Problems with 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

I was driving my car and making a left hand turn onto a major road. in the middle of the turn the vehicle died and could not be restarted. i had the vehicle towed and discovered that the fuel pump had failed and had it replaced. *jb

While driving on a 4 lane highway, i stopped a to make a left hand turn across this busy highway, upon my turn the car lost power and stalled in the middle of the on coming lanes of traffic. restarted the vehicle and continued to stall moving only a few feet at a time and would not restart, being that i am disabled this caused a danger to myself and others on this busy highway (aka) highway of death in this area. in california hwy 99/70 north bound north of sacramento ca. after a time some motorist assisted me and pushed my vehicle out of lanes of traffic to the edge of the highway. i had no warning or indication that the vehicle was about to fail or that any system needed attention. because of my disabilities, i would never drive a vehicle that was not reliable or would caused a situation to arise that would be a danger to myself and the motoring public. a mechanic at a chevrolet dealer that i have known for years advised me the beware of fuel pumps in these vehicles as they have a very high rate of failure. i also asked the mechanic if knew what i could do to avoid this situation and he stated that no official manufacture advisory were avail. in his opinion the fuel pumps of poor quality and suffered from over heating being they a cooled by the gasoline in the tank. and suggested to keep the tank full. i never let the fuel get below 1/4 tank level and usually refill at 1/2. this is a 2003 model with 39,593 miles the vehicle was towed to my home. not repaired. i am not sure if i should have it repaired. i have no faith in the dealership or the manufacture and the only other choice is to just sell it to another person advising them before hand or selling to a wholesale dealer. i am driving my other vehicle. *tr

2003 chevrolet cavalier giving off fumes first time i filled it to the top with gasoline. that eventually set off a check engine light on the dash. i used my obd2 scanner and it was a code for a high evap leak. it was too difficult to find the leak at my home, so i had the dealership do a smoke test and revealed a crack at the seams of the gas tank. dealership said no recall for that make and model. estimate for replacement and labor was $1,000. i found a salvage yard gas tank from a low mileage oldsmobile alero and the local repair shop replaced it. mechanic mentioned it is a common occurrence to find a crack at the seams of a newer gm small car with a plastic gas tank. i reset the check engine light code myself and the problem never reappeared. *kb

My fuel pump went out on my 2003 chevy cavalier. my vehicle has 61,000 miles and as i was driving up a hill it died. when i got it towed to a shop they informed me that it was my fuel pump and that it is a common problem with this vehicle. needless to say i paid the $748.00 to replace the pump and then was informed that the wire that controls the fuel pump had to be replaced as well because it had fused to the frame. *tr

2003 chevy cavalier w/56,000 miles. car stalled and died. had to have it towed to local mechanic. they determined it was a clogged fuel filter. replaced that. total cost of tow and filter - $250. the next week, took a trip, drove 200 miles and car stalled and died again. had to get it towed to another shop. they said the fuel pump was faulty. replaced fuel pump and oxygen sensor. total cost of that tow and replacement - $1600. *tr

Car stalls intermittently, usually when coming to a stop. this is either with the clutch engaged or with the transmission in neutral. the idle dips to about 500rpm, fluctuates, and either goes back up to 900rpm or stalls the car. restarts are hard. the car has approximately 61,000 miles. it has happened frequently for the past six months. some days it's fine, and others it stalls every time you come to a stop light. *tr

My 2003 chevy cavalier has stalled out several times while i was driving down the road at speeds not over 25 mph. this was very scary and it definitely could have caused a big problem at a higher rate of speed, because you lose everything when it dies. i just had to replace the fuel pump , on a car that is less than 4 years old, has less than 32,000 miles on it, and all maintenance has been completed per dealer recommendations. the cars warranty was the 3 year/ 30,000 mile warranty, so the dealership would not have helped with the repair bill. there is something not quite right about this car even though the fuel pump has been replaced, at times it goes by itself without my foot on the gas pedal- i have to apply the brake to slow it down. *jb

I have a 2003 chevy cavalier with 56,200 miles on it and my wife and i were returning home to flint mi. @ 10 pm on i75 in michigan when the car started to slow down and than it picked up to normal speed for a couple of miles and than it stalled and would not restart. the only light that came on was traction control off light. we walked to the nearest exit and called our son to come get us - we were approx. 30 miles from home @ 10:30pm. i could not get the car towed until the next morning due to severe storms in the area. i researched the internet and it was very obvious that it is a common problem to have the fuel pump quit on 2003 cavaliers. i called and had the car towed to my son-in-laws house (36 miles). i had to meet the driver and show him where to take the car. i took the day off work and called to get prices on fuel pump modules. the normal cost is over $400 for the module. after the car was towed my son-in-law used his tester and there was not any codes in the ecm. we than tested the fuel pump and there was not any noise indicating that the pump was not working. i went and bought a pump which listed for $420 and just because i was a gm employee - i was able to get a discount and only paid $240.00. my son-in-law charged me $100 to replace the pump and the car runs fine. by the way the towing bill was $110 but the insurance company would not cover the total bill because i did not take it to the nearest repair facility. it would have cost me in excess of $800 to take it to a repair facility. i tried contacting chevrolet customer service but they deny any problems or issues even though there are 100's & 100's of complaint on the internet. if you need anymore info - please contact me. *jb

I was driving down the highway when my 2003 cavalier began to slow down, i thought this was odd because i was still holding down the accelerator. the car seemed to be able to maintain a speed of about 60mph for about another mile when the car began to slow again then the car could not accelerate over 40mph and it eventually died completely in the middle of the highway with cars doing 70mph zooming past me. i finally made it to the shoulder of the highway and had the car towed, after performing troubleshooting, i found out it is the fuel pump that has gone out and needs to be replaced. my car only has 57,000 miles on it and at the time i still had half of a tank full of fuel, i never let the tank get below half way since i have owned the car. after doing some research i came across hundreds of other people that have the same exact year, make and model as my car that are having the same problem and it seems to happen when the car gets around 55,000 - 68,000 miles on it. this is very unsafe issue and there needs to be a recall. *tr

After only 63,000 i have to replace the fuel pump in the 03 cavalier. i have noticed up to 150 entries on a site where this is the situation. gm has sold a product to only run for 3 years. i went out with out warning, i missed half a day of work and now how knows how many hours to repair since i can only afford the part not the hours at a garage. i will keep the part for inspection if you need it. *ak

There was no lead in to fuel pump failure. stopped after work to purchase a grocery item and then returned to vehicle. at that point the chevy cavalier would not start. aaa came and towed vehicle to repair facility. i was shocked that a vehicle with less then 35,000 mile would have a sudden failure of this sort without any warning or symptom. i feel fortunate that i was not driving at the time.
