Audi A5 Typical Problems: TDI Engine Weak Points

The Audi A5 F5 (B9) is a midsize sedan manufactured since 2016, succeeding the Audi A5 8T (B8). In addition to the coupe, there is once again a convertible and the "four-door" coupe A5 Sportback. In 2019, a facelift was introduced, featuring a new MMI control concept and mild hybrid technology.

In 2018, Audi revised the nomenclature for the A5 lineup. Instead of using displacement, a two-digit number now indicates the approximate power range. Consequently, the "2.0 TFSI" became "35 TFSI" or "45 TFSI," with the designation generally based on the horsepower rating.

Audi A5 Robust Gasoline Engines

The familiar four-cylinder gasoline engine, EA888, from the previous generation is still used in the current A5 generation. If you are considering setting up a continuous oil change regimen based on your previous A5 experience, you can breathe a sigh of relief. High oil consumption is now a rare issue, and it primarily concerns isolated cases rather than a larger problem with the series.

Instances of stretched timing chains are also infrequent, typically arising from neglected maintenance coupled with inappropriate driving habits. The V6 engines in the EA839 series found in the S5 and RS5 are also known for their durability.

Currently, all models across the lineup exclusively feature direct fuel injection engines. For those contemplating long-term ownership, especially with high mileage, anticipate potential issues like clogged injectors and carbon deposits in the intake tract, which typically result in decreased performance and increased fuel consumption.

Audi A5 Diesel Engines

Reliable 2.0 TDI

The 2.0 TDI remains the staple engine for Audi, and there have been no major weaknesses or large-scale recalls. Despite concerns regarding the Dieselgate scandal and Audi's reputation, reliability has not been a significant concern for customers.

This also applies to the successor engine, EA288, in the new A5, although it has been suspected of having an illegal emissions cheating device. The extent to which the VW Group (VAG) is held accountable for this remains uncertain. To be on the safe side, opt for a newer model compliant with Euro 6d-TEMP or higher emissions standards if you're concerned.

Additionally, for high-mileage vehicles, typical diesel-related issues such as injectors, turbochargers, DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), and dual-mass flywheels may eventually require replacement.

Issues with the 3.0 TDI

The 3.0 TDI is available in both 218 PS and 272 PS variants. In the A4 B9 and A6 C7, the three-liter engine from the EA897 series had problems with camshafts. However, according to technical product information 2043172/19, the A5 F5 seems to have been spared from this issue. Nevertheless, some owners have reported typical ticking or clattering noises from the camshaft drive in older 272 PS models compliant with Euro 6 and bearing the engine code CRTC, so it's advisable to pay close attention to them.

Furthermore, a few 3.0 TDI engines required oil pump replacement due to a defect, which is indicated by various noises such as rattling, knocking, or banging, as per technical product information 2053095/8. This problem also appears to be limited to older model years.

Electronics and Infotainment Problems

Electronic issues are commonplace with the A5 F5, but they are often resolved with software updates:

• Problems with the starter battery, leading to poor cold starts and a "Low Voltage in Electrical System" warning in the instrument cluster, have been reported. Audi is aware of the problem but does not proactively address it, so owners must take initiative. As part of a service measure, old starter batteries (often Varta brand) are replaced with new ones.
• Initially, there were some problems with the Active Lane Assist, but these have been resolved with appropriate software updates.
• The Google Earth view in the navigation system is known for its vulnerability to errors, but these issues have been rectified with MMI firmware update 1329.
• Some vehicles experience a malfunction in the emergency call function. The issue has been known since late 2020 but is only being consistently pursued since the beginning of this year. A software update is expected to resolve the problem, and there have been reports of the emergency call control unit being replaced.
• Older models may have experienced the deletion of saved radio stations from favorites. Once again, a firmware update provides a solution.
• Problems were initially reported with the 360-degree camera in models produced until around the end of 2017. A service action (technical product information: 2049056/5) addressed this weakness.
• Inadequate Bluetooth connectivity has been a recurring issue across all model years.

Other Audi A5 Typical Problems

• Occasionally, the headlight range adjustment (error code: P00496) fails in the A5 F5. This problem has been known for several years but has not been fully resolved.
• Some owners have reported an audible cracking noise in the steering system from time to time.
• Isolated instances of rust on the exhaust system have been observed in models produced until around the end of 2017. From the spring of 2018 onward, stainless steel exhaust systems were installed, whereas earlier versions were chromed.

Regarding the S-Tronic transmission, it is much less susceptible to issues than its predecessor. To ensure continued reliability, it is advisable to perform a transmission fluid change or flush every 50,000 to 60,000 miles.

Audi A5 Recalls

The Audi A5 F5 has been subject to several recalls. The following are all the recall actions affecting a significant number of vehicles:

• The aluminum decorative strips with Bang & Olufsen branding in the door panel area may detach, causing protrusions that can lead to passenger injuries due to sharp edges. Affected are A5 Sportback models manufactured from October 2014 to October 2017.
• Models up to the 2018 model year may experience fuel leakage due to leaks in the fuel distributor.
• A defective locking bolt can lead to the loss of the attached trailer. Affected are model years up to 2018. During the workshop visit, the trailer hitch will be inspected and possibly replaced.
• According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), some models with factory-installed tires do not meet UN-ECE R30 requirements. Affected are 2017 and 2018 models with Dunlop brand "Sport Maxx RT Noise Shield 265/30 ZR 20" tires. During the workshop visit, the tires will be checked and potentially replaced.
• Moisture ingress into the belt starter generator may result in overheating. Affected are A5 models manufactured from 2016 through 2020.
• Due to potential stress corrosion cracking, increased play between the control arm and wheel carrier may occur, impacting vehicle handling. Additionally, affected vehicles from the 2019 to 2021 model years have not undergone wheel alignment, which can lead to excessive rear tire wear.

For detailed information on recalls, you can consult the KBA (Federal Motor Transport Authority) or ADAC. Using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), you can determine if your specific model is affected by recalls and check which actions have been completed.

Audi A5 Buyer's Guide

Our Recommendation: 2.0 TFSI / 45 TFSI

The Audi A5 is a good choice in both gasoline and diesel variants. However, due to numerous teething issues, it is advisable to opt for a newer model, preferably one that has already had all recall actions completed. Prices for a used Audi A5 F5 typically start at around 22,000 dollars in popular used car markets.
