Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

I contacted the dealer where i got the car from at hawk chevrolet about my car problems a few times, and they did try to fix it, which they said it was a electrical problem and they fixed that but then...after that multiple occasion started to happen, my car would turn off just because.the key would get stuck in the ignition and i couldn't get it out. or the car would turn off when i,m stopped at the light sometimes........it,s very stressful enough in my life and now have to deal with this is very stressful...i would just like to get a brand new car from gm....and called it a day....because i don't want my chevrolet cobalt no more even if they fix it i want a refund to put down on a new car now....and dealers are not honoring, the safety recall notice by not giving out any loaner cars for people like gm said they would..and it,s very sad....because if people feel unsafe in recall car we should be able to get a loaner car...they are full of it. *tr

Had power steering replaced 2011 recall. in dec 2013 power steering locked up again going down the road. took to the gm dealership next day. they stated that i had to replace power steering column. i asked them if this was ordinary for these cars he said no that he would contact gm. later that day he called to say gm would not fix the problem i would have to pay. i drove the car slowly and pray it didn't do it again. today power steering went out again but this time all the gauges on car went crazy. fuel gauge dropped to empty but i have full tank security light came on and when i tried to make it down driveway it was making funny noises. *tr

The floor shifter on my 2007 cobalt will not lock out to prevent car from moving will ignition switch is off. the pin inside shifter works it's way out of shifter and prevents lock out mechanism from engaging. in order to start car ,the ignition switch has to manually engaged by sticking finger underneath steering column and pushing the button to release ignition to start car. this is another defect that gm needs to address in recall notice with ignition switch problem. i have two small keys on ignition key ring...very light. this problem is more widespread than reported and the manufacturer needs to correct this flaw. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that there was a crack located at the seal of the fuel tank. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,791. updated 9/11/14*cn updated 1/20/2015 *js

My car has a lot of electrical shortages or just don't work. the unlock button on the driver side will not unlock the rest of the doors and the lock button you have to hit multiple times for it to work. i have no sound out of the speaker in the driver side door and i have replaced it twice and it just continues to blow. i have no sound while my turn single is on. my passenger side air bag is disabled and i have a warning that says service air bag and the icon for the airbag on my panel. i have had it looked at and nobody can seem to determine what is wrong with it. the sound on my radio fades in and out and the button to turn the heat on for rear defrost, air conditioner and the one to circulate the car only worked when they want to. and every since i had the ignition and those recalls fixed the buttons on the right side of my steering wheel (info, reset buttons) only work occasionally. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the key would release from the ignition when the vehicle was not in park. the failure occurred on multiple occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

Once the car was stopped and shut off the driver side, and on one occasion the passenger side, door(s) would unlock, but not be able to be opened. the door would then have to be locked, and then unlocked several more times, sometimes taking ten to fifteen minutes, to be opened. *tr

Recently my 2007 cobalt that i have only had for about a year started twitching out on the dashboard. i started the car to find the gauges fluttering, the security system light came on, it flashed power steering and low fuel ( car has full tank) as well as check engine. i pulled it into to drive where it clunked hard and there was a clicking sound coming from the shifter as well as the power steering was out. i disconnected the battery cables and it reset the computer with no problems thus far. the car has been ok for the last day and a half until today when very quickly the power steering light flashed and went off.the driver side speaker stopped working but flashes on randomly as well as the radio buttons don't work from time to time. i noticed a lot of recalls and similar problems with other peoples vehicles. i would like to know what is causing this electrical issues and have them fixed, i feel my safety is at risk, especially if the power steering shuts off again, this time while i am driving.

While braking, the vehicle's security system warning light lit up, tachometer dropped to zero, and power steering warning briefly flashed. restarting the car turned off the warning light and car drove fine. two weeks later the incident happened again while driving on the highway; again restarting the car solved the issue. the power steering recall was performed on the vehicle a week after the second incident. a month later, the incident occurred again, while braking. several minutes later the gauges started going up and down and the information display shut off. restarting the car did not clear the warning, and car jerked with changes in tachometer. restarting the car a few hours later cleared the warning. car was brought to a mechanic the next morning, and the incident could not be duplicated nor did the computer read an error occurring. the error recurred moments after leaving, and was brought back to mechanic who stated the front lights were also turning on and off. restarting the car several times cleared the warning, but information display no longer turns on properly. the most recent failure mileage was 75,500 miles. *js

Vehicle was recalled around 2010 for steering and fixed. since then numerous electrical failures, power brakes, and steering failures have happened. vehicle has been in dealer and numerous other shops over the years for same problems. chevy dealer (kerry chevrolet in alexandria kentucky), where car was bought kept saying they did not know what was wrong. even after hundreds of dollars spent to fix, problems eventually came back ( electrical failure, gauges fluttering, radio flashing, steering lock, power brake failure). this past weekend, gauges started fluttering, steering locked up while driving and car went into a spin running off the road. chevrolet dealer has always passed all these things off as not their problem. i would like any info on what can be done about this. we are now afraid to have vehicle fixed again and drive it fearing steering may lock while driving at a faster speed. at least this power failure happened at a low speed and no one in the other lane during spin. next time might not be so lucky. please give us any info on what can be done. thank you. *tr

Speakers doesn't work and turn blinker doesn't chill ..... it can cause a incident....that's why i only driver that car..... and the gas gauge it stop working below one 1/4 or sometimes at all...the tcm it stop working and will not shift out from first... *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevy cobalt. the contact was driving 30 mph when the vehicle stalled and independently engaged into neutral before stalling. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact stated that the failure was caused by a malfunction of the ignition switch. the failure mileage was 71,000.

The speedometer is not working...tranny is not shifting to any gear....and check engine is on. *tr

Check engine light with the code 0410. on friday i took my car to a shop because my car started to smell like electrical wires were burning and that is when i noticed the my engine light was on. when the shop checked it had a code for 0410. i looked this code up and i had said there was a recall on this code but i noticed that my car was not on this list.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated while driving 25 mph, he heard a clicking noise after he turned the steering wheel in either direction. the contact stated that he took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 58,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 35 mph, the instrument cluster began to malfunction and various warning lights illuminated. in addition, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the contact pulled over and switched off the vehicle, but it required multiple attempts to restart. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the anti-theft alarm system caused the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

My engine light came on and had it checked and several circuit failures are coming up. car doesn't shut off when i pull key out. *tr

I would be driving down the highway and the car's dials would not work then start bouncing around. then the power steering message would read out, i would loose power steering. if i slowed down it would take more of an effort to get the car up to speed and the car would jump in to gears hard. it wouldn't shift smooth. none of the gauges would work, and if the a/c was on it wouldn't work. when it started back working, the engine lock light would stay on. and the car wouldn't shift in and out of gear with out jerking. *tr

4/22/13 approx 7:30 am, approached red-light, gently applying brakes. car started to lose power! dashboard lights dimmed while i was slowing down. this has been happening for over a yr. as soon as light turned green, car felt like it was losing power and was going to stall out! (like if you were to run out of gas. stepped on the gas, as soon as i saw the light turn green, to try to prevent the stall out, and about 1/4 into intersection, another car was running a caution light, which turned to red... my car regained power with a thrust of the engine, which took me into the path of the other vehicle who hit me at about 35 mph, which caused us to spin completely around in the middle of intersection. airbags did not deploy. the police report stated i failed to yield the right of way. in part that is true, as i felt i had to apply the gas to the car to keep it from "stalling! heavy damage to driver's side, front end, hood, bumper and support beam by engine. there are many recalls on this car. 5/9/2012, fuel odor or spotting on ground; 9/16/10-loss of power steering assist; 3/1/2010-recall 10v073000 power steering motor replacement; 1022/2009-fuel pump module replacement. in the pass three yrs i advised east syracuse chevy dealer that my dashboard lights, lighted areas radio, etc; go in and out like the car has an electrical problem, door left-open, lights, low-fuel, single lights chimes all don't work. dealer advised me there is a short in the dash somewhere causing all these problems, radio speakers are all connected i would have to pay to repair which was over $2,000. remotes don't work. i have had many front end problems with this vehicle, i.e. sway bar, steering column bushings; struts;steering components, linkage/cv drive axle boots, control arms; repairs;11/30/11, 2/16/2011. *tr

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt and i have 89000 miles on it. i have been unable to remove the key for the last 3 months. i know there is a recall on 2009 chevy cobalts but there isn't one for 2007 models. i have read many complaints about this problem with 2007 models and the cost is $425 to get it fixed. because i cannot afford that amount, i have to press a little button in the steering column. *jb

Was driving on city street approximately 20 mph when it felt as if i were driving on rocks. the t/c light went on. i stopped the car, turned the ignition off and looked under the hood. found nothing. turned on the ignition on again. returned to origin i had left less than a block away from incident and parked and turned off the car. it had stopped by now. i turned on the car again and proceeded to attempt my drive on same road. the car began to do the same thing, this time it did not stop. the car would not accelerate and the engine made a rattling noise. i had to call a tow truck to take it to my mechanic. the car was diagnosed as the throttle body was the problem. i had a used body throttle installed and on 03/16/13 i took the car to a chevrolet dealer, miami lakes automall to have a new throttle body installed. the dealer refused to give me warranty on it. on wednesday 07/17/13 the t/c light came on and got message, service traction on the display window. i took the car to the same chevrolet dealer where i had the new throttle body installed. when i turned off the car the light turned off. the car was checked and they claimed they didn't know what was wrong and couldn't help me. *tr

The door locks on the car keep unlocking and locking while driving or stopping. it happens approximately 50 times every time i drive. the locks will also lock and unlock while the car is off and locked leaving it vulnerable to theft. i have to keep my car in my garage for fear of theft. i am unable to drive it anywhere. this is dangerous for anyone who has children as they will try and open the doors. i have had to replace the electrical wiring a few times. it is getting costly to no avail. *tr

The traction control light has turned on several times before but usually goes away. while hitting my brakes on the freeway to exit, my traction control light turned on today. i was going about 60 and slowing when it happened. the vehicle jerked violently causing me to slam forward in my chair and almost causing the person behind me to hit me. once i stopped at the light and hit the accelerator again, it again jerked. i parked my car and shut it off. i turned it back on and put it into drive and immediately the car jolts. it continues to do this each time i switch from park to drive and from braking to driving. *tr

I own a 2007 chevy cobalt. in 2013 my car went crazy. power steering stopped working and all the electric components were all over the place. rpm's were going up and down, full tank of gas said it was empty, gear shifter was clicking, and the car was jerking like it wanted to stall. i called chevy and they told me there were 2 recalls, during the same time my garage smelled strong like gas. i had the problem fixed twice. now in december 2016 the car is going haywire again.power steering goes out, all electric components start flipping out and the anti theft system light comes on along with every other light on the dash. my 17 year old daughter now drives the car and it is completely unsafe considering she is unable to steer and all the electric components go out. this must be treated as a recall! i've seen thousands of the same complaints. this is extremely unsafe and can easily cause an accident. gm needs to take responsibility for this! does someone have to die before a recall fixes the problem? i paid cash for my car and bought it in 2007 with 12 miles on it. this is unacceptable and there needs to be a lawsuit against gm!

Edited partial news entry from the deadly accident: south idaho crash kills two, including nampa woman; ipt (idaho press-tribune) newsroom; gooding county--a nampa woman died after a car accident in gooding county friday (12-21-12), according to idaho state police. a burley man also died in the two-vehicle crash, which took place around 6:45 p.m. on interstate 84 about 35 miles outside mountain home. three others from burley were injured. young woman, 22, of nampa, was driving west on the interstate in a chevrolet cobalt. authorities aren't sure why she lost control of the vehicle. she drove into the median and overturned. her vehicle continued into the eastbound lanes of travel, colliding with a nissan maxima driven by 23- year-old young man of burley. young man died at the scene of the crash. young woman was transported by air ambulance to a boise hospital, where she later died. three passengers related to young man, all of burley...were taken by air ambulance to a boise hospital. all drivers and passengers were wearing seatbelts. [source: http://www.idahopress.com/news/s-idaho-crash-kills-two-including-nampa-woman/art- - icle_7e5ce650-4c9a-11e2-8d7f-001a4bcf887a.html] because the roads were clear and dry, the idaho state police speculated that the young woman was perhaps somehow "inattentive" in her driving. but the fact she was not on her cell phone or otherwise engaged with any other known distraction and the fact that her wrist was snapped back resulting in a serious compound fracture suggests that the vehicle violently and suddenly jerked out of her control. we know the chevy cobalt vehicles were under investigation for "steering problems" by the nhtsa and the investigation was closed in july 2010. with these fatalities perhaps it is time to review your previous findings. updated 09-18-13 *bf updated 9/24/13*cn updated 09/25/2013 *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the key became lodged in the ignition switch and she was unable to shift gears since the shifter failed to move. the contact mentioned that the failure prevented her from turning off the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 90,000.

First off 10,000 miles after my warranty ended the clutch went on this car. since then i have had to replace the clutch 3 more times, replace the transmission and then rebuild the transmission. whoever at chevy decided to use atf in a manual transmission care due to their own design flaw of a smaller whole thereby creating synchos which were not properly lubricated should be shot. so here we are again for annual transmission maintenance..ie: the clutch went out again. this time we changed it and since all the frame bolts were stripped out from the "licensed mechanic" who did it the last 3 times, we had to take it out the top. next came the new starter that had to be put in and now it is all back together, all fuses checked out ok, the battery is ok, the starter checks out of, but....the car will not start. dash lights indicate that there is a power steering issue and i am out of gas, both of which are incorrect so something is wrong and i am out of ideas as to what on this stupid car that i never should have purchased and will never purchase again because it is junk!! *tr

2007 chevrolet cobalt. consumer writes in regards to ignition switch key and computer system. *smd the consumer is seeking reimbursement for two previous repairs, prior to the recall.

On november 10, 2010, i was on my way to work. it was about 10:00am if i remember correctly. i could not even make it out of my subdivision before my cobalt began to give out on me. i made a right turn at a stop sign, and my car suddenly started to "roll" i would say, because i was not able to steer or press the brakes. basically the car had cut off without me knowing. i definitely didn't expect it to happen since it was on a full tank of gas. but anyways as it was rolling it was pulling towards the right since that's how my steering wheel was already turned from me making a right at a stop sign. i could not get the car to stop and i was rolling down the hill drifting off into peoples yards. the car rolled into a brick mailbox. it hit pretty hard. the brick mailbox came completely out of the ground and luckily fell in the opposite direction. i slung forward one the car hit the mailbox. i blacked out for a few seconds, and then immediately went into a panic attack which caused me to go into an asthma attack. i have asthma pretty bad. the air bad did not deploy. the front end of the car was all smashed in and all the fuels had leaked out. because i slung forward i had whiplash, and also a knot on my head and a swollen busted lip. i was wearing my seat belt. i was out of work for a while due to the pack neck and head injuries. the police was called and a police report was filed. and of course the car was totaled out, which also left me with no transportation. *tr

The safety chimes for the turn signal, seat belts not working, keys left in, lights on work through the left front drivers door radio speaker. this speaker seems to go in many cars. the rest of the speakers work fine but are not connected the safety system. there are many documented examples of this on line. this is a safety issue. what if a child is left in a car while the keys were left in the ignition. the car is started and the child sends the car into the street resulting in many fatalities. what about the driver that forgets to fasten seatbelts and don't get the warning chime. this is not a easy fix for the do it yourself as the door needs to came apart to access. this needs to be a safety recall and gm needs to correct before a tragedy happens. *tr

Battery died in car, had to jump the car. car started fine, steering seemed to be a little tight. after a few minutes of driving the tightness in the steering went away. however upon arriving at home the key would not come out of the ignition, and the shifter would shift into any gear easily without having to press in the shifter button. also in attempts to remove the key the steering wheel is now locked all the way to the right with the wheels locked in the right position. was able to remove key from ignition by locating the emergency key release switch under the steering column but car will not start now as key wont turn all the way, and shifter still shifts into any gear without having to press the shifter button. car was parked front first against building so i have no idea how i will get it towed out of there to a shop to fix it! i suspect the shifter cable assembly at the end of the shifter which is made out of plastic is broken. will verify when its taken apart. i have seen at least 50 other cases on the internet where this piece breaks and causes the car not to register it being in park and will not release key from ignition. gm recalled certain years for shifter problems but not the 2007 unfortunately! *tr

Key wont come out of the ignition, stay in the acc position. ive seen a lot of these complaints online. *tr

The left front speaker quit working. i then noticed that the turn signal chime did not work. when i was trying to trouble shoot the problem i also noticed that all chimes (door open, key in the ignition, etc) was not working. based on my research, it appears that the cobalt has a long history of this issue and it also appears that gm doesn't want to address it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that there were several attempts before the ignition key would turn into the off position. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who replaced the ignition tumbler. the failure persisted after the repair was performed. the malfunction caused the battery to weaken and required a charge. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000. the vin was unavailable.

Started down the road and lost control of the car the power steering light came on and there was a lot of play in the wheel. i then attempted to get it back home where it was very hard to turn and the dash computer was all haywire not showing correct data. this supposedly had been fixed under a recall just 5 months prior to me purchasing. *js

Noticed that the car turn signals were working, but there was no ticking sound inside the car. noticed that the front left speaker went off and on. when it worked, the turn signal sound would return after going over a bump, but then stop working again. then the right front speaker stopped working. learned that all audio warning devices in the car are connected to the front speakers. if a child in the back seat removes his or her seat belt, there is no auditory signal to the driver of this danger, same if the car door is opened, etc. contacted gm last week and they said they would help with repair costs, which i had done at their dealership, but now they are saying i was given the incorrect information from their consumer office and they will not pay the almost $200 bill to replace the speakers. this is a safety issue as all auditory warnings come through the front speakers of this car. also i was never notified of a recall for a leaking gas pump or even the existence of this problem in this make and model. *tr

I stopped the car, put it park, i turned the key off but it would only turn to aux. i could not get the key out. i used my spare key to lock my car after turning off all lights, radio, anything that might drain the battery. no safe with key in the ignition yet the car is locked. i did this for a month and looked in the car manual that came with the car and i found there is a emergency release in the steering column. after removing the small square emergency door under the steering column, i had to figure out through the wire harness where the small button i needed to push it in and hold it with one hand and use the other hand to turn the key to the off position and release it from the cylinder and have been doing that since. when the recall came in from gm with the ignition problem stopping in aux which will not deploy the airbags and seatbelts, i took my car to get it replaced as the recall directed. when it was replaced at the dealer, i still could not get the key out as prior repair. i have contacted gm and they said they contacted the dealer and then dealer called me and said i needed to pay $255.00 to fix it. i called gm back and they refused to correct their liability. if i get in an accident, the safety airbags and seatbelts will no work causing more damage to my passengers and myself. i should not have to pay for their liability. *tr
