faulty gas tank. i also had a wheel bearing that went out but the car was still under warranty and the dealer fixed it free of charge. *tr
Strong smell of gas when im driving the car in and outside. the car has trouble starting, i had it checked and was told there was a fuel leak. called gm and was told even though their was a special coverage for my state they would not fix the leak. this is a dangerous leak due to a faulty plastic part. i hope my family doesn't die from inhaling fumes or blow up. kinda makes you think its another pinto exploding gas tank deal. i guess they wont do anything until someone dies. i have had many problems with this car starting a week after i bought it new. knocking when the engine starts, using oil now, airbags not working, small electrical things keep going wrong. when i take it in im told they cant reproduce the problems. *kb
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated. the battery was disconnected to and the key became stuck in the ignition. the vehicle was diagnosed by a dealer. the diagnosis was to replace the gear shift. the vehicle was repaired. the front drivers seat and the front passenger seat air bag illuminated when the front passenger and driver are in the vehicle or if no one is seated in the front passenger's side. the dealer was not able to diagnose the airbag failure. the failure still recurred. the battery had to be replaced and the codes had to be reprogrammed due to having to disconnect the battery to remove the key more than once. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not taken back to an authorized dealer for an inspection. the approximate failure mileage was 17000. *tr
My husband and i purchased the vehicle in question in april 2007, at approx. 50,000 miles my car started to miss, then began to accelerate on its own and lunge as i was coming to a stop. we brought the car back to dealer where purchased, we were then sent on "wild goose chase," first we were told it was a fuel pedal sensor, nxt they replaced the computer, followed by the wiring harness, this however, did not fix the problem, we took it back for a fourth time and the ended up rebuilding the head on the motor, car has not ran correctly ever since. we tried to file a lemon law claim but needed four receipts to prove warranty work, we had three and after the fourth when picked up car the dealer would not release fourth, that was a year ago. my car now has 88,000 miles on it, it is beginning to idle rough again and when i put fuel in it, the car does not want to start, at first it will not do anything, and then it will try to turn over but will not start i then have to slam the fuel to it in order to get it started, once it starts it will idle rough and i have to keep giving it fuel in order for the idle to smooth. this is the worst vehicle i have ever owned, i will be hard pressed to ever buy another chevy!!!!!!! *tr
Driving down the road and the airbag on the passengers side shuts off with a passenger in the seat. service airbag light goes on. shut the car off and restart then it will be fine for a while. i think it is sensor on the seatbelt retractor. *tr
2007 chevrolet cobalt. consumer writes in regards to vehicle ignition replaced. *smd the consumer stated she went to the dealer, to have the ignition replaced, and it cost $478.31. the consumer stated the ignition was replaced twice. *jb
i have had to replace the sway bar links, control arm bushing and the shifter in order to get my car inspected this year. another problem i have is the blinkers not making the clicking sound, they work but i was told i have to replace my front speaker. i feel like that is a lot to go wrong with a vehicle in one year. i also think that these problems shouldn't have happened this early. i only have 57,000 miles on my car. something should be done with these vehicles seeing how there are many other people having the same problems with their cars.
Tl* the contact owns 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for nhtsa recall campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering: electric power assist system) for the power steering. the contact stated that the remedy failed to repair the problem and as a result, the gauges stopped working. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who decided to have the circuit cleared, but that the failure still occurred. the contact stated that the air conditioning failed as well. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 66,690.
While driving down the road all power windows quit, at a later date the car started idling rough, air bag light came on this continued for some time then all the dash lights and head lights started going crazy as well as the instrument panel gauges going haywire, this is a continuing problem as dealers have no clue what's wrong. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that after inserting the key in the ignition, all of the warning lights on the instrument panel illuminated and the power steering assist failed. the contact was able to drive the vehicle and the power steering assist functioned as normal, but the warning lights remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where they advised that the electrical ignition failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact mentioned that she started to notice the failure after having recall repairs performed on the vehicle under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering). the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000. the current mileage was approximately 101,000. the vin was unavailable.
Headlights will not turn off. i have to unplug fuses to prevent battery from draining. i was told by dealer that this was a failure of the body control modular. upon further research, there are many other people with this issue and it is apparently a design flaw. water is able to get under the cover and flood the bcm, causing it to fail. will cost over $500 to repair. i am a broke college student. *tr
Rear window defrost stopped working. was told by dealer that the connector for the rear defrost was melted. upon doing research on defective rear defroster on 2007 chevy cobalt, this appears to be a common problem with this make/model/year. i believe there should be a recall for this part. *tr
The key can not be removed from the ignition switch. eventhough the shifter is in the park position. the key does not return to the remove position. you can turn the engine off, but the key remains in the accessory position so the battery runs down. repeated efforts of cycling the shifter and turning the wheel does not rectify the problem. when i took it to the dealer the shifter was replaced at a cost of $287. fortunately, this happened when i returned home and was able to park in my own garage. it would have been unfortunate if i had been on a trip or an important errand and would have to left the key in the ignition in a public area. when i "googled" this problem on the internet in an effort to find a simple solution, i found numerous similar complaints in regards to the cobalt car. *tr
Tl* the contact owns 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the key became stuck in the ignition while the vehicle was shut off. the contact was unable to lock the doors to the vehicle when the failure occurred. the dealer advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnosis. the manufacturer was contacted and attempted to walk the contact through manually releases the key but to no avail. the key remained stuck in the ignition. the vehicle was not repaired. the current and failure mileage was 50,058.
Driving down the road the power steering light comes on, power steering goes out, rpm, speedometer and fuel gauges go to zero then rapidly move back and forth, transmission slips, check engine light and auto theft lights come on. i have had the power steering recall fixed. this has happened multiple times now. at first it would go away if the vehicle was restarted, however, now i have to have it towed to the dealership to have it fixed. this will be the second trip to the dealership in 1.5 weeks. *tr
The left front speaker started going out (couldn't hear words or music well). soon after it completely quit working and when it quit so did the right side. it's only the door speakers. the back ones work fine.
Since vehicle was new issues with radio and left speaker, dash lights flashing on and off, complaints to dealer went un-resolved until warranty was over then they wanted to look at it. now at 52,000 miles instrument panel and tail lights went out, static on radio. found blown fuse, replaced and it blew out again, leaving me with no instrument panel lights or tail lights. have found similar complaints on other web sites. as of present time no solution to the issue. failure occurred at 5am while driving on the interstate. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds the indicator sound is not functioning. he stated that they are functioning but the noise that occurred when signaling is the failure. the vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer. the failure mileage was 37,000. the vin was unavailable.
Speakers on the front left of the car had stopped working. there where no radio or turn signal sounds. i am not exactly sure of the date of any of the incidences but one of the times i had 1of the speakers they ordered factory speakers and they also stopped working. i brought it to there attention again and they said that they would look into it and get back to me. i never got an answer and i got busy with work andnlife in general. the car was still under warranty when i brought it up. when i mentioned it again the answer i got was that they could order new (stock) speakers and i was told the cost. this would have been a second replacement and may have worked but i didn't feel i should be the person paying for them. i feel they should have fixed them in the first place. *tr
When the vehicle is turned off, the steering column locks as does the ignition and the car cannot be restarted. the car has been stranded several times due to this defect. *tr
The complaint is for the radio in my car. it was working fine then it started having issues with the speakers cutting in and out. the problem i have is with the radio it's tided into the safety features of the car and lets you know if you have an issue with your car. if you forget your seatbelt it dings letting you know it hasn't been buckled and keeps dinging until you put it on. if you turn your blinker is on it makes a noise with the blinker so you know it?s on. if your blinker stays on it lets you know to turn it off. if your car has mechanical issues it will dings letting you know something?s wrong. as it sits now my two front speakers don?t work at all so i don?t know if something is going on with my car beforehand. if my car was to overheat i wouldn't know until it actually broke down on me. at least if i was to hear a chime or the warning before any damage could happen that would be helpful. also this is supposed to be a safety feature for the car and the person driving it. i've read that this is very common in this model car and i would like to have this fixed. hers one of the links you can read for yourself. http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-cobalt/tduj7vfpaec901fn4. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact received notification of nhtsa recall number: 10v073000 ( steering:electric power assist system) and took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs in september 2010. shortly after the recall was performed, the contact started having electrical issues intermittently. when the electrical failure occurred she noticed that the power steering warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel, the radio would shut on and off, a picture of a lock symbol would illuminate on the instrument panel and all the lights on the vehicle would flash on and off, including the exterior lights. once the vehicle was powered off and then on it would reset itself and perform as normal. the failure recurred intermittently. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer did not offer any assistance. no repairs were performed. the current mileage was 137,000 and the failure mileages were 83,000.
Power steering, all electrical, gauges, and lights would flash , steering covered under recall, but have now had a few electrical problems since. *tr
My car was running and getting warmed up, then suddenly the locks start going off and on, repeatedly. it has continued to do this and the car will not stay locked. it does this whether it is off or on now. it is constant. the power locks no longer work and you can't use the door handle to unlock the car from the inside, you must manually pull the lock "up" and to lock the car you must manually push all the door lock knobs down, but that doesn't matter because it will not stay locked. in addition to this electrical issue the front speakers go off and on at random. also, the turn signal remains on even after the full turn has been made. the car will randomly shut off while it's being driven. it doesn't matter if you are going 70 mph or 20 mph. also the power steering went out on my car, that was recalled and has since been replaced, but the steering still malfunctions. my car was leaking fuel the summer of 2012, after the fuel pump module was replaced the gas tank had to be replaced months later because the car continued to leak gasoline. there are many other countless issues with this car. i am surprised and fortunate that there haven't been any injuries or fatalities while operating this death trap. i will never purchase another gm. *tr

The left front speaker started going out (couldn't hear words or music well). soon after it completely quit working and when it quit so did the right side. it's only the door speakers. the back ones work fine. *tr
The key gets stuck in the ignition and drains the battery. *tr
The warning chimes for seatbelt ,low fuel, headlights, key in ignition, turn signals,ect.. do not work. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the lights on the instrument panel intermittently shut on and off. the dealer stated that the light sensor caused the failure to occur. the warranty was valid until march 25, 2010; however, the dealer has not repaired the vehicle. the contact has taken the vehicle into the dealer three times in the past month. the failure has occurred since the vehicle was purchased. the contact is concerned about the safety risk while driving at night. the failure mileage was 56 and the current mileage was 18000.
I have a 2007 colbalt lt and had to have the brakes and struts replaced at 40,000 miles. the front of the car was shaking when putting on the brakes and had a loud noise. i took the car to a repair shop when they replaced the brakes and struts. the struts shouldn't go up this quick. now the key gets stuck in the ignition. *tr
I was driving and the power steering light came on, the all of a sudden the steering wheel was hard to turn, and i was unable to make a right or left turn. when i did try turning, my car almost hit another car that was stopped at the light because i did not have enough strength to turn the wheel all the way. it has progressively got worse and when i took the car into a chevy service dealer, i was told this is a common problem with the cobalt and they had many of them coming in for service with the same problem and the whole system would have to be replaced. the cost i was quoted was $1,000.00. gmc customer service was contacted by the dealership service manager and the dealership agreed to pay a percentage of the repair cost which would still leave me paying $475.00. i've only had the car for 2 years and purchased it used with 14,000.00 miles. i was also told that this issue is occurring when and if the car has been jump started because this is a main cause of which triggers the major safety and costly issue. the first question that i was asked of me is: "has the car been jump started with cables at any given time?" this issue has caused some hardship in my family as well as transportation issues for a single mom as myself. i am currently upside down on the vehicle by 7 thousand dollars so trading it in is not an option for me. i am currently paying for a chevy silverado as well. *tr
My daughter's chevrolet cobalt 2007 car's power steering turns-off while driving and makes it a hazard during driving, especially for weaker individuals. the stiffness in steering makes it seem that it is locked. research online shows that even earlier models have this problem. chevrolet engineered making power steering powered electronically vice hydraulics and fluids as with most vehicles. and now, we find that there is no recall from chevrolet and to repair it will cost about $2k. about 1/8 the cost of the vehicle. if were doing the same to a company like toyota, then we should also look at the chevrolet cobalt. *tr
Powersteering went out my 2007 chevrolet cobalt. *tr
The gear shift is loose and will not always disengage the key lock. the lights on the gear panel flash off and on. i have already had the dealership replace this once before and it is in the process of going out again. the last time it gradually got worse until i was unable to get the key out of the ignition at all. i sometimes have to move the gear around until it makes a connection and then it will release the key. the first time this happened was in 2008. *tr
2007 chevy cobalt while driving the electric system goes haywire. the doors begin locking and unlocking on their own, lights on the dashboard display sporadically, and the dashboard indicator reads a message regarding the power steering. the power steering is then hard to control and it seems the vehicle has trouble accelerating. problems have been occurring since december 2009 and can occur several times a day to several times a week. the only way to fix the problem short term seems to be to turn the vehicle on and off multiple times. doing so is not always convenient, such as during highway driving. i feel this is very unsafe and as a women who is 8 months pregnant, with a daily long highway commute-something must be done right away! *tr
I purchased a 2007 cobalt in july of 2007 my car had 43 miles the date of purchase i've had problems with it leaking water in the floor board on the passenger side twice it finally got fixed under warranty, now i'm having problems a year and a half later with my powersteering going in and out when i'm driving that's so dangerous my car now has 40,000 miles on and customer serviced tells me my bumper to bumper is for 36, 000 i can't afford to get this fixed. i've owned my cars for twelve years and have never had any problems with any of my vehicles please help me understand having such major problems like this with a brand new car that i've had for three years. here's my case number with chevrolet customer service 71-777593891. *tr
I drive a 2007 chevrolet cobalt ls. the electric power steering began to click off and on then this past month has gone completely off. it is extremely difficult to steer my car which can lead to an accident and/or harm to myself. i need to get to and from work and can not afford to not drive my car. i called a chevy dealership and the amount of money that has to go into this is quite a bit. i'm am very upset due to the simple fact that my car is a 2007 and this is something i should not have to worry about right now. and on top of that ever since my power steering is out my engine light is on. *tr
I am very upset at the fact that i just read all the complaints on the electrical power steering in the chevrolet cobalt. the same problem i have. i work and pay monthly payments on a 2007 chevrolet cobalt ls that is having these problems. gm should do something, or is it going to be when someone dies as a result of this. steering is a very important component to a vehicle. i refuse to pay the large amount of money that it's going to cost to get it fixed and the dealer can't promise it won't happen again. people invest money into a newer car not to have to pay for problems this early on!. my car evens stalls once in awhile when i first start it and without even mashing the gas you'll hear the ignition run hard for a few seconds like it's starting itself. *tr
I have a 2007 chevy cobalt with power steering problems, it has stopped on me several of times on streets and freeways and have been very lucky so far of avoiding and dodging major accidents but i have tried to fix it but i am still having problems with it more then a couple times a month it is unsafe and unreliable. *tr
