Driveshaft failure

I got an engine malfunction warning light on my 2011 bmw x5. i brought it to a mechanic who told me the issue is the high pressure fuel pump. there is a recall for other bmws although mine is not on the list. the mechanic indicated this is an ongoing issue for my bmw and should be covered by a recall.

Upon starting my car at a friend's house, i heard a brief electrical buzzing noise that then stopped. it sounded like the radiator fan, but the fan wasn't moving. i drove my car approximately 15 miles home and parked it. about 2.5 hours later, from inside my home, i heard the sound of what seemed to be a small explosion. i looked outside and my car's engine compartment was engulfed in flames. it had parked, unused with the motor off for more than two hours on a cool day with temperatures in the 40s with no warning indicators lights or messages. i later learned bmw had issued a recall for electrical fires, however, i never receiveda recall notice. press reports note that more than 90 such fires have been reported to your agency, and i can still find no documentation on your website of this problem.

I have received an engine code 4bcc " passive tank fill sensor" for my 2011 bmw x5d. this is in the the emission system def tank. this appears from my research that it is a frequent problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. while driving approximately 35 mph and attempted to accelerate, "engine malfunction reduce power" appeared on the instrument panel and the vehicle lost acceleration. the contact drove into a parking lot and turned off the vehicle. the vehicle failed to restart and white smoke emerged from the tail pipes. the vehicle finally restarted and was driven home. the vehicle was towed to bmw of temple (6006 s general drive, temple, tx 76502), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 113,900.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. approximately ten minutes after the contact parked the vehicle in the garage, the fire alarm activated. after returning to the garage, the contact noticed flames and smoke coming from under the hood of the vehicle. the contact used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames. the fire department was called to the scene and a fire report was filed. the cause of the failure was not determined. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the failure mileage was 140,000.

The vehicle loses power and suddenly increase it while driving the vehicle it also jerks steering feels loose leaking oil from the engine. computer on the dash reads to add a quart this is happening every other day since i got it back from the dealer. the vehicle is back at the dealership and advisors tell me there is nothing wrong with the oil all lies. they dismantled my entire engine the vehicle never drove the same again plus the check engine light is flickering. please help!!!!!!! vehicle shut down on me while i was in the highway driving slowing i pulled out of the highway into and exit and from there i had it tow to bmw after they so called fixed it again

Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. the contact stated that the vehicle was towed to a dealer (bmw 6655 coliseum blvd, alexandria, la 71303 (318) 445-6678) to be serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 19v017000 (air bags). after the recall remedy was performed, the vehicle was towed back to the contacts residence however the check engine warning light was illuminated along with a note from the dealer indicating that the engine was at a 50% capacity and that the vehicle needed to be returned at the dealer. the contact called the same dealer when it was informed that the drive shaft needed to be replaced under an extended warranty but after calling on a later time the dealer then informed the contact that they would be responsible for the cost of repairs. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that they would investigate the issue however then declined to cover any repair costs. the failure mileage was 107,000.

The vehicles oil was change at the bmw mechanic. shortly after driving away, the engine started to malfunction. returned vehicle and they stated that the vanos were damage and needed to be replaced. this was a previous issue for the bmw vanos systems and there decision was to extend the warranty another 10 years. i have not received such letter stating this and the bmw facility wants to charge me.

After receiving an oil change, the check engine light came on code 88624 which caused the engine to loose power. after inspection the fault was for exhaust camshaft stuck which is an error due to the timing/vanos system. no visible damages where found to the camshaft solenoids that are accessible. please advise if there are any other issues with consumers for these problems, thank you!

Oil was changed and shortly after the engine lost power. then displayed an engine light. took to bmw and stated the fault was for exhaust camshaft stuck and this error was due to the timing/vanos system. the camshaft solenoids had no visible damage and where cleaned. they stated further research needed to be done which would be over $1000+.

After having the oil changed and driving for several miles, the vehicle lost power. it had a code which was diagnosed as the exhaust camshaft stuck, this was an error due to the timing/vanos system. there was no visual damage to the camshaft solenoids but were cleaned yet still having issues. are other consumers having this type of issue?

After having that oil change the check engine went on the engine power reduced turning the whole car off during driving over 45 miles. bmw found error code which showed exhaust camshaft stuck, this is an error due to timing/vanes. after cleaning the camshaft solenoid and no visible damage present they stated further research would need to be conducted. cost would be over 1000.00. are other consumers having issues with the vanos system?

Burning smell inside car cabin. immediate loss of power during acceleration. engine stops abruptly coast to the side of the road and restart. today is the second time, the first time happened two weeks ago

I am having an exhaust leak into my cabin. i already replaced the egr cooler and it went away, but now the smell is back.

The vehicle engine was internally knocking which one dealership told me to keep driving it and bring it back at my appointment a week later and another dealership avidsed me not to drive the car as they were having a global issue with these engines and the engine could seize up... if i were on the highway or roadway and the engine seized up it could have caused a serious accident.

I was told i have issues with the nox sensor and scr catalyst. i have also been preovusly told that the entire diesel emissions system was faulty and it would cost me $6000 to repair. because i have 155k miles on the car nothing falls under warranty. bmw is also unsure that the oxygen sensor is really the problem so it will cost me $1000 to replace that and hope it works. the issue now is my car is giving me a message "incorrect diesel fluid" even though there is correct fluid in (since the dealer is the only one who has ever put any in there) and is at the full level. the sensor is now saying i only have 60 miles to drive it before it won't start again. what i am most disturbed about is that there is information that there was a recall on this exact issue but because i can't find a recall number they will not honor it and will not fix my car. http://www.autonews.com/article/20120504/retail05/120509927/bmw-will-recall-diesel-models-to-fix-emissions-glitch i have been with bmw for a number of years and my family has purchased quite a few. as a result of this, i have now had to purchase another car (a nissan) and had to take an uber to the lot to pick it up since my car may not even make it to the lot and back.

'takata recall' when the heat or ac is on air from vent start to burn my eyes. whenever i'm in my vehicle i leave out feeling sleepy. cabin filter has been changed as well as others problem continues. also the leather on the dash board is pulling away from the vent. plastic wood trim cracks over time leaving the vehicle looking cheaply built

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. while driving 65 mph, the engine shut off. the vehicle was able to coast to an off ramp and a parking lot. there were no warning indicators illuminated prior to the engine shutting off. the vehicle was towed to bmw of darien (140 ledge rd, darien, ct 06820, (203) 656-1804) for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 80,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 18v336000 (engine and engine cooling). the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the contact called bmw seattle at (206) 829-5004 (located at 1002 airport way s, seattle, wa 98134) and was informed that the part was not available. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the contact had not experienced a failure. vin tool confirms parts not available.

Dtc p21a8: fault for level sensors in passive scr tank (replace passive tank and evaluator). similar to previous recall fault for the active scr tank.

While driving on highway, the engine overheated, loss of power, stop driving message appeared on dashboard. car towed to dealership, diagnosed issue due to water pump failure.

Auxiliary water pump failed which caused engine overheating. when i called bmw us and my local bmw dealer - bmw of alexandria, va i was denied for repairs, despite there was a recall for my particular car and model. according to my car repair history that recall was never performed.

Belt tentioner had to replace. it's recalled on the diesal bmw x5 2011 but not the gas one.

Driving down street steering wheel locked up ,car shut down, had it towed to bmw, they said engine, powertrain failed, warranty people refuse to pay to have fixed

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 18v336000 (engine and engine cooling). the vehicle experienced the same symptoms as listed in the recall. the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that there was no solution for the recall. the dealer (park avenue bmw, 530 huyler street south, hackensack, nj 07606, (877) 626-6518) confirmed that there was no solution. the contact's request for a loaner vehicle was denied. the failure mileage was 72,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. while driving 35 mph, the contact smelled a burning odor from the air conditioning vents, and the vehicle stalled and could not be restarted. there were no warning indicators illuminated before the failure. the vehicle was towed to the dealer (bmw of tulsa, 9702 s memorial dr, tulsa, ok 74133), but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the manufacturer was willing to pay half for a replacement engine. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and confirmed with the contact that they would pay half of the cost for a replacement engine. the manufacturer opened a case. the failure mileage was 69,000.

This vehicle has numerous complaints about the vanos system. as i was driving on the highway with full traffic, my engine failed at 70 mph causing to me almost get killed in traffic as i fought my way the the shoulder. the car would not start, i took the car to the dealer and it seems that the vanos bolt backed out of the camshaft and caused catastrophic damage to the engine. i went to my warranty and they would not cover the damage due to it being the bolt that backed out. as they do not cover bolts. now i am paying for a car that i cant drive and is currently sitting at bmw of mt. laurel in new jersey with an 18k bill. this can happen to alot of people in these vehicles. that vanos unit is dangerous and should be recalled again with the correct bolts reinforced.

Replacing the leaking turbo oil drain block and faulty valve seals which causes oil to drain and the vehicle to smoke and burn so you have to add at least 1/2 quart of oil within 2 weeks time while driving and check engine light comes on

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. while operating the vehicle, the temperature gauge indicated that the engine had overheated. upon inspection, it was discovered that hot water had leaked from the engine area. the vehicle was towed to the local dealer (united bmw, 11458 alpharetta hwy, roswell ga) where it was diagnosed that the water pump and thermostat had failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but while leaving the dealer, the vehicle began to violently shake and rattle. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the drive shaft and transfer case failed. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 86,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. the contact heard an abnormal noise and noticed smoke coming through the vents inside the vehicle. the contact also smelled a strong burning odor. the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v336000 (engine and engine cooling), but the contact was not notified. while driving, the idler pulley bolt fractured. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 18v248000 (engine and engine cooling) and 17v683000 (engine and engine cooling). the vehicle was unable to be driven due to the failures. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. upon starting the vehicle and while driving, the low coolant level warning indicator illuminated. the contact added coolant to the vehicle, but the warning indicator remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to santa monica bmw (1127 santa monica blvd, santa monica, ca 90401 (310) 829-3535) where it was diagnosed that the oil filter housing gasket needed replacement and the coolant was contaminated due to fractured coolant and oil lines. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made of the failure and stated that the warranty was expired. no further assistance could be offered. the contact spoke with the manufacturer and the dealer and a reduced repair price was agreed upon. the contact also spoke with several unknown bmw dealers who informed him that many other vehicle owners had the same failure and it was a design flaw in the vehicle. the failure mileage was approximately 45,500.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. on several occasions, while driving and idling, the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the engine. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine belt tensioner needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 65,000.

When driving down the road, i heard a loud fan noise coming from the engine. i did a quick systems check to see if all systems were ok- they were. about 1/10 of a mile later, my car indicated that it was overheating and that i had reduced power. i couldn't drive over 35 miles per hour. within the next 45 seconds, as i'm getting onto an interstate, my engine shuts off completely and i lose all power. i never had any warning and there is no way to tell engine temperature on this car. after having my vehicle towed and diagnosed by a certified dealer, i was told that the thermostat, water pump and expansion tank all needed to be replaced. i was informed that one of these items failed and caused the other two to break with extended use. this cost me $1990. there was no way i could have prevented this from happening. i've always had my car serviced at the recommended intervals.

Vanos bolts, engine and engine cooling, engine stall, coolant fuel pump

My 2011 bmw x5 3.0 sav was exhibiting rough starts on ignition and it stalled after a while and wouldn't start back up again. we had it towed to the dealership the first time and the vanos system was replaced( recall extended warranty). the next time it stalled and wouldn't start back up we were advised it was the starter so we had that replaced( $1163.36) along with the battery( $ 260) and then the driver side window wouldn't go down and the dash board lighting went out and the alarm wouldn't engage, the dealer advised us that it was a footwell module problem covered under extended warranty until 125,000 miles. all in all the car is rigged with problems. i have decided to look up all the nhtsa recalls and have them done before anything else breaksdown. nhtsa has the vehicle down for both front driver and passenger air bags and also the in-tank fuel pump in addition to all the ones i mentioned above.

I purchased car 2011-sole owner dealer state replaces engine pulley bolt 2012? driving in dark and rain in mountains nc 1/24/17. all of a sudden lost ability to steer without a lot of force. then got dash errors "charging malfunction", "engine overheating" transmission failure "no abs" "drive cautiously ""turn off engine". i could not turn steering wheel hard enough to get off road. pulled barely to side and turned engine off. completely stranded and scared to death. same broken bolt to be replaced. this is lethal situation and i am stuck with a killer car. cannot afford to dump it. this car has required towing several times for engine failure that was "repaired". but i don't know what was done. in prior separate incident i was driving along engine light came on car sputtered and stopped-required towing. and takata recall also still waiting for airbags shoot shards. bmw will not replace. they think it is not hot in nc. i call 104 degrees hot.

January 13, 2017, i was driving my 2011 bmw x5, with approximately 77,000 miles, on a two-lane road and i accelerated to pass a truck. while going approximately 45 mph my x5 unexpectedly and without any warning shifted into neutral. the engine would only rev when i pushed on the accelerator pedal. this was without any check engine light or noise indicating catastrophic mechanical failure. thankfully, i had enough speed to complete my pass before the oncoming traffic reached me and we avoided a potentially disastrous collision. i coasted to the shoulder of the road hoping to be able to shift back into drive. movement of the shifter did nothing and the engine continued to run at idle speed. when i tried to restart the x5, nothing would happen. all the lights on the dashboard were still working and there were no signs of any warning indicators. the towne bmw service representative told me that i would need a new engine at an estimated cost of $20,000. the vehicle had an estimated trade-in value $14,000! this outcome is after i properly maintained the vehicle for 6 years, having all oil changes done within the manufactures suggested service intervals. and spent over $6,000 with the service department. most recent oil change was done at on november 15, 2016. i even had the oil filter housing gaskets replaced at a cost of $572 based on the technician's recommendation. it is unfathomable to me and other pro mechanics to understand what would have caused such a catastrophic failure. dealer called feb. 9, 2017, almost one month after my trouble began, to explain that the #6 cam shaft bearing failed and seized onto the connecting rod. i asked what would cause such a failure and they said it was probably due to lack of oil or dirt in the oil. neither could explain how this could happen with routine oil changes and most recent being only two months prior.

The vehicle cut power output from the engine and when restarted would shut off. the dealership declared that the car had incurred water intrusion into the engine compartment without being flooded or submerged in water causing total engine damage that is the equivalent of salvage. the diagnosis as a result of this water intrusion effects diagnosis and recommended fix : diagnostic - check engine light: vtc eccentric shaft, valvetronic servomotor, oil spray nozzle, 6 injectors, and all associated gaskets and hardware. technician note: diagnosed check engine light, caused by valvetronic servomotor faults, found needing replacement of vtc eccentric shaft, valvetronic servomotor, oil spray nozzle, and 6 injectors. labor time includes time for programming and diag. (note: one time faults for fuel pressure plausibility, may be consequential of valvetronic malfunction or secondary issue.) [other]: cylinder head, with replacement gasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, 3 center bolts, and all associated hardware. with new partition, valvetronic servomotor, six injectors, and all hardware for engine removal. technician note: during injector inspection found injectors 5-6 couplers corroded into head. new injectors will not seat properly and replacement head is required. note: new head comes with eccentric shaft and rollers. this inflicts financial damage to the consumers since the cost of remedying this is more than the value of the car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. the contact stated that the engine failed and smoke emitted under the hood while driving. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for inspection where it was diagnosed that the fuel diesel heather failed, causing the vehicle to overheat. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v339000 (fuel system, diesel). the failure mileage was 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. while driving 60 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate and lost power. the engine temperature warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine service and the technician stated that there was a failure with the engine fan. the vehicle was diagnosed and produced diagnostic code 3792. the contact was unsure about what parts needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 11v521000 (engine and engine cooling), but the vin was not included. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 62,000. updated 01/04/17*lj updated 7/5/18*jb *tr

Engine cooling system coolant pump speed outside the tolerance recall (code: 3792) my car was over heating, so i turned off the engine on the highway 202. after that i let me car cool down, but when i tried to start it again, the engine still overheated.

On 21 oct 16 at approximately 3:10 pm, while driving on route 30 in hampstead, md and approaching a roundabout at 30 miles per hour, the vehicle stalled without any warning lights on the dashboard. lights were operable, but the vehicle would not restart or disengage out of park to move the vehicle from oncoming traffic. the vehicle was towed to the bmw dealership. if this had happened just 30 minutes before, we would have been on an interstate 795 traveling at 60 mph. there was not collision. at the bmw dealership, the service department stated it was the starter. the starter was replaced but the vehicle still would not start. the service manager stated that the 'engine has seized up' and the cost would be $17,000 to take out the engine and replace the engine. the vehicle was less than two months out of an extended warranty. we are contacting bmw as the vehicle was traded because of the prohibited cost of repairs. the symptoms displayed match the part 573 safety recall report 16v-746. *tr

On sunday 08/16/2016, my 2011 bmw x5 lost steering power, and i got a bunch of errors on the dashboard including engine not charging. when i looked under the hood, i was able to see that the engine belt is off its track, and idle pulley has broken off. this is the same failure for which bmw created a recall: (recall number -nhtsa campaign id-: 12v5500, recall date: 11/27/2012, component: steering: hydraulic powers assist system). on monday 08/15/2016, i called bmw of north america llc and informed of the failure and requested that they pay assistance since the issue was a known design flaw under the recall above. repairs were made to this car (bmw of rockville, 12/21/2012), but failure appears to continue to repeat. bmw instructed me to tow the car to the bmw dealer and once an estimate from the dealer was given they will make a decision. the estimate was available monday, and when i called them back tuesday morning, they informed me that a decision will be made within 24-48 hours. i called every day after the period for three days, but was never transferred to the case manager (sam), instead, i was asked to supply my information over and over. on monday 08/22, i called and requested to talk to a supervisor. the supervisor sounded irritated by my call, and proceeded to tell me that a decision will be made within 5 business days. two days later, sam called me and informed me that he got the paperwork, and will be working on my case. on tuesday 08/30, i called bmw back since i haven't heard back from them, i requested to talk to sam, but the phone assistant informed me that he is not available, but based on the notes available to her, i am being denied because of the high mileage on the car (62k miles). after two weeks of stringing me along, bmw didn't even bother to call me with the bad news. this is a design flaw that bmw should own and pay for

As i was driving a check battery light came on, i drove for approx 2 more mins as i tried to park an engine malfunction light came on. then the steering wheel froze and i could not change gears. i blocked city street traffic for over 2 hrs before a tow truck could get me. at the time of the malfunction i was driving 15-20 mph. thankfully, i was not on a freeway or this would have been a major accident. i was told by bmw that the drive belt fell apart, (while i was driving) it went into the engine and destroyed the timing chain and cam system. the engine is damaged beyond repair. i feel this is a design flaw that the drive belt would destroy the engine in a matter of 2 mins and/or it is defective drive belt. the car has approx 42k miles. bmw offered for me to pay $2800 for them to take the engine apart and investigate the engine malfunction. this car has had numerous problems since i purchased it. attached are my service records.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. while driving approximately 7 mph, a loud noise was heard from the engine compartment and the steering wheel lost power without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed and replaced the belt bolt. the failure recurred after six months. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to a dealer. the dealer stated that a recall repair was already perfomed and could not be repeated. the vehicle was not repaired. the recall details were not provided. the failure mileage was approximately 56,000.

Driving my wife and kids on a busy city street traveling 30 mph. suddenly without warning engine overheat needs to cool down warning appeared. i turned on the hazard lights. vehicle began to slow down and we were almost hit twice. was able to pull over and proceeded down a side street. engine overheat shut down engine warning which appeared in red came up so i stopped the vehicle and turned off the engine for an hour. my family sat for an hour hoping the engine would cool off but to no avail. we were left stranded @ 1:30am in baltimore city which is known for senseless random acts of violence.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 bmw x5. while driving at an unknown speed, the engine overheated warning message illuminated and the vehicle failed to accelerate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the water pump was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000.
