My dealer drove the vehicle and i was told that the steering column needed to be replaced to solve the problem. there are metal bearings encased in plastic in this column. over time the metal will rub against the plastic and cause play in the bearing. the play will cause chatter when going over bumps and other safety issues. by doing research on this matter i found that there were lawsuits placed against the maker or the steering column due to the fact that general motors had to replace so many of these columns under warranty because of this defect. i contacted gm about this matter and was given a case number and was told that they had no way of telling me if the problem had been fixed or the steering column had been modified to fix the problem. i was told the same by my dealer. general motors told me over the phone that one option i had to solve the problem was to file this complaint with you. there is a bulletin that was issued on this problem and i was told today by my dealer that the bulletin had been cancelled by general motors. why it was cancelled is a mystery. my dealer advised against me changing the column since it is a good possibility that the problem will arise again with the new column. *tr

Driving on highway and heard three dings and my car flashes power steering, it was difficult to steering to the next lane to try and get off the freeway then it just suddenly started working fine. but now i'm worried that it will happen again. i've received two letter about the recall but no dealer in my area has the parts, was told i'd be called when they arrive. *tr

While driving a warning and chime sounded for the power steering. when i slowed down to stop i noticed that the power steering assist had failed and the steering became hard during turning. i had taken the car to the dealership to get diagnosed and they stated that the power steering pump had failed. i know that the power steering pump had been replaced due to a recall from gm 10023 for the pump. recently there is now a recall number 14115 that is for certain vehicles to replace the same pump. i called general motors customer service and complained about the part failing and requested that if my model might be on the list for the new recall. they stated that it is not for my model year and that it is only for the 2010 chevy cobalt. gm gave me a case number and told me that they could not help me. i paid to have the motor replaced with the same motor that is prone to fail. just last week my sister who has a 2006 chevy cobalt received a recall notice from gm, signed by [xxx], to have the power steering motor replaced under 14115. i went back to the dealership to ask them to investigate why she has received a recall and i had not. my answer was that i would need to make a complaint here. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
On the first week of june 2014, my 2006 chevy cobalt went in for the safety recall 13454 (replacement of ignition switch). (this was the second recall this car has had.) on june 19th, 2014 with the new ignition switch installed by the local chevy dealership, while driving the car in town, at speeds of 20 and 30 mph the car lost power to steering, brakes which made difficult even to stop and maneuver safely off the road. the car lost most of the engine performance but stayed running. the car was then turned off and restarted, with dash light warnings of engine light, tc light and a car security emblem light on. the car ran with very limited power and strange clicking noise which was coming from the shifter. i have cell phone video of the shifter nob clicking along with cell picture of the dash warning lights that are on. car had to be "man handled" to get it to a safe destination. the battery was disconnected a then reconnected, with the thought of resetting computer. when battery was reconnected the car was 100% back to normal. for how long, is anyone guess, this strange occurrence has happened more than once. the car is scheduled to go to the chevy dealership for further diagnostics. they informed that it will be a week or so because their all booked up. what a pain in the (you fill the blank). if i had enough $$ to replace the car, i would have this car crushed so that i would no longer be responsible for any accidents it may cause. *tr
Light goes on and power steering comes on the screen transmition does not shift right no power steering the car can't be driven safely 43000 miles and it was already fixed once. *js
Leaving work @ 3:00 pm on saturday 06/14/2014 and all of a sudden lights on dash came on and "power steering" came up on the (mileage read out) and showed the motor and a lock icons (no steering at all). called the chevy dealer in my area and they called a tow truck to tow to them. on monday 06/16/2014 morning was in the dealership early, technician that helped me on saturday was there and told me that it must have "reset itself" so they did testing and they determined that is was a "steering control module" had failed. the vehicle was down for 5 days for the module and the associated recalls for the ignition, picked it up on friday 06/20/2014. now the same issue is showing up again on 07/12/14(took pictures of the icons) and it has not been 15 working days since i picked it up . this is a very dangerous situation because you can be driving it and the next minute you might have no steering at all. when it locks up and it takes (overnight or some time ) to reset. there is definitely a problem and it is scary because you never know. this is unacceptable(can't afford rental vehicles) every 3 weeks. this vehicle is the only way back and forth to work which is 30 miles one way from home. *tr
I contacted graff chevrolet in grand prairie tx about recall notice 14v047/14v171 (gm 13454, 14063, 14113, 14133) in may and was told to come back in june that they would have part available for the recall repair. i went on june 12 and was then told that we would be on waiting list for at least a month for parts to come in. i live with my older mom, and care for my grandmother who has alzheimers, both of which need constant medical treatment and medicines. i use my car to transport both to their doctors visits and cannot have issues with my car regarding the recall notice. i have trouble with the key not turning the ignition at times, and sometimes the steering wheel will tend to want to lock while driving. these are very serious safety concerns especially when i have my mother and grandmother aboard while driving. i do not know why the dealership told us to call on the following month and now they are telling us we have to be on a waiting list and it may be a month or longer. i need this issue resolved. the ignition issue is a very serious matter to me since this car is my only means of transportation. please help in having this issue resolved as soon as possible. due to my need to transport my mother and grandmother i cannot be worrying about a potential safety hazard. i am afraid to drive this car since it has the potential to create a serious accident, or leave us stranded in the texas heat if it decides to not release or engage the ignition. *tr
We took the cobolt to ourisman chevrolet, alexandria, va for repairs to the ignition switch which is subject of a recall. dealer kept saying the necessary parts were not available and it would take months. we took the car to them since we had 2 events when the ignition turned off and the steering wheel locked. to our surprise the dealer had the part and supposedly fixed it the same afternoon. about a week later, when we were pulling out of the parking lot, the car started to turn off and on and then the ignition turned off completely and the steering locked, which was the same problem before the supposed repairs and subject to the recall. we are lucky it didn't happen on the highway and want to alert federal authorities to potential faulty replacement parts or improper repairs. either way, the problem can cause accidents, as it has in the past and could result in deaths. we called gm and was given a number. however, a customer advisor suggested the problem is something else and not related, which is hogwash. the same problem as before the so called repairs. *js
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized. the contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to maneuver the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 10v073000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 78,500.
Power steering failure seems to occur at random times, and becoming more frequent. there is a "power steering" display on dashboard and a warning chime. then the speedometer and rpm's go bonkers, the car repeatedly jumps forward abruptly, and the power steering goes out. sometimes i can park, turn the car off and back on, and the issue goes away, and sometimes it does not. this happened last year, but the power steering motor recall (done in july of 2013) seemed to fix it, but only temporarily. it is irritating and scary to have to drive my car like this, and i am concerned for my safety during the upcoming winter months where i will certainly be driving on ice and snow. i hope there will be another recall to permanently solve this issue. thank you. *tr
Just got the car back from the ignition switch recall and was driving on a flat road. the car was driving normally at first, then without warning the car's speedometer and rpm gauges were moving up and down rapidly. the rpms went very close to zero and you couldn't tell how fast you were going. in addition, the info gauge displayed "power steering" and the car was very difficult to turn. also, when trying to accelerate out of a stop, the car jerked violently as if it had trouble shifting. after turning the car off then on again, it drove normally again. afraid that it could happen again without warning. *tr
Car froze up my wife came home from work steering froze up engine throttle had problems then it died after waiting in the middle of the road it restarted with no steering asst. just getting it home we aren't driving it till its repaired we have letter's from chevrolet but no repairs have been made they said they would call still waiting my wife only drives 1 miles to work on slow city streets if she would of been on the free way real problems could of happened also power steering light go on works the stops. *tr

I own a 2006 chevy cobalt that yes is involved in the ignition switch recall. just putting the key in the ignition i am sure helps a bit. but i have been checking the ignition position when i stop at lights and stop signs and a few times the key has slipped a little not enough to bounce it into the off position. but enough that if i did not push it back into position and i hit a bump it would have. however it has not been recalled in the steering column recall. i have for months off and on had a whining noise in the steering wheel and when it does this the car is hard to steer. on the way home from work the other day the steering wheel started to whine when i was turning onto the highway and steering got harder. when i hit the highway the warning light came on and car started to ding at me. i pulled over and turned car off for a minute and turned it back on and car was fine. when i got home i looked to see if there were other cobalt owners having this issue. and there are hundreds of 2006 owners and even more for 2005 having the issue. that is when i found they were recalling cars for this issue but only 2010 cobalt's which they had recalled in 2010 for the same issue. but the rest of us are not included in the recall but are having the same problem. there is also another problem with the 2006 cobalt's front end. i brought my car in a couple months ago because it was making a banging noise in the front end. and found that the lower tie rods and the bearing were bad on both sides of the car. i again hit the internet to see if other owners where having this issue and i found again hundreds of 2006 cobalt owners where having this same issue. and many of them stated that they contacted chevy to talk to them about the issue and they were told that it was not a safety issue so therefore chevy was not going to recall the car and fix the problem it was our issue. *tr
At a speed of about 5-10 mph the steering failed. the recall number n100023 was preformed on 7/15/2010 at 63,057 miles. the part seems to have failed again. my wife was in the middle of teaching our daughter how to park and now we are afraid to even let her drive the car with the recall for the ignition switch, there has to be a solution fix for this problem reoccurring. *tt
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated his vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v171000 (electrical system) 14v047000 (air bags, electrical system) however, immediately after the repairs the key failed to come out of the ignition switch. the failure was brought up to the service manager's attention but he declined to repair the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 74,000. the vin was not available.
While turning the power steering got stuck and vehicle did not straighten up resulting into hitting an car. *tr
While driving the dashboard flashes "power steering" repeatedly. the check engine light came on and then the security theft light came on. as i came to a stop the car began to shake and down shifted hard. as i began to excel from a stop, it also shifted really hard. also, while driving, my speedometer became erotic. on multiple incidences when i came to a stop by car's rpm dropped below 500 and acted as if it were about to stall. a few times it did stall and would not restart unless i had it in neutral and took off immediately. another time, as i was waiting in a drive-thru, my shifter began to click. *tr
I had become aware of the recall, just the week prior and was planning on making arrangements to have the car fixed, once the parts (3-4 weeks out from what i was explained) arrived. i was also explained via the dealer and what i read on line that the car should be ok to drive so long as there was nothing on the key. so i requested my daughter to only use the key with absolutely nothing on it, when using my car. at approximately 2pm on a clear sunny day, my daughter was exiting the freeway. as she was slowing down, the car suddenly shut off on her. before she had time to react she hit another vehicle. she was fortunately not injured, mainly because she was already slowing down and had it been a few minutes earlier, things may have been drastically different. i have had this car for 7 years and i drove it quite a bit and let my daughter do so as well. i am angry that gm has allowed my daughter and i to be at risk for such a long period of time and even as i am writing this (2 weeks later) the only answers i have really been given from gm are answers i have had to call and press them on, which for the most part is almost no information at all. i am sure they are being inundated with complaints and having to deal with the media, congress, nhtsa, but i cannot feel any empathy or sympathy for that matter, when they have had years to deal with this and simply swept this under the rug. harsh and swift action must be taken to punish them and set an example to all others. enough with the bail outs. time to start being accountable. *tt
The power steering went out. airbag light and power steering light came on. *tr
Randomly the electric power steering goes out, it went out while turning a corner and bounced off a oncoming car in a turn lane, this happens constantly and i just got the car , they want me to pay just to look at it i don't have 200 to look till i hear a large number of other owners are having the same issue. *tr
I was driving on the highway, and my cobalt suddenly lost power steering. i received flashing warning messages for power steering and another one saying "service air bag." i am worried that if i am in an accident, the air bags will not deploy. these two things happened simultaneously. *tr

Had my car recalled for the ignition recall and had my car sitting at the dealer ship waiting on the part for 6 months. received my car back in august 2014 and find that having several problems. the ignition locks the key does not open the door, electric problems, lights go out and than come on, ac has rattle when turn on high, car jerks. these problem have occurred since i have received my car back after 6 months sitting at the dealership because of the gm recall. i had a rent a car and paid over $600 in gas and had to get the window repaired from a chip that got bigger, from a small one when i got it. had to get an oil change because it was low on oil and new wipers. i would never had to have done that with my car. it cost me more money to have a rent a car and i never got reimbursed. just got a thank you. i feel i should get something out of this weather i am injured or not. *tr

The electric steering assist failed and i was barely able to get the vehicle off the road safely. i have owned the car 16 months and have had two failures of the electric assist steering system. i have inquired at a local dealership about any update bulletins or repairs that would fix the problem and was told none existed yet at that time but there may be a recall. this has not happened. *tr

I was attempting to turn into a drive and the steering became hard to turn. afterwards power steering appeared to work normal. *tr
My wife and her mother were driving on a street in the city that we live in. this street does have a mild to moderate amount of traffic depending on the time of day. it is a two lane road that for the most part goes through the residential area of the city that we live in as well as the neighboring city. the speed limit predominately is 35 mph. at the time of the incident, my wife was traveling to the south in which the roadway proceeds down a short, mild downgrade in to a natural wash or stream bed and then back up an upgrade to the south side of town and the neighboring city. my wife was traveling downhill when suddenly she lost power to the vehicle and the steering locked up. the engine was still running but all the electrical components of the vehicle such as the gauges and the car stereo ceased to work.due to the steering locking up and my wife being unable at the time to control the vehicle, she drifted in the opposite lane, bounced off a curb on that side of the road and then drifted back into the appropriate lane before coming to a stop. fortunately for the safety and well-being of my wife and her mother, no other vehicle was in or approaching the opposite lane. when the vehicle came to a stop, the engine stalled when the key ignition was in the run position. my wife proceeded to switch the key in the off position and then proceeded to restart the vehicle. the vehicle then started up like normal. my wife proceeded to drive the vehicle to her original destination which was only a couple of miles away. she then notified me by cellphone in which we started the process of trying to get this issue resolved. *tr

My electrical issue: i have had my car diagnosed so many times because i could not find the reason why my car rpm keeps going up and down. than it came down to an electrical issue. power steering: while i am driving my power steering completely goes out therefore it is causing me not to be able to control the car and have had multiple times where i almost wrecked my car due to this issue. i could be driving and or turning and all of a sudden it just completely goes out causing me not control the car especially when the roads are wet. i saw there was a recall back in 2010 but so many people are having the same issue now that it's 2014...it is not worth having death on their hands i just don't understand why nothing is up to date. *tr

On 12/18/13 i began to notice a "humming" noise coming from the car. the humming noise got increasingly worse over the next few days. at the same time i noticed the "service airbag" sign came on and the radio began flash and attempted to eject a cd without me manually pushing the button or cd being inside it. the "humming" noise progressively got worse and the steering wheel began to stiffen up. after 2 weeks of the problem becoming increasingly worse, i decided to have my mechanic do a complete diagnostic test. he believed that the diagnosis is the electrical power steering and stated that after much research the cost would be $900+ because the repairs would have to be by a certified gm and parts would have to be specially ordered due to the nature of the way the car was manufactured. he also stated that apparently this problem is an ongoing issue with this particular make/model car and regretfully was unable to repair it. i am a single mom and value me and my child's safety but at this time the no repairs have been made due to the obscene amount of money in question to repair it and ongoing financial hardships. i am filing this complaint because i feel this problem can lead to a more serious issue and may be a part of a bigger issue. *tr
After two hub failures, stabilizer link failures, ignition coil failure, rear defroster failure, power locks failure, and now the steering rack is making a grinding noise and causing premature wear to the front right tire. i believe there is a tsb on the steering rack. this should be a recall i won't ever by a gm again. *tr

I was traveling on a 2 lane road that i travel most every day, the road is not busy most times.as i was entering a sharp curve suddenly the car engine quit and next thing i knew i was raking the guardrail on the right side of the road,.damaged the car more than it was worth, this was only the 2nd time the car had done this but i had only owned it about 11/2 yrs.the guardrail saved us from going over a 300 ft.mountain into the river.thankful for that guardrail, but left without anything to drive. *tr
I purchased a 2006 cobalt from a private owner this week. i test drove it 3 times with no problems. after bringing it home, i attempted to turn off the car and remove the key. it would not turn off all the way and the key would not come out. i was very upset and scared. the car would restart so i was able to put it in the driveway and park it next to the garage. since i could not remove the key i put a car club on it and locked the door. then i parked another car behind it. i did not think about it but since the key was in the accessory position the battery went dead. the next day i was not able to remove the key and i was not able to start it. i called a local chevrolet dealer. he checked the vin for recalls and said there was not one on the 2006 cobalt related to the starting solenoid binding up. he did tell me it is common and most cars that have the problem have a recall issued. this problem has caused me major distress and could be very unsafe if the car had experienced this problem somewhere away from home. i found out how to fix it by reading articles on the internet. many people have reported this problem and chevrolet has not listened to the consumers by issuing a recall and repairing the problem. there is a button in the steering column that needs to be pressed by a rod to tell the car that the car is in park and it is ok to turn it off and remove the key. the cars with problems have a rod that does not depress the button. people have to remove a cover on the steering column and reattach the rod when they can not remove their key. however, over time the rod slips to far that this is no longer a solution and the parts need to be replaced. why should the consumer have to suffer this stress and worry about getting their car stolen because their key is stuck in it? chevrolet needs to immediately take care of this ongoing, long standing issue. *tr
