Audi Q3 Typical Problems - TFSI Engine Issues

Audi Q3 Typical Problems - TFSI Engine Issues

The Audi Q3 (8U) is a compact SUV produced between 2011 and 2018. It underwent a facelift at the end of 2014. Its successor is the Q3 F3.

Typical Issues with the TFSI & TDI Engines

The 1.4 TFSI (EA211 series) and 2.0 TFSI (EA888) offer two gasoline engine options. The former uses a timing belt that, according to Audi, requires replacement every 130,000 miles (210,000 kilometers) – the latter has a timing chain. Serious issues with either engine are not expected and are usually due to insufficient maintenance and frequent short-distance driving.

Those considering a diesel should ensure that the necessary software updates have been carried out in the wake of the emissions scandal. All 2.0 TDI engines with the EA189 motor, produced until November 2011, were affected.

The successor engine, EA288, is suspected of being equipped with an illegal defeat device. The extent to which Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) will be held responsible for this, if at all, remains unresolved at this time. Otherwise, the 2.0 TDI only suffers from the usual weak points (turbocharger, injectors). The 140 hp (CFFB code) variant had occasional cases of defective clutch pressure plates.

S-Tronic or Tiptronic?

The S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission is not without its weaknesses: heavy city traffic and towing can lead to premature clutch failure. Some owners also report jerky shifting. During a test drive, ensure that the transmission shifts gears smoothly and the clutch does not jerk or shudder when starting.

Those preferring gasoline engines might opt for the Tiptronic torque converter automatic, available with the 200 hp 2.0 TFSI. Though slightly less fuel-efficient, it's better suited for the aforementioned conditions.

Other Audi Q3 Problems And Weak Points

Problems with the Quattro all-wheel drive typically arise from overdue Haldex oil changes, often signaled by the front wheels spinning. Older models often have broken suspension springs and rusty brake discs, according to TÜV reports. The ADAC breakdown statistics generally show the Audi Q3 in a positive light.

The MMI infotainment system display occasionally freezes, and there are occasional failures of the heated exterior mirrors. Wind noise becomes noticeable at around 62 mph (100 km/h), and the rear seats offer limited legroom for taller passengers.

Models from 2014 to 2018 had issues with the turn signals. Another recall affects models produced from June 2014 to November 2016: due to a software error, the brake lights might not activate during emergency braking.

Our Recommendation: 2.0 TFSI with Tiptronic Transmission

The Audi Q3 I, particularly the gasoline models, gives little cause for concern. Prices start at around 10,000 euros in the common used car markets
