We have classified the 64 complaints from 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt about AIR BAGS into the following categories.
I'm making a complaint about the 2005-2009 chevy cobalt power steering. i drive a 2005 chevy cobalt ls and last april 2009, i noticed my power steering going out. i was in the middle of no where in new york state with a 2 year old in the car with me. since then it has gone out completely with about a 2 min window that i do have it after i start the car. i had contacted gm through email, had a diagnosis ran on it and reported it back to them, when only to be told that they could not help me with it. i don't have the money to repair it knowing that i need a new steering column to fix it. so i do not have any power steering and on top of that the sensor for the air bags comes on too. these two problems have been very scary for me and my 2 year old daughter. *tr
Air bag light is on continuously and now the power steering light goes on and you loose steering as you are driving. the air bag light was fixed 1 time by dealer and now it is on again and they say they will not fix it because it has been tampered with but they are the only one's to work on it i have my repair invoice. the power steering light just started coming on and now you loose steering as soon as it goes on. it almost caused an accident the first time it happened because i was going around a curve and a car was coming the other way and i lost my steering. luckily i didn't hit the other car but i think this is a major safety hazard. *tr

I was going to work early in the morning. a train was in the distance which scared a huge buck deer. the buck deer with huge antlers ran straight into my car head on. i was not able to steer away from the deer and my car seemed to shut down. the huge buck deer hit me head on. the lights were totally smashed. the hood of the car was completely damaged. the windshield was totally smashed. the roof was damaged and the car was lopsided. the buck deer antlers went thru the windshield just inches away from me.the air bags did not work even though it was a head on collision with great force. my car seemed to shut off and i could not steer away from the deer. i was cut with glass on my face, arms and hands. my neck and back was hurt. i had my seat belt on but my stomach hurt from the dramatic impact. i complained that the air bags did not work and that my car acted strangely in which it seemed the ignition switch shut everything down and i could not control the car but i was totally ignored. *tr
On the date listed, my wife was driving at app. 40mph. at which point she ran into the rear of another vehicle that was stopped. upon impact the seat belt failed to keep her in the driver seat. there was also no airbag deployment. upon impact she flew upwards and forward, hitting her face on the visor. she went to the hospital where they did scans and found no bleeding on the brain, however she was injured in the face to which she still has a bump on the bridge of her nose and still gets headaches. also, shortly after the accident she had two black eyes and a concussion. the vehicle was repaired, but there was no indication that anything was done with the airbag system or the seat belt, by the auto body shop. we contacted gm a day or two after the accident. they sent an engineer out to gather readings from the car a few weeks later. it wasn't until this week that we heard something back from gm. they said there was nothing for them to do and they left it at that. we are still driving the same car and are very weary of what could happen if we are involved in another accident. i think there needs to be a recall done and the manufacture held liable for the equipment failure. *tr
I am not quite sure of the date as it was a years ago. my grand daughter was driving this car when someone turned left in front of her. it was deemed the other persons fault. she hit this car going somewhere between 25 to 35 mph. the air bag never deployed. i am now only bringing this up as i am reading about the 2005 cobalt being recalled and that it some cases the air bag did not deploy. i still own this car and today received my first notice from gm that this car is being recalled for an ignition problem. the engine never stopped in this accident that i am aware of. i just wanted to pass this information along to you agency. thank you this may not be the date but i had to put something in the required field. the car was purchased from progressive chevrolet. that is also where it was repaired they may have info. on actual date. *tr
After driving for 30 minutes at a speed of 55-60 mph on the interstate, i was on the off ramp merging from one interstate to another, when the cars ahead of me starting slowing down. i applied a sudden pressure to the brakes to slow down also; however, the brake pedal went soft and then it seemed like the brakes locked, but did not slow down. the car made a sudden jolt to the right bringing me into the on coming traffic in the next lane. this resulted in a collision with another car. resulting in a total loss to the cobalt. the air bags did not deploy eventhough the front end of the car was destroyed. *nm

I got in an accident on october 17, 2006 and my air bags did not go off. i had a frontal impact and nothing came out. result was that i hit my head at the connecting part of the windshield and roof of my car. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 50 mph on a clear dry highway in heavy traffic, all traffic stopped abruptly, causing the front end to impact the right rear of the vehicle in front. then the vehicle spun off the road to the left impacting head on with the guardrail. the frontal air bags failed to deploy on either impact. a police report was taken. the rental car company was notified and the contact was taken to the hospital.
Was hit from a car going 70 miles per hr. the seat belts that morning were not working for the driver side, enabling my mother to have safety protection. we have evidence and pictures of this, she was thrown out of the car. the passenger side airbag did not deploy, because we were hit at such a fast speed, it caused our car to spin around in circles and run into a building. the passenger side seat belt also did not lock up, causing me to be thrown into the driver seat without the airbags presence to keep me in place. i am disgusted to know there was acknowledgment of this in 2004 yet they just now choose to call a recall on these situations. *tr
Dt*: the contact stated the ignition switch would not turn, the airbag light illuminated and the turn signal failed. the dealership repaired the problems but they reoccurred. the manufacturer was alerted.
On feb. 10,2006 my little brother was on his way home in my 2005 cobalt it was raining he went around a curve an lost control of the vehicle. he hit a total of 3 trees the car was total. the air bags didn't not deploy an the seat belt didn't catch, bc of this my little brother lost his life. he was 5'11 an weighed about 350 lbs an came up out of his seat and hit the top of the car were the metal meets the windshield. nothing has been done. my family called chevy to report it they said they would call us back in 24 to 48 hrs that was almost 3 wks ago an haven't heard anything. *nm
1) months prior to the accident at high way speed (65 to 75 mph) after several hour (from 1 to 4) with the cruise control engaged, when disengaging the cruise control, the car would vibrate violently. gm claims they can not duplicate the problem. 2) brakes failed - applied brakes in traffic, pedal was soft and then went hard like the power brakes was not working, but the car did not slow down, causing the impact in the rear of a pick-up truck. 3) according to the air bag report the car was traveling over 30 mph, but the air bags did not deploy on the frontal crash. *jb
The 2005 chevy cobalt we purchased for my daughter has a violent vibration that is intermittent. the vibration usually happens on long trips, when the car is at highway speeds of over 65 mph for 45 minutes or longer with the cruise control on. then when coming up on slower traffic, you touch the brakes to disengage the cruise control, a violent vibration proceeds. if you apply more brakes the vibration gets worse. this vibration requires the driver to maintain both hands on the wheel to control the car. this vibration will last from a few minutes to 15 miles. usually when the vibration stops the cruise control will not work for a minute of 30 minutes and up to 3 days. we have take the car to the dealerships 5 times. 2 dealerships in or around tampa florida and the dealer we purchased it from in jonesboro georgia. each time they dirve the car a few miles at highway speeds over 60 mph and declare nothing is wrong. as we stated above and to the dealerships, it takes a minimum of 45 minutes or longer at speeds over 65 mph for this vibration to happen, and sometimes it will not happen. we have started the lemon law process in georgia and have asked for a replacement car or purchase back by gm. we are awaiting there actions. since the manufacturer's last attempt to fix the car, in which my daughter drove 2 hours and the vibration started as they were existing the express way to the dealership, she over heard the service manager acknowleged "the problem is in the brakes' they contacted the gm rep in atalanta area, and decided to do nothing to fixe the car. now yesterday, when my daughter was about to slow down on the connector in atlanta, due to slower traffic, the brake pedal went soft and then "hard as a brick" causing the car not to stop and hitting the pickup truck in front of her. the air bags did not deploy and she now has a "mild concusion". she had to miss work yesterday and today. what can be done to force gm to fix this brake problem or replace the car?*jb
I rented this brand new cobalt 4 months after hurricane katrina from mobile alabama, so as to go back to my home town of san francisco, ca. by the time i made it through los angeles, at around 430 am. i lost control of car due to severe stiffness in the steering. which led to the vehicle running off of i-5 heading north bound at a speed of 60 miles per hour. visibility was good, i veered off the freeway into the median portion of i-5, and i tried to slow down but no response which led me to roll over few times, end to end and over and over, luckily i was wearing my seat belt and it held very well, suprisingly, no airbags, none of them deployed, and all the windows blew out, and not the reinforced kind including the front wind shield. the ambulance came, and so did the california highway patrol. there is a report about it which indicates that no airbags were deployed, and i do have pictures of car after incident. i had few bumps and bruises and had few cuts from the glass on my arms and legs, and i had to acquire a few rounds of physical therapy and accupuncture.but luckily i was in good spirits.the car was covered under 3 insurances, which paid for some damage, including my discover card, and my grandma's aarp. and the rental car company. *js
My cobalt has been in repair the center at 2 different dealerships for a total of 17 visits. the air conditioner leaks excessively into the passenger floorboard. my headlight indicator comes on repeatedly, my temperature controls do not always work, my emergency brake light comes when the brake is not on, most recently my gauges have been quitting as i am driving and my left blinker has stopped working. my car has been in a shop for a total of over 60 days since i bought it in sept. 2005. i have contacted gm/chevrolet in an attempt to settle these problems and they will not assist me. my warranty will expire in less than 8000 miles. gm/chevrolet - manufacturer and dealerships- will not assist me. i am very unsatisfied with my purchase, gm delivered a defective car and they will not stand by their reputation. *jb
